Diner Reviews
  • "Our family made a special "side trip" on our summer vacation just to come back and visit Don Quijote. The food is truly exceptional, and the paelleas are a "must have." Home-made sangria is exceptional and there is a "non-a" version too. Most desserts are made on site and the flan is to die for. The owners are VERY engaged with their clients...it would be nearly impossible to get bad service or a bad meal here with their attention to detail. It's not cheap, it's not fast food - it's as authentic a Spanish dining experience as I've had outside my last trip to Malaga. If you have the opportunity - DO IT!"

  • "Wife and I recently dined at Don Quijote for our wedding anniversary..started with a pitcher of homemade sangria..delicious..appetizer of calimari..tasty.. My wife had steak which was cooked just right, and I had paella, chocked full of seafood, chicken, and saffron rice..so filling..restaurant was fairly empty so the noise factor was low, could carry on conversation, enjoy the intimate feel, service was prompt, server was friendly. Food is a little pricey, but overall, a great dining experience.."

  • "The restaurant was almost deserted on the weekday night. Less than 1/4 of all tables were occupied around 7pm, which should have been a good indication of how the restaurant was received by the local community, not some random folks on the internet. Service was slow and the waitress didn't seem to care much. The food itself was OK, I mean really only OK, probably on par with much cheaper family restaurant chains like TGI Fridays. For the quality of the food, the place is overpriced by more than 50~60%. I would've been content if the $10+ tapas were priced around $6, ~$25 paella around $15. Given the uniqueness, maybe a dollar or two more. Highly disappointed and will not recommend to anyone. Unless you're made out of money, of course."

  • "Don Quijote is the real deal Spanish restaurant, through and through. The Spanish owners/chefs are fully engaged in the day-to-day running of the restaurant, making the food and the experience a little corner of Spain in the corner of Indiana (un pedacito de España en el rincón de Indiana). While the food isn´t cheap, the quality of ingredients from Spain is essential to the final result. Saturday night with live guitar music was an excellent choice! "

  • "Loved our food--appetizers and entrees and desserts. We were a party of five ladies who attended Purdue together and get together every couple of months or so. We always have a lot to talk about. It was great to linger. However, we realize that since we were there for lunch, and there were tables still open, we could linger, which we did for a few hours. We would not have done that if tables were not open since we all agree that it is rude not to assume others have reservations. Nevertheless, the staff were patient with us. The chef also sent along two complimentary appetizers--lovely. Finally, the desserts were absolutely luscious and the dessert chef came out to ask if we were enjoying them--very thoughtful. "

  • "My friends and I have wanting to go to Don Quijote for awhile, but had to postpone a few times. It was well worth the wait! Our meals were exquisite, the service phenomenal, and the overall experience is one I will never forget. Bravo!"

  • "First off, this place is authentic Spanish food, practically everything on the menu is unique to the location as far as this area goes. Secondly, it's small. The table placement however is quite good and it does not feel cramped. There's a stage for live music which I missed out on, and the decor of the room is excellent. The staff is highly professional and very quick to refill your drinks and attend to any of your needs. Also the chefs are very involved and come around to talk to nearly every table. From what I had, the food is outright amazing all around. Every tapas we tried was great, I had the swordfish which was delicious, especially combined with the mushroom tapas. The place is not cheap, but it's well worth the price."

  • "M and I have been enjoying Restraunte don Quijote since the restaurant opened 25 years ago. The food, service, and entertainment have always been excellent. Even though the restraint was packed with Valentine Day diners on this visit our total experience was FIVE STAR. kudos Carlos and Elena"

  • "Wonderful for any occasion! My wife Bobbi and I have been coming to Don Quijote's for years now - each time real joy. The food is great; the wine selection is truly noteworthy; the service is impeccable; the atmosphere is perfect. We like to bring family and friends to share the experience. Carlos and Elena are remarkable restaurateurs!"

  • "Having been to Spain, I've wanted to eat here for a while. It has an nice outdoor dining feel, but is a bit outdated. Wait staff were knowledgeable, attentive. They have a tremendous wine list. The food was made w/ quality ingredients, and flavors were nice. We started w/ calamari, yummy NOT rubbery or fishy as often found in IN. I had the tapas combo dinner and my husband had the lamb. It came out fast, appeared not to be freshly made, crust on empanada beautiful but soggy, sauce on meatballs congealed, lukewarm. Flavors were excellent, so still gave food 3 stars. Lamb was tender, juicy. The chef/owner came out, greeted guests, very nice personal touch. There appeared to be "regulars" dining. I would go again and try some other selections."

  • "This was our first visit, and we were very impressed with everything we experienced. The wait staff were very attentive. The wine list was extensive and unusual. We went out on a limb and tried some dishes we normally wouldn't have chosen, and they even made changes to mine when there were ingredients I didn't like! The chefs came out and checked on everyone...and made sure we were pleased with our meals. Dessert was exquisite, and the lovely tasting of port at the end of the meal was an amazing touch! We plan to go back much more often now that we know what a gem this place is!!"

  • "Went to dinner celebrating a birthday. The tapas were great especially the serrano jamon and cheese and the patatas bravas. The home made sangria was excellent. Service was good and the ambiance was nice. We had not been here in a while and were happy that we came back."

