DOSA on FillmoreYummy! My sister and I had been wanting to try something new for a while but she is gluten and dairy free so sometimes it is difficult, especially at restaurants where we are unfamiliar with the food. Not at DOSA! Our waiter brought over a special menu, recommended items she could have - told us about each dish and how much we should order, etc. He was amazing and so was the food! Omg and the cocktails!! Delicious!!!6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMDOSA, a spectacular first experiencWent with a friend from India, as she gave it great reviews. She navigated me through the menu and pointed out the authentic, but rare, plates and several fusion options. All was excellent, drop appetizer to desert. I would definitely go again.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Evening! We went to celebrate a dear friend's birthday, she has a gluten issue, but was able to eat almost 90% of what's on the menu. Not an easy task to please all eight women who attended the celebration! Great cocktails and delicious foods. Will definitely come back again.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, cramped seatingOur dining experience at Dosa was very good. Everything we ordered was outstanding, and the service was excellent. The only detractor was the seating - we were almost on top of two other couples in a row of seats that reminded us bistros in Paris. I was farther away from my wife sitting at the same table than I was to my "neighbors", making It awkward for the servers to perform their job, and hard to have a conversation with my wife.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGood "fancy" Indian spotI would not classify most Indian restaurants as "fancy" but DOSA on Fillmore is. We went during Dine About Town and they let one of us order off the pre-fixed menu and add an additional entree from the regular menu. The waitstaff warned that the duck vindaloo is their spiciest dish, but I thought the chicken and eggplant dish we ordered was spicier. The spice levels are perfect - makes you sweat a little, but doesn't make it unbearable to eat, and you can still taste the flavors. Only complaint is they forgot to give us our bread we ordered, however we were not charged for it when the bill showed up. Good food, nice waitstaff, good atmosphere. Also, I recommend you make a reservation for this place!!6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMFlavourA stunning combination of flavours, including the cocktails, your palette will not be disappointed. A little loud early but calmed down at about 9 pm and was perfect.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Indian food in the Bay AreaThe best by far. The favors linger in your mouth like fine wine. The most knowledgable wait staff on a consistent basis. Where do they find this dedication. A temple of Fine Dining.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMAuthentic South Indian and MOREGreat restaurant, great concept, excellent execution. There's a reason this restaurant has a wait for reservations! The South Indian food is as authentic or fusion as you would like, they have everything from chole batura to rava masala dosas, which are all incredible, but some of the more fusion elements are great too. Try the basil dosa, its like a dosa with pesto!5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Indian food in SFGreat food (on par with London and Vancouver) along with pleasant service. Well worth the cab ride to Pacific Heights as SF downtown Indian restaurants tend to be more tourist oriented and close earlier.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat service, food, and cocktails! The food was really great, but what truly impressed me were the cocktails. Give them a try when you are there. We ended up getting one tasting menu and a Chennai Chicken dish and sharing everything and that was just about right in terms of food. But definitely get a few of their cocktails and share, it's worth trying them.
A little on the pricey side, but it would have been much cheaper without the drinks. It's a very nice spot for a date. =)5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceHad dinner here for the first time on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. We were greeted warmly, sat promptly but did not see our server for a bit. However, once he greeted us he was absolutely excellent. Recommended some wonderful dishes and gave honest recommendations. Food was amazing and always brought out hot and well presented. All four of us had the seasonal tasting menu. Overall a great experience.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMElegant Indian diningWe had been to their other restaurant and this one is larger and more well appointed. Service was attentive and informed. Food was excellent. We had the north and south samosas, lamb curry, the classic does, some rice and raita, plus two golden poori.
Everything was cooked and spiced to our taste. Finished with the large French Press coffee. Great place to di e after a movie at the Kabuki.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMMovie and a DinnerSundance Kabuki (with reserved seat for a new movie) followed by a great dinner at Dosa. What more do you need?
Went for the tasting menu with samosas, paneer dosa, and mango prawns. Everything was very good...especially the samosas.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDisappointed at the begining.Initial wait time 45 min. After 20 min we were offered place at the communal table which we did not take and were looking for a seperate table. Then she said 45 min wait time again. I asked but still we are next in wait. A guy thr replied absolutely.
