We've been 2 Dosa before (live in the East Bay). We chose Dosa this time because we had friends attending a conf. in the City and they r vegetarian. Dosa (or another Indian rest.) is about the best option 4 vegetarians who are serious about food. Friends were not disappointed but I also don't think they were overwhelmed (quite familiar with Indian food, even South Indian). The noise level (OpenTable doesn't have a category for this) was beyond the Chron's bomb level. Interestingly we were seated upstairs which helped in the noise category but between the couple of times that we've been here, I don't think we'll be back soon though I do love (and know) South Indian food. Waiter was excellent. Food was not spectacular but very acceptable.

The food was a unique mix of both authentic and innovative Indian cuisine. We had the classic masala dosa (which frankly would hold its own in most restaurants in South India), the dahi vada and the idiappam(which was good, but very different from the version that I grew up with). The serving was staff was great and we almost never had to wait for someone to attend to us, even during the busy night. The only reason I haven't given a 5-star rating is the dessert menu didn't look as inviting as the rest of the menu. Still a great place to go for both families and young couples.

Dining at Dosa was a pleasure, my love and I enjoy the intimacy that food brings, what better way then a romantic dinner of innovative, beautifully constructed South Indian dishes. I love the amount of heat and Vegetarian options made out dining out a night to remember, Adrian was a delightful server and always brought a smile to our table.

Food is beyond beyond. :-) Our server could not have been better. That's why its our 8th visit! On a Sat night however... when this busy, tables are too close - servers bottoms were in our faces as they bent to be heard/hear adjacent patrons questions; no space to stand comfortably since we had to wait 30 mins despite having a rezee. Bar service was slow and disinterested in those of us who wanted to order a drink during the long wait. I know you're busy but hey, I'm waiting to spend my money. Love Dosa and will always come back but perhaps, not on Sat night! :-)

We had been wanting to dine at Dosa for many years and finally had the opportunity last Saturday. We had a tight schedule, but told the server and were prepared to order immediately. We ordered the prix fixe, with 3 courses and still they managed to get us out of there on time, 40 mintues after seating! The ambiance is bustling, but relaxing once you sit down and the food was delicious!

We sat upstairs and had a wonderful server, knowledgeable about the wine list and dishes. We didn't want to order the whole chutney sampler, so she offered up a mint chutney to go with the pappadum. We enjoyed the spicy lamb kebab; the complex textures of the watermelon, mung, paneer salad; the fabulous creamy corn soup; and the perfectly comforting sweet potato dosa. Easy to choose a delicious combination of dishes for a well-balanced dinner. Beautiful, unhurried experience in a lovely environment. Around us were families, couples out on a Friday night, and many South Asian people, which speaks to how Dosa's take on traditional dishes also stays true to Indian roots. Reservations!

I love to come here for birthdays and other special events and I also love bringing visitors from outside the Bay Area here. The food in interesting, always fresh, authentic and DELICIOUS. I alos love that I can eat very modestly with just a dosa or uttapam or be fairly extravagant! This visit, we all had the fixed menu, which was both amazing and a HUGE amount of food! But we ate every bite.

We've been to Dosa on Fillmore quite a few times in the past and have always liked the food. However during our recent visit, we felt that the quality of food has deteriorated. The flavors were less authentic and the service was sluggish. Inspite of ordering from the tasting menu, the items were served staggered. Also the reservation didn't seem to help much as it took around 30 minutes to get to our table, while others without reservation waited for almost the same time.

We started with some cocktails and though pricey, they were yummy. For dinner we each ordered a paper masala dosa and thank goodness the waiter stopped and warned us of how large these were (it had been two years since my last visit to SF). We shared one and it was very romantic and we were seated on the top level with a view of the bar and main level of the restaurant and it was very pretty with its warm dim lighting. We also shared some prawn curry with coconut rice and rasmalai for dessert with chai..... YUM!

Tried some different dishes this time since I went with an Indian friend as well as another vegetarian friend. The kale pakoras were very different than the usual pakoras, very light batter (more like tempura) - delicious! I always enjoy eating at Dosa because of the variety of their menu with items not found at other Indian restaurants in the Bay Area.

