When it first opened the restaurant seemed a great addition to the neighborhood. However after many times at district commons i would like to see changes to the menu. The salads are underwhelming the entree sizes are uneven and everything is a separate charge. The ice cream deserts are good but the baked ones are off the mark. The restaurant is pretty and designed for a business crowd. The menu is not innovative but it could be.

Just a reliable good place to eat with a nice feel to it. Have been there for both business lunches and dinners, as well as with my family (wife and teenagers), and for brunch. It pretty much works for everything.

My trout was excellent and my friend's salmon was also very good. We were seated at the window with a filmy drape between us and adjacent tables. We escaped what was noisy in the central area.

fun place to have dinner prior to a show at the Kennedy Center. Food is great, service is very good and the menu is varied. Busy place so great vibe. You can valet your car here at dinner, walk a few short blocks to the metro and catch the Kennedy Center shuttle to the KC. Return on same shuttle and retrieve your car from District Commons. Really liked the Duck I had this last visit and as always the mussels were great.

  • Ok Food, Poor Service

I took a group of six for a late brunch. Our food was ok, except the Yukon potato hash, which tasted like overmicrowaved frozen potatoes. The true disappointment was the service. We ordered the pretzel baguette. We received dinner rolls sprinkled with pretzel salt and served with mustard. Apparently they ran out, but instead of telling us they sent this substitute. They also ran out of syrup, but served one of our party french toast without it. When she inquired, they brought her agave nectar. It was disappointing enough for the restaurant to run out of what we ordered. Not being told was just unnecessary.

I've been here several times and always loved the food. This time, though, the food was mediocre at best. My husband's steak was drenched in oil and kind of flavorless, while my fish of the day left the skin on (a horrible food trend) that left it tasting awfully fishy. Neither of us could finishe our entrees. Our server was attentive and the cocktails good, but the food really left a great deal to be desired. It's too expensive for the food quality we received. I don't think we'll return.

Overall, the food was quite good (we came back for a second dinner), the service is very friendly, and reasonably good but not excellent, the place is lively, noisy and filled mostly with young adults, some families and some tourists. At about $100 per couple, assuming one drink each, its about as good as you should expect at that price.

the staff was very nice. The service was rather fast, and the food was good. Nothing spectacular. The pricing is a bit off, given that a really tiny salad cost the same as a full plate of mussels...

I really liked the food! The service also top notch! And, I have no problems in recommending this place to others. The only draw back was the noise. It's a trend at restaurants now to high open ceilings. Unfortunately, that makes for a loud noisy room which, in turn, means that I had to yell at the person sitting across from to be heard. So, great place but be ready for the noise level.

The steak tar tar is the best I've ever had, gazpatcho was also amazing! We came in late, also had an infant with us and the staff was very accomodating and welcoming. Several employees came by to touch up table and make sweet comments. Cocktail menu had good selection, can't remember specifics of what we drank but the three we tried were not a let down. Valet parking is a little edgy...as tesstaurant is located right at Washington circle you have to stop the car right at turnoff. (Maybe we did it wrong??) Overall we saw a great bar scene with big bar and plenty of TVs for sports etc. Very vibrant feel with great friendly service.

I met a colleague recently for a working lunch at District Commons. On our arrival, we were seated promptly at a two-top and immediately greeted by our waitress, who offered us water and described the daily specials. The ambient noise was just right for a working lunch, allowing us to discuss business without having to raise our voices or worry that we were disturbing the parties to either side of us. The food was outstanding. I had the Shrimp & Grits and look forward to ordering it again. My colleague had the Grilled Norwegian Salmon and spoke highly of it.

This was my second visit to District Commons at 22nd and Penn. Both times were for lunch. The food is very good, and the menu offers ample variety. The wine selection is good with prices ranging from reasonable to high. The decor of the restaurant is bright and open with window views of Washington Circle. It is also spacious, so there's no feeling of cramped tables or diners on top of one another. The staff is welcoming and attentive. Definitely worth a visit, with reservations recommended.

