Diner Reviews
  • "2 of us arrived for an 8:15 reservation for 3. The hostess asked if we were all there, and we informed her that 2 of us had arrived early and that we would be ordering for the 3rd, who wouldn't be able to join us til later. She told us she couldn't seat us til our friend arrived. She just couldn't get it. So the table literally sat empty while we waited. Silly. Once seated the wait staff more than made up for the inexperienced hostess. WS was knowledgable about the offerings and made great recommendations. The meal was great - flavorful, interesting, great presentation, nice portion size. I was a little disappointed that some of the more traditional items weren't on the menu, but that forced us to try something new and we enjoyed it."

  • "Dosa was excellent!!! Seriously! We had issues with the service a couple of times before and was so happy that we gave Dosa one more try because Dosa's service have matched their food. So now we will be happily returning to Dosa with our friends and family from India."

  • "I love this food & they really try to serve well but it's so crowded & noisy--I felt like I was in a cafeteria. They keep up a frezied pace but it would be nice to have less activity."

  • "Great place for small groups, dates and foodies as it encourages sampling and sharing between people. All dishes are distinctively different from traditional Indian restaurants so it's a good place to bring out-of-towners looking for new culinary adventures as well. Dosas and Uttapams always make an effect and I particularly loved the lamb curry during our last visit. Our waitress was very accommodating of our group and made excellent recommendations as the menu can be a bit overwhelming to new guests. It's a popular scene, met two other friends who were dining there also that night. Had an excellent time overall. The ambiance is rather high energy so if you are looking for something quiet, this won't be a good place though."

  • "Dosa was recommended to us by a friend and we were very happy we found it. The food was exceptional. And the cocktails were great too. If given the chance we'd definitely go back and absolutely recommend it to friends and family."

  • "Was looking for some south Indian food and found this eatery on Open Table, so we decided to try it out as we were only a few blocks away @ a local watering hole. Enjoyed the cuisine, but nothing spectacular to detail or heap praise on. Our server was a bit aloof and it was noisy, but overall the ambiance was nice."

  • "Best Indian I've had! Flavors we're complex and delish. Cocktails were amazing and unique. We also had a fantastic server."

  • "The menu at Dosa is intriguing, and for the most part, the kitchen delivers some great flavors in its dishes. But I could not enjoy my meal over the din. My dinner companion and I were unable to converse in a relaxing fashion. I don't know why restaurants think a loud place makes it " happening." I won't be back."

  • "Dosa is our favorite restaurant to visit on special occasions. We specifically like the 'Lamb Keema Dosa' which is unheard of and hard to find even back in India. The Sambhar and Chutney are awesome too, which reflects the true South Indian food taste. A bit expensive but highly recommended for celebrating a special occasion."

  • "Excellent authentic South Indian choices and the quality if food is one of the best Indian cuisine in the Bay Area. Will definitely go back"

  • "Great southern Indian food with a reasonable price. Especially appetizers were great."

  • "Indian food is my favorite - after 12 trips to India I'm seldom fully satisfied by Indian food in the US. That changed on Saturday night. I often peruse the menu online in advance but didn't have time so my surprise and pleasure were immediately known to my dining companions! The small plates were all unique, flavorful, wonderfully spiced, and fresh - We had five and all were excellent - especially the lamb chops! And the dosas - Oh, my they're truly authentic - we had four of them and all were perfection - Dosa, Masala Dosa, Mung bean/fennel dosa, and asparagus/cheese - all were perfection. I tried to order the habanero but our server cautioned me and brought a taste - STAY AWAY unless you can swallow fire. This is amzaing Indian food!"

  • "The food was awesome. I wished there was some warning about the amount of heat in the food. We eat pretty spicy foods and the meals made us sweat."

  • "Been here several times, after it was recommended by a group of Indian friends who described it as "authentic" southern indian cuisine. Very different from all the traditional americanized Indian food you generally find around. Good choice for mixed veggie/non veggie groups, they have good selection of lamb and chicken plates. The Dosas are the signature plates, but the menu is a lot richer and if you want to pay a bit more (~30 bucks) their entrees are superb. On Mondays they have Indian street food (enjoy them with your fingers) appetizers. They're great and very very interesting. Better make a reservation, they are generally packed."

  • "The food was fantastic. The dosas were perfectly cooked, and the vegan meatballs were incredibly flavorful. Our waiter offered us a great wine and a healthy pour to test it with. "

  • "I hate to review negatively like this but this is not the first time that we have gone there and received service that was quite slow and food that just wasn't that good. We ordered drinks as soon as we sat down which never came. Was another 20-25 minutes at least until someone came back to check in or take our order from the time that we sat. Food came out and it was not very good. I did not even eat one of the dishes after tasting it and granted I should have said something, but given the lack of service & attention already, we just decided to cut our losses, pay our bill and just never go back to this location. As an aside, this does not include their other Japantown location which has always been good."

