Diner Reviews
  • "This is a great place for a pre-concert dinner. Its just 2-3 blocks from Symphony Hall, and we've been able to get reservations the last 2 times we went to a concert. It looks like a combination of pre-concert diners and more neighborhood diners. We had their Special for the night--which was a Petrale Sole stuffed with salmon mousse in a white sauce. It was FABULOUS!!! Came with spinach. The fish was cooked to perfection -- not too dry -- and the sauce was wonderful. Service was excellent."

  • "Our cocktails were awful and we should have sent them back. The food was ok but our server was nowhere to be found, we kept having to ask the hostess for help. I would never come back here."

  • "Very convenient with attentive, theatre-time-conscious staff. Nice ambiance -- smallish back room is open and airy feeling due to large (clean!) skylight and atrium garden. Food was good, not great, but very enjoyable."

  • "this & several other restaurants make up a perfect set of great places to dine if you are going to the opera, the symphony or one of the other local theaters in the areas"

  • "Wine was excellent. Everything else was excellent. My only quibble is that the special I ordered - breaded pork chop - was disappointing. Pork piece was thin and deep fried. Nice texture but relatively tasteless. I had a very nice time though as I was having a great talk with my niece."

  • "I came here on a bad night (there was a lot going on in the area and the parking/traffic was awful), by the time all 4 of us in my party arrived it was almost 45min past our reservation.. The staff handled us with patience and kindness and it made a world of difference. Moving on, the food was great ! I loved what I ate and my friends loved what they ate as well. We left this place happy and full ! We will be back."

  • "We were actually here twice over the weekend. Once for drinks and dessert and the other time for a small supper. Both times the service was fantastic. I have to say, the highlight of the two trips was the sweet corn chowder. I can't remember a time when I have enjoyed a soup so much! In fact, I broke a long-standing rule and actually had a 2nd bowl instead of dessert. Yep, I've crossed the two-soup line!"

  • "This place was a good find for pre-opera dining. Food was very good, and portions were surprisingly large. Next time we may just dine off the appetizer menu, since they have a large variety of interesting stuff there. I knocked one star off service because we were seated 20 minutes late (which made it a little close for our 8pm curtain time), even though our table was sitting there made up and ready for a good 5 minutes before they seated us there. Someone had to come tell the hostess to seat us at the table they had set up for us. Perhaps they were training a new hostess? Our waitress was good, and she did rush things for us when we told her about our curtain time, so we ended up making the opera with a few minutes to spare."

  • "The best meal out in a long time! First time eating at this restaurant. Came here to celebrate our anniversary. We are definitely coming back, again."

  • "An excellent choice for dining before a performance! Our pastas were superb and the service was excellent. We will be back soon!"

  • "This was the ONLY place near Van Ness and Hayes that provided us with an eating experience worth remembering. The waiters were not rushed; the space was not 'squeezed'; the food was well prepared; the ambiance was relaxed, but not like the Grove across the street. This was truly the best dining experience, especially for the price that we have found in SF. Much better than Absinthe or Hayes Street Grill."

  • "We discovered a new (for us) dining spot in the Hayes Valley area of SFO. Named Dobbs Ferry for the Westchester, NY town on the Hudson River. It was an excellent choice: there were 3 of us, each ordering different, delectable meals. The beet salad was extraordinary as were the halibut, mushroom ravioli and meatballs. We'll go back the next time we visit."

  • "I would have recommended this place solely on the strength of its terrific food, but the service and the lengths they went to to surprise and delight us were just amazing. As far as the service goes, this place is in a class by itself. What a find!"

  • "Last minute reservation that turned out to be a happy surprise. The wait staff was excellent. The service was exceptional but not stuffy. We really enjoyed the personal service that had just the right balance of respectful conversation. The food was hot and well-proportioned. The arancini was to die for!"

  • "Seated on time with reservation. Excellent spot for dining if you have tickets for a shop. Courtesy when greeted and courtesy when seated and served. GM present at all times and greets you at your table, a nice touch. Food was brought timely, tasty, hot and delicious. Done in plenty of time before show started. Highly recommend and rates right with other highly touted restaurants in the immediate area."

  • "We had a drink and a bite at the bar, then dinner at a table also in the bar area. The food was great; the staff were prompt and efficient; the atmosphere was lively without being overwhelming. They got us off to the opera on time, despite some of our party arriving late. Overall, a great experience. We will definitely come back for more."

  • "Great pre theater find. The staff was great at reminding us of the time we had left toward the end of our meal and paced us well. Soup, salad, entrees were fabulous! Creative seasonal menu will keep us coming back!"

  • "Made a last min reservation and was pleasantly surprised. Had a lovely dinner, great atmosphere, friendly service, reasonably priced, what more could you ask for!"

  • "Another wonderful pre-theater dinner--everything was so yummy, we loved the carbonara pizza and the orcchiette pasta."

