  • "We had a great experience at Donato for my husbands birthday. Amazing service and deliciously crafted food. "

  • "excellent food, nicely designed restaurant, great staff."

  • "Enjoyed visiting this Italian restaurant with my wife and friends on a Sunday afternoon. The food was authentic as was the ambiance. Strong recommendation to try for yourself."

  • "This was our second recent visit to Donato. We visited again because the menu was imaginative, the 3-course prix fixe menu a bargain at $38. We traveled to Redwood City because nothing exists like this in Palo Alto. Parking was convenient just across the street, The restaurant has three different seating areas each with a different ambiance. While the menu was the same we noticed guests ordering more casual foods (pizza) in the front rooms and at the bar. We selected the back room which was like a quieter library. Once again we had delicious food and attentive service. We were impressed with the perfected prepared fish dishes. Tables are well spaced and the lighting is good. As the evening progressed it did get noisier."

  • "Attractive street-side restaurant near downtown Redwood City. Outside tables very pleasant in nice weather. Menu has good selection of creative Italian dishes. Had risotto with pro belly that was done perfectly. Service was prompt and pleasant."

  • "This was my third or so visit to Donato Enoteca. It's very good. We had the seasonal prix fixe, which consists of an artichoke flan-like starter, cannelloni stuffed with short ribs, and a vanilla-themed dessert. Wonderful. I highly recommend it."

  • "This restaurant in Redwood City is REALLY good!! I am never disappointed!!"

  • "This is a wonderful place for a special occasion and a romantic evening. The food and ambiance are great."

  • "The food was delicious, very fresh and unique dishes. Our server was grumpy, which is the only reason for not giving it five stars."

  • "The food here is good and the value is great. They have pasta lunch specials for $10, homemade and fresh. The salad selections are quite good and portions allow you to share as a first course. Very nice overall experience."

  • "Everything we ordered was delicious. Thought the wine by the glass was over priced. The wine we did order was wonderful but if you wanted another glass you might be adding another $20.00 to your bill. Ouch!"

  • "Mind you, that might be just me, I'm a picky eater who like more traditional Italian food. I had been to Donato's about 2 years ago and it was a great experience hence the return visit. The choices were very sparse and very few meat-infused selections. No marsala, scallopini, picata, parmesan combinations that I usually enjoy at Italian eating establishments. The food was well-prepared by expert chefs no doubt and many who like a high-end dining experience would find this place just fine, but I won't be back. The service was great, knowledgeable servers and prices were very reasonable but the portions were appetizer sized. I'd rather pay a little more for more selections and bigger portions."

  • "My son and I sat outside; nice warm evening, so I cannot comment on the interior. The waiter took our order for the nico salad. Not impressed with the flavor. I had the Sea Bass. Two very thin filets on a bed of skin. I mean VERY THIN. My son had the Ravioli. He too was not impressed. Very pricey for what we got. We decided this would NOT be a 'come back.'"

  • "A friend told us about this restaurant and is is truly one of the best Italian restaurants in the area. They have several dining areas, forward for those who like it more frenetic and the back room that is quiet and elegant. Our three course price fixed dinner was outstanding. Our waiter Paul was well-informed about the wines, attentive but noninstrusive. We'll travel again from Palo Alto to Redwood City for this lovely dining experience. The cocktails were perfectly prepared."

  • "First time there and it was great. Everything was the way it should be. Met the owner, very plesant man, and the Chef who trained in Venice, Italy. The new Chef Antonio brings a world of exciting flavors with his dishes. One should try the Chef's Tasting."

  • "One of the most consistent restaurants in the Bay Area, Donato Enoteca has been one of our favorites, which would include many top restaurants in San Francisco. The owner/chef can almost always be seen either in the kitchen, or roaming the dining rooms making sure everything is up to his high standards. There is no better place, in my opinion, in the Bay Area."

  • "They deserve their Michelin Star. I came here to celebrate my Mom's birthday. Everyone in our group was very happy with what they ordered for first course and second course main dish. For the appetizer I ordered the fried artichokes and they were delicious. For the main course I chose the AGNOLOTTI DEL PLIN (Housemade small ravioli "del plin" of three meats; sausage, veal, tomato & onion sauce). Like eating pillows of pasta filled with fantastic meat and delightful sauce. The service we received was excellent. Juan is one of the best waiters I have met in years. He was completely perfect, attentive, and nice to each of us. For dessert my I had the Tiramisu, again excellent. I am looking forward to coming here again."

  • "I probably eat here every couple of months with my wife or with my wife and kids. Housemade pastas are always good and the menu has enough variety to keep you coming back. Though a bit pricey, the mostly Italian wine list offers unique varietals of high quality. I'm glad Donato has remained a staple in the restaurant-starved Peninsula area. One additional note: they take the time to train their waitstaff in wine by bringing in outside experts and so create a more engaged staff that cares about the customer experience."

  • "We love this spot. It's a bit pricey so it is more of a treat but we enjoy just about every aspect when we come. Sunday night's service was a little on the slow side (not the arrival of the food) but we had a great time nonetheless. The food was spectacular. From the bread with olive tempanade, to the salads and entrees. I'm not a huge fan of Italian wines and there is barely any way of knowing what you are ordering. But I'm pretty sure the sommelier would never serve a mediocre wine. The ability to do a half or full glass, as well as the different sized caraffes mean you can try different things."

