Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful restaurant and food. Expensive but worth it. My son goes to university of Virginia and when we come visit from New York this is one of our Favorite restaurants to come to. Go Hoo's!"

  • "Steaks, appetizers, sides, and desserts were excellent; crab cakes were good (but I'm particular since I'm from Maryland, and I prefer them to be cooked a bit more). Service was excellent throughout, and staff was very accommodating and allowed us to modify our arrival time at the last minute. They even gave us a great table in the window when asked. A high-end restaurant without being too foofy. All in all, a very nice night out with good friends."

  • "We had arrived early and ordered drinks outside before the rest of our party arrived. Our waiter was very attentive and courteous, which contributed significantly to the satisfaction of our dining experience. The food was good and we all enjoyed the meal very much!"

  • "We arrived at 6:30 pm on a quiet Sunday evening so there was no excuse for our food to come out of the kitchen cold, and the server who brought it out should have noted it was cold and never served it! Also, the rib eye was well-done, not charred medium rare and the replacement was brought out center red cold rare. The meat was fatty and gristly and no rib eyes are not always like that as they are my steak of choice. The broccolini had no seasoning at all. The mashed potatoes were delicious and more so the second time when they arrived hot. The bread pudding was bland. We are long time loyal customers of the Downtown Grill but it seems that with all of the new fixtures and furnishings the quality of the food has absorbed the expense."

  • "The Downtown Grille is our favorite spot for special occasions. We always bring our guests here when they visit."

  • "The staff (Noah in particular) was outstanding. Service was awesome, food was tasty and well seasoned, and the expectations were not met, they were exceeded. It was my first time dining here and I will forego some of my other favorite restaurants in this area and eat here again. I made my reservations online with my guests, another huge positive."

  • "Excellent service and food. Nice atmosphere and ambiance. We have dined here before and it is always a great experience."

  • "My husband told me I make a better, thicker rib eye even though this restaurant is known for its steaks. I had the rockfish and it was excellent. Our guests enjoyed their tuna and filet. Overall, the restaurant is VERY expensive and all the ala carte items really drive up the bill. My rockfish entree and the tuna entree had side vegetables (we did NOT ask for them) and I was charged $6.00 for a small amount of brussel sprouts and the tuna entree had some lettuce/greens for $6.00. That was a real ripoff."

  • "We had 7:00 pm reservations on a Friday evening. We were promptly taken to our table but waited at least 10 minutes before our server came and asked for our drink order. While our appetizers arrived in a reasonable amount of time, we were still waiting for our entrees an hour after we were seated. The restaurant was not crowded. Our fish dinners were good, but not excellent or worthy of the price."

  • "We were expecting the same fine service we had had in years past but found this was not the case. We had a nice meal but it was not exceptional and the service was horrible. Terribly disappointing... We did have a nice experience in the bar before we were seated for dinner thanks to the friendly barkeep."

  • "We had been concerned, having read a little about the new menu, that it would be a little too trendy or "fou-fou" for us. Not the case! They have kept the core of their excellent previous offerings while adding some interesting options. The new decor is also appealing. Congratulations to whoever thought this through."

  • "I have eaten at this restaurant in the past and overall it is not the same, food, selection or service. My last experience would led me to think it has a different owner."

  • "A recent remodel has thrown a little more light on the subject -- way less stuffy, and very pleasant. Service was outstanding: Both waiter and chef happily accommodated our limited food plans, identifying which sauces, meals contained sugar, gluten, etc. And our very pleasant and efficient waiter also kept track of our time so we wouldn't miss a theatre start time. The host inquired as to our satisfaction, and we replied enthusiastically. And the food? The crab cakes are to die for, and the hanger steak was loaded with flavor."

  • "Our food was wonderful. The French Onion soup was the best I've ever had, our steaks were cooked to perfection. And to top it off, the Banana's Foster was divine."

  • "So we chose the Downtown Grille as the venue to help celebrate our 28th Wedding Anniversary. We made reservations for 6:00 and arrived promptly. We were seated immediately. Service was very fast and food was delicious. The evening was enjoyable!"

  • "We dined here for my husband's birthday on a recent trip to Charlottesville. The restaurant was clean, energetic, and classy. The food was incredible although a bit pricey … watch out - sides are extra. It was an incredible meal with an extensive wine list. Our waiter, Noah, knew the menu well and allowed us to dine at our pace where other waiters appeared to be rushing their customers along. Our appetizer, tuna tartar, was quite nice and a large enough portion that we only needed one appetizer. Steaks were cooked exactly how we ordered them and the side dishes were definitely enough to share. I highly suggest the spinach and truffle fries! The wine list had wines for $35 all the way up to $800; so anyone would be able to enjoy a bottle."

  • "Although the Downtown Grille is far from being the best restaurant in Charlottesville it is not bad--probably not worth the prices, but not bad. The entrees were good, and the two generous side dishes of vegetables we ordered were excellent. I think their sauteed spinach is the best I ever had. Service was attentive and professional. Noise level was quite high, even on a Thursday. Some of the tables (including ours, unfortunately) were way too close together, making it difficult for wait staff to get between them. It's very basic food, steaks and vegetables with some fish. Not interesting, but really very good if that's what you want and if you're willing to pay top dollar for it."

