Another fun, vibrant with fantastic food Jose Garces place. THe food was wonderful. Interesting, eclectic, delicious, well prepared. Service was good but at times plates were removed a bit too quickly. Noise level is high but we could still hear each other. The mix of people was great and hopefully that will continue. Much better than the standard Mexican affair and the small plates are such a great idea for Mexican food. Hope to return soon.

    Dined on 9/4/2008
While we enjoyed the food and service, good value and found it to be a festive atmosphere, we found the atmosphere to a bit of a disappointment relative to Amada and Tinto, the latter of which is big favorite of ours. Distrito seems more in the vein of a Stephen Starr venue than a what is typically a more refined and less formulaic rendition of Jose Garces. Perhaps this is the goal given the University City location and targeting what is likely to be a younger crowd. However, we'd opt for Tinto or other spots in the future.

I have to say the location décor is like blend of Continnetal and El Vez. It’s a fun place but is border line in the too much and exuberant decoration. We had the Tacos Carnitas, Queso Fundido, Ceviche de Camarones, Platanos con Crema, and the Chilango. Food quality and the all ingredients used are top notch, great taste. Overall: the food is great. Service is terrific and our waitress was sweet, no rush, and very professional. But the food portions are ridiculous small. I know the concept is similar to a tapas place and I am a big fan of Amada (despite their prices will make any Spaniard to cry) and I visit Barcelona twice a year for business so I eat a lot of tapas. I have to say their portions are by far smallest tapas or dishes I h

Jose Garces has done it again. This is a terrific spot, and while maybe not a perfect fit for the college crowd, will do very well at Penn! The decor would be tacky if not done so well, and the food was exquisite. We would have expected nothing less from our favorite Philly chef!

Small plates are great, but some of these were ridiculously small (the mole). The waiter was not really interested in explaining what any of the dishes were or when one order would not be enough for 4 people to share. Loved the seats in the booths, although we did have to ask to have our table changed from a table in the center of an otherwise uncrowded room to one of the 3 empty booths.

The food was just what you would expect from Jose Garces. If you love Tinto and Amada, Distrito is a must. The ambience is fun and festive and the service was superb (thanks Francesca!). I would highly recommend Distrito for an exciting night out. The tasting menu is worth every cent as each dish is more exciting then the last. The decor is unmatched and fits the scene well without taking away from the outstanding food. It's difficult to pick a favorite dish, but our top three were the Hamachi "Estilo Og", Queso Fundido, and the Carne Asada. When finished off with their decadent churros, the meal is a hard one to beat. Distrito will not disappoint.

We had a lot of fun here, adn the staff was very thoughtful and concerned. One member of our party was handicapped and needed a walker to enter and be seated and they were caring and considerate. Two other diners with us had non-overlapping food allergies, and they were very sensitive. WHen they brought a dish with the "wrong" ingredients, they quickly identified the problem and whisked it away without fuss. Generally, though, they avoided doing this, by working with us ahead of time on the order. We enjoyed our evening and did it in an inexpensive way. There is no need to overeat, and two or three small dishes per person was just perfect.

Great new restaurant, which would suit a casual lunch or equally a fun night out. The food is very good and don't miss out on the churros for dessert. The only thing to keep an eye on is the booze, their margaritas are quite pricey and can quickly run up the bill. In fact the margaritas were about the only thing that wasn't outstanding--they were just ok, and rather light on the tequila.

Probably the best Mexican food I've had outside Mexico. Menu was carefully, pssibly brillantly conceived, and the food managed to be original, academic and recognizable as Mexican at the same time. The servers were very nice, knowlegable and attentive, although there were times where we waited too long, e.g. for addtional tortillas. Restaurant was attractive, but not special. I imagine that the noise level was supposed to reflect the energy of the Districto Federal (Mexico City), it did that only too well. Even in Mexico City, it is possible to speak with your dinner companion without shouting.

Distrito is now the best food in the city, and our new favorite restaurant. We've eaten there three times, and everything we've had has been good. The hamachi tacos, the chocolate cake, and the churros are to die for. We've had the hamachi all three times, and all three times it was incredible. Amazing consistency of cuisine. The decor is a quirky but amusing mix of mexican wreslters, diner displays, and wicker booths. Drinks are tasty, but a bit expensive. Food is cheap for high end cuisine.

Have had better mexican food at other places. They decorate your food alot and thus the quantity goes away. Service was great and I absolutely loved the dessert. They not only look and taste great, but as soon as they hit the table, they give off this wonderful scent and every dish brings something new. The drinks are amazing. My only problem, the margarita prices. $45 for a fresh fruit pitcher is a little steep, although the drink was very good we only got about 3 glasses TOTAL out of it. DISTRITO also provides great service. From the kind hostess, to the helpful server, and the quick buser, there are constant people around to give you the ultimate dining experience.

  • The food is a contemporary
    OpenTable Diner Since 2002VIP
    Dined on 8/16/2008
The food is a contemporary twist on Mexican cuisine, generally favoring tapas-sized plates. Two to three plates per person would be sufficient. My wife and I tried the tasting menu, and all was tasty and elegantly presented. The service was attentive. The decor could be described as an illicit liason between Tijuana and Miami. It is loud between the crowd and the music. The only draw back was that the mixed drinks were somewhat pricey, although they were suitably strong. For the student budget -- this place is near UPenn -- I'd suggest sticking to the cervezas. When school is in session, I imagine that this place will be hopping. My folks would hate this place -- and that's a compliment.

Our server was fun, helpful, and knew the menu in detail. Their patience, cheerfulness, and recommendations made our evening. Our food was as vibrant as the atmosphere. With just enough essence of Mexico, and the epiphany inducing combination of discovered and classic flavor that Garces' chefs are renowned for. Coupled with the mariachi's song in the background, and the kooky decor, we were happily lost. The combination of professional service, a refreshing environment, and unmatched cuisine made going out a welcomed adventure again.
