Diner Reviews
  • "We went to Dosa with another couple of friends on a Saturday night. The food was great. The waitress apparently offered one of our orders to the next table. Ok that happens. The next glasses of wine took time to arrive but not a major hurdle. My friend and I split the check. I saw that my friend put a $48 tip on his $140 check. He had followed the recommendations from his check. The recommendations for tip were for the whole bill. The waitress said this was a "glitch in the system". How can a modern system like that write on the same small piece of paper: your total is $140 and an 18% tip is $48?? I can't help but see foul play. I discourage people to go to a dishonest establishment but in all fairness the food and the place are great."

  • "Wonderful place for a special occasion, the staff took great care of us and we loved our experience. A fun, modern take on Indian classics."

  • "I've been to both the Mission location as well as this location in the Fillmore. Both have delicious food, and I would recommend both for lunch or dinner. The Fillmore location is across the street from the Kabuki movie theater, so it's a nice date or night for dinner and a movie. Personal favorites: - Chennai Chicken - Samosas 'North and South' - Tamil Lamb - South Indian Moons Uttapam As far as drinks, the wine selection is very good (better at the bottle level than by the glass) and they have a full cocktail list. Great space (big and a bit cavernous noise-wise which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for). Good, lively spot when you find yourself in the neighborhood."

  • "I have gone here before for the Dosa and entree, but this restaurant is also a great place if you want to share smaller plates and arent sure how hungry you are. The list of these plates is sizable and there is a great variety, even if there are people in your party with complicated dietary limitations"

  • "The food was excellent, try Batura bread, everything is a bit too spicy even for me! But all and all was excellent."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "Went with a girlfriend for our first time to enjoy drinks and small plates. The food was good, drink menu needs more vodka cocktails, the service was aweful, our waitress disappeared and forgort to bring one of our small plates. I would only return for a quick glass of wine and small plate at the bar for the price."

  • "Loved the summer veggie dosa and the apricot dessert!"

  • "don't need the same much more then that. When I was giving a keynote address in an industrial section of India, two executives and their wives walked up to me and explained that they used to live in the Bay Area and that they have really missed eating at Dosa. I had been living near the other location in the mission and have never tried it until I received the recommendation. Since then, have gone back many times. Also, excellent cocktails."

  • "I came here at long last with a party of 6 and ordered several dishes to share. The dosas did not disappoint! In particular, the rich sambar served on the side reminded me of being back in Bangalore, as did the authentic chutneys. I also really liked the Chennai Chicken. Strong service, great pooris, interesting mash-ups for those interested in finding truffles in their Indian cuisine."

  • "Our food is always delicious here. Lots of vegan options! They have wonderful cocktails and great service. At one point, I dropped my fork on the floor (and picked it up myself). I didn't see a server to let them know, but within minutes, a staff member arrived with a new fork for me, unprompted. Highly recommended!"

  • "Dosa is a family favorite which never ceases to amaze friends we bring there for the first time. The fresh, vibrant flavors, based on locally sourced ingredients, the imaginative preparations and lovely service, all make Dosa Fillmore worth a trip. The prices are high for Indian food, and for a couple of dishes unreasonably so, but the quality generally justifies the expense."

  • "We love the food and the setting. All the staff, save our waitress, were engaging, competent, and more than welcoming. Our waitress was a wet, drippy dishrag of lethargy, disinterest, and inattentiveness. She cast a gloom over the entire meal. When we commented on the amount of cartilage found in our duck appetizer, she reached onto the table to yank the plate away--no explanation about why there would be that amount of cartilage, no apology. I asked her to please let the kitchen know about the cartilage, but I don't believe she could have been bothered to convey that information. Will we go back? Absolutely. Will we ever be seated at her station again? NEVER!!!!!!!!"

  • "I was not impressed with the food. The quality and the quantity are not worth the money paid. The entree menu lacked variety as well."

  • "Great Indian food, friendly service and nice atmosphere. Definitely coming back!"
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "The food at Dosa is always wonderful. Because we went in early and emphasized the hard of hearing 50% of our party of 4, they seated us, as we had requested, in a corner, which was adequate as far as noise was concerned. Generaly, it's a very noisy place, but the food is unbeatable. We all had the summer tasting menu - way too much food. Took home last untouched course and enjoyed a good dinner next night."

  • "Been to the mission dosa and food was excellent. Every dish here at the Fillmore location left my mouth on fire. It was far from enjoyable because I couldn't taste anything but fire! Jalapeños? Habineros? Whatever it was they need to cut back!"

  • "prepare your palette for divine flavors of india. Food is outstanding, interesting and exciting. Server was excellent, explaining everything to us with care and patience."

  • "This was my first experience eating Indian cuisine and I can happily report that the results were fantastic. Our waiter was really helpful and guided us through the extensive menu providing much needed suggestions with a genuine and courteous attitude."

  • "Had forgotten how good the food was at Dosa's. The special goat chops cooked the way they usually cooked lamb chops was outstanding. We had the white truffle dosa, masala potato dosa, lentil fritters with yoghurt, pulled duck and two types of bread. All were excellent. It is a very noisy restaurant which also decreases my ratings because I don't like have to yell over the ambient noise to hear your dining companions. The waiter was very good, suggested some pacing re the breads, recommendations. Food was presented efficiently, dirty plates and flatware replaced appropriately. Going back next week!"

