I'm new to town and this was a great first experience for a restaurant in the twin cities. It was a dinner to celebrate my eleventh anniversary and everything went better than expected. The atmosphere was great, the crowd was great the food was good and I can't wait to come back. The host at the front door and waitress we had were very nice, and helpful. It may have been the time of our arrival, but the vibe I got was more of a slower pace and purposefully set for you to enjoy your time. Not really important but my wife noted that although you have complete visual access to the kitchen, she didn't hear a sound as they prepared the meals and I would say that is fairly impressive.

Made a reservation at the last minute, for a BDay Lunch on a Friday with no problem. The table location was great, a nice booth, plus there was a fire in the fire place. The wood fire pizza is always great and the beet and goat cheese salad is the best in St. Paul. We were a bit of an unruly bunch ordering off the menu and making special requests, but our waiter took it all in stride. Our waiter even surprised us with birthday dessert!

We had a late lunch (2-ish) and chose this place because of the Woodfire Grill :) We found great parking in their lot, sat right next to the cozy fireplace, had constant attention of the staff, and delicious food. We can't wait to come back! Neat neighborhood, too.

We brought a group of 11 for an early Sunday dinner (5:30pm). A few of us arrived early and had cocktails at the bar, great service and unexpected happy hour with $3.00 Martinis. Our table was set up and waiting for us, the server was efficient and friendly and the food was excellent. We ordered a variety of menu items from veggie burgers and salads to a tenderloin steak and everything in between. The highest marks went to the Lamb Shank special of the day and the Nesseff Salad. Both were outstanding. Everyone else was pleased with their meals as well. Our out of town guests and others in the group who were there for the first time were highly pleased and we shall all return.

We had an early dinner reservation as we had an event not far from the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. We were seated promptly, and the service was attentive but not intrusive. We enjoyed the faint scent of the wood fired grill. The Chef had created an Ahi Tuna special that was spectacular, and although not on the menu, a baked potato was made available to accompany my wife's perfect steak. For dessert we enjoyed an ice cream drink made with real ice cream!

Love the Downtowner for it's atmosphere but go for the food. The filet was melt-in-your mouth tender, the pork loin delicious, and the alfredo which they added tomatoes at my husband's request. I got my filet with the mashed potatoes and a demi-glaze sauce that was to die for.

No one in our party of six had any complaints about the food or service. The wait staff provided tasting samples of the Surly and Summit local brews for my out of town colleagues. My colleagues from the Netherlands and Germany preferred the Summit EPA. For appetizers, both the hummus and baked goat cheese were excellent. My colleague from the Netherlands enjoyed the Bone-in Cowboy Rib Eye. I had a slight complaint as I ordered the twin pork chops done "medium" and they were somewhat overcooked, tough and smallish. Next time I'll order them medium rare. Other than that all was good.

I have recommended this restaurant to others in the past. But last evening the food was not spot on as it has been in the past. I ordered the appetizer with the vegetables and seafood and fried, while it was OK it wasn't stellar and wouldn't order it again. The special with halibut and "potato salad" was different. The halibut and sauce with a sweet and savory mix was actually fine and the halibut was prepared well. However, the cold potato salad in a very different version with some type of spice that just didn't impress me at all. The waitress was kind enough to offer an alternate after I said I didn't like it, but I didn't accept the offer of another potato. I hope this was just an off night.

We went here for my son's birthday and the host was friendly with his greeting wishing him a happy birthday upon confirming our reservation. The food was very good but not excellent. My husband had the lamb and it was not cooked to his request so they happily made him a fresh plate and removed the price from our bill because he was not able to eat with the rest of us at the table; which we thought was outstanding customer service. The second plate was great. The rice and garlic mash potatoes were very good. The wood fire chicken had great seasoning and the fire roasted kabobs were also very tasty. Our wait staff was attentive and pleasant. It would have been a bonus if they had outdoor seating as the evening weather was beautiful.

We went to the downtowner expecting a nice dinner out with good wood fired food. It was terrible. To begin, the server looked and acted as though she would rather be giving childbirth than serving us. There was no wood fire to be seen. The mushroom appetizer we ordered tasted like it had been made 2 weeks prior, frozen, and then microwaved. The "loaded" baked potato was clearly microwaved based on the molten block of cheese that was on top. Finally the steak was boiling hot through and tasted like it had been microwaved as well. Based on the state of the food and the fact that there was no wood fire to be seen, I would be suprised if everything at this restaurant wasnt microwaved. I would never go there again or recommended it to anyone.

Wanted a relaxing place with a reserved table for pre-concert dining and this is it. The woodfire scent makes you happy when you walk in the door, the menu is varied and well executed, the drinks are well made, and the service is friendly and professional. Our foursome had the lamb shank, the salmon, the swordfish, and some kind of steak - don't remember - and everyone loved their meal. Not too loud for conversation, which is the point of dinner companions, ya? A great start to a fun evening, with quality that matched the artistry of Santana and Rod Stewart.

Food was well prepared. Service lacked. We had to constantly look for our waiter to get refills of water, etc. It took two attempts to get our drink orders. The food "runner" was not helpful always refusing to assist us in getting the missing items from our order and referring all to our hard to find waiter. We were one of 6 groups so the place was not busy. Would not go back due to service issues.

The overall ambience was very pleasing, mixed with the smell of a wood fire grill, I felt comfortable from the begining. My family took my partner and I out for our birthdays. My brother joined ( having special needs) and the server kept him content and laughing throughout the meal. We ordered the MY strip, salmon, pork chops and burgers. All of which were good, but we're lacking any sort of presentation. This is a great place, however, if you are looking for somehibg elegant but simple that is agreeable for everyone in the family.
