  • Good, but overpriced and seated in bad area

I've been meaning to try this place for awhile and finally was able to. However, there was a wedding reception going on which occupied the entire front room. They really should've closed the place for this, but we were taken to a back room where I think they normally hold events. It was very chilly back there, and right above the kitchen area with a half wall. As a result we could hear the employees conversations, which weren't rude of the like, but it did kill the atmosphere. The service, I will say, was really good, despite our waiter having to trek back and forth from the back of the house to the front. The food is good. Not great, but not terrible either. I enjoyed it, and would order it again, except it is very overpriced for what you get. That being said, the dessert was exellent, as was the tapas. I likely won't go back for a full meal, but might for wine and dessert, or drinks and some appetizers.

The owners treat everyone as if they are family, constantly traveling through the the dining room to chat with each table while keeping an eagle eye on the servers to make sure our every need was taken care of before realized we needed it! We've eaten here 5 or 6 times and for the first time our table wasn't ready at the time of our reservation. The owner profusely apologized and brought us a small pitcher of sangria to enjoy while we waited for about 10 minutes. The seafood paella for two was perfection.

Tired of paying outrageous parking fees in the city, we decided to try a place near home for our anniversary. Don Quijote turned out to be a spectacular choice! We started with marinated pork and mushrooms for appetizers and ordered a bottle of wine. The staff was attentive but never rushed us - pleasant. The owner comped us a cheese and olive plate and chatted with us off and on the whole evening, he and his lovely wife were charming. Main courses were amazing! We had Paella Valenciana and Lenguado Frito and shared a flan for dessert. The chef's special port topped off the evening. In a nutshell, charming setting, great food and service. We'll be back!

The owners Carlos Rivero and Elena Jambrina bring a taste of authentic Spanish food to Valparaiso. The menu offers a wide variety of selections: pork, beef, lamb, chicken, seafood or vegetarian. Everything is prepared from scratch, including the desserts. The restaurant is comfortable and service is attentive. I highly recommend Don Quijote and look forward to my next visit.

We had a nice time celebrating my daughter's 14th b-day there. Educational too, as it was a chance to talk to my kids about the Don Quixote's character and the world literature! Both my daughters promised to read the book soon. Elena added a personal touch by checking on us twice and having a long conversation with us. Both food and atmosphere were good. Pricey though.

Problems with our reservation, though we didn't need one, since the place was empty. We booked for 7 PM, only to find they were planning to close at 6:45 (door said 8 PM). I could see why. Overpriced drinks, cheapest wine was $31. Sangria weak. Tapas very ordinary. Mine had five tiny chunks of dried-out pork, the mushrooms in garlic were swimming in water. The paella Valenciana was very poor, gummy rice, whole bottom half was inedible, frozen TV dinner peas, three tiny mussels, a few bits of unidentifiable seafood, and two tiny chunks of chicken, all in maybe a 7" pan. Lamb stuffed with olives was a few rubbery slices of overcooked lamb with no obvious olives. Desserts were poor, apple almond cake like a hard cookie. Not rushing back.

This was our fourth dining experience at Don Quoite. The service is impeccable the food was perfectly prepared and presented. The side of veggies with my stuffed trout was the best veggie I've ever had - anywhere. The owner keeps an eagle eye on his staff to make sure his customers are being taken care of. He stops at each table to make sure you're happy and to answer questions about the menu. I can't wait to go back!

Our family made a special "side trip" on our summer vacation just to come back and visit Don Quijote. The food is truly exceptional, and the paelleas are a "must have." Home-made sangria is exceptional and there is a "non-a" version too. Most desserts are made on site and the flan is to die for. The owners are VERY engaged with their clients...it would be nearly impossible to get bad service or a bad meal here with their attention to detail. It's not cheap, it's not fast food - it's as authentic a Spanish dining experience as I've had outside my last trip to Malaga. If you have the opportunity - DO IT!

Don Quijote is a very authentic Spanish restaurant. A huge menu for tapas and main courses. The prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent. I really like to go there because the owners are very involved in the restaurant and in the community of Valparaiso. Regularly offer fund raising dinners and scholarshipsnto students. It is great to have this restaurant in our community.

Wife and I recently dined at Don Quijote for our wedding anniversary..started with a pitcher of homemade sangria..delicious..appetizer of calimari..tasty.. My wife had steak which was cooked just right, and I had paella, chocked full of seafood, chicken, and saffron rice..so filling..restaurant was fairly empty so the noise factor was low, could carry on conversation, enjoy the intimate feel, service was prompt, server was friendly. Food is a little pricey, but overall, a great dining experience..