  • "I'm usually very generous with my ratings and reviews but Dosa just disappoints. If you are looking for a fun evening out and don't care about the food or price, Dosa can pass as a hip place with nice ambience & creative food. But if you are looking for Indian food with any authentic taste or a decent service (without arrogance or courtesy) or care about value for money even when eating expensive food, then skip Dosa. There are tons of better alternatives in SF. We ordered the dosas, idli & sambar, dahi vada etc. which is usually pretty hard to screw up. The dosa would get 3/5 rating and the sambar + chutneys will get 1/5. The entree sizes are decent but appetizer portions are quite sad. I wouldn't be going back there again."

  • "we had friends from Hawaii and the 4 of us shared several plates...we are newbies to south Indian cuisine and were pleasantly surprised by the texture, taste and comfort of the dishes we ordered.....very patiently tutored by the wait staff and the dishes were excellent...we are looking forward to coming in again...we found the prices high...but after review...we would still like to return and try some different Masalas and other dishes..we are not drinkers so we took our sugar through deserts....very decadent...we like it...the upstairs seating by the stairs was great for people watching..we are close enough to walk down to Fillmore St.so we consider Dosa a neighborhood gem."

  • "Dosa serves fantastic food of the southern India region. Today, Todd and Terry provided fantastic service. Of particular note was their knowledge of India, the native ingredients and how the food fits into the culture. They are always happy to share their knowledge which adds greatly to the experience. With their expertise, we have tried new dishes. Everything has been delicious."

  • "Ate at the bar with my date. The bartenders were great. They recommended some great wines to go with our meals, including a great after dinner meal."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "I enjoyed my dining experience, but I was not blown away by the food. Everything was very good and the service was nice. I wasn't a big fan of the atmosphere. I went with three girlfriends and its a good spot for sharing plates and trying new things."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "This is my second time dining at this San Francisco gem. Excellent authentic food. We sat at the communal table, which turned out to be fun, chatting with other diners. Order the Dosa Masala - it's fabulous and unusual."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "The food is definitely a notch above the tired old Indian standbys. The sheer volume served is a bit huge for the price, but if you want a little extra style in your setting and menu choices, it's a nice choice. I like the party factor. It's a nice spot for dinner in the middle of a big weekend."

  • "My husband is Indian and we love eating dosa. Dosa on Fillmore has been our number one choice for a few years. There are many choices, the service is good and staff very friendly. We hadn't gone to Dosa in some time and went ther for Father's Day and ordered a very reasonable meal on terms of the size. We didn't feel like we were overrating or drinking, however we both came out feeling very heavy and bloated for the rest of the day. We have no idea what it was in the food that made us feel this way as it tasted really good. I can only think of the fat being used for cooking as being the issue here. That said, it may work just fine for other people, so do give it a try. I recommend Brunch rather than lunch, this food will last you all day."

  • "High priced Indian street food in a nice location. Have had much better in many other places in the SF Bay area."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "For the first time I was disappointed - nothing obviously wrong, but it didn't taste as good as usual. I am a regular there, and maybe I was in an off day, or Dosa was in an off day, but I went out wondering if like many this awesome restaurant will lose its charm over time."

  • "Great dine about town menu with generous portions. The scallops are a must! Food was delicious but had to wait 30 minutes for a table even though we made reservations."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "Dosa is always a delight. Delicious food, great atmosphere, knowledgeable and attentive wait staff. Head upstairs for a quieter dinner."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "I love Dahi Vada, and the Dahi Vada I got here was gorgeous. It was really good too, although I think I would have dropped the cumin balance just a smidge. I also got the lamb, which was tasty and fairly spicy. It's a little too fancy of a place to feel like sharing is appropriate, which is a bit of an odd vibe for Indian cuisine. I definitely recommend getting one of the dosa dishes as an entree, and try not to stuff yourself silly."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "We loved our server! Indian cuisine was new to us and she gave us a lot of background and tips on what to order, how to eat it and what the sauces were."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "Great Food and Service. Delicious Dosa and Curry. Will come back for sure."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "Dosa had been recommended to me by numerous co-workers and I was excited to see it on the Dine about Town list. The service was great, the lamb was incredible and everything was just the right amount of spicy and flavorful."

  • "The food was delicious and the service couldn't have been better! "

  • "We dined at Dosa on Fillmore during Dine About Town week. The menu for the evening was well worth the price. The staff was extremely helpful and provided us with very interesting information about the food, its preparation and its background in India. every course was presented beautifully. The scallops were the most taste-filled and perfectly cooked. The second course spicy dosa was incredible. The third course was tamil lamb curry. The lamb was high quality and tasty."

  • "The food as usual was delicious but today the service just felt meh. Drinks came 10 mins after entrees, the table we were seated at in the middle of the floor meant me and my husband were constantly being bumped into by the servers - which meant after a while we had to keep scooting in and then back out once the server walked away. Ugh. No papaddums at the table either- everyone else around us got them.. Won't come back for a while- might as well try a regular South Indian restaurant where the food is better for half the price and I go in expecting bad service - at least I won't be disappointed. "
