A word from Dona Tomas

Dona Tomas is a special restaurant where you almost feel like you're at a lively villa in Mexico enjoying fresh squeezed lime margaritas in the courtyard patio or dining on the authentic regional Mexican cuisine in the main room or the crimson red bar room.

With our seasonally changing menu and our love and respect for Mexican food and culture, we strive to present a culinary experience highlighting our favorite dishes from Mexico. These are often hard to find in American restaurants and it is our goal to update these classics with the bounty of what is available in the Bay Area, serving them in a fun atmosphere where the energy is always exciting.

We use organic, local produce when available, sustainably raised beef, pork and chicken, authentic items like hard to find dried chiles, huitlacoche, verdalogas and much more. We pride ourselves on serving unusual and long forgotten dishes that we have tasted and recreated from our many journeys to Mexico.

  • "We hadn't been to Dona Tomas for a while but having visitors from out of town who wanted "good Mexican food" we thought that DT would be an excellent choice... and it was! As we remembered, the food was excellent as were their cocktails, service was A+ and dining outside was very nice. The only reason why I am not giving 5 stars has do to with the aesthetics of the patio: having the umbrellas in the middle of it make it look a little disarrayed, but otherwise, it's all good! I would go back to DT anytime!"

  • "Got order wrong, promised to get us forks - never happened - i got up and found them myself. Decent food but there's equal or better food in the area, why come here?"

  • "We've been huge fans of Dona Tomas since it opened and after all these years we are still wowed. This is by far the best "new" Mexican food in the Bay Area. All the menu items are original and inventive and perfectly executed. Two favorite dishes are the pork carnitas (delectable, perfectly spiced, dry, pulled), and the chicken enchiladas with mole. All the starters are great and offer vegetarian options. Lots of great options all over the menu for vegetarians. The sopa de lima (not vegetarian) is amazing and when ordered with an appetizer, is a satisfying light dinner. Also worth noting, the margaritas are fabulous. You can customize with your favorite tequila and the list is impressive. Love this place!"

  • "Second time to this restaurant - service from the first greeting until you depart was super. Hostess(s), Bus Boys, and Server all top notch. I had the Pasole Pescada (Halibut) - probably the best prepared halibut I've ever tasted. Will certainly return."

  • "Had a great birthday dinner for my husband and family -- with even a personalized menu! Service was friendly and attentivet, drinks fun -- try the Paloma. Andy is a great general manager -- took time to greet us and give extra special service. Dona Tomas is a reliable and fun neighborhood place that serves high-end Mexican food with a great bar! Hard to find, surprisingly, in the East Bary."

  • "We consistently go to Doña Tomas because it feels just special enough to be different and just comfortable enough for the entire family. Carnitas are consistently a highlight, as are the margaritas and great service. There is no official childs' menu, but our kids know to order a kids' portion of enchiladas or quesadilla or rice and beans...always with handmade, incredible tortillas. It remains high on our "go to" list for when we want gourmet comfort food and great service."

  • "Enjoyed the dining experience very much. Our server could not have been more attentive and cordial. The Carnitas dish was spiced just right. The Enchiladas en Mole Xico was delicious. We had never had Camote (sweet potato puree) before. It was a very nice side dish instead of rice or beans. Margaritas were done right--have one rimmed with chile/salt, yum. Michelada was another new taste experience--dressed up Negra Modelo--definitely would have it again."

  • "I have dined at Dona Thomas before and remembered it as being very good. This time it was just fair. I would go back again because even the best restaurants have off nights. It could have been my choice that was off....the shrimp tacos, smothered in sauteed onion were too oily; not especially tasty. The guacamole was terrific. The service was fine, even though they were training a new waiter. They were very accommodating when I brought a birthday cake. They lit the candles and brought it in with a song. Nice people work there. However, "Vibrant Bar Scene" is euphemistic for noisy. It was that."

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants in SF. The food is always delicious, the menu is constantly changing, and the margaritas are the best we've had."