Tried this place for my daughters birthday. The menu was very diverse, and what I really liked, was very informative. Since we are not too familiar with Indian food, it was nice to be able to read the menu and it explained what each dish was. We all ordered from the summer sampler-was able to try a little from this category and that category. The food was "hot" but not so much as to mask the flavors. We all had plenty to eat and left with full, satisfied bellies.

We went to Dosa with another couple of friends on a Saturday night. The food was great. The waitress apparently offered one of our orders to the next table. Ok that happens. The next glasses of wine took time to arrive but not a major hurdle. My friend and I split the check. I saw that my friend put a $48 tip on his $140 check. He had followed the recommendations from his check. The recommendations for tip were for the whole bill. The waitress said this was a "glitch in the system". How can a modern system like that write on the same small piece of paper: your total is $140 and an 18% tip is $48?? I can't help but see foul play. I discourage people to go to a dishonest establishment but in all fairness the food and the place are great.

I've been to both the Mission location as well as this location in the Fillmore. Both have delicious food, and I would recommend both for lunch or dinner. The Fillmore location is across the street from the Kabuki movie theater, so it's a nice date or night for dinner and a movie. Personal favorites: - Chennai Chicken - Samosas 'North and South' - Tamil Lamb - South Indian Moons Uttapam As far as drinks, the wine selection is very good (better at the bottle level than by the glass) and they have a full cocktail list. Great space (big and a bit cavernous noise-wise which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for). Good, lively spot when you find yourself in the neighborhood.

don't need the same much more then that. When I was giving a keynote address in an industrial section of India, two executives and their wives walked up to me and explained that they used to live in the Bay Area and that they have really missed eating at Dosa. I had been living near the other location in the mission and have never tried it until I received the recommendation. Since then, have gone back many times. Also, excellent cocktails.

I came here at long last with a party of 6 and ordered several dishes to share. The dosas did not disappoint! In particular, the rich sambar served on the side reminded me of being back in Bangalore, as did the authentic chutneys. I also really liked the Chennai Chicken. Dosa is a family favorite which never ceases to amaze friends we bring there for the first time. The fresh, vibrant flavors, based on locally sourced ingredients, the imaginative preparations and lovely service, all make Dosa Fillmore worth a trip. The prices are high for Indian food, and for a couple of dishes unreasonably so, but the quality generally justifies the expense.

We love the food and the setting. All the staff, save our waitress, were engaging, competent, and more than welcoming. Our waitress was a wet, drippy dishrag of lethargy, disinterest, and inattentiveness. She cast a gloom over the entire meal. When we commented on the amount of cartilage found in our duck appetizer, she reached onto the table to yank the plate away--no explanation about why there would be that amount of cartilage, no apology. I asked her to please let the kitchen know about the cartilage, but I don't believe she could have been bothered to convey that information. Will we go back? Absolutely. Will we ever be seated at her station again? NEVER!!!!!!!!

The food at Dosa is always wonderful. Because we went in early and emphasized the hard of hearing 50% of our party of 4, they seated us, as we had requested, in a corner, which was adequate as far as noise was concerned. Generaly, it's a very noisy place, but the food is unbeatable. We all had the summer tasting menu - way too much food. Took home last untouched course and enjoyed a good dinner next night.

Had forgotten how good the food was at Dosa's. The special goat chops cooked the way they usually cooked lamb chops was outstanding. We had the white truffle dosa, masala potato dosa, lentil fritters with yoghurt, pulled duck and two types of bread. All were excellent. It is a very noisy restaurant which also decreases my ratings because I don't like have to yell over the ambient noise to hear your dining companions. The waiter was very good, suggested some pacing re the breads, recommendations. Food was presented efficiently, dirty plates and flatware replaced appropriately. Going back next week!

I'm usually very generous with my ratings and reviews but Dosa just disappoints. If you are looking for a fun evening out and don't care about the food or price, Dosa can pass as a hip place with nice ambience & creative food. But if you are looking for Indian food with any authentic taste or a decent service (without arrogance or courtesy) or care about value for money even when eating expensive food, then skip Dosa. There are tons of better alternatives in SF. We ordered the dosas, idli & sambar, dahi vada etc. which is usually pretty hard to screw up. The dosa would get 3/5 rating and the sambar + chutneys will get 1/5. The entree sizes are decent but appetizer portions are quite sad. I wouldn't be going back there again.