  • "Loved everything about the experience. From the friendly owners to the experienced waitstaff. The food was perfect, so flavorful and fresh. We had the tapas combo and it came with albondigas, chorizo, garlic mushrooms, potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce, and a quiche type egg and potato dish (these were the hit of the platter, surprisingly,!) The fresh bread and aioli was addictive and perfect with the tapas. We then had the paella marinera which was fresh and delicious, the mussels and crab were our favorites out of the dish, so we were left wishing there were just a few more of each of these items. The hazelnut cake was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The live music was an unexpected treat that we enjoyed. A+ on all counts."

  • "The service was ok, the restaurant was romantic but tables were to close together it was like sitting with the next table and I really cant say anything good about the food, I had steak was not impressed at all my husband had crab legs part of them were empty when you cracked them open, the bread was good that was it, would not recommend to anyone!!!! Everything was over priced"

  • "We were seated promptly on arrival (reservations are recommended for weekends). The servers were attentive without hovering. Everyone in our party of four was VERY pleased with their dishes. Portions are very generous and the atmosphere was wonderful. The entertainment (Saturday nights only, I believe) was very good, appropriate dinner music without overwhelming the conversation. Don Quijote is definitely going on our "fave" list of local restaurants."

  • "We chose this restaurant for our very infrequent date night. We had a reservation and were immediately seated. It took 10 mins for a waiter to bring us water. The chef stopped at our table. We let him know that no one had even taken our drink order or given us the free bread. Several more minutes passed. Our teas and bread arrived.Add 10 mins before our appetizer order was taken. The food was good. Dinner arrived quickly. It was very good but not up to the hype.We finished eating and waited 10 mins for someone to notice. We asked for a box which took 5 mins to get.The check arrived and we paid our $70 bill with cash and waited 5 minutes until we flagged someone down to take it. Add another 10 mins as we waited for our change. We won't return."

  • "Treated two of my staff to dinner at Don Quijote's last Thursday. They both loved it as it was their first time in the restaurant. I loved it also and it was my 3rd or 4th visit. Our server, Jessica, explained a lot to the newbies and gave us "plenty of space" to decide our order. We started with their homemade Sangria and chose an appetizer to share. Each of us decided on a different main entree so as to try each other's food! The ambiance was great and music was appropriate for the theme. Other wait staff were also cordial and we were really impressed when the owner/chef came out and greeted each table. I will be going again, and would recommend this as a "Must Try" whenever you are in Valpo. Mary M. Hobart, IN"

  • "WOW!!! We lived in NW Indiana for several years and for some reason Valparaiso wasn't on our list of cities to go to for a dinner out. But since we moved away we headed to the Dunes area for our 10th wedding anniversary and decided to try Don Quijote. One of the restaurant owners greeted us upon arrival and seated us at their most romantic table (and close to the live guitar music). The other owner stopped by our table and greeted us and kissed my hand! The food is amazing. We opted for several different tapas and everything tasted as it did when we were in Spain several years ago. The Spanish Limonada was refreshing and delicious, the gazpacho was amazing, all of the tapas were terrific and the flan was the best I've ever enjoyed!"

  • "The paella was extraordinary, and the tapas were great. Robert, our waiter, was very attentive, and engaged us in a relaxed, easy going conversation. The owners each stopped at the table, asking about our meal, and gave great suggestions about our upcoming trip to Spain. My wife and I absolutely loved the entire experience, and found the prices to be very reasonable for the quality and quantity received."

  • "We arrived a bit before our reservation and wanted to look at the shop that is adjacent to the restaurant. The owner, Elena, came out, let us into the shop (it was closed) and stayed with us, talking about our interests, helping with wine selection, etc. She was very kind. We then walked back to the restaurant and began the best part of eating tapas - ordering a few items at a time, eating, drinking, talking, enjoying. Our server was decent, but I think he was new. The other owner, Carlos, came out and we spoke for a bit. We loved everything we tried - dishes of special interest were the Paella, Potato Bravas, and the Tortilla. When we ordered dessert, Carlos brought us a glass of his reserve Sherry - Delish!"

  • "I like this restaurant; but if you are seated in the center section, you feel like you are really hemmed in. I was seated back-to-back with a person who was less than a foot away; and I could hear that person better than I could hear the people at my table. Having said that, the food is great. The owner and waiter were very attentive, and the overall Spanish influence is nice. We also enjoyed the entertainment."

  • "Food was good, was way overpriced. Nothing special about the lamb I ordered that was $25.. average price for everything on the menu. Our waiter recommended that we not drink the tap water as it looked "cloudy". He then brought us bottled mineral water and charged $3.25 each!! We had a party of 6, the policy is a 17% gratuity was to be automatically added. Our bill came to over $200. We paid it and left. 15 minutes later I got a call on my cell from the restaurant's owner asking why we didn't leave a tip!!! I promptly repeated her policy back to her about the gratuity..she said it hadn't been added in by mistake. She wanted me to authorize a tip to be put on everyone's credit card!! Overcharged for pop too..will NEVER go back!"

  • "Authentic Madrid tapas. The seasoning was right on the spot for Spanish food. Without a doubt the best paella I have ever eaten outside Spain. If this place was in Chicago it would be nearly impossible to get a table. We were driving through and they were able to accommodate our party on a busy Saturday evening."
