Everything I ate here was top notch, but I did notice two others in my group, who I would characterize as somewhat picky eaters, had difficulty finding something they felt they would like on the fairly limited menu. Indeed their op choice, the land, rainout that night, so almost feared they wanted to find another place to eat. Too bad the restaurant does not have a few specials to supplement their selection.

We first met John when he was the chef at Penelopes in the 70s...before he had his own restaurant. Downey's is great for people who are serious cooks love food and sharing tastes! Liz is the greatest hostess ever and her chef husband still "has it"! We had a wild table for eight and everything was superb! Beautiful wines...! Jan Dunbar

This chef is artful--unusual flavors and just plain delicious food. Gracious and friendly service. The ambiance is lovely and, while lively, always somehow peaceful and private. We went for a special celebration and the night was everything we had hoped for.

Beautiful setting, wonderfully prepared food, and excellent service---all the best. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed one of the best dining experiences in Santa Barbara. Wine, apps, all the way through dessert. Both her halibut dish and my Mt. Cook salmon dish were incredible. I have to reiterate that the Mt. Cook salmon was the very best salmon dish I've ever had---and I've eaten A LOT of salmon! The servers are extremely knowledgeable and helpful as well. They work superbly as a team (instead of you being assigned one server) and collectively provide just the right balance of attention to take care every need, but leave well enough alone for a quiet romantic dinner. The fresh strawberry dessert was awesome. Pricey, but WORTH IT!
