Diner Reviews
  • "We walked by early in the afternoon, peeked in the restaurant and was greeted by Ellen a bartender. We had a great talk and decided to make our reservations on Open Table for 11:00pm, because of Ellen. We arrived and were again greeted by a friendly staff member. The place was winding down for the evening but could not be more attentive. We had three Salmon entree's and one Lobster Ravioli all were wonderfully cooked and presented. We also had cocktails and beer. Pricing was very reasonable. We will go back. Ellen thank you for a great recommendation."

  • "What a disappointment. From the Open Table description I was expecting Ellen's Stardust Diner with sophisticated food. Not only was there no singing but the food was horrible. My husband's fish and my daughter's scampi were like rubber. I will not tell mama."

  • "Great food & service followed by a fun time in the piano bar!"

  • "The ambiance was nice but we were told when the waiter first arrived that they didnt have the pizza and also had no other bread since their bread delivery did not arrive that day. "

  • "We were there for an early dinner before a 7:00 show in their adjacent lounge. Only one other table was occupied, so it was very quiet and service on the ball. Food was tasty, nothing out of this world. Prices typical of NYC. Excellent location near Broadway theaters."

  • "we went early last Sunday after a matinee. The restaurant was very quiet with not much activity. There was a new waitress but we couldn't even tell she was new until she told us at the end of the meal. My chicken was okay. My son's short ribs were delicious and my husband's salmon was very good. Did not have dessert. Drinks were tasty, beer was cold."

  • "My thanks for a great experience on Saturday with our bus full of 37 people. Everyone has continued to give high praise for the meals, especially the sea bass. Our wait staff was terrific and we thank you! Eileen K"

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant & I really enjoyed it. I will return & the next time, I want to go into their bar area after eating so I can hear the music & singers who our waiter told me were aspiring Broadway actors. My food was great & so was my dessert which was tiramisu."

  • "I treated a guest for his 50th birthday to this restaurant. He could not be more satisfied with his meal and the most gracious service. We both absolutely loved the Salmon. The Chef managed to make the Salmon skin nice and crunchy while allowing the inside to be nice and tender. In a word, "De-Lish!!" We will certainly dine there again."

  • "This is on Restaurant Row, so there are too many excellent dining options for this place to get my dime again any time soon...unless I'm coming for the cabaret. My appetizer of roasted tomato on crostini was pretty wimpy, with no zingy brightness. The bread that was hard to crack into. Talapia was bland bland bland. I feel bad a poor little fishy died for this meal. The price for a pre-theater 3-course meal was very good, if you don't mind the food."

  • "We had a pre-theater dinner for a 7pm curtain. We arrived at 5pm and finished in plenty of time to walk around before the show. Food was outstanding (duck and lamb chops) and the service was great. The restaurant was small, very intimate and quiet enough to talk across the table in a normal voice. (About half the tables were taken by the time we left, but it was still quiet enough to speak at normal tones.) Will definitely go back and would recommend to everyone. Menu was extensive enough to have something for everyone."

  • "Our first time to Don't Tell Mama NYC was a real blast! Our server Roberto was very nice and helpful, despite being very busy with a full restaurant. The feta bruschetta appetizer was delicious. The shrimp scampi entree was good; had a few issues with our steak but it was handled quickly and resolved. Whatever you decide to do though, you must see the Judy & Liza show; it was so much fun! Next time we visit, we will definitely be seeing the show again, or at least one of their other shows! Thanks we had a great visit!"

  • "Waitress at the front desk gave a terrible attitude. She gave no smile at all and even pushed my shoulder with her finger when she was telling me to wait to be seated. I wasn't intended to walk inside of the dining room without her guidance anyway, so her gesture was totally unnecessary. That was really rude."

  • "How one waiter is able to handle the Saturday pre theater crowd is amazing. The service and food are outstanding and the price is reasonable for New York City. The pre fixe lunch is worth it. We have been there twice and are planning to go back again."

  • "Had tickets for a show on a Thursday night and wanted to go out for dinner beforehand. Great little restaurant on Restaurant Row. We had crab cake appetizer, market salad, crispy skin salmon, butternut squash ravioli, and lemon meringue pie. Service was great and the food was fresh and delicious other than appetizer. We felt they could have used a bit more flavor. We would definitely not hesitate to go back or recommend to friends."

  • "We ended up in Don't Tell Mama because it was near our hotel on a horribly cold And windy Sunday night. Inside, it was warm and filled with people having a great time. My sister and I had a blast!"