After around 40 min everyone who came after us were getting table when we asked what about us, she said they have reservations and your wait time is 45 min again. I asked how many ppl are ahead of us , she said there are 300 ppl with resetvations.
I went back and placed a resrrvation from my phone and got table .
If you are that busu ppl tell us resetvation is mandatory at this time.
Atleast our time is also as valuable as yours.
**** but still I accept great food and rest of service.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dinner and would go back!Had a great dinner. Loved the chicken eggplant dish and the fries. Dosas are a must!5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for dinner+movieExcellent vegan options in this great Indian restaurant. Perfect for catching a movie afterward as Kabuki is just across the street. Service flawless as usual.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMHave always enjoyed theirHave always enjoyed their food in the mission. This branch is bigger, and more accessible with a garage next door. A must try for fans of this food.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat spot for a date!My husband and I went out for a date to celebrate his birthday. We ended up sitting at the bar and the bartender gave us great recommendations and service. I would definitely recommend this for any special occasions, you are never rushed out. Love Dosa!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMCame for Mother's Day lunchThis was our first time dining @ Dosa. We had the 3 course price fixed lunch. There were many dishes to choose from. Our server was very helpful in describing the various dishes and all were great, except for a mixed vegetable entree that had very undercooked asparagus & very al dente potatoes in it. Not my favorite, but everything else was quite good. Will definitely return...5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome restaurant. We r happyAwesome restaurant. We r happy to come again.......!!!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMLove the foodGreat food, perfect sized portions and energetic ambience5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was our first time dinningThis was our first time dinning at DOSA and we were blown away. Jenny5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways Good!Dosa never disappoints. The food is consistently delicious. The prices are reasonable and the portions are ample. It is always a treat to go there.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth the hypeLoved the dosa, and the fact that the small plates weren't that small! Loud enough to feel energetic, but still completely easy to talk to one another.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMoutstanding southern Indianoutstanding southern Indian cuisine in an upscale decor. It was a pleasant suprise to find such a wonderful restaurant on the advice of a taxi driver.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my second dinnerThis was my second dinner at Dosa and it was a excellent as my first meal! My friends and I shared a variety of small plates, each was vibrant with spices . I love the dosa crepes but decided this time to try the Uttadam with the roasted wild mushrooms. It was just delicious! Lots of mixed mushrooms, the the uttadam crepe was a perfect platform to show off the mushrooms. I detected a bit of truffle oil which binder the mushroom flavors. My friends had the tasting menu and enjoyed every dish!
The bar's offerings are always a revelation. I had one of the best gin and tonics made from Blade Gin.
I will return for another meal.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMHave been here many timesHave been here many times and would return. Good food and it is fun eating a Dosa with all the different sauces4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my first time diningThis was my first time dining and been wanting too. Had anniversary dinner and girlfriend loved it. The waiter was very helpful and suggested two great cocktails that went well with the food. I did not care too much for the "sauces" or the pickled veggies and thought it was a little strong for my taste but girlfriend loved it. Evewrything else from the fish entree, the dosa and especially the veggie sliders was amazing.
Definitely will be back4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMwe had a group of eight. thewe had a group of eight. the food was outstanding and the service excellent! our group was international with some people from france, lebanon and use: all loved the meal and ambiance. the owner made several suggestions and was especially attentive. we will definitely go back when we are in san francisco again!4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMI've been to Dosa multipleI've been to Dosa multiple times and every occasion has been excellent.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMReally GoodVery good food if you like Indian Cuisine. First time there and it was really good. Had the Vegetarian Curry and was outstanding.
Apps were outstanding as well.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMI love this place and wouldI love this place and would recommend it to anyone who is not strictly a meat-and-potatoes type.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMThe staff was helpful andThe staff was helpful and knowledgeable, and the experience was positive. Great location for the Fillmore!4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMAn extensive menu made accessibleAn extensive menu made accessible by the informative guidance of the waitperson, led to a delightful dining experience. There's a casual, simple elegance to this food. And judicious application of the chutneys and sauces can service palates of varied discernment, from the sensitive to the asbestos-lined. Portions are as generous as you create. The service is excellent. One of my favorite places to exercise my appetite.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat time at DOSAGreat time! I didn't quite take advantage, but the liquor selection at the bar is impressive. The Plymouth mixed drink I had from the menu was delicious as well.