Get the pretzel bread.....trust me! We had a variety of soups, salads and entrees. Good vegetarian choices (and the waiter was knowledgeable enough to make recommendations). The duck entree was dry and the bed of quinoa was extremely dry. The meatloaf was a real comfort food. The red lentil soup was very good as was the sliced asparagus salad. Good selection of desserts but the blueberry/lemon and boston cream pie were a bit dry

During a 10 day visit to DC we arrived 15 min. early for a 7pm reso & asked if we could sit at the bar. Our bartender greeted us with menus, but never came back to take the order. We were seated promptly at 7. We shared a tomato mozzarella salad (good). I had the gazpacho (excellent) and the meatloaf (awful). It was a monstrous portion that tasted like very salty Kraft BBQ sauce and it was served over mushy green beans. I ate a few bites, but no one asked me why I didn't eat it. My husband had lentil soup (so-so) and duck (excellent). For dessert, we shared chocolate cake w/ice cream (mediocre). Our server said we'd be back, but she was wrong. As a bonus - she took the liberty of ordering my martini w/blood orange vodka - yuck.

The food at District Commons is always great, and the cocktails are superb. Service is usually pretty good, too - but this time it took forever for our server to get to us, then forever to get out drinks. The manager noticed the problem, jumped in himself to help with our order, and even comped us the slow cocktails. We really appreciated it - his willingness to fix things more than made up for the earlier glitches.

First time actually participating in DC Restaurant week we picked this place because we walked by once and liked the decor the large windows and the view out to the street and figured we'd give it a shot. We made reservations for 7pm on a Saturday got a follow up call earlier that day to confirm and was seated right away once we arrived. Coming from one bar already it was only right we kept the party going so we ordered Manhattans..they were amazing..in fact I couldn't finish mine! Our waitress Chris... good guy...great customer service..he took care of us. Chilli was great app, 1st time eating DUCK it was amazing (mouth waters just thinking about it) $100 well spent..good food..great conversation!

Went for RW. Decided not to order off the RW menu because I had plans for dessert at another venue. I could have ordered off of the RW menu and been just as happy as I'd been w/ just having my entree. I liked that the entire menu (sans the recession proof items) were on the RW menu and that the portion sizes were resonable. There are many places that limit portion sizes and options, but this was not the case for District Commons (and the reason I selected this restaurant). I had the shark for dinner and enjoyed it. My friends had the shrimp and grits. I think they would have licked their plates clean if they weren't in public. It was my second time at the restaurant and I enjoyed it. Would definitely dine there again.

We went during DC Restaurant Week, and it was great service, and the presentation of the food was beautiful, but there was an issue. I ordered the kimchi pork chop, and it was very tasty, but I noticed the pork wasn't cooked all the way through. If it was steak, I woukdnt have minded, but pork is a different story. I sent it back, and it took them a long time for them to return it to me. By the time it was returned, everyone in my party had finished their meal. When they finally brought back the porkchop, it was still purple inside. Sigh. The kimchi on it was delicious though

I originally had a reservation for two, but my friend had to cancel. I was seated at a table adjacent to the door leading to the outdoor seating area. EVERY time the door was opened, I got a wind gust that blew my hair into my face and probably cooled my food faster than it should have been cooled. I know restaurants need to maximize the number of tables, but managers need to sit at tables and put themselves in the customer's position.

The portions were small. Some of the food was very dissapointing. The meatloaf lunch contained of dried out meatloaf, with green beans that were either canned or vastly overcooked. The burger, while tasty, was the size of the sliders served at other restuarants. The root beer float on the desert list was very good and very generous.

My wife and I enjoyed a Restaurant Week lunch here, one of our favorites in Foggy Bottom. She had the chowder and salmon, and I the chili and blackened tilapia, all delicious. We ordered sparkling water, which is served out of a refillable bottle for $4. We didn't pay attention to the refills, similar to refills on iced tea. When the check came, however, we were charged for two bottles. I find it odd that the server did not ask us, "Would you like another bottle of sparkling water?" The other oddity was the note on the bottom of the check: "Prices do not reflect gratuity. We suggest the 20% standard". I usually tip at least 20% of the total bill (including tax). I used to feel that was a bit generous; now it is considered a minimum?