  • "I hadn't dined at this Dosa location before and was a little surprised by the bustling, elbow-to-elbow ambience, but the food was quite excellent and we were able to have a nice conversation over diner. This is not authentic Indian, but more east-meets-west, with good wine-pairings and fusion dishes like truffle-potato dosa. Over all a nice experience, but I prefer the other, more spacious location."

  • "What this city needs is a really good Indian restaurant--Dosa ain't! If anyone can remember Taj of India(real ambience)--they had great chutneys (homemade) and they know what a Pimm's Cup #4 IS--not what the bar at Dosa concocted. Dosa is not ANY value for the money. The dosas are terrible and a waste of time. The only authentic dish was a Dahi Vada. Actually, Dosa is a joke restaurant--all hype! I will never return and certainly won't recommend Dosa to anyone (except to warn them)! I don't like surcharges added on either--so they can give their employees healthcare--Dosa can afford to pay--why should I be the one. I am going to make dining in SF much cheaper, because I will just reduce the gratuity on my credit card. "

  • "Love the tasting menu! Provides a few choices in each category so you are not overwhelmed. I'd recommend the beer or wine flight as well because the pairings are inspired"

  • "Tasty and delicious indian food with lots of innovation.Impressed !! but for some spicy food like mango habenero dosas, the waiter should aware customer about its spicyness or else there should be a waiver for customer to sign when they order any spicy dosas like Masala Mango habenero dosas."

  • "Nice to have food that not only tastes good it is good for you... Also very festive.. This restaurant is great for both casual and special dining events."

  • "Dosa is one of the best SF restaurants I've ever enjoyed. The southern Indian cooking is completely different from the standard curry-and-vindaloo offered at most local Indian restaurants. It's fresh, creative and beautifully presented. Even the dal and rice are unique and outstanding. And they do a great job matching beverages (both beer and wine!) to food. The Valencia street spot is very hip, happening and casual (and small, crowded and loud). Overall, you get food, drink and service that would be a bargain at twice the price."

  • "Excellent fare, served with flair and a decent value. The only minus was the size of the wine pour - a bit skimpy for a $12 glass. Otherwise a great time here."

  • "The service is not good, with the exception of the bar and at brunch. The waiter never came over to our table while others who came much later were getting their food. We had two children which were counted towards a party of 5, with a minimum 20% gratuity. If the service had been provided we would have been happy to pay. Even the kids asked about why the person seemed upset. We got the wrong order but decided given the attitude, it was better to eat whatever we got. This is not the first time I have experienced such service at this location. "

  • "I had a great Easter Sunday brunch at DOSA with their spritzer, lamb roti and dahl starter served with yogurt, tamarind and mint. I also had their sorbet of the day which was lemon and ginger."

  • "I've always enjoyed eating at Dosa, this being my fourth time. There are enough interesting items that I want to slowly work my way through the menu. The only problem I have is the saltiness of some of the dishes."

  • "We enjoyed a super meal with excellent, creative food. The only down-side was that the restaurant had run out of both their local craft beers, which was a huge disappointment to my husband, since we usually drink beer with Indian food. The waiter was very patient as my husband made a choice of wine, but it seems odd that the restaurant could run out of both its interesting beers on a Friday night."

  • "Trying to end a vacation with a nice meal can be hard. But DOSA on Valencia was a real find. It's not a huge restaurant but it more than makes up for it with the authentic food and and great service. The server was attentive but did not interrupt too much. The food was relatively fast (~8 min) and AMAZING! Although it didn't seem like a lot of food, my girlfriend and I were more than filled. Bottom Line: Great place to go if you're looking for some amazing Southern Indian food for a relatively good price"

  • "I like Dosa because it probably has the best annotated menu I've seen in the Bay Area, and I've been on a pretty restrictive diet as of late. That said, I didn't feel the customer service was up to par when I went on Saturday night with a few friends and the food was much greasier than I remembered it being when I visited the Fillmore spot a year ago. In all, it was still hopping around 10PM with lots of diverse patrons, so the ambiance was certainly energetic, warm and not overly loud. If you're looking for Indian food, I'd definitely recommend it."

  • "Excellent food; only down side is it is not cheap. With two appetizers, two main courses and a bottle of wine it can easily be over $125 for two people. Still if you don't mind (or can afford it) it is worth it."

  • "We started with drinks. I had the ginger rum drink, my husband the beet and vodka drink, and our friend didn't see any she liked. So she asked the bartender to make something up with cardamom and vodka. My drink was just delicious, the distilled essence of ginger (yum!) My husband loved his. But we all switched to our friends special For the next round. The subtle flavor was outstanding. We ordered and shared the night's special (cod), masala Dosa with truffle oil, a Dosa with pepper, spiced pepper lamb with lemon rice, and a chana. All were exquisitely delicious, especially the chana. The server was fun and helpful, as was the hostess. Great location in a lively and evolving part of the Mission. We will be back."
