  • "The food and ambiance at District Commons was delicious! My only suggestion is to tone down the service. The waiter and staff were taking away our bread plates before we even finished and we were pushed to order the pretzel roll item by our waiter. The pretzel roll was good, but even before we were done eating it, the waitstaff tried to take the roll away. I understand that the restaurant is busy and they need to get diners in and out, but it was unnerving how aggressive they were. "

  • "Everything we ate we delicious. Also really enjoyed the District Old Fashion cocktail. Will make the trip back just to get some more of those oysters with blue cheese slaw. Waiter was great and let us take our time while being there whenever we needed him. Only downside was the sound of the dishwasher coming through the wall next to our table."

  • "We had a group of 6 for dinner for my mother's 68th birthday. Although the food was good (mussels were really tasty) our server Jasmime, maybe it was Jocelyn, didn't seem the least interested in working or waiting on our table. She tried to spend so little time at our table that on a few occasions we didn't even finish getting in our drink orders before she was gone. She'd hear one item ordered and leave before anyone could say a word. There were also several instances when water glasses and drinks were nearly finished and she didn't even think to ask if anyone needed anything. We'll go back for drinks, but probably stick to the bar."

  • "Food was creative and very good but prices are high for the level of service received. Lots of service staff running around but very misguided. Appetizer placed on table but no small plates. Dinners were incomplete and items came much later. Shrimp with grits but no grits. Oh here they come. Dessert came but no flatware. Had to ask for check and then waited a while before anyone took it. Very noisy environment. Waiter behind my guest dropped a tray of glasses that were clearly overstacked. Service staff needs much better training and better systems."

  • "I usually go here when I am meeting someone for lunch, it's in a convenient location in Foggy Bottom. Has a great selection of beers. Food is pretty good, too, although a bit pricey in my opinion. Service is consistently very good. It's a nice neighborhood bar, good for a business lunch or drinks and food after work."

  • "This is a vibrant and lovely restaurant with tons of promise in the menu but it failed to deliver in terms of food. We dined there preceding theater at the Kennedy Center and at 6 on a Saturday, it was hopping. The menu is moderately priced and we were told that the meatloaf was great and large enough for 2+ so we shared that plus 2 salads. The salads were fine but uninspiring and the meatloaf, which arrived only lukewarm, was just ok - too sweet and not particularly tasty. The pretzel baguette was definitely the highlight of our meal so make sure that you try that with it's tasty butter spread. I would return but mostly because of proximity and vibe - food wise, it needs to do more to entice me back."

  • "This was my 5th or 6th time to District Commons. As always, food was excellent! Waitress made multiple mistakes: asked for 2 glasses of wine, she brought us a whole bottle; after she went away with the wine bottle, our 2 glasses of wine were not given to us until we were almost finished with our meal. We had to ask her to refill our water glasses twice. She also made of point of "recommending" more expensive things on the menu, than what we wanted to order."

  • "I work near here so I frequent quite often. I'm usually a fan of their entrees but the quality seems to have slid in the recent past. I had their ribeye and it was 1/2 grits. The scalloped potatos were good, but when I didn't want the side salad they offered nothing to replace it with. It was an extremely disappointing $27 meal. The swordfish was also slightly dry and not worth the price. You could have gotten better food at a much-loved cafeteria. Our waitress was exceptionally slow and forgot my soft drink."

  • "I have eaten at District Commons many times and always enjoyed it. This time the food was quiet disappointing. The special rock fish with lemon butter and lobster sauce was not so good. The fish was over cooked and the lobster cold. The ice cream dessert was like a common sunday and not up to the more creative standards I am used to at this restaurant. That said, we went early and were able to get a quiet table in the back so we could talk which was a huge plus in this crowded, noisy and jumping establishment. The wait staff was excellent and we were well attended as in the past. I just wonder if there is a new chef in the house that is not living up to the old standards."

