Diner Reviews
  • "We walked in and the ambiance was awesome. Dark wood walls, white linen table clothes and soft candle light at the table equals perfect. Our serving team was very help and very enthusiastic about our dinning experience. The entree was good but we have it lacked that over the top taste that one would expect from a higher end restaurant. The dessert however was very good and enough for two to share romantically. Overall it was good meal but a bit price for a good meal. I would recommend this to a friend if they are looking for a pricey meal with great ambiance and very good service."

  • "The filet and blue cheese medallions were very good, and the value was great. Came with a salad, or soup, potato, and cheesecake. So much I had to take the desert home"

  • "Always top of the list for wonderful dinning. Quality food and very, very knowledgeable servers.Makes everyone feel at home."

  • "I would eat here a lot more often if it wasn't so expensive. I had a Living Social Coupon so we went there for dinner. The food is excellent; so is the service. But way over priced. Eddie V's in Scottsdale is a good alternative."

  • "Donovan's attempts to be an upscale fine-dining restaurant, but surely misses its mark with the food. The prices are not reflective of the food quality. The Caesar salad was drenched in dressing and the ribeye was smothered in demi glace. Overall the food was bland with little flavor. The crab legs were full of water and tasted as though they had been frozen. The potatoes au gratin were limp and ineffective. Spent $140.00 on dinner for 2 without alcohol. Very disappointed and will not be going back. On the positive side, the wait staff was extremely attentive."

  • "We always have a great experience at Donovan's! Best steak in the state!"

  • "The good and bad is that nothing changes here. It's a very traditional menu that might have been developed 30 years ago. Great steaks. The desserts were uninspired. Boring."

  • "Don't like places that only have Valet Parking. All items were way overpriced. Was hoping to get Prime Rib. Not on the menue. Went there to impress and i had a Groupon Coupon. My guest was impressed but I wasn't as I I was picking up the tab. Even with a Groupon that gave me a $40.00 discount it was too expensive"

  • "We traveled to Scottsdale for vacation and invited some family out for dinner. I had read multiple reviews from locals recommending Donovan's as the best steak in Phoenix. Being from southern California I have eaten at the Donovan's in San Diego area and had always be impressed with food and service. Phoenix was no different. everything was outstanding. I like my steak rare to medium rare, some of our family like theirs well done. everything was as ordered and even the well done was moist and not over charred. I have had some great dinners at Durant's over the years and it was my "go to" place for steak in Phoenix. Now I have another."

  • "Service, food, beverage selection is all very good. perfect for business meetings and wine selection. one of the best in area."

  • "This is a great restaurant if you love steaks. There are other choices on the menu but the main reason to go is for red meat with red wine and an excellent cocktail to start. I have been to several steak places in town and think these steaks are the best though there are other good places. The wine list has some great choices though we didn't go to the high end. Service was professional and efficient. Quality comes with a price. This is an expensive restaurant but I think it is worth it for special occasions."

  • "We had oyster Rockefeller, filet mignon, NY steak and sea bass, and we shared everything so I got a taste of them all. The steaks were done just as we have ordered, medium rare. They were very tender and juicy and seasoned just right. I like that I did not taste any butter in the meat. The skillet fried potatoes with peppercorn sauce went very well with the filet. It also comes with sweet peapods carrots and like the steak, they were done and seasoned just right. Same with the au gratin that came with the NY steak. The sea bass tasted very fresh and the skin was crispy like crackers. I am very particular about food that are made too rich even if they tasted very good. I did not find that at Donovan's."

  • "We have been going here for 20+ years, Best Splurge restaurant for steaks, lobster and Seafood Tower. The Caesar Salad I over the top, ask for Anchovies!! Love the décor, Phoenix hidden secret. Used a Living Social $80 coupon. . . it helped!!"

  • "Four of us celebrated Father's Day at Donovan's. It was the first time at the restaurant for each of us. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server was quick to the table to take drink orders and list the specials. Our order was taken soon after and we settled in for an enjoyable evening. Drinks were very well prepared and the wine selection was good. Our food was tasty and service continued to be good. We were able to use our LivingSocial voucher, which was much appreciated. We did come away saying we enjoyed Capital Grille better- maybe more personable service, just a bit better flavor in the meat, and less of a crowded and noisy dining room. Still, go and see for yourself-it was good."

  • "We went for Father's Day dinner and we couldn't find a single thing to complain about! The food and service were both incredible! We couldn't have asked for better! We will definitely be returning soon!"

  • "My son and I took my husband here for Father's Day. We have eaten here on several occasions and I will admit it has never been one of my favorites but my husband likes it. My husband and son had steaks and they really enjoyed them. I like that a side comes with the entree - unusual is the upscale steak restaurants. I had the chicken entree and it was dry and tasteless. I brought it home and made chicken salad out of it for lunches. Although we had two servers, the service overall was hit and miss. Our son requested a coke refill three times before he received it. The restaurant is very dark, almost too dark - very difficult to see."

  • "Donovan's made our anniversary so special! They had red rose petals on the table and offered us a Crème Brule for dessert! My husband order the filet and it was delicious! Very nice experience!"