  • "So happy that dona Tomas is now open for brunch. Everyone in our party order something different and all of the dishes were full of flavor. I love the dinner carnitas but the brunch carnitas were a complete departure more like a ratatouille than a hash. Still great flavor just not what I expected. Chilequiles verdes amazing flavor, Everything I tasted was deliciouso. They even offer basics for those unwilling to try something new. Service as always great."

  • "I've been to Dona Tomas several times over the years. Consistently great food. This visit our table wasn't ready at reservation time. Drinks took a long time.....including when we ordered a bottle of Cava. Otherwise I love this space especially if it is sunny and you can sit outside."

  • "We were surprised to find mushy ceviche, flavorless....and a great piece of halibut in a lukewarm pozole, no zing of lime or chile. The mole enchiladas were way too sweet. And the camote on the side should have been dessert. Even our Mexican hot chocolate after dinner was boring. A disappointment, as the ambience is so friendly and the staff attentive. We've been going to tacubaya on 4th street for years, which we continue to love....but Doña is too much money for uninspired Mexican food."

  • "Growing up on Swanson's Mexican food dinners, I had no idea of how subtle and richly-flavoed, high-quality Mexican cuisine could be. The food at Dona Tomas was fantastic, the ambiance delightfully versatile, the drinks interesting and well-prepared. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "The menu is creative but rather limited. Some of the items seem over- priced for the serving size, especially the shrimp tacos. They do not offer craft beers and the wines by the glass are pricey. We were seated in the back room behind the patio and it lacked the lively ambiance of the front rooms."

  • "BIG thanks to Dona Tomas for all they did to make my girlfriend's birthday really special. After I made the reservation, they called me and said they could customize the menu. This personal touch was so thoughtful and lovely. We had a leisurely dinner and drinks. Our server was wonderfully attentive but gave us space to talk and enjoy the evening. The food was amazing, tamales, quesedillas, everything! THANK YOU SO MUCH for making our celebration an evening to remember."

  • "Even at 6 on Saturday night it was bustling! We managed to find a quieter spot but it would have been too noisy for me in many areas. The friendliness of the entire staff was a big plus. From the greeter to the bus people the staff were welcoming and attentive. My Sangria was delicious w/ big pieces of fruit. The complimentary chips w/ grated cheese and a dipping sauce were yummy. Unfortunately, our entrée, the chicken enchiladas, was too plain and on the dry side. We were surprised b/c we'd never experienced average quality food at Dona Tomas. Although we talked for a long time our waitress encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted. She was exceptionally gracious and helpful. And that Sangria..."

  • "Went on a Sat night to try a restaurant that I have heard and read great things about. The food did not disappoint. All four dishes were great. The Chile Renanos were really outstanding! But we will not return on a busy Sat night again. We could not hold a conversation across the table! We were seated in the room where the bar is located and all 4 of us (2 couples who have known each other for over 25 years) complained about the noise. The area in the middle hall where we waited for out table was just as noisy. The restaurant has no noise tiles and the sound bounces off the walls and ceiling. At least we could not hear the conversation at the tables next to us. But we could not hear the waitress either!"

  • "Dona Tomas was one of our favorites when we lived in North Oakland. After moving to Albany, we haven't had a chance to visit in a while. We returned on Valentine's Day for dinner. We ate in the back annex (shed). It was adequately heated but with a cinder block wall one one side and a metal sheeting wall on the other, it didn't have as nice an ambience as the main part of the restaurant. Our waitress and the staff were excellent and charming and the food was good. It wasn't quite as amazing as past visits but it was a nice meal. The carnitas were a little dry but the crab taquitos, homemade tortillas and guacamole were delicious."

