Dobbs Ferry RestaurantGreat pre-opera spotWonderful place all around, food, wine list, atmosphere. We will be back and have already recommended it to our friends6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went for dinner beforeWe went for dinner before the opera. The scallops were perfectly done and the arugula salad complemented them nicely. Service was slow and perfunctory. The waiter did not take our order for drinks or entrees in a timely manner. Once taken, however, the drinks and food appeared quite promptly. I would return because the meal was delicious, but if service failed again I'd take my business elsewhere.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst visit was excellentOur first visit to Dobbs Ferry was a pleasant surprise. The warm olives appetizer was a superb, the shrimp and calamari had just the right amount of heat and the sauce for the pasta with mussels and scallops was rich and flavorful. After much debate we chose the cheesecake for desert with macerated strawberries and that was special. Service attentive and timely. We'll be back!6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place to hit beforeGreat place to hit before you see a show at Davies.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were a group of six diningWe were a group of six dining before attending the Symphony. Our waiter, Billy, was sensitive to our schedule, was helpful in recommending wine and in explaining the menu. Our dining experience was most enjoyable and we will definitely be back.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGluten freeThe restaurant have a large variety of gluten free food.
Their pizza was delicious5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMWe go for dinner before theWe go for dinner before the symphony and have a tight schedule. The waiters and kitchen always get us out in time. The drinks are well made and we love the warm olives as an appetizer. We always start with "The Wedge" salad - so good and big enough to share. My friend usually gets a pizza, I think with sausage, which he loves and I usually choose from the various appetizers or sides which have always been ample, imaginative and very tasty. We like the ambience and service and will be there before our next symphony.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMSaturday BrunchHad brunch last Saturday. Someone, unfortuantely me, screwed up the reservation. As a result we had the main dining room pretty much to ourselves. We had two orders of chicken and waffles, bacon and egg pizza, waffles and pepparoni pizza. The waffle did have bacon in it and everything is better with bacon. The bacon and egg pizza was outstanding, especially loved the crust. For dessert we split the doughnutswhich were covered in cinnamon and served with carmel for dipping. I have no idea how anyone could have eaten an order by themselves. The entire staff couldn't have been nicer. My only complaint is that it took over 30 minutes to get our food after we ordered. However, since we were in no hurry, no harm done.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMDobbs Ferry in San FranciscoI grew up in Connecticut, not far from Dobbs Ferry New York so was curious about the connection at this Hayes Valley restaurant. My husband and I went after the symphony on a Friday night (6:30 concert so about 8:45) with a reservation and both had a great experience. I had a martini which was expensive but generous, then the scallops--three big, fat, seared to perfection mollusks on a bed of creamy farrow and peas. It was delicious. My husband had the chicken, a house favorite we were told, and it came covered with pickled peppers. As he is NOT a fan of hot spice, he carefully moved each one to my plate. I ate two or three leaving perhaps 8. Once the peppers were removed, he pronounced the chicken, unusual, interesting, then good.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for dinner before symphony. This is a pleasant, homey restaurant with good food. The flavors were excellent. Friendly service, good bar, relaxing environment. It is within walking distance to Symphony Hall.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Eats Before the SymphonyIt's been here for a while, but it was my first time at Dobbs Ferry, and I will definitely be returning.Great ambiance; not too noisy but they have a busy bar apart from the restaurant. Ordered a Lemon Drop-yummy. My friend and I split an appetizer of homemade potato chips with a bacon bean dip, and when we slammed the chips back, the waitress appeared with more chips. It was delicious! A white beet and grapefruit salad was fresh and the flavors blended well. For dinner I had the pork chop with cherry sauce and hush puppies, and it was more than I could eat. The pork was cooked to perfection--tender, moist, and tasty. There was no room left for dessert and after the cherry sauce with the pork, I felt I'd already had dessert. A must-try.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMA restaurant to return toFriendly, knowledgeable service. Very good food. Good location for Civic Center opera, ballet, jazz center.
This was a second visit and would definitely go again.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat before the symphony spotAll of our dishes were great- they were interesting and healthy and not too heavy! The zeppoli even seemed fairly light and were delicious!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMDefinitely Coming BackCocktails and food were surprisingly original and really quite good - Asparagus with goat cheese fondue appetizer, warm grilled octopus salad, both truly divine. Linguine with lamb shank ragu (there was a ton of lamb in there!), and SMOKED LAMB BACON!! Amazing chicken, no kidding. WOW. Portions are huge - you will leave with a doggie bag no matter what you order.
