Diner Reviews
  • "Stopped in with my family. Wanted a very light meal. I settled on the ham and biscuits as well as a couple pretzel breads. Very good food. Definitely want to try again."

  • "I have been here a few times with coworkers for lunch and I have never been disappointed! The candied deviled eggs are amazing as well as the crabcake sandwich. The ambience is so sexy...I love the decor and high ceiling. The service is always good too."

  • "It's a big restaurant with many tables and a roomy bar. We were there on a Sunday when it was not so busy, but, according to my husband,, it can get to be very lively. I thought the food was very fine with portions just the right size. The pretzel bread served with garlic butter was special and very good. we went pre-theater which was fun and the server was cognizant of our time constraints. Wine list by the glass was commendable. Can't wait to return!"

  • "The food was great and the service excellent. Our waiter, Chris, was super nice and efficient. We loved everything about this place."

  • "District Commons has always been a favorite for lunch, but this was the first time going for weekend brunch. There were seven of us, and we were seated in the middle of the restaurant. Got a bit noisy, hard to talk for the first part of our brunch. Then it got a bit quieter. Everyone ordered something different, and most of us enjoyed the food. My nephew, who is a beer aficianado, had a great time ordering from the extensive beer menu, even though his first two choices were not available. The usual blood orange mimosas did not appear to be blood orange. The virgin mary was far too spicy. Most of us agreed that we would have enjoyed a few more omelette and egg choices on the menu for brunch. Staff always so friendly and helpful."

  • "Came here for a nice dinner for my boyfriend's parents. It was a great meal. Only thing is the waiter brought us the wrong wine, 3 times. Not really normal or expected. Finally got it all figured out, but probably shouldn't have happened. Other than that the food was delicious and the menu had a great variety."

  • "It is close from my work, and that was the reason for choosing this resto for lunch with colleagues. But the service was slow that hindsight we could have gone a bit far to find a different place. Very noisy and hard to hold conversation."

  • "Okay, sure, the pretzel bread is a revelation. Who knew that mustard butter would be a thing that would be so good? I'm more impressed with the carefully made cocktails. Nothing oversized or weird, just a solid list of interesting drinks. We enjoyed the shaved asparagus salad with burrata. The lentils were a little more soupy than I wanted on a hot summer night. Service was excellent, splitting dishes that we were going to share and checking in when we needed."

  • "Best dishes: brick chicken with mashed potatoes and amazing au jus, garam masala lamb shanks with couscous, and their Voted #1 DC meatloaf with mushroom gravy. YUMMO"

  • "We enjoyed our visit to District Commons and it was super convenient to leave our car with the valet, take the Kennedy Center shuttle and return to pick up our car! The only negatives were that the tables in the middle were extremely small. I noticed that some of the larger tables and booths had two people seated at them, so I guess the key is to request those tables. The other issue was that it took three requests before we actually received the pretzel bread. We got the bread at the end of the meal and felt it would have been a nice gesture if they had comp'ed the bread - but they didn't."

  • "We came to District Commons for a quick dinner before a Kennedy Center show. The waitress was very accommodating and paced the meal so we could get in and out in an hour. The beer list is fantastic and the specialty cocktails interesting. I had a gin and fresh lime juice cocktail that was wonderful - tart and refreshing. No complaints on the food - beet salad, asparagus salad, duck, skirt steak, mussels and flatbread were all very good. The duck gets extra kudos for being well-cooked and not too fatty. The pretzel bread and mustard butter are a nice way to start the dinner. Overall a very nice experience. We will be back."

  • "This was a fine meal. thankfully we were there right at the beginning of the dinner hour, as the place is HOPPING most evenings and the decible level becomes nearly impossible to bear. The food was fine (trout, saldas, soup and dessert). Service was fine. The hostess was a bit off-putting -- I think she prefers to see that folks are coming to the bar as opposed to an early dinner. that being said, when the magic 5:30 time arrived, a different host showed us to our table. this is a handy place to get to -- Foggy Bottom Metro and right by the GW campus and hospital -- not a dull location!"

  • "We had a great time at District Commons. The service was wonderful and we really appreciated how responsive they were, even offering to draw the curtains to keep the sun out of our eyes (without us even mentioning it!). The pretzel baguette and the white mussels are to die for, and I was tickled pink that they actually gave me the leftover limoncello-thyme sauce from the mussels to take home. Had it on pasta the next day and it was still awesome."

  • "I loved the look and open airy feel of the restaurant and my boyfriend enjoyed the all-American beer list. The service was excellent, especially since we told the server we had to be out by a certain time for a play. She timed everything perfectly! The variety, quality and deliciousness of food will definitely have me coming back to try more dishes. The Grilled Skirt steak was so juicy-everyone's favorite, however my Masala braised lamb shank with couscous was also delectable. The BBQ braised shortribs "burger" was to die for. so good!"

  • "We were very pleased with the the service and food at District Commons. The staff was friendly and the waiter was awesome, making sure that we were served in a timely manner in order to make our 7:30 curtain at the Kennedy Center. Having my cousin from North Dakota with us, we wanted her to experience the seafood here on the east coast. Our selections did not disappoint. The fried oyster appetizer was fabulous. I ordered soft shell crab tempura and she ordered the crab cakes. The waiter hearing us discuss sharing our meals offered to bring them as one crab cake and one tempura soft shell on each plate. Perfect meal!! I also recommend getting the mac and cheese to share. We will be back!!"

