While we did enjoy the meal very much, the atmosphere was missing something - and for that price it should be missing nothing! Might go again, if someone else is paying. The service was probably the best on the UWS.

Food falls well short of its aspirations. I regularly go out for a $400 to $500 dinner on Saturday night, and the service at Dovetail was the worst I've experienced any upscale restaurant. My wife and I were placed in a distant corner (though the restaurant was empty when we got there) and we felt as though we were an afterthought to the waitstaff the entire time we were there. We couldn't wait to leave.

My sister arrived tired and wet from Maryland and it took us almost an hour to get a cab to the reaturant. She was not happy. Five minutes after we got to the resturant her whole mood change. From the greeting at the door to the time we left everything was WONDERFUL!

Service almost over-solicitous. Still my husband's dish had to go back twice to get it "medium" as requested. Waiter removed it from our bill without our saying a word. When one goes to Dovetail, one must be prepared for a limited menu with no substitutions. Prices are on the high end but not outrageous. Portions are moderate. Preparation was excellent - interesting and tasty. But if one is not a "foody," one may not be thrilled. I enjoyed it thoroughly. On a beautiful night, it was a lovely stroll to Lincoln Center. Many of the other early diners were also heading there.

This was my second time at Dovetail. The first time I enjoyed the fall menu and this time the menu was chnged to the dpring menu. The first time I enjoyed everything. This time my scallop appetizer with bamama curyy was wonderful. I was not as impressed with my tile fish entree. The flavors were good, but the fish was dry on the edges and a little tough. The bread pudding was an absolute delight.

I took my husband for his birthday. I couldn't get a reservation earlier than 10:45, but when we arrived early (10:15), they sat us promptly. The house cocktails are hadn-crafted and exquisite. Try the Strawberry Lemonade for a sot-too-sugary treat! Service was detailed, but not intrusive, and the food was delicious. I appreciate that the portions are very reasonable. I didn't leave hungry, but I also didn't leave feeling that I overate. A truly wonderful experience. We will definitely return for special occasions in our future. S. DeVries

Menu was interesting and a bit pricey. The service was excellent and the restaurant is tastefully decorated but the tables are very close together and the overall feeling is very noisy. Difficult for first timers to find as the sign on the door is very small and the address is on the apartment building next door.

The food is good, although misses the mark in places. Beet ravioli and beef cheek "lasagna" were highlights. Most other dishes were not seasoned properly or did not otherwise stand out. The wine list was generally too expensive. The dessert menu was ridiculous. Rather than focus on doing desserts well, the pastry chef feels the need to attempt to incorporate vegetables or other unexpected ingredients into each dessert (e.g., beets in chocolate torte). The only table sufficiently large to seat my party of 5 was in the basement near the kitchen--not a good table. Our server was annoying, poured the wine too fast to get us to buy a second bottle, and gave little insight to the menu. I won't be going back and can't recommend it.

Stellar food with great range of choices. The tasting menu is a particular treat, and the desserts soar. But - bare tables are kind of jarring and utilitarian with such fine food, and the decor is a bit too sparse and fails to live up to the food

When we left the restaurant at 9.30pm on a Wednesday night, there wasn't a free table in the place, which is unheard of on the Upper West Side. The food was outstanding, the service was let down by the fact that waiter didn't offer us a drink when we sat down, only water, which was poor. Will definitely be back, though.

Friendly, helpful server. Avocado salad was excellent. Halibut was delicious, as was the sirloin and lasagna duo. The peanut butter dessert was incredible. Dishes I was not impressed by included the white asparagus app w tuna tartar - the tartar was great, but the asparagus was not crisp or fresh tasting; and the bread pudding dessert was good but not great in comparison with the peanut butter dessert. Additionally, Dovetail desperately needs to hire a new coffee server as the latte was abysmal and literally undrinkable. But, overall the food that WAS good made up for any missteps and the ambiance had a nice chic and paired-down feel.

The experience for me at Dovetail was like "eating art". Every course was artfully placed on the plate and every bite was an experience. The ambience was high end but a bit stringent for me. I prefer a more relaxed or casual atmosphere. I would recommend it for a special occasion or a business dinner.

Enjoyed the tastings dinner. Loved the soft shell crab. Service was less than perfect. Water glass was filled at the meal's beginning and never replenished until I requested it. No butter was presented at table. Bus boys whisked away plates too quickly--even before one of us was finished. Our waiter was friendly. Iasked for a bloody mary. He then came back and said that tomato juice was not available in the restaurant
