Diner Reviews
  • "Great southern Indian food with a reasonable price. Especially appetizers were great."

  • "Indian food is my favorite - after 12 trips to India I'm seldom fully satisfied by Indian food in the US. That changed on Saturday night. I often peruse the menu online in advance but didn't have time so my surprise and pleasure were immediately known to my dining companions! The small plates were all unique, flavorful, wonderfully spiced, and fresh - We had five and all were excellent - especially the lamb chops! And the dosas - Oh, my they're truly authentic - we had four of them and all were perfection - Dosa, Masala Dosa, Mung bean/fennel dosa, and asparagus/cheese - all were perfection. I tried to order the habanero but our server cautioned me and brought a taste - STAY AWAY unless you can swallow fire. This is amzaing Indian food!"

  • "This restaurant is a wonderful Mission gem!!! The food & service is great!!! It gets very crowded & a bit noisy but worth the wait!!! It's a must try eatery!!!"

  • "The food was awesome. I wished there was some warning about the amount of heat in the food. We eat pretty spicy foods and the meals made us sweat."

  • "Been here several times, after it was recommended by a group of Indian friends who described it as "authentic" southern indian cuisine. Very different from all the traditional americanized Indian food you generally find around. Good choice for mixed veggie/non veggie groups, they have good selection of lamb and chicken plates. The Dosas are the signature plates, but the menu is a lot richer and if you want to pay a bit more (~30 bucks) their entrees are superb. On Mondays they have Indian street food (enjoy them with your fingers) appetizers. They're great and very very interesting. Better make a reservation, they are generally packed."

  • "What this city needs is a really good Indian restaurant--Dosa ain't! If anyone can remember Taj of India(real ambience)--they had great chutneys (homemade) and they know what a Pimm's Cup #4 IS--not what the bar at Dosa concocted. Dosa is not ANY value for the money. The dosas are terrible and a waste of time. The only authentic dish was a Dahi Vada. Actually, Dosa is a joke restaurant--all hype! I will never return and certainly won't recommend Dosa to anyone (except to warn them)! I don't like surcharges added on either--so they can give their employees healthcare--Dosa can afford to pay--why should I be the one. I am going to make dining in SF much cheaper, because I will just reduce the gratuity on my credit card. "

  • "I hate to review negatively like this but this is not the first time that we have gone there and received service that was quite slow and food that just wasn't that good. We ordered drinks as soon as we sat down which never came. Was another 20-25 minutes at least until someone came back to check in or take our order from the time that we sat. Food came out and it was not very good. I did not even eat one of the dishes after tasting it and granted I should have said something, but given the lack of service & attention already, we just decided to cut our losses, pay our bill and just never go back to this location. As an aside, this does not include their other Japantown location which has always been good."

  • "The food was fantastic. The dosas were perfectly cooked, and the vegan meatballs were incredibly flavorful. Our waiter offered us a great wine and a healthy pour to test it with. "

  • "I hadn't dined at this Dosa location before and was a little surprised by the bustling, elbow-to-elbow ambience, but the food was quite excellent and we were able to have a nice conversation over diner. This is not authentic Indian, but more east-meets-west, with good wine-pairings and fusion dishes like truffle-potato dosa. Over all a nice experience, but I prefer the other, more spacious location."

  • "Love the tasting menu! Provides a few choices in each category so you are not overwhelmed. I'd recommend the beer or wine flight as well because the pairings are inspired"

  • "Tasty and delicious indian food with lots of innovation.Impressed !! but for some spicy food like mango habenero dosas, the waiter should aware customer about its spicyness or else there should be a waiver for customer to sign when they order any spicy dosas like Masala Mango habenero dosas."

  • "Nice to have food that not only tastes good it is good for you... Also very festive.. This restaurant is great for both casual and special dining events."

  • "Dosa is one of the best SF restaurants I've ever enjoyed. The southern Indian cooking is completely different from the standard curry-and-vindaloo offered at most local Indian restaurants. It's fresh, creative and beautifully presented. Even the dal and rice are unique and outstanding. And they do a great job matching beverages (both beer and wine!) to food. The Valencia street spot is very hip, happening and casual (and small, crowded and loud). Overall, you get food, drink and service that would be a bargain at twice the price."

  • "Fantastic front of the house staff. The food was hit and miss. But overall a great experience. "

  • "Excellent fare, served with flair and a decent value. The only minus was the size of the wine pour - a bit skimpy for a $12 glass. Otherwise a great time here."

  • "Thanks to the amazing staff, my sister had a most memorable party-- the bartender serenaded us, and the waitress gave all sorts marriage advice. A wonderful start to the night. Thank you all! "

  • "The service is not good, with the exception of the bar and at brunch. The waiter never came over to our table while others who came much later were getting their food. We had two children which were counted towards a party of 5, with a minimum 20% gratuity. If the service had been provided we would have been happy to pay. Even the kids asked about why the person seemed upset. We got the wrong order but decided given the attitude, it was better to eat whatever we got. This is not the first time I have experienced such service at this location. "

  • "I had a great Easter Sunday brunch at DOSA with their spritzer, lamb roti and dahl starter served with yogurt, tamarind and mint. I also had their sorbet of the day which was lemon and ginger."

