A word from Dos Perros
We're unlike anything else in the Triangle.
Dos Perros offers fresh and truly authentic Mexican cuisine, an extensive beer list, and carefully chosen wines. Our house-made aguas frescas (horchata, hibiscus, and more) are delicious by themselves or in several of our innovative cocktails. And we serve it all in a warm but upscale environment.
And for groups of up to 50, we offer a warm, cozy, downstairs private dining room, perfect for private parties. Our 60" high-definition flat screen adds to the possibilities; think business meetings or presentations, movie night, or that big game.
Ideally located, we are downtown, just a couple-minute walk from the Durham Performing Arts Center, making us a popular pre- or post-performance restaurant destination.

1st time eating outside at Dos Perros where the setting is very appealing, cozy. It was a great evening. Service was attentive & accommodating, but not overbearing. Food has been excellent all 3 times we've been there. Be aware that Dos Perros is always energetic, lively, & loud. A real "feel good" place-- unless you're looking for peace & quiet.

When I asked the locals about a good Mexican place, they said go here. Portion sizes were disappointingly small, average in flavor, and above average in price. Service was okay, as was the atmosphere. Simply not impressed enough to return and spend my money here. Appears to be a good place to grab a drink and an app, then move onto another place.

My wife and I have had dinner here twice in the past month, both on Friday nights, both with little advance planning. At 2 or 3, one of us will text the other. "Dinner?" "Sure! Where?" "2 dogs?" "YES! I'll make the reservations." And, with a quick trip to Open Table, our evening plans are securely underway. The food here is great (though the tastes vary between entrees!) Spices are just right - fresh, never overpowering. Service is just right. About the time I'd think "I need more water" the glass would be filled. We'd start to get tired of the chips and guac, and the entrees would arrive. While it's not the tour de force that some places in this foodie town are, it's quietly consistent at providing better than average food every time.

The food is very good and often new items are introduced on the menu. My wife wanted a dish that included green vegetables, however, there was only one entree that included a green vegetable. She ordered the chicken dish, which would not have been her first choice, because it was the only entree to include a vegetable.

One outstanding dinner and four times slightly-above-average. Unfortunately, last week's dinner was disappointing, again. I ordered the Stuffed Trout, which arrived with little attention to plating. The fish was covered with so much sauce that you could not even tell what it was. The crab stuffing was almost indistinguishable from the fish, which was slightly overcooked. The "crispy skin"? Not crispy. The accompanying veg consisted of huge, bland pieces of red pepper and eggplant. Hardly a spice or interesting seasoning to be had, which is shocking in a Mexican restaurant. The evening was saved by the nicely spicy habanero margarita and the excellent service. May try again; always after the holy grail of that one great meal.

Dos Perros features exceptional Mexican cuisine in the true culinary fashion and style, and is distinctive, unique, and with considerable flair. From their signature margaritas, which are exquisite, to their steady and changing menu, and specials, they are a landmark downtown Durham dinner opportunity. We plan to return regularly and as frequently as we can! And their lower level room is an exceptional space to hold dinner meetings with larger groups or for special occasions.

I did not find any filling in the tacos. The grouper in the taco was cut into small pieces and fried. They were so small you really couldn't tell if it was grouper, most fish tacos use a fillet. The shrimp in the tacos were few as well. I ordered the tres leche cake which was very old. It must have been made earlier in the week. The cake was crumbly and stale with the milk/cream on it. I have had the homemade and restaurant made many times in California and this was not even close. The service was good as well as the prices. I would rather pay more and get better quality.

We brought two friends with us after having had two nice evenings previously. This time, the service was REALLY slow, the food poorly cooked (overdone crab cakes, bad chicken soup with gristle, very small main course portion for $19.00, etc) Very disappointing. Embarrassing after all the anticipation. New chef, off night, not sure. But won't go again any time soon.

Arrived for our reservation at 6:30 and was promptly seated outdoors as requested. Beautiful evening and good cocktails. By 7:00 the place was packed and with good reason. My wife had the trout and I had the duck enchiladas. Both dishes were wonderful. Complimented the dinner with a couple of really tasty margaritas, leaving no room for dessert. Waitstaff and hostesses were all very attentive and friendly.

Delicious, creative take on south-of-the-border food with local produce. Good drinks, friendly and efficient staff, reasonable prices. Casual atmosphere. Overall a very worthwhile addition to the foodie heaven that is Durham. I ordered an appetizer which, after some delay, the waiter confessed they couldn't deliver -- some mixup in the kitchen that I never understood. The chef sent me, with apologies, another appetizer that was better than the one I'd ordered. Compliments of the kitchen. Nice.

Dos Perros has good food anytime, but Taco Night (Sun. and Mon.) is fun, inexpensive and yummy. Add a $5 classic margarita and you are set. My favorites are the shrimp, and fish tacos. My friend from Denver, said her favorite was the mixed veggies and she "would eat tacos every night if she could get tacos this good." Want more than tacos? Burritos and platters are also offered.

I'm a fan of real Mexican style cooking & when I heard Dos Perros took on a new chef, I figured it was time to give them a good look. I made a reservation through open table & went with my family (2 adults & 2 kids under 12). We arrived a few minutes early and were promptly seated at our table which was in the courtyard outside, which is a cozy little patio area for great outdoor dining. Chef Paul came out & said hello so I took the opportunity to ask him to make for us for whatever he was his favorites to make- wow did he not disappoint! We had a great sampling of everything from apps to desserts & the 'ritas were among the best I've had in some time. Had a great time to go along with a great meal!

Second time at Dos Perros, 1st time for lunch. The food here is slightly upscale Mexican that aspires to be known as cuisine. Watered down and less tasty version of standard fare. Interesting bar with tasty drinks using house-made mixers and juices. The service is consistently inconsistent. Sometimes doting and overattentive, then suddenly too bust to check in, inattentive to things like empty glasses. Like most of Durham, simply not professional service at all. My advice, seek out one of the amazing real mexican restaurants in town, the drink won't be as interesting, and the napkins will be paper, but the food will be much better, the price much less, and you will feel like they actually value your business.

We've been to Dos Perros a few times, but the previous two were on the disappointing side. This time, dinner for six on a Thursday night was excellent. It's very casual, but fun. All of the mains we tried were excellent. None are huge - you'll probably want at least two courses - and don't expect a taco, tamale, and enchilada combo plate - this isn't that sort of Mexican restaurant. I had Chile en Nogada - a picadillo stuffed poblano chile. Excellent. And their Mexican chocolate ice cream - really excellent! We'll be back. Either we had bad nights before, or they've improved, but this was a great meal.
