Diner Reviews
  • "I don't understand places that bring out your food when it's ready. The pod was delicious, but it's arrival at sporadic times made me think that the kitchen is lazy, regardless if that is true or not. The food and service otherwise was fantastic. The blue crab fried rice was a delicious side, as well as the fried radish cakes and morning glory. We'll go back again."

  • "Doi Moi provided a fantastic experience for dinner this past Saturday. The fried radish cakes were particularly great, and a little change of pace. I will be recommending Doi Moi, and can't wait to go back myself."

  • "My boyfriend tried Doi Moi for the first time and had a great night. We tried several dishes and our favorites were the seared scallops in green curry and the bun bo xao. Wines by the glass were a little pricey so we opted for a $25 bottle of white wine. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!"

  • "Really enjoyed dining at this stylish restaurant with wonderful thai food. The vietnamese curry soup was just perfect and the server and kitchen were very helpful with my food allergies. Would definitely return to Doi Moi. Loved it!"

  • "Food was very pricy for small portions and super spicy. They were unwilling to make any substitutions. When my friend had to return her dish because the spice was too strong to eat, they offered to bring her another dish and then tried to charge is for both! Their famous vegetarian and vegan menu was simply the main menu cut down to show the veg/vegan/gluten free items. Very disappointed."

  • "Huge fan of Vietnamese food, which can be hard to find within the district (apart from chains that don't do too much authentically). This was very refreshing because it had many dishes I hadn't seen since my time in Vietnam such as the Cha Ca La Vong (cod with turmeric and till). Service was great and the atmosphere was fresh and vibrant."

  • "We had read a review in the Washingtonian that was not very flattering. Either Doi Moi has improved greatly or perhaps the reviewer was someplace different. We ordered far and wide on the menu, guided exceptionally by our waitress. Service was really good and we enjoyed every dish. Some really unique, creative dishes. The menu is perfect for a couple like us, we enjoy lots of smaller sharing plates spread out over a comfortable period. The place opens at 5 and by 5:15 it was moderate, by 6 it was full. We were through the door early but knowing what we know now it would have been worth standing in line for a table. Go. Go early."

  • "The food was excellent - definitely try the morning glory as a starter. The food comes out as it is ready so it's a good place to share with your company or else you might be eating alone."

  • "During the meal and afterwards, all my girlfriend and I could keep talking about was how we wished we were back in Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. That's how good the food was. It was our first time at Doi Moi, but we'll be back,"

  • "Good to very good. Grilled shrimp yummy as was the pork belly, even though the latter was quite fatty."

  • "Spicy food options with limited opportunity for functional protein. Everything that was protein option was a little two out there (and I'm typically open to a lot). If you don't like spicy, do not go here."

  • "All of the food we ate at Doi Moi was really good. We shared four appetizers, of which I'd recommend the marinated beef, and two favorite meals at our table were the chicken and noodle curry and the blue crab fried rice. The food was tasty and tender. Portion sizes were normal - most might say small the way we eat today. You definitely had room for dessert at the end although the dessert selections are really minimal. Service was good until it got crowded and then it took forever - waiter didn't even seem to be in a rush. We waited at least 30 minutes for our bill after desserts were cleared."

  • "My friend and I tried the coconut lemongrass chicken wings, mushroom garlic and chive dumplings, fried pineapple and the sea scallop curry. As someone who eats meat very very infrequently and prefers seafood when I do eat me, it was very surprising to me that I actually preferred the chicken wings to the scallops. The scallops themselves were great but the curry they came in tasted a little fishy to me. The chicken wings were very tasty, well fried and came with a great sauce. The dumplings were wonderful and the fried pineapple was a surprising dish that I really loved. Cocktails were small but presented very well and our waiter was superb. He was very friendly and welcoming and made us feel comfortable the whole time."

  • "The sablefish was amazing. The noodle dish was great as well, but I did not stand out. Reservations are only at 5, 5:30 and 6, otherwise it is first come, first serve."

  • "Our server made great recommendations and the food was delicious - marinated steak, bok choy, chicken. All were delicious. Did not love the cocktails as much. Service was great."

  • "Look, we don't hold on back when we dine out and it is hard to feel sticker shock in this city, but for what we spent, the meal was pretty minimal, compared to what a meal would be at Rose's Luxury, Kapnos, an Andres restaurant, or some of the other hot spots around town. The food was definitely delicious but quite steep. I think we would have left a bit happier if the drinks had any alcohol in them, but we each had two cocktails (from the tasty but limited menu) and didn't feel a thing... they were more a delicious soft drink than anything else. In short, don't make this your first stop on the dining scene because, remarkably, you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere."

  • "Really amazing food. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share and everything was incredible. Definitely get the spicy cashews, and the jungle curry."