  • "Busiest work week of the year, but didn't want to miss my good friend, who's only here every 2 years, so we met at District Commons, in my building. Figured I'd pop down for a quick dinner and a catch-up, then back to work. As it turned out, spent 2+ hours. Catch of the day grilled to perfection. Fun southern cocktails (try the Rob Roy). Truly excellent service. Relaxed, but still sophisticated and special. The back booths are my favorite spot -- tad quieter back there. Always a group in that cool, private back room with a street view (note to self). Only restaurant that's ever called me to confirm a reservation. Hostess says one of the owners is the chef and wants to plan each night's food. They're serious about good dining at DC."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by how nice a meal we had at the Commons. The menu was varied enough for all of us, and we enjoyed our brunch very much. The waiter did not rush us, and was happy to let us sit and talk. One had fish, two had eggs and the last had a large salad; all items were well prepared and tasty. I was very happy to see my eggs come with fruit and avocado, instead of the usual potatoes and bread, which are available for those who do want that. I am sure it gets busy at night or on the weekends, but make a reservation and check it out."

  • "We had a group of 6. They put us at a really nice table in the back which was ideal for intimate conversation. Great dining experience with excellent food just before a Kennedy Center event. Portions are a bit small, but the food was excellent all around. The only thing is that we had told them we absolutely needed to be out by a certain time, and we were actually out the door 20 minutes later which put a bit more stress on the time. Valet parking for $10 is definitely worth it and works well."

  • "Though we had a reservation and 2 of 3 people were there at the time of our reservation, they reguired that the 3rd person be there before we could be seated, and then when he did we still had to wait 20 more minutes. I have been there a handful of times and in the past the food was great - this time it wasn't (and the soup was scalding hot and burnt)."

  • "I invited a friend to join me for lunch here during Restaurant Week. We were allowed to order just about anything off the a la carte menu for the 3-course prix fixe meal. It was ALL delicious and prepared with special touches. We really felt as though special attention had been paid to our food. We ordered fish -- mine was cedar plank salmon and my friend ordered cod for our entrees. The sauces were terrific and the veggies inventive. In addition, my starter salad was so fresh, it tasted as though the greens had just been picked! Our server was friendly, efficient and gave us good advice when ordering. She was always there when needed. I was impressed and will definitely return to District Commons for another great meal!"

  • "This is my second time eating here. On both occasions I had shrimp & grits. It was absolutely delicious. The grits are more stone-ground, so they have lots of texture, which is necessary because the sauce for the shrimp is very rich and plentiful. I think they put too many scallions on the dish when they dress it. A friend had crab cake and french fries. Both were tasty. Fries were served with a creamy vinegar sauce I could have eaten all day. Prior to our entrees, the table shared biscuits and sausage gravy. The biscuits were superb. I liked the taste of the gravy, but thought that it became thick and cold rather quickly. I wanted it to be warmer and thinner. (However, this did not stop me from eating it.) I will definitely return. Loud"

  • "Our server was inattentive and sloppy. He spilled coffee everywhere, brought the wrong "specialty" drinks, and left us without water. We had to repeatedly ask other servers for refills. We sat by the service station, and could hear him repeatedly swearing about the other members of his wait staff, and slamming cupboards and groaning loudly. At one point he growled as well. When the meal arrived, dishes were wrong and auctioned off to the wrong members of the table. The food was lukewarm, too salty and overpriced. I will not go back."

  • "I like the bar at District Commons - lots of people and fun. There were 3 of us at our table and we all loved our dinners, One had rock fish and salad (perfect), another had seared scallops, and a third had filet of trout - we were all very happy with the meals. I considered ordering a dessert but they all seemed too big, and I was right. Walking out we spotted some people with Sundaes - they were ice cream store size; too large for after a meal."

  • "I went to District Common for the first time with three friends. We all ordered very different entrees and all were delicious and the portions were generous. The wine list was impressive. Our waiter was excellent and attentive, but not hovering. We lost track of time and needed our check quickly to get to a performance and he accommodated us. My only concern was the noise level in the restaurant. As the tables around us filled up, it became difficult to hear my friends seated across from me."