Sadly, the service was mediocre at best - our waiter was a really nice guy, but chatted with his colleagues and folded napkins without ever looking up at his tables. At this level of dining you shouldn't have to flag your waiter down to take your order, ask for bread, get a second cocktail, etc. But the food was so good that we'll go back to give the service a second chance.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat spot in Civic Center areaI was going to the Ballet and meeting a friend for a bite before the show. Dobbs proved to be exceptional and a wonderful start to our evening out. The food was delicious, fast service (sensitive to our event start) and freindly too. We were both very pleased with meals and service. Will go here again soon.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMLove the gardenIt is very pleasant to see they kept trees and added flowers to incorporate the little garden space into the main dining room.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat brunch before a matinee! My wife & I were thoroughly charmed by the staff at Dobbs Ferry last Sunday for brunch. The service was attentive without them looming over you. The entrees were inventive and delicious. We left Dobbs Ferry delighted!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMLove the Egg Pizza!Wasn't crowded but the place was clean and friendly. The brunch menu didn't sound interesting but the egg and bacon pizza, as well as the smoked salmon on potato pancakes, were delicious.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMYum... my first experienceYum... my first experience of The Burger + fabulous fries = delicious! Always happy to dine here... Thanks! *AA*5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMDobbs Ferry was exceptional !This was a perfect before the Symphony choice and we will definitely be returning. Their house smoked salmon with frisee on crispy rye is a generous appetizer not to be missed. We both ordered the lamb shank linguini with pea shoots and parmesan, a wonderfully flavorful dish. Because I cannot eat gluten, I was delighted to find they will readily make pasta recipes, including pizza, gluten free upon request. Service was attentive and the waiter's informed suggestions regarding their many unique menu choices was helpful. Pleasantly lively with a comfortable noise level permitting table conversations that could be easily heard. All in all Dobbs Ferry offers amazing original recipes in a pleasant environment. A great value!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe loved it! Great menu, wonderfulWe loved it! Great menu, wonderful dishes.....the chips & dip YUM! There was an upbeat vibe that made us feel very welcome.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMBest wait staff in the city!I cannot overstate how excellent the service was. I kept my eye on other tables, and across the board, beautifully done. Ample staff, well trained: prompt, attentive without being intrusive, and welcoming. This being for a party of two older women, quite an exceptional encounter. Stark contrast to last week's visit to another restaurant nearby where the staff seemed to be playing a game of avoiding eye contact. The food is delicious and well prepared, and the timing of course delivery is perfect. Ask for a table under the skylight to best enjoy the back room.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything our group of fourEverything our group of four ordered was fantastic! Seafood soup was amazing! a special on the menu. grilled
Halibut wonderful and perfectly cooked. Great service, they helped us get to our symphony on time! We will return soon!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful service-kind, quick,Wonderful service-kind, quick, professional, and attentive-and they were very helpful in guiding us toward the gluten-free options. Food was great!4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGuaranteed to always be tops!Dobbs Ferry is tops in the fine/fun dining category. Their menu and food are consistently excellent, with many seasonal choices along with regular dishes like the smoked salmon over a potato cake! We keep coming back because it is delicious every time and the attention we get is fabulous. Their service gets top marks as well. We are always cordially greeted and welcomed back, as if we were coming home after a long day at work! Robert is the most intuitive waiter I've ever met! He knows what we want before we've even realized it ourselves. We have never been disappointed with Dobbs Ferry, and I think we've dined there at least ten times in the last year and a half! Great for Pre-ballet/show, group of friends, romantic-just about everything!4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMMy second time eating at DobbsMy second time eating at Dobbs Ferry before going tot he ballet. I dont usually order the same thing at a restaurant when I return because I do like to try different foods but love the chicken! It was great again.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGood service and food. NothingGood service and food. Nothing extraordinary, but a solid place to stop in for dinner.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat spot for apps or dinnerGreat spot for apps or dinner before a symphony or opera night!4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous BrunchMy friend had the blueberry pancakes with lemon butter and ricotta cheese, and I had the mushroom hash which was topped with an egg and had all kinds of other YUMMY stuff in it -we split both of them so we each got to taste them both and they were FANTASTIC!! Can't wait to go back!4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMHome Made Ricotta!!This was our first time and we loved it. The Ricotta Pizza with the shaved asparagus and arugula was unbelievable..they make thei own Ricotta every morning we were told. Wonderful flavor! Great Beer menu. I will go again absolutely and our waiter was great.
Not noisy and very peaceful...of course we were there for an early lunch before the ballet.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMOn a return visit, we wereOn a return visit, we were again impressed by the quality of the food, and the personal character of the service. The seafood stew that my companion ordered was light and the broth well-flavored, with each of the different fish, crustasceons and shellfish cooked just to a fine point...no mean feat with several different types of seafood! My wedge salad and potato leek soup may sound pedestrian, but were in fact most satisfying. The lettuce was young and tender, and not the usual chunk of "mature" iceberg lettuce that one might fear...and the potato leek soup was of a consistency to allow the flavors to come through, yet still convey the hearty warmth that makes this one of my favorite soups.
A pleasant and tasty meal before the ballet4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSelected Dobbs due to itsSelected Dobbs due to its location close to performing arts. Was delightfully surprised at the yumminess of the food. I had scallops that were as good as any I have had. The roasted beet salad was a disappointment, as it seemed as if the beets were not roasted enough. My dining partner loved her wedge salad and lamb. When we arrived, the waiter asked if we had tickets for the evening, and he served us slow enough for enjoyment, but fast enough to get to our seats before the curtain. I will definitely return!4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSubstantial cuisine ideasSubstantial cuisine ideas and well executed! Never disappointed with the food (ingredients and preparation) or service. Interesting menu choices. one of our first choices in this neighborhood of 1 good restaurant after another.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMVery nice, accomodating waitstaff.Very nice, accomodating waitstaff. Excellent beet salad, tasty, well-prepared entrees.
Only small complaint: we ordered olives which came warm but which were not accompanied by bread, so we asked for some and they brought two small pieces and then, upon request, additional but it was all stale and not very good bread. No excuse for that in the land of the sourdough!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMA great new addition to theA great new addition to the restaurants close to the Opera House and Davies. The bar is a great place to wait for them to start serving after a ballet matinee. Curtious wait staff, good wine and delicious and diverse menu. The address listed on the Open Table site sends customers to a noisy sports bar that is owned by Dobbs Ferry but unrelated to the restaurant. The restaurant entrance is on Gough.3/3/2013 12:00:00 AMThe proximity to the ballet,The proximity to the ballet, symphony, and memorial house makes this a popular restaurant on performance nights. We started with the fried pumpkin which was good. I had the duck ravioli which was also good;but my husband had the shortribs which were fantastic! I'm getting that next time! We ended the meal with the lemon tart which was perfect, shortbread crust and not too sweet with a dark chocolate sauce.12/19/2012 12:00:00 AM