Highly recommend the veggie sliders, but just ask your server, ours had great recommendations.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding Service, Delicious DosaDOSA on Fillmore is a regular stop for my wife and me when visiting Japantown. The service at DOSA is outstanding, which is great, because maybe you need a little guidance with the menu, and also a little guidance on just how it is you eat those delicious items (dosas, particularly) spilling over the edges of your plate.
If you stick to the dosa / uttapam side of the menu you will find the check, when it comes, is quite reasonable, considering just how good your dosa or uttapam was. And don't forget to order some paratha - always a treat.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMEast Indian food that is refined.East Indian food that is refined. The truffled dosa was crispy & delighfully tasty. This is a different kind of East Indian food. I usually have a glass of wine from India which is quite nice. The staff is always friendly.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty & great for food restrictionsThis was my third time back to Dosa in as many years, and I really enjoyed it. I always go for what is new and in season, but incorporate one dosa and one uttapam whenever I dine. They offered a wide array of choices (vegetarian/vegan/GF) which was of particular note for us. Excellent choices from appetizers through dessert, curry through sides, and many lovely drinks too. I'll be back!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMA Must Visit in San FranciscoI love to come back here time and again. I've only visited the one on Filmore and it was probably my 5th-6th visit. As usual, everything was exceptional. My previous visit was a bit disappointing with the orders being messed up. But that wouldn't deter me from visiting again. Coming from Bangalore, a city in India that delivers the best dosas in the world, this is the best and closest to home that I can find in the bay area. You don't have to wait too much as long as you have made a reservation in advance and the whole group shows up on time. Service is extremely friendly, quick. Definitely a must visit for those who crave Dosas and the ones who want to try it.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMInsults from open table and restaurI will never go here again. I will never use Open table again. You reminded me of the date twice and then the restaurant called me. I do not make reservations that I do not intend to keep. I do not like to be called. Therefore I will never go there or use open table again. I do not like to be insulted. Too noisy....3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMthe best South Indian foodthe best South Indian food inthe city, excelelnt each and every time we dine.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMenjoyed the 3 course offering.enjoyed the 3 course offering. second course included dosas, and my green papaya choice was excellent - the dipping sauces were fantastic. definitely will go back with friends.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a great place if youThis is a great place if you are dining with a vegetarian friend as I was. They food is delicious and there is a balance of heat for those of us that can't do really spicy.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were at DOSA on a MondayWe were at DOSA on a Monday evening, bringing with us two friends for their first visit to DOSA. After having read some of the most recent reviews on Open Table, we grew concerned, wondering if something had changed at Dosa that was going to spoil our - and our friends' experience. Nope - eveything was just as wonderful as we had experienced in our last two visits - great food, great service and yet another lovely evening at DOSA. And for a Monday, it was bustling - not your typical Friday night crowd, mind you, but bustling. We drive from the San Ramon Valley to eat at DOSA and will continue to do so!3/18/2013 12:00:00 AMBest waitress in SF works here! The food was amazing but being new to the place we were not entirely sure what everything was. The waitress noticed this and she gave the best tips/advise/suggestions you could ask for. That woman was an amazing waitress. Food was great, spicy but oh-so-nice! Will definitely go again!3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was amazing! Great toFood was amazing! Great to take family, someone special or get take out. Everything was perfect and delicious! They have a special vegan menu too which I highly value.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMCilantro Fish!Recommended: bean sprout salad, lamb curry, and cilantro fish(!!).1/5/2013 12:00:00 AMexcellent south indian cuisineI've been going to Dosa now for several years. The menu is dynamic, with consistently excellent, authentic southern Indian fare. The dishes are inventive and expertly seasoned. While personally I'm not a huge fan of dosas themselves, I strongly recommend sampling an array of small plates - you can't go wrong. Also the Uttapams are good. The seating downstairs can leave one feeling a little packed in with ones neighbors, so when possible I recommend the upstairs seating - which is also better for conversation.10/6/2012 12:00:00 AM
