  • Bad scallops
    disappointed
    Dined on 11/7/2014
The scallops had a metallic taste and were inedible. This is a great disappointment as I've been going there for years for their scallops. According to the web, this means the scallops have been treated with a chemical (STP) -- either because they aren't fresh or the packer is using the chemical to make the scallops take on more water (heavier = more expensive). Hopefully Django will return to offering fresh scallops or to ordering dry-packed scallops. Will now have to find a new restaurant.

My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner at Django. The atmosphere seems a bit upscale, but I felt comfortable being there in jeans. There is no cork fee, which was a major draw for us. I hope patrons remember to tip extra for wine service even if bringing in their own bottle. The best part of our dining experience was our server. He was knowledgeable and friendly, and his timing was perfect for each course. We greatly enjoyed the cheese and charcuterie plate, I can't wait to go back and try other combinations. I had the beef bourguignon, the meat was cooked to perfection, and the sauce was nicely balanced.

I've heard they're known for their burgers but I went with the seafood crepes and they were really very good! They have a great selection of cheeses and little housemade thin, crispy crackers that are super flavorful and savory. I'd go again!

I was so looking forward to a wonderful evening entertaining clients during our visit. Disappointment came early when, after I took the time to make reservations days ahead of our visit, the hostess wanted to seat us at one of the worst table locations in the restaurant. She did graciously move us after I asked. When seated, we were greeted by a server that gave us a faint hello, no smile and an immediate "what do you want to drink." No info on specials, the wine list. It took 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive - and my heart and hopes for a great evening fell with each passing minute. While the service did improve, the smile didn't. Thankfully, the food was amazing. However, I will most likely go elsewhere for my next client dinner.

My wife and I ate at Django after a downtown art show. We've eaten there a couple of times before, and as before, it was great. We arrived 30 minutes early for our reservation, but were seated immediately. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and engaging, and delivered our courses in perfect timing. All of the food was fantastic, and we had a great time. In addition to the great food and service, the cool, casual atmosphere and reasonable pricing makes Django a great choice for downtown Des Moines dining.

New menu is very hard to read with a small font and crowded menu. A lot of the variety is gone from their offerings and quality of food was not up to what we have come to expect there. Will be canceling a future reservation as this was not enjoyable nor a value for our dollar. Too bad, it was such a top spot in Des Moines.

We celebrated a very special occasion at Django. I was surprised how easy it was to reserve a table on the same day via online. The reservation confirmation came in almost immediately. The appetizer and entrees were simply awesome. I would say it was well-worth the money. We also ordered an alcoholic beverage but I was not too impressed with quantity vs. money ratio. But the taste was also very good! Overall, I recommend Django but be sure that it is a bit pricer restaurant compared to other regular restaurants.

Noise level terrible. Had to ask to be moved to a different table so I could converse with the wife. Complained to the waitress about the quantity of wine in my $10 glass and she said 60z was the usual. Looked like 4 oz. and that wine I could have bought at World Market for $14 per bottle. My wife's grilled salmon was ok, came on top of a large glop of mashed potatoes, with 3 sprigs of asparagus. My seafood Bouillaboise was too salty and the fish over cooked. Finally, the waitress seemed "chilly" with us the rest of the night after my comment about the wine. Next time I celebrate an anniversary with my wife it won't be at Django's. Way over priced for what we received.

We come here every few months when visiting DSM. Food is excellent, with a good variety of choices. Service has always been very good when we have been here, but most of our visits have been pre-concert before the restaurant gets really busy. The place can get a bit noisy as it is popular with large groups on weekends. Not overwhelming, but you wouldn't come here for a quiet conversation. Will continue to return.

Our first experience at this restaurant all food and wine was excellent but we had a $250 gift card that we spent $150 of and gave a $30 tip on the tab but the server failed to bring us the card after finalizing the bill. Awkward! I had to go and ask for it back so I wouldn't loose the $70 remaining?!? 2nd visit with a large group and byob wine. Excellent service but the food was all over cooked, steaks, seafood, etc. Most obvious, the truffles on the signature steak. Either they were left off or they were over heated (truffles loose their flavor when heated!) 3rd visit, $40 bottle of really bad wine, tried a $55 bottle with even more disappointment! Again, signature steak with no truffle flavor... 4th visit? Only if someone wants it!

Wonderful restaurant. Waitress was excellent and helpful on selections. She didn't rush us which made for a very relaxing evening. This restaurant lets you bring in your own wine with no corkage fee which is a nice option but they also have a great wine list. Our meal was delicious with a nice sized portion and the salmon was cooked perfectly. Our seating was very close to a couple dining next to us and we could easily hear their conversation and I'm sure they could hear ours. A little more space would be nice! Overall, highly recommend!!

Django does not have corkage fee... ever! Their menu prices are a bit on the high side, but with the no corkage fee, it makes dining out an affordable experience. Of course, if you take advantage of this, don't bring in a bottle of Yellow Tail, bring in something nice. The food is wonderful, the service is great, the bartenders are top notch, and their Happy Hour is a great deal.

My boyfriend began to reach for the water bottle at the table to fill up his glass, but by the time he'd started to lift his hand the waiter was there filling his cup and giving us a new bottle for the table. Just one example of his serving prowess. If I remembered his name I'd put it down instantly, all I know is that he is a hero of the service industry.

We love coming to Django for their outstanding food, unique cocktails and great service. It is our restaurant of choice when in Des Moines and we have been there at least 8 times now. However, the noise level makes it very difficult to have any conversation. It didn't help that we were next to a really loud table of 8 who had been drinking for awhile before we got there. Since we go to Django when dropping off or visiting our son at Drake, not being able to have a conversation is really beginning to be a drawback. It is in an old building and is a very pretty space, but I wish something could be done to address this. At one point my son said, I can see your lips moving but I can't hear you! But again, the food is awesome!

Menu was OK - nothing to exciting. Noise level was almost unbearable - the acoustics are not the best so when crowded the noise level can be more like a bar than and nice dining locations. There was also a table of six near by that was overly loud, with one person having an EXTREMELY annoying and EXTRA loud cackle - this person's self-awareness was non existent! Do not expect Django to be quiet but this night it was over the top.