  • "all of their food is good. not super vegetarian friendly, and definitely not vegan-friendly, but if you like meat, this place has amazing dishes. and the pretzel appetizer is delicious. don't share, get your own!"

  • "District Commons' location on Washington Circle makes it a great place to meet for a light dinner before performances at the Kennedy Center. The menu is interesting, food is well presented, service is generally good. The noise level can veer toward the energetic, but, especially pre-theater, it's not bad. It's an attractive place and I've had many pleasant meals there."

  • "we went to district commons before going to the kennedy center.. our waiter was chris.. he was excellent… our table of four are pretty interactive.. and he picked up on that right away… and went with the flow… so, if your waiter is chris… tell him the 4 from new jersey say HI… he will know who you mean."

  • "Been here numerous times and the food and service is consistently good. Wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly. If going there pre-theater, mention this and they will get you out in plenty of time iwthout feeling rushed."

  • "Happy hour meets fine dining. Casual atmosphere with terrific menu, cocktail and beer & wine lists. Great for fun meal before Kennedy Center show. Early on a weeknight, there was plenty of activity in the bar area, but also a few families eating in the dining room."

  • "It was the first time for my guest and myself. We both were impressed and pleased from the reception to the waiter. The seating requested by the window was great. Love the design and decor. Oysters excellent. Asparagus salad not what we expected. Both agreed we'd definitely go again!"

  • "The salads are really good, but everything else needs some work to come up to Passion Restaurant standards. My blackened Mahi was just ok and extremely bland. Food needs a little pizzazz - easily fixable with some TLC from the chef(s), who are not visible in the restaurant at all. The food should match the atmosphere and it's not there yet. Show us you're working on it and I'll come back again. The place was great pre-theater for families and should thing about a prix fix menu for theater goers. The restaurant did not volunteer the Kennedy Center shuttle information or have anything about it on the website (nor anything about valet parking they offer!). Flatbread was very limp - not crispy at all as promised."

  • "This was my second time at DC, and this time, we celebrated Father's Day for my dad. He enjoyed the food as did we all. Our server was very attentive and personable. We'll be back soon."

  • "the seating is not comfortable. we sat in a booth by the window which I usually prefer - but this time, I felt like i needed a booster seat. I was sitting so low to the table it was almost uncomfortable. Next time I will ask for a table because the food is worth it."

  • "I've eaten here 3-4 times over the past 8 months and each time been happy with the food and ambience. The servers have been exceptionally friendly and competent. My only negative experience was during the winter when the person responsible for the coat check closet disappeared for about 5 minutes and no one else seemed able to get me my coat. The menu is heavy on comfort foods, and meats and fish are tasty and decently-sized. The sides seem a bit on the stingy side. The broccoli side for example came in a tiny rectangular try (like the other sides), with mostly stems and few crowns."

  • "We had reserved a quiet. table for dinner but were offered only noisy locations. The atmosphere is energetic and loud.so it's hard to find quiet. Food was good and creative but not outstanding. Service was slighty distracted but professional."

  • "Had the baon flatbread pizza for an appetizer - outstanding! First off, it's big enough for a meal. But the caramelized onions and bacon made me want to eat it all by myself anyway. It's really terrific. I followed the pizza with the roasted beet salad. I would have liked more beets and less greens and dressing, but it was still very, very good. Mac and cheese on the side and a glass of wine made for a great meal that wasn't terribly expensive."

  • "I'd been to District Commons several times for happy hour but not for dinner. They have a diverse menu, and our server was very helpful in accommodating my food allergies (wheat, onion). It would be nice if there were more appetizer and bar selections that don't have wheat in them, but overall it was a great experience."

  • "all around outstanding Alex the hostess was exceptional in her elegant demeanor and conduct she really made us feel very welcome, Hidden gem - I am a K Street and Penn Square nightly dinner regular and most of my government colegues are unaware of your location - I will do what I can to change that! Outstanding play of a wide range of flavors - my teste buds were celebrating - congratulations Chef! "

  • "When I received the bill, I was surprised to see a charge for the pretzel bread (which was very good). I would expect to have bread or rolls included as part of the price of the salad. We arrived at 1 PM for lunch and the noise level was high, including loud plate noise from the kitchen area. As time passed, the decibel level decreased making conversation easier. The salmon in the seafood cobb salad could use a rework. If you are a beer drinker, they have an extensive list of brews."

  • "The white mussels are amazing! The lemon, thyme, Limoncello, and cream broth is perhaps the best I've ever had. The mussels were a bit puny but boy was this worth it. The fries are pretty good as well! (I'd skip the Mac and cheese unless you like the artificial velveeta flavor)."

  • "The food was okay but pricey considering the portions. I was extremely disappointed with the funnel cake. The first one that was brought to me was burned! I was surprised with the lack of quality control. After speaking to the server, she brought me a second cake that was prepared better. If I received a gift certificate to this restaurant I would return. However, it is unlikely that I would return on my own."

  • "We had reservations for an evening dinner. We were seated towards the back where there was not only a large table being served, but another party of 6 sat just after us, both groups with many kids. Given how much we were paying, the crying baby and disruptive kids were a truly disappointing and negative experience. We inquired about moving but weren't accommodated. "

  • "Gathered a group of 7 for a "reunion" dinner. Was very pleasantly surprised to get large booth in the back of the restaurant, where we could easily talk-the noise level in the rest of the restaurant was much more energetic. The waitress was very attentive, but also sensitive to let us carry on conversation with minimum interruption. Wonderful evening, great food, wine, and staff."
