  • "I come here whenever I want a good steak or it's Tuesday. Food is excellent, service attentive. Saturday was no exception. Cocktails first, the hostess asked us to let her know when we were ready to be seated. Not the other way around. Bartender knew his stuff and didn't skimp. A suggestion of adding a twist of lime to my drink was spot on. I had the ribeye medium w/sautéed mushrooms. Tender, juicy, flavorful. Descriptions of the chef's opinion of rare, medium-rare etc. are very helpful. I've never been unhappy with the results. We had standard sides, garlic "smashed" potato and vegetables. I like their potatoes, they leave a bit of skin on and leave some lumps. Excellent wine list, internationally diverse. Key Lime pie, yummy!"

  • "Went to celebrate the boyfriend's birthday, and we were running late and they gladly accommodated us even though we were 1.5hr late to the restaurant. The seated us right away, and three servers came by and greeted us. They were very particular to making sure we got everything we need. The food was great, of course, it was $$$$ on yelp. It was a very romantic night and good dinner."

  • "We were celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday and she ordered the salmon which was inedible - it had a strong fishy taste and did not taste fresh at all with no flavor. She hardly touched her dish but the waiter didn't seem to notice. She didn't return the fish because she didn't want to make a scene but the waiter should have noticed. It was sad because this was supposed to be a special night for her."

  • "We've enjoyed Donovan's Steak and Chop House for several years and have noticed a seady decline in quality and steady increase in price. The bone-in ribeye (my favorite) jumped in price to $67.00. so I ordered the regular ribeye. Very disappointed in flavor, cut, flavor, and taste. We've tried all of the other top name steak houses in SD and the Donovan's in LaJolla was our favorite. I guess our quest will continue to move on. On the positive side, the service was outstanding."

  • "The quality of the food was excellent - especially the bacon wrapped scallop appetizer. We had to wait quite a long while for anyone to ask if we wanted a beverage. The size of the meat entrees was disappointing. The 16 oz rib-eye looked like a 10 ounces. My wife ordered the 10 oz filet that did not quite look the part either. We have dined here a number of times and previously the steaks filled up the plates. To spend well over $100 on entrees alone, one would expect to receive hearty steaks. It was our anniversary and the complimentary creme brulee was excellent."

The waiter stated that they have a medium plus and I went with that. The Filet came and it was very red and rare. I could only get through half of it and my wife ate the rest, since she likes it rare. Disappointing meat experience for me. Thanks for asking for my feedback"

  • "Donovan's is one of the best Steak houses in San Diego. It's pricy, but you definitely get what you pay for in terms of quality and service. I had the 16oz t-bone, medium rare and I can't remember the last time I had a better steak. The steaks are aged, prime beef and you can tell. It was lean, tender, juicy and cooked perfectly. The Au Gratin potatoes were nothing fancy, but very good. Vegetables were snap peas, wax beans and carrots. Definitely fresh, but a bit undercooked for my liking. That's a personal preference however. My only complaint came at dessert time. I ordered a cheese cake with strawberry topping. Definitely tasted like it came out of a box in the kitchen fridge. Definitely underwhelming after such a spectacular meal."

  • "Place was hidden and dated. I have eaten at the one in Gaslamp downtown at it was nicer and more energetic the ambience. Felt like I was at a place in the 80s, kinda stuffy and geriatric. Food was average. If I compare with BOA or CUT, it's like on a scale from 1-10. CUT is a 9 in Wagyu and 8.5 overall and BOA West Hollywood a 8.5 Wagyu and 8.5 overall. Donavan's around a 7. Better than the Butchershop at a 5. Found the NYstrip tough and fatty. Veggies over cooked and servers stiff and not friendly and organized and slow. Disappointed. Prefer the Gaslamp location which I would rank a 8 overall."

We felt very special and will certainly return again. When we arrived our table was only a few minute wait and we never felt ignored. The manager came and got us in the bar and made sure we were happy. What a pleasure to have such an amazing experience. This has got to be in the top five restaurants in San Diego."

  • "Prices are outrageous for everything and it is a stuffy, unimaginative dining room. Very formal and not much fun. Like being at a wealthy grandparent's house where you are afraid to touch anything. I guess that is old school, but the prices are not old school. Steak was very good, but quite honestly, you can get a very good steak for half the price at quite a few other restaurants. Not sure why one would ever go there."

  • "Our first time at this restaurant based on recommendations from friends. What a variation in service. "Main" waiter who took our order had a condescending attitude. Other members of his "team" could not have been better or more appropriately attentive without being intrusive. Foodwise, off to a good start with excellent bread served warm. However, the Caesar salad was absolutely tasteless. No hint of anchovy or cheese; croutons from a package. The filet mignons were cooked perfectly but the sauce on the shrimp had no flavor. Variation in food and service plus the loud noise level unfortunately mean we won't be returning."

Fortunate to be seated in a small room, away from the main dining area that was quite busy and too noisy for our liking. Steaks cooked perfectly (try the filet mignon), oysters as good as they get, everyone paying attention from the valet to maitre d to waiters and buspeople. Classy rat pack atmosphere with panels and in our room, horse racing decor. Classic bar with anything you might want or need. All and all a great meal from start to finish."