  • "San Francisco's modern take on Indian food. Foodies and Indian-food lovers alike will enjoy the creative and flavorful dishes here. Service was fantastic too. Will definitely come back to sample more of the extensive menu."

  • "I've always enjoyed eating at Dosa, this being my fourth time. There are enough interesting items that I want to slowly work my way through the menu. The only problem I have is the saltiness of some of the dishes."

  • "We enjoyed a super meal with excellent, creative food. The only down-side was that the restaurant had run out of both their local craft beers, which was a huge disappointment to my husband, since we usually drink beer with Indian food. The waiter was very patient as my husband made a choice of wine, but it seems odd that the restaurant could run out of both its interesting beers on a Friday night."

  • "Excellent food; only down side is it is not cheap. With two appetizers, two main courses and a bottle of wine it can easily be over $125 for two people. Still if you don't mind (or can afford it) it is worth it."

  • "I like Dosa because it probably has the best annotated menu I've seen in the Bay Area, and I've been on a pretty restrictive diet as of late. That said, I didn't feel the customer service was up to par when I went on Saturday night with a few friends and the food was much greasier than I remembered it being when I visited the Fillmore spot a year ago. In all, it was still hopping around 10PM with lots of diverse patrons, so the ambiance was certainly energetic, warm and not overly loud. If you're looking for Indian food, I'd definitely recommend it."

  • "Trying to end a vacation with a nice meal can be hard. But DOSA on Valencia was a real find. It's not a huge restaurant but it more than makes up for it with the authentic food and and great service. The server was attentive but did not interrupt too much. The food was relatively fast (~8 min) and AMAZING! Although it didn't seem like a lot of food, my girlfriend and I were more than filled. Bottom Line: Great place to go if you're looking for some amazing Southern Indian food for a relatively good price"

  • "Wow! This place captured the taste of south indian food better than south india! All total we tried a Dosa, Uttapam, and a small dish which was almost more than we could eat for 2 people. I highly recommend the Paper Masala Dosa. It comes out in a giant crunchy shell that reminded me of the same way they make it in Pune, India. The small dish was a tasty multiple mushroom and other ingredient mixture that they reformed into an artistic mushroom shape. The Uttapam was also very tasty but overshadowed by the incredible other dishes. I also tried the Bengali Gimlet which was refreshing with just a perfect amount of extra spice to it. For being a busy restaurant it wasn't very loud and it was easy to hear and talk with your fellow diners."

  • "Tasty food. Friendly and helpful staff. I had never had South India food. They help to explain what the dishes were and recommend several tasty options. I would recommend DOSA to small groups and to make a reservation because it seemed to be a popular place."

  • "We started with drinks. I had the ginger rum drink, my husband the beet and vodka drink, and our friend didn't see any she liked. So she asked the bartender to make something up with cardamom and vodka. My drink was just delicious, the distilled essence of ginger (yum!) My husband loved his. But we all switched to our friends special For the next round. The subtle flavor was outstanding. We ordered and shared the night's special (cod), masala Dosa with truffle oil, a Dosa with pepper, spiced pepper lamb with lemon rice, and a chana. All were exquisitely delicious, especially the chana. The server was fun and helpful, as was the hostess. Great location in a lively and evolving part of the Mission. We will be back."

  • "Food is pricy for being so inconsistent. Management has bad manners; the young guy with the hat, I think he was the manager, should really get fired for being so rude to paying customers. After spending $200 for 4 people, we were asked to leave because the restaurant was full and they wanted our half table (we shared our table with some other people we did not know) empty for whoever might come into the restaurant. I left so upset by this rude behavior and I will never go back there again, nor would I recommend DOSA to anyone."

  • "Had a great evening at Dosa; the place is a bit noisy for my tastes but the service and good make up for it. Cheap bill too."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "As I indicated above, food, service, on time reservation -- all great. But the noise level made it almost impossible to have a conversation. So my husband and I had to mostly eat our delectable meal in silence -- exchanges smiles and gestures rather than words. Our server, a young beautiful woman, was attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "We enjoyed the food, but we both felt the waitress was truly annoyed being there. She was in a constant rush. Our main dishes came out way too fast. We had barely touched the Dosas. It took; for what seemed forever, before we could even get water. My advice to the restaurant is to focus on staff before they drive away your customers."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant and I was very pleased with the service. We had booked ahead through Open Table, but when we got there, they offered us a high table in the front area (it felt more like the bar area). We asked to wait for a regular table as we finished up our drinks at the bar. The manager stepped right in and not only served us our drinks quickly, but checked in with us several times on the status of our table. And to top it all off, he took the cost of our bar drinks off the final bill, with no complaints from us at all. I appreciate good service over all else, and because of this, I would recommend Dosa on Valencia."

  • "Did't know exactly what to order so we asked the server to bring us four starters and four entrees of varying sauces and ingredients. and of course a Dosa. She did not disappoint. We were all happy with the choices she made for us. Each had a different level of heat and a flavor and all were delicious."

  • "We met a friend for lunch at DOSA. She had spent much time in India, truly understood the cuisine and culture, and required a vegetarian menu. She also has very serious mobility problems and the greeter was very gracious and helpful in getting her wheelchair placed at a table... servers were also knowledgeable and helpful in getting her special food requests handled. A difficult situation became a delightful and satisfying experience, thanks to their help."
