Diner Reviews
  • "Although everything about Dovetail was good, I just could not justify the $250 bill for four people. The kicker? This was four drinks ( one only club soda) and appetizers. That's it! The presentation was lovely but not worth the expense. Sorry, Dovetail."

  • "I called ahead and ask the host please send us at a quiet table, as this was a first date. From some of the recommendations I have read, the restaurant was great, but some suggested they felt rushed. I did not find this to be the case at all. I thought the service food ambience was excellent. I'm very much looking forward to going back."

  • "During the last visit to this restaurant (it's not my first) I didn't feel previous "special" treatment. Usual restaurant, as many other places you can go at much lower price; however, the food was great - even though noticed reduced portion size."

  • "My husband and I had a wonderfully romantic night out in spite of the rain last saturday. We both really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. In addition to a great menu the chef added lots of extra bites that were all delightful. We both really enjoyed our night out and we cant wait to go again. We're both dying to see what chef will do on his spring menu."

  • "Tried Dovetail for the first time for lunch with a friend. Greeting was friendly and professional. Decor elegant and simple but with some nice art to keep it modern. Service was perfect. Food outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed all three courses and the chicken I had was possibly the best chicken I have ever eaten. Delightful! Go!"

  • "We were trying to find a restaurant where we could have a fine dining experience for a milestone birthday. I am vegan but my spouse is a meat eater so sometimes it's hard to find a place. Dovetail was awesome! His food was amazing, but my vegan versions were also amazing. They really went out of their way to make me great vegan food . We did the chef's tasting and it was delicious!!! Highly recommend for a special night!"

  • "The chef's tasting plus reserved wine pairing was delicious. Especially the foie gras and sherry combination."

  • "Took my girlfriend for a surprise birthday. She loved it, as did I. Great service, great food, and an overall great time."

  • "Their 1 Michelin star is well deserved, every bite is tasty and enjoyable. The chocolate soufflé is divine, the service was very good, they went out of their way to make us a soufflé when it was not on the brunch menu. We just enjoyed this restaurant tremendously and it was quiet which from a previous experience in NYC I find it to be a rare find. I warmly recommend the place to anyone looking to have a lovely and very satisfying meal."

  • "Quite disappointing. The Bouillabaisse was everything but a soup. The timing of the serving was very bad. The main courses were cold and had to be returned to the kitchen. To have some additional bread we had to wait 10 min. The restaurant does not deserve the Michelin star it was awarded"

  • "across the street from the museum of natural history attentiveness starts as one walks through the door. the $88 dollar course menu is a great way to get to know the offerings. try the arctic char...heaven"

  • "Great for special occasion. The food is really good and the chef tends to use unconditional method to make traditional food. For example, the squash soup has some melted marshmallow and sage in it. The dessert, brownie type thingy, also was complemented with sage. They surprises you. The service is also wonderful. They come every 10mins to check on you and treat you like a royalty. The price is a little high so I say it Honolulu be a special occasion night out."

  • "Sticker shock for me, coming from out of town. Maybe all NYC restaurants are this expensive. But the food was excellent, so maybe I shouldn't complain."

  • "As usual the Monday night vegetable oriented diner didn't desapoint. Plates were generous, colorful and intriguing. Service was impeccable without being overbearing."

  • "One of the best fine dining restaurants in New York. Can't wait to go back."

  • "I was expecting a lot more from a Michelin starred restaurant. As a restaurant professional who has worked in fine dining establishments as realize my standard is very high, but I try to keep an open mind. My partners steak was seared improperly, resulting in a thick chewy layer of well done meat around a small medium-rare interior, which is how she wanted it. My swordfish was quite old and undercooked, the dish sounded very interesting but was laden with salt and in other flavors came through. Overall a disappointing experience for the money. Would definitely not go back."

  • "I think of really great restaurants as cultural experiences, not unlike the theater. If a friend had not told us that Dovetail was superb, we might have missed it. Four of us chose very different things, and for each of us the dishes were among the best we remember from our meals at great restaurants around the world. My grilled fois gras prompted a long entry in my diary (which usually addresses great paintings and plays). Service was exact, attentive, and never intrusive."