The restaurant was almost deserted on the weekday night. Less than 1/4 of all tables were occupied around 7pm, which should have been a good indication of how the restaurant was received by the local community, not some random folks on the internet. Service was slow and the waitress didn't seem to care much. The food itself was OK, I mean really only OK, probably on par with much cheaper family restaurant chains like TGI Fridays. For the quality of the food, the place is overpriced by more than 50~60%. I would've been content if the $10+ tapas were priced around $6, ~$25 paella around $15. Given the uniqueness, maybe a dollar or two more. Highly disappointed and will not recommend to anyone. Unless you're made out of money, of course.

Don Quijote is the real deal Spanish restaurant, through and through. The Spanish owners/chefs are fully engaged in the day-to-day running of the restaurant, making the food and the experience a little corner of Spain in the corner of Indiana (un pedacito de España en el rincón de Indiana). While the food isn´t cheap, the quality of ingredients from Spain is essential to the final result. Saturday night with live guitar music was an excellent choice!

Loved our food--appetizers and entrees and desserts. We were a party of five ladies who attended Purdue together and get together every couple of months or so. We always have a lot to talk about. It was great to linger. However, we realize that since we were there for lunch, and there were tables still open, we could linger, which we did for a few hours. We would not have done that if tables were not open since we all agree that it is rude not to assume others have reservations. Nevertheless, the staff were patient with us. The chef also sent along two complimentary appetizers--lovely. Finally, the desserts were absolutely luscious and the dessert chef came out to ask if we were enjoying them--very thoughtful.

First off, this place is authentic Spanish food, practically everything on the menu is unique to the location as far as this area goes. Secondly, it's small. The table placement however is quite good and it does not feel cramped. There's a stage for live music which I missed out on, and the decor of the room is excellent. The staff is highly professional and very quick to refill your drinks and attend to any of your needs. Also the chefs are very involved and come around to talk to nearly every table. From what I had, the food is outright amazing all around. Every tapas we tried was great, I had the swordfish which was delicious, especially combined with the mushroom tapas. The place is not cheap, but it's well worth the price.

Having been to Spain, I've wanted to eat here for a while. It has an nice outdoor dining feel, but is a bit outdated. Wait staff were knowledgeable, attentive. They have a tremendous wine list. The food was made w/ quality ingredients, and flavors were nice. We started w/ calamari, yummy NOT rubbery or fishy as often found in IN. I had the tapas combo dinner and my husband had the lamb. It came out fast, appeared not to be freshly made, crust on empanada beautiful but soggy, sauce on meatballs congealed, lukewarm. Flavors were excellent, so still gave food 3 stars. Lamb was tender, juicy. The chef/owner came out, greeted guests, very nice personal touch. There appeared to be "regulars" dining. I would go again and try some other selections.

This was our first visit, and we were very impressed with everything we experienced. The wait staff were very attentive. The wine list was extensive and unusual. We went out on a limb and tried some dishes we normally wouldn't have chosen, and they even made changes to mine when there were ingredients I didn't like! The chefs came out and checked on everyone...and made sure we were pleased with our meals. Dessert was exquisite, and the lovely tasting of port at the end of the meal was an amazing touch! We plan to go back much more often now that we know what a gem this place is!!

Loved everything about the experience. From the friendly owners to the experienced waitstaff. The food was perfect, so flavorful and fresh. We had the tapas combo and it came with albondigas, chorizo, garlic mushrooms, potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce, and a quiche type egg and potato dish (these were the hit of the platter, surprisingly,!) The fresh bread and aioli was addictive and perfect with the tapas. We then had the paella marinera which was fresh and delicious, the mussels and crab were our favorites out of the dish, so we were left wishing there were just a few more of each of these items. The hazelnut cake was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The live music was an unexpected treat that we enjoyed. A+ on all counts.

We were seated promptly on arrival (reservations are recommended for weekends). The servers were attentive without hovering. Everyone in our party of four was VERY pleased with their dishes. Portions are very generous and the atmosphere was wonderful. The entertainment (Saturday nights only, I believe) was very good, appropriate dinner music without overwhelming the conversation. Don Quijote is definitely going on our "fave" list of local restaurants.

i had great food and wine, one in our group found her fish a little overcooked, but everything else was good. the service was great and the chef/owner made several pass by's filling up our wine and chatting with us, making it a very fun experience. I will come back again.