  • "Hard to find Mexican food that stands out from the field. Every dish we ordered was unique in taste. Totally enjoyable ... Loved the scollops and chiles rellenos. Could make a steady diet of that with the guacamole and their premier margaritas"

  • "We had been very much looking forward to dinner at Dona Tomas after hearing rave reviews. My parents ordered sole and enchilada plates and liked their dinner. My husband ordered the albondigas and found it less than expected. Not exactly an entree, more like a side. I ordered the mole vegetables coz I wanted to try the mole. I'm not a vegetarian and so should've stated away. It was not hearty enough complement to the mole. We were disappointed. If we go again, we will try the crane asada and not repeat our menu selections."

  • "Food at Dona Tomas was OK--tasty but not memorable. Portion size was just about right. Found noise overwhelming--unable to have a conversation at the table and made us so uncomfortable we decided to go elsewhere for desert. Felt like a relief when we finally got out of the restaurant. Will probably never return."

  • "We had a rare opportunity for a date night and I regret spending it at Dona Thomas. Despite naking a reservation thru open table, we found ourselves seated in a tiny, very noisy sheet metal trailer outside the main restaurant - walk through the fun looking main restaurant, in the rain to be seated in what looks like a large bus shelter sandwiched between two large parties. I could hear the conversations on either side louder than my date. And it was freezing cold as the wait staff kept leaving the door open (metal shed plus cold and rainy night). The drinks were terrific, the food "meh" - guacamole was tired and brown at the edges, mole was bitter - carnitas were reportedly good. I can't imagine returning here or recommending it."

  • "We've been fans of Dona Tomas since it's opening. Having just returned to the Bay Area we decided to book my birthday dinner for old times sake. For an early (6p) reservation for six we were greeting with zero enthusiasm and offered the table next to the maitre'd and a drafty front door. Had the restaurant been full or had my reservation been last minute this would have not phased me. But the reservation was 2 weeks old and the restaurant was and remained empty throughout the dinner. We were relocated but sadly the tone was set. Later in the evening a second table was reseated mid meal near us as I expect the suffered a similar fate. There are too many good options in the area to return for such a lackluster experience."

  • "When my friend suggested Dona Tomas, I jumped on the suggestion, since I had always wanted to try it! The food was amazingly delicious---Carne Asada with beef so tender, juicy, and flavorful that no knife was needed, and the accompanying asparagus was perfectly done and with equally well balanced seasonings. The lime torte pie was sublime (no play on words intended!) The only drawback was the noise level. We were seated in the red room upfront , which is long and narrow, with many hard surfaces,so perhaps a different location is quieter. I will definitely return!"

  • "Four of us dined at Dona Tomas, in the back red room with the bar. It was a week night and it was not overly noisy, which we appreciated. Margueritas were well made and our dinners were very good. I had the sole and it was excellent and reasonably priced. Our friend, who owns another well known East Bay Mexican restaurant, was dining at the next table. Need I say more? I love the patio when the weather is nice and I would definitely recommend this restaurant. L"

  • "The food, if not "fit for foodies" is certainly good. However....as requested, they gave us the outside room; the inside is impossibly noisy. Two of us have a slight hearing loss and ambient noise is a problem; even the back room was loud with the party of eight there. We had to talk loudly to be heard which, of course, exacerbates the overall noise problem. We would to take another couple, but cannot one is hearing disabled. A personal dislike: a Margarita in a narrow glass. It was hard to control the salt while drinking. Neither Margarita had a flavor that I find particularly good but my friend's Mescal was very interesting. I will go back since I like the food but I would think twice about taking someone I want to talk with."

  • "Margaritas here are the way to go. A great choice of tequilas. However, stay away from the cloyingly sweet sangria unless you like Hawaiian Punch! The carnitas were as good as ever, and we enjoyed the warm cabbage and goat cheese salad, which would have been even better without the pork bits added. The fish, sole, was bland, but OK. Nothing of note. Portions were quite filling, and we decided to forgo desert. For those who enjoy conversation w/o yelling, the room in the back is perfect."

  • "We have been going to Dona Tomas since it opened. The last couple of times we have been there we have been disappointed. The food was mediocre. We have had much better Mexican food at Taqueria's. Don't think we will return. No longer in any way exceptional."