  • "The first time we were at Donovan's it was great, but this time the service was outstanding as it was the first time. The food when it came out was not as hot as it should have been and the Bearnaise sauce was almost cold. like it had set out to long. We don't like sending food back because it interrupts our dinner and it takes away from our enjoyment for our night out. We will continue to go to Donovan's but our expectations are higher for our special night out."

  • "Service and food are both outstanding. The steak was perfect as were all the other items we tried while there. Service was excellent as we where very well taken care of with plenty of suggestions about the menu when requested. Very relaxing atmosphere and we never felt rushed in any way."

  • "Recently it was my husband's birthday and I chose Donavon's. Our experience was exceptional from valet to dessert. Our waitress and her back up staff were extremely professional and knowledgeable regarding the menu. Never during the dining experience did we feel rushed. The steaks were prepared as described, and the seafood cooked perfectly. We will definitely return. Thank you Donavon's."

  • "It was very quiet and extremely romantic. Staff was impressive, they only came around when they sensed we needed something so i spent more time alone with my new wife. Valet was ready immediately and polite, we even had then take pictures for us!"

  • "The price of the food does not reflect the quality. My husband and I felt the fillet I ordered and the new york he ordered were tough on the outside and lacked marbling flavor. The shrimp that accompanied my fillet was smothered in a thick butter cream sauce that did not compliment the dish. Overall, we agreed, our visit felt on par with a Texas Roadhouse but at least the steak there is adequately priced. "

  • "We didn't order wine immediately upon being greated and had to wait 20 minutes before our server ever came back to take our drink order. My steak came out blue. I asked for it to be cooked med-rare. When it came back the second time it was cooked very uneven and had a long gristle through the middle of a filet. I could have bought better steaks at Costco. Needless to say I will never go back."

  • "I was looking for some place special to take my husband for his 60th birthday and finally settled on Donovan's, as neither of had ever been there and I'd heard really good things about it! It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Just what I wanted to make his big birthday dinner a special celebration. I would highly recommend Donovan's to anyone that's looking for a fabulous dining experience and not just dinner."

  • "The food was good-overpriced! They sat us so close to another table that it ruined our ambience because they were talking so loud. The service was ok-they rush you. Forgot our wine. Was over this place pretty quickly! "

  • "The servers were amazing. The food imctedible. At 8:45 they ran out of Creme Broulee. So for a $400 dinner for 4 people running out of Desert at 8;45 on a Saturday night was very poor planning especially during restaurant week where they advertised their menu. We ordered drinks and 2 bottles of wine and 3 of four of us wanted the Creme Broulee and settled for berries and cream or cheesecake. The place wasn't even that full. Not sure if we will go back. "

  • "We are so glad they participated in Restaurant Week! It was the only restaurant we had a chance to go to, and we are thankful we chose Donovan's. From the amazing lobster bisque and perfectly cooked beef tenderloin filets and sauteed mushroom side that we added, to the creme brulee, we couldn't have asked for anything better. It definitely would have been pricey otherwise, but we will certainly go again if they participate in future Restaurant Week events. "

  • "We went there for restaurant week, and all of the food was tasty and tender. My friend's Caesar salad didn't seem to be anything special, but all the ingredients were fresh without a wilted piece of lettuce. My lobster bisque had big chunks of meat and was great -- typically I find soups to be salty, but this was tasty without salty. Our steaks were extremely tender and the mashed potatoes were nice and creamy. Both desserts were very rich and we couldn't finish them, even though I thought the creme brulee may have been the best I've had -- it had an even, crispy top sugar layer, and it wasn't too egg-y or overly sweet. The ambiance was great -- not too loud so it was easy to converse, but took a while for eyes to adjust to dark."

  • "I love steak. I eat steak everywhere I go. So I had to try Donovan's, right? The steak was very good. I admit that. And I realize that as steak gets a little better, the price gets a lot higher. Still, if I'm paying triple or quadruple Outback prices, I want to be eating a sublime piece of beef. That didn't happen. Also, the selection is unbelievably narrow. This is a steak house. I expect to see sirloin, for goodness' sake. Sirloin! That's standard. The only choices were filet mignon and New York strip. And the strip was indeed very good. But it was not good enough for that price. The vegetable sides came in French restaurant serving sizes. Very stingy. Overall, nothing said "wow.""

  • "Went of Friday of Restaurant Week. Terrific bar and cocktails (killer Manhattan!), and generally good service by all, but to me the food on the special RW menu seemed more mass-prepped hotel banquet fare than from a premium steakhouse. Was I wrong to expect a hockey puck of crab cake instead of a poker chip? Anchovies on the Caesar were out of a tin, and mousse cake was rubbery. OK at the Sheraton ballroom I guess, but a letdown here. Team service was outstanding until the bill arrived $70 higher than it should have been (quickly fixed), and the valet couldn't find our car in the nearly empty lot. Overall a "C+" experience, but perhaps they were out of sync for Restaurant Week. (Note: Capital Grille was not!)"