  • "And the renovation is nice. Lights are up too bright, however."

  • "Always enjoy this restaurant on a special occasion such as a birthday. Love the new décor. The lighting exquisite and overall restaurant much brighter. Do NOT like the size of the new menu. Its just too huge...you don't know what to do with it once you have made your dining choices and even too big to hold in front of you to view. The old menus inside the nice leather binding were much classier and certainly a manageable size. Also, do not like the new mashed potatoes. They are no different than mashed potatoes I make for Thanksgiving dinner. The previous creamny ones with the red skins in them were so much better."

  • "It was a Saturday nite and quite crowded. But they should plan better for that. We had a long wait to order. Had to ask if we'd been assigned a waitress. Meal took very long to arrive. They switched two of our steaks and mine was overdone. We traded after having eaten about half. Hadn't realized they'd switched. They comped us a free steak for their mistake. Meals overall were very good."

  • "Went here with friends so our table sat 4 people. We were seated quickly and our waiter was prompt and throughout the night was very attentive to our needs and in fact became fun dealing with him as we were picking on one another and he played right along. The food was very good from the shrimp cocktail to my filet mignon, all cooked the way I asked for it and the other 3 people with me at the table all enjoyed their meals as well. The restaurant is a bit pricy, however, I am sure most people know that going in. My wife and our two guests had a wonderful evening and I would highly recommended this restaurant to anyone."

  • "The Downtown Grille has an excellent menu, fine atmosphere (quiet and comfortable), with excellent service. The recently completed renovation is notable adding fine appointments to an already excellent restaurant. It is an elite dining experience in Charlottesville."

  • "Our go-to place in Charlottesville when we want to celebrate. Top-notch service, noise level allows for conversation, perfect steaks, oysters & seafood. Not cheap, but always delivers and worth it. Nothing gimmicky about this place -- a classic steakhouse menu. Similar to Fleming's, Ruth's Chris and other chains in bigger cities, but with the warmth and charm of the downtown mall location."

  • "Food can be good but when you have plastic in your salad...wasn't happy about that. Service was very poor. Maybe 20 minutes to have anyone even come over and ask us for a drink order. Was going to have a big party there, chose another restaurant."

  • "We're vegetarians, and the menu options for us are therefore quite limited. However, the service was good (we were 45 min. late for our reservation but were seated promptly anyway)."

  • "We have never been disappointed nor have our guest who have come form UK, France and, dare I say....Georgia [not the country] They have a way of surprising red meat eaters with new flavors otherwise untested and equally unsurpassed. A carnivores delight!"

  • "My early-20s son said the place had great atmo, great food and great service. I figured it would be good, but the service was outstanding, the food extremely good, and the atmosphere charming. A Charlottesville gem!"

  • "The food at this restaurant really is very good. But the prices are just crazy. They don't look bad at first glance... crab cakes for $28? Not bad, right? But that is literally all you get for $28. No salad. No sides. So then you have to pay extra for each side dish that you want. Your bill just starts to skyrocket after that. We did really enjoy ourselves, and enjoyed a delicious meal, but we were thankful we were using a gift card rather than our own cash."

  • "A great find inCharlottesville Excellent food ,good atmosphere and service. It is dining at its best. We will make it a favorite on our restaurant list."

  • "Besides the good food and great wine list, the atmosphere was enticing. Even though the place was quite full we could carry on a conversation-great acoustics!"

  • "Downtown Grille has the feel of a steakhouse that's been around a long time. (I don't know if it has; it's just the timeless feel about it.) It's very professional, conservatively decorated, and well-staffed. The steak is quite good and at a very fair price. I had grilled tuna, which was also very good. Our waiter went out of his way to be sure I had extra salad, and the broccolini was perfect. The wine list is good, and not too overpriced, with options in the $30s and $40s. I have the sense this is a consistent and reliable place for dinner or lunch, conveniently located on the Main St. pedestrian maill. Dependable, and that's worth a lot."

  • "Great table & great service, thank you Tito. Skip the Mac & Cheese side dish - flavorless.... The Rack of Lamb was perfectly prepared - flavor & temperature as requested. The steak Au Poivre (strip sirloin) - good size portion, perfectly cooked - but the quality of the beef -->> well let's just say it was an old cow.... Too bad because the Grille is known for it's beef dishes.... Will have to try again & choose a different cut of meat, maybe it will be a local beef. The overall the experience, although a bit pricey, was very nice."

  • "Downtown Grille is a great experience all around. The atmosphere is definitely upscale, but you feel perfectly comfortable to laugh and have fun as well. The price tag is high, but worth every penny. Every time I have gone I have been beyond pleased with every item of food I have ordered- without a doubt best steak in Charlottesville or for that matter that I have ever had anywhere. Multiple servers that I have had have also been extremely nice and knowledgable. They give very good recommendations for your tastes and are a pleasure to chat with."