  • "Had a uniformly excellent first experience at Doi Moi. Server was knowledgeable about the menu and with one exception everything exceeded expectations Daikon radish cakes were bland, but the dipping sauce was tangy and perfectly balanced, and they were a good respite from the scallops, which were indeed "phet" (deliciously so). We enjoyed the scallops, the duck curry (soak up the sauce with sticky rice), a buttery and luscious sablefish, and the coconut panacotta. Drinks had just the potency. A great take on two great cuisines. "Doi Moi" is well chosen."

  • "We went because it was so highly rated by the Post and Washingtonain, we ate a number of the dishes they recommended but it was good nothing more. For what you got it was also expensive for what you got. A chicken thigh in curry sauce with noodles is not worth $18. If you want Asain and are in Logan Circle Great Wall is a lot better and much cheaper."

  • "Doi Moi was great! First, the minimalistic decor is very appealing. Our server was most pleasant, knowledgeable, and helped us through the large, interesting and appealing menu. We loved everything we ordered, although we probably could have had one less dish as all of our selections were sizable. We would recommend and definitely return to Doi Moi."

  • "The feeling is one of being "rushed" through decisions, staff constantly cleaning of the table, staff removal of utensils that are still needed. The staff actually moves you very quickly through the meal and then out the door. The "rushed" experience 'could' be more acceptable @ lunch. But DM is not open for lunch. Dinner should be pleasant and calming. There's nothing calming about the DM experience. The food was OK, nothing special. The prawns were impossible to eat. What I managed to eat was tasteless. Scallops in curry were good but the spoon was taken away making it difficult to "spoon out" the sauce. By the time I was able to obtain another spoon the sauce was cool. A dish arrived that was not ordered. YIKES !!"

  • "I've been here twice, and the food was barely memorable. Also, the service was...serviceable. Both servers I had were a bit unfriendly, and I am someone who doesn't need to be best friends with the restaurant staff. Disappointing - I think it's a bit overrated. But the space itself is lovely, and I like the open kitchen."

  • "Food is good but it's too pricey for a regular Vietnamese/Thai food. Nothing special to pay that extra price. Huong Viet a Vietnamese restaurant in the Eden center in Falls Church, VA is a lot better and cheaper too. If you haven't been to good restaurants in the area Doi moi is a good place to try this cuisine, but just expect to pay a lot of money. But the ambiance and the service is excellent."

  • "Proper Asian food from among the diverse cultures, if done fittingly, offers aromatic, multi-layered, multi-dimensional tastes, sometimes contrasting, sometimes complementing. Although the DOI MOI menu identifies phat as spicy and phat mak as ultra spicy, while not specially designating non-burning dishes, the prospective diner needs to be super on-guard that no matter what dish is ordered [especially those with sauces] the possibility of getting totally mouth-numbed by a singular, exaggerated, scorching, blazing, experience such that if there may have been subtle flavors somewhere in the dish, the chance of tasting them using your cauterized taste-buds is largely unattainable. What could they be thinking?"

  • "In general , a creative menu, and well-prepared food. Service was a bit inconsistent on this last visit, with appetizer being significantly delayed."

  • "A fun night out; waiter was energetic and excited about the menu. Offerings labeled spicy were truly spicy. Like the small plates concept. Some good vegetarian options including radish cakes but would like to see the vegetarian menu expanded to include spring rolls."

  • "Seemed to be quite a hot spot for the younger crowd in DC. Most notable is the fact that one particular server, Oscar, who filled up our water glasses, is probably the most attentive and gentle person I've encountered in a restaurant in a long time. Wow, what service. Our waitress was also exceptional, asking us if we wanted our pictures taken. She was knowledgeable about the food and wasn't pushy for us to buy drinks or anything. The ambience was lively and hip. I wasn't particularly impressed with the food, though. It probably caters more to the western taste and for me, didn't have much authenticity as far as Vietnamese or whatever cuisine the restaurant was serving."

  • "On a snowy Sunday evening still a good number of diners. A pleasant relaxed atmosphere. We noticed the staff was very friendly and kind to all, including a young couple with a toddler. We do not enjoy hot (spicy) food, but were able to make choices with less heat. The sable fish with dill was excellent as was the lemon grass beef, both had a nice blending of flavors. The crab fried rice was a good comfort food."

  • "I loved Doi Moi. I had been dying to go since it opened, and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious, and the spice level lives up to its reputation, which was great. But there are options for those who don't like too much spice. One of the best things on the menu was actually the ginger-caramel swirl ice cream. You wouldn't necessarily think this, but it was amazing. We ordered two. The wait staff is also friendly and helpful. I would definitely go there again!"