  • "Very poor slow service. Could not even make martinis correctly, had to be sent back. Food good, not great. Smelled like disinfectant."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "Our last few meals at Dovetail have been uneven - some dishes absolutely delicious, while others quite ordinary. Given our past experiences and the price-point, this is disappointing."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "Thank you Dovetail for providing the highest of the haute cuisine for us vegetarians! A one of a kind restaurant. Dovetail has replaced Gramercy Tavern as our go-to place for special occasions."

  • "The totality of the experience was superb. My wife and I enjoyed the 10 course tasting menu while my daughter had the vegetarian tasting menu. All of the courses were very creative and executed with wonderful detail. The wine list was heavy on the French, but we were able to find a good California wine more along our likes. The tab for 3 of us was $600, but given the rarity of such a splurge, well worth it. If we come back to NYC for a visit, this will be our first choice."

  • "Very nice experience. Food was excellent, albeit expensive. Portions small, but supplemented with amuse-bouche and a little hors d'oeuvre tray of delicious corn bread, cracker and one other thing. The service was attentive and friendly. No complaints about anything. It's just expensive. But you know that when you go."

  • "I've been to DoveTail twice. Right after my Engagement and a year later on that Anniversary. Both times, DoveTail did something special for us, it was amazing. Food was fantastic, every bite packed with flavor. I wish had an anniversary every day"

  • "Beautiful restaurant , very busy , noise level a bit above what is comfortable due to a fully packed restaurant , wine list could need some work ....improvement on the selection of American Chardonnays in various price levels would be welcome .Food was excellent and service was excellent .A bit pricey ...but we will be back for special occasions .The party room downstairs looks very nice and maybe something for an upcoming special event ."

  • "I took a colleague to lunch at Dovetail last Wednesday. By now, I'm used to their uniform standard of excellence. She was completely blown away -- particularly by the salmon. We had a great time."

  • "I had an amazing lunch course at dovetail. The beef tartare was delicious and the color was beautiful. My chicken was soft and moist. I could not believe that I was having chicken. Panna cotta was great too. It was not sweet enough and tangy that I could not stop digging it!!!! I definitely want to go back!"

  • "My review of Dovetail is colored by the fact that we arrived on time for a 1:30 reservation to be greeted by a sea of other people waiting to be seated. We were told it would be 15 minutes but after a 30 minute wait we were still not seated. Upon protest we were seated but then had to wait to be served. The food was well prepared but not outstanding. I would be curious to try the restaurant again when they are serving their regular menu and they are not overwhelmed by Restaurant Week patrons."

  • "We visited restaurant Dovetail during restaurant week- festival. Because of the festival, launch menu was quite limited, good options, though (I don´t know if they serve launch normally). The best was small salty bakes before soup, we really liked them! Staff was polite and professional and the atmosphere tranquil and very warm. Only minus was that we has to wait 45 minutes for a free table, it took too long.."

  • "Small plates, each thoughtfully created. Most of it was delicious namely crab risotto and lamb entree. Desserts are sublime."
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "Cured carrot appetizer was a real treat, and the roasted cabbage with béarnaise sauce elevated that humble veg to the place of prime beef. Gutsy and satisfying. The desserts, once exciting, seem to have slid toward the ordinary. A baked squiggle of basil cream could not elevate a square of chocolate cake that could have come from Crumbs. But this was a Restaurant Week meal, and perhaps they weren't trying that hard."

  • "Food is really delicious, but they charged an extra $3 for my dining companion to have his Manhattan straight up rather than on the rocks, which seemed very tacky to both of us for an upscale restaurant. This left us with a decidedly unpleasant feeling about this restaurant."

  • "Good food, good service! There was sophisticated and quiet even though a lot of people in lunch time in Restaurant week."

  • "We planed to go to dovetail for restaurant week on sunday, but I didn't careful about the information that the restaurant week lunch services on weekdays. What's a pity, we didn't eat the food on the restaurant week lunch food. But never mind, the sunday lunch menu is also perfect. The dishes are delicate and beautiful, I like the cookies most, though 3 is too much for me. The service is outstanding. It is comfortable to have lunch there."

  • "The food was of excellent quality. Unfortunatly the total amount in both of the tasting menys in total where too much, so the last three courses could not be properly enjoyed as we where getting way to full. In addition Dovetail seems to have one major problem - it is completly overstaffed. Being disturb by waiters every minute, either removing plates before the entire table has finished, or refilling water when the glass hasnt even been touched is certainly not fit for a michelin starred establishment."