  • "Food and atmosphere were terrific. Out 8:30 PM reservation wasnt quite honored but after 15 minute wait (along with several others we got a table. Felt the $20 corkage fee was a bit excessive, especially since the wine list is Italian dominant(and pricey),"

  • "Excellent food and even better service. Very nice venue. We dined on a Saturday night it was very crowded including the two big rooms serving groups. As a result it was quite loud and a bit hectic as people and waiters streamed past us to get to the 50 people in a back banquet room. I really recommend the restaurant but would suggest during the week if you want a quiet (and the possibility of a romantic) evening."

  • "I was not very happy with the food, not up to my expectations"

  • "The salad was supposed to be "frisee salad" but was not!! The pizza was super disappointing too with very little tomato sauce and cheese. I won't go back."

  • "Without a doubt, my favorite in Bay Area. The creative ability of Donato is exceptional. My veal chop maybe the best I have had anywhere. My party of four all had same comments about their dishes. We shared so everyone tasted all dishes. We also had a pizza as a second course after the varied appetizers."

  • "We went on a quiet Sunday night and were seated immediately. Service was great (attentive and informative). The sampler appetizer was excellent. They had some nice menu choices. The Bigoli pasta was excellent."

  • "Source: Michellin guide, yelp & google reviews. We went for our Valentine's day dinner. It was a pre-fix menu. None of the food on the pre-fix menu was flavorful it was very bland and felt pre-made and heated up. We went there pretty early at 5.30 pm and still felt the food was not fresh enough. My husband hates coffee and their only desert option was an ice cream with Hazelnut and a base of coffee with cream. It had a very strong coffee flavor. I am vegetarian & told the server so, she asked me to go through the menu, there were plenty of options. She did not bother to point the veg options for me. The only good thing was the bottle of Barolo. Don't go here when there is a pre-fix menu! It was a very bad experience on a special day."

  • "Went for a romantic dinner on Valentine's Day. The problems: 1) they only allowed a 5:15pm reservation which we rushed to hit only to find many two person tables open past 6:00pm. 2) they changed the menu to fixed price and took off the food that we had planned on ordering. 3) The forced us to take a dessert that neither of us wanted and wouldn't allow any substitutions. 4) The waiter clearly did not know the menu of the food as he had to back and ask people for the answers. 5) Food was good but way over priced - bad value. With so many good Italian restaurants in the area we definitely won't be back."

  • "Gourmet Italian with great service. We came in for a Valentine's Day lunch and Donato exceeded our expectations. The pork bellies light and fluffy on a bed of risotto. The pizza with sausage and mushrooms was crispy and bursting with flavor. Donato contributes to the downtown Redwood City appeal!"

  • "I wanted to try this place for awhile now, based on a recommendation of a friend and came in for lunch with my wife. Service was friendly but food was very mediocre. First, everything was marinated - which, i am sorry, but today is a sign on not cooking fresh and not cooking for an occasion - its cooking for money. Second, the salad we ordered was wilted and was amateur cooking at best. If you are looking for a real Italian food try Tigelleria in Campbell or A16 or Socialle in SF - everything is fresh, inventive, organic and created by chefs that want to cook for you."

  • "I always go with Spaghetti al nero, which is my favorite from Donato but recently chose Bigoli and it was great. The food comes in right size and right balance of everything. The service was very friendly and punctual. Cappuccino at the end is a great way to finish a lunch here."

  • "Donato has a nice selection with something for everyone. The food is always fresh and well presented. Their bar is excellent and they try to accommodate your seating preferences. Never been disappointed. It's great if you like Italian food yet there are other tasty dishes to choose from that are not in the Italian category."

  • "Had lunch here last week at an outside patio table and found the food to be much closer to authentic Italian food than most other local places. Had vegetarian risotto they created for me because the menu version had meat; my partner had beef with homemade pici pasta. The olive/pesto spread for the bread was good enough for me to sample even though I had it with a fork because I don't eat gluten. The wine list is lengthy and they offer a long set of choices in multiple sizes. The service was efficient, friendly and discreet. I would definitely go back!"

  • "We were seated right away at a nice table.... but the noise level was high and it was hard to hear the five of us. We waited a long time for the food to come and mine was not warm enough. Overall a disappointment. I will not go again."

  • "Finally got to this restaurant after reading many glowing write-ups. The food was everything people said it was- delectable, beautifully presented, enticing menu choices. One of the best pizzas I have ever experienced! The service was very attentive, our waiter adorably Italian. Too many "I want to try that's" for one visit. We must return. The only negative I must mention was the noise level. This visit was on a Friday night- the place was absolutely packed out the door with a corresponding noise level. I really want to go on a weeknight so the noise doesn't detract from my appreciation of this fine restaurant's memorable food."

  • "This was our first time to dine at this restaurant and we will return. The menu is innovative with an excellent variety of interesting choices. Our appetizers, veal, fish and pasta dishes were delicious. The service is really outstanding - our waiter was friendly, attentive and allowed us to take our time in ordering. Our glasses were always full and our entire meal was served efficiently and correctly. The entire wait staff is to be applauded for their service. Altogether a very enjoyable and relaxing evening."