  • "We found this on Open Table before we went to NYC; and were very happy with our choice! The restaurant is close to the Minskoff Theater...it was intimate and charming! The staff was friendly and knowledgable about the menu. Great recommendations! I had the fresh Lobster and Shrimp ravioli! A nice light dinner choice. My sister-in-law had the 'melt in your mouth' short ribs! Absolutely would recommend to anyone!!"

  • "We had seven in our party -- three teens and 4 adults. We really had a great time. The wait staff was just the right mix of attentive, but left us along. Affordable by NY standards. Affordable drinks. Very good food -- though it didn't stop the conversation. Exactly what we needed!"

  • "This place was amazingly not busy on a Saturday night with an 8:00pm reservation on St. Patty's Day weekend (understandably it is not an Irish pub), so dining was very enjoyable. Seems the place comes alive later at night. Was looking forward to seeing the show scheduled, but with so much good food, we left before the show started. Highly recommended ... not just for the cabaret, but for the food as well!!"

  • "Since the moment we arrived the staff greeted us and made us feel welcomed, the hostess led us to our table next to their beautiful brick wall *personally I love the look of it in a restaurant". Once our server approached us and took our drink order he began to accommodate our needs by recommending some dishes of their menu.our drinks arrived and both delicious deffinately will come back for another "sexy mama". We took the servers advice and ordered their seafood pasta with a lobster tail and chicken Marsala which both entrees came out and were delicious. Next time I will take advantage of their piano bar next door I snuck in for a minute and their staff playing the piano was amazing."

  • "Convenient for theater goers? Yes. Nice servers? Yes. But the menu is limited, the food is just ok, the ambience is a bit weird with just a few tables and a large area in the back for piano bar / groups. I can't really recommend it."

  • "Dinner at Don't tell mama's was very good and reasonably priced . The staff was very good as well. There was nine of us and everyone enjoyed their dinner. Would suggest reservations because it is very small, we made them and had a very nice table. We went to the piano bar after dinner and had a great time, all the bar staff and waiters/ waitresses got up and sang and were all very talented! Great night out!!"

  • "This restaurant is a gem located in the theater district of New York City. We has the Saturday pre fix lunch and it was superb. We can't wait to go back there again. Everything from the pipe in music to the food was outstanding. There was only one waiter and he did an excellent job getting to each table."

  • "We made reservations for 3 for pre theater at 6:30 and arrived a little early. They said there would be a short wait...no problem. The table we were offered in the lounge room consisted of 3 24" bar tables put together..unacceptable, so we waited for our 6:30 table. We were then told that while they take open table reservations, they do not hold tables for those clients. We had an 8 PM curtain so we were concerned.Iit was suggested we eat at the bar. 3 people- difficult for converstion- again unacceptable. Ordered apps at 6:45. Got table at 7. Appetizers came out at 7:10 and our entrees, which were ravioli, chicken breast and seafood pasta, didnt come until 7:25. Needless to say we ate very quickly in order to get to the theater in time."

  • "We were counting on a lively atmosphere! My daughter wanted singing waiters which is what the website led us to believe we would get. Boring, quiet ambiance and uninterested servers. We left starving and broke!! Totally overpriced, food bland and TINY portions. :("

  • "Had a wonderful experience. Our waiter, Max, was extremely informative and very persomable. Loved the ambiance of the dining area. Food was incredible. Went with the prix fix menu and was not disappointed. Have already recommended to friends."

  • "My friend and I had the 3 course pre-fix lunch. It was the perfect amount of food tomatoes are out if season so they were hard but everything else was great. $12 unlimited bellini drinks were amazing! Loved it for lunch, will try again for lunch and piano lounge!"

  • "Loved it! The cozy atmosphere, location on Restaurant Row, moderate prices and a price fixed menu for lunch or dinner, this little gem has it all. The food was great too! Went for pre-theatre on a Saturday night with a 5:30 reservation and happy to say we were not rushed at all...nice leisurely 2 hour plus dinner with great service. Very enjoyable. They also have a piano bar in the adjoining room."

  • "Tried for the first time and found this little gem Food was very good. Service excellent. Would definitely go back again. Only complaint is the tables for two were so small that it was a little difficult to share our plates."

  • "We wanted a restaurant in walking distance from our hotel to the restaurant and to the Nederlander theatre. I researched theatre district restaurants participating in Restaurant Week. I found Don't Tell Mama and saw that it was worth 1000pts. I made a 5:00pm reservation for 6 people. I called the restaurant to confirm and ask a few questions. I asked to be seated at a nice table. Christy said she would place us at the back table for 6 as she thought that was the best table. When we arrived (no other party was there) she directed us to a table crammed between the front door and the door to the kitchen.f Needless to say both doors were in use constantly. We were told that the GM changed us due to some VIP's he wanted to seat there."