  • "Food was quite good - incredibly delicious smoked trout brushetta; just enough pasta with chicken parmesan; friend's rigatoni was flavourful. Very nice pineapple ricotta cheesecake. The only downside was the evening's hostess - she seemed to really not care that we were first timers. She would rather have had me sit at the bar and wait for my friend instead of being seated - we had early reservations and there were plenty of open tables. I opted for the table."

  • "We keep coming back to Dobbs Ferry whenever we want to have a special dinner before opera or symphony. We did the Dine About Town menu and were not disappointed. The corn soup was terrific and not too creamy, which we liked. The short ribs were so tender they just easily came apart and went well with polenta. The vegetable lasagna was also well prepared. Overall, another terrific experience."

  • "The food was wonderful with some great choices. Service was exceptional: they really paid attention to getting our order to us so that we would be able to be on time for an 8 o'clock performance at the opera house. We will definitely return to Dobbs Ferry!"

  • "We're always looking for places to eat before a symphony concert, or Opera performance, so Dobb's Ferry fits the bill; good food, prompt service, and location. We'll be back."

  • "Everything about the evening -- starting with the fabulous dirty martini -- was impeccable. We were there 5:30-ish in order to make a 7:30pm show, so the noise level may increase as the evening progresses. But it was a treat not to have to yell at my dining companions to make myself heard. Lovely staff. Delicious food."

  • "Outstanding service and setting outshine the food which was okay but not a place foodies would search out. I would recommend this for a bite before a Civic Center performance but not venue to put on a list of top bistros."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • " Great service, close to Norse and all civic center performance places. Good food - not trying to be too perfect or precious. We liked it."

  • "Dobbs has been on our short list of pre-Symphony spots now for a couple of years. We had an early reservation to allow us to spend some quality time with another couple. The first table offered was very close to the kitchen and bathroom path so we asked to move. It took a minute but they accommodated nicely. Three of us tried the Dine About Town menu and were very pleased. The smoked trout second course was very good, in particular. One salmon dish from the main menu was a tad overcooked. Desserts were tasty and very shareable, if that's a word. The wine list is not expansive but we found good choices. All in all a nice dinner that allowed us to not rush to our Symphony seats."

  • "Everyone was on his/her toes! Our primary server was a young man from Southern California (Orange County). He was engaging, friendly, helpful, and provided great service."

  • "The way we were greet at the door was excellent. The room is beautiful. The service was good, and our waitress was very friendly and efficient. Unfortunately, the food was not good. I ordered the stuffed shell, which had WAY TOO MUCH garlic. It was a real disappointment. Therefore, this is a good place for a drink but a bad place for food."

  • "No better way to start an evening than to see a top Mixologist, EVANS, you lost track of. That was the 1st great thing about walking in to Dobb's. Top it off with the amazing Must Have Cocktail: FORBIDDEN FRUIT & the fun, friendly atmosphere. Went for Dine-About-Town and the owner Scott, gregarious and gracious, came over to introduce himself. Asked what we ordered and was bummed we (lacking in adventurousness) both ordered similar meals, sent over the unbelievable pork parmesan on the house. The short ribs/polenta OMG! A delicious white wine to go with our fried artichokes & buratta and an even better red with the main course. The chocolate cake & zeppoles are NOT TO BE MISSED. I will be back. Again and again. An amazing experience."

  • "This was my first time at Dobb's Ferry and I can't wait to go back. The service was great and the food was creative and tasty. We shared an app, and each had a salad and entree, and neither of us could finish the entree because we were so full. Great portions and super tasty!"

  • "This was a new place for us, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Food is fresh and attractively prepared. My friends had the shrimp wedge and loved it. I had the daily special lemon pancakes. Delicious. And their coffee is wonderful! We will be returning to this restaurant."

  • "We were drawn to this place because it's named for a town near where I grew up and we've happily returned. The food is simply fantastic. The servers are always cheerful and the ambiance is comfortable but really the food is the best. "

  • "Once again the the service and food were outstanding, as they have been in the past. It was great to be greeted by the GM and to meet one of the co-owner the night of our S. F. Symphony. Thanks again and we look forward to our next dinner at Dobbs Ferry."

  • "Dinner at Dobbs Ferry was fun. The service was wonderful, but the dinner main courses were quite limited. I had a chicken dish I thought would be crispy, like the one served at Zuni and other places that pride themselves on their roasted chicken. This one had the skin removed and was effectively braised. There was way too much of it, and I'd have rather had less meat with a more striking look and taste. The trout bruschetta was special, but the grilled asparagus showed no signs of the grill, and the flavors didn't pop at all. It was delicate and tasty, but no energy. Dessert was panna cotta, which, when it is good floats off the spoon. This didn't. Again, as the rest of the meal, it was good, but no euphoria."
