Diner Reviews
  • "Had a 530pm dinner reservation for a 730 show down at the Palace. Once seated the server came to explain wine list and came back quite a few minutes later to take drink orders--then said--are you ready to order dinner as well? From then on, felt like we were rushed through the meal.-in fact bill was presented at 620pm. We had left enough time to enjoy a good meal and it felt like she was hoping to turn the table for another group before the show. Not the experience we expect when going to a fine dining establishment. Food was just so-so.. Atlantic sole was tasteless, served with cold brussel sprouts and asparagus. The mushroom risotto was yummy. Brisket was tasty, but dried out. Dessert was not worth price or calories."

  • "The food was good not great. Noise level was high. Waiter spilled dipping oil on person next to us. Tables are kind of close together. Overall it was a good dinner just not a great dinner, for the price paid."

  • "Three sisters, each with special dietary needs, celebrating their birthdays before Flashdance...and District made it a hit! Great food and very accommodating service."

  • "Had four different appetizers. All were good. Service was a bit slow at first, but got better. The noise level is too high. Very hard to have a conversation. In addition, tables are way to close. If you like eating with strangers go here. Table next to us was probably 6-8 inches from our table. Would only go if I was going to a show and wanted to be nearby. It was also on the warm side, may be due to change of seasons but open a door then."

  • "We are repeat diners and have never had a bad experience. This our favorite Playhouse Square restaurant."

  • "The service was great and they did a great job serving our group in a very short amount of time, thereby getting us out the door in time for our show. Great for pre-show dining."

  • "Very attentive wait staff, excellent food. Noise level a little loud for quiet conversation."

  • "Food was good ... service was quick and friendly. Great location in Playhouse Square locale. We'll be back."

  • "Though the food was very good, and the wine list has several good bottles under $30, we will not go back. The noise was deaffening, and the service was so slow that we thought we might miss our 7:30 curtain. We were seated at 6:00, but did not recive our entrees until 6:55! The restaurant was full, but the kitchen should have been prepared for the crowd."

  • "2nd time there before a show. 1st time was great. Great service and food. This time other than when they brought food we were pretty much ignored. Entre was served significantly after appetizer. We had to rush thru eating to make the show. Food still great but really disappointed with the service."

  • "We were the first customers to arrive for the evening, but more arrived shortly thereafter. The space is large, with a contemporary feel and lots of windows, creating an elegant atmosphere. Service is attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Timing of courses was right on. Preparation and presentation of food was excellent. I would recommend District to anyone wanting a good dining experience before the theater or for a special night out. I will definitely return."

  • "When I found The District on Yelp, I was thrilled with the proximity to the State Theater. The food was good but they need more waiters. The manager was even helping with drinks. I started to get nervous about missing the start of the show. Overall it was fine for what we were looling for but I'm not sure I'd go there if I wasn't doing something in the Theater District..."

  • "Group of 4 recently visited Friday night. Decor minimal but noise level loud - hard to carry on conversation with other couple at 6:00 p.m. Service was adequate, but waiter did not go out of his way to check on us. Rolls and apple/beet salad were good and nicely portioned and can easily be split between 2. Our dishes consisting of the sole, salmon and seafood casserole dish were inadequately seasoned and bland. Noodles served under the salmon were not completely cooked. The chocolate ganache dessert was very good, but rich. recommend sharing. There's other places one can choose to dine at Playhouse Square. We decided to try District as something new and different, but we won't be back even though other reviewers rated it well."

  • "The food was really good, not GREAT. A little expensive but VERY convenient to the theater"

  • "We arrived with a group of eight in the middle of a horrific snowstorm. Since only crazy people were out, the place was half-empty and we had two servers taking good care of us. Drinks covered our wildly divergent tastes: great cocktails, a nice wine flight, & numerous craft beers. Rosemary olive oil & salt a nice touch w/ the bread. The carnivores were happy with the brisket (tender) & chicken (tangy sauce). As vegans, my wife & I had many choices. Apple & Beet Salad was fabulous, dressed perfectly. Wife went with a trio of veggie sides (brown-sugar glazed carrots were outstanding!) while I tried the Lentil Falafel. Perfectly spiced, very firm texture, looked great atop of bed of rice and topped w/ a terrific tomato ragout."

  • "Came before a show at Playhouse Square. Picked the Disctrict because of it's location and good reviews. Would definitely go again!"

  • "There does not seem to be alot of places to go before the Theater on a Sat Nught. This place was great, food Was excellent and service was quick. We were not rushed and enjoyed our time there."

  • "It was unfortunate that we studied the menu for ten minutes and tried to order an appetizer only to then have the wait person tell us that they were out of it. I don't need to be seated right next to two other couples when the restaurant was not full and there were plenty of open tables. If you going to sit people so close together I would prefer to have tables cleared promptly after your neighbors have left. Hostess were on their phones way too much. I felt like I was interrupting them when I asked for the restrooms."

  • "It seemed that the server was not prepared for us and was very busy getting the attention of the female bartender. We we each given 1 roll, had not salt on the table and a different server just dropped off the various toppings for the roll we each had. No description of any specials (if they had any), no welcome, our waiter just dropped off some bread and took our drink orders. Food was not seasoned, the kitchen must have needed the salt that were supposed to get at the table."

  • "My wife and a couple of friends came here before seeing Jim Gaffigan. We took a chance on this restaurant and all 4 of us were very impressed. The entrees were excellent and varied. We will definitely go back and recommend this place to others!"

  • "Tried District prior to attending the Launch Party for the Playhouse Square Broadway series. Had great foo and drinks over a leisurely two hours. Our party of four ALL had a very favorable experience. Summary of our group experience: a perfect manhattan, very good scallop starter, goat cheese stuffed calamari was NOT rubbery, the Prix Fixe entree was a tasty deal, carrot ginger soup was generous portion and excellent, and the chocolate ganache dessert was not what we expected, but a pleasant surprise that we would order again. I really could have made a meal out of the soup and their freshly baked, hot, and yeasty rolls. Really appreciated the service which was provided in a manner that did not interrupt the table conversations."

  • "Entrees are classics, very well prepared. Desserts are their own and excellent."

  • "Above average food, good server and easy walking distance to theaters. Lamb Osso Bucco and good Sole dishes! My gf & I always split our dinner and this is one of the few restaurants we have been to (we eat out 2-3x/week) where they would not split the entree onto 2 plates for us, even though the place was only half full. Downgraded their service rating for that. NOTE: Though their address is on EUCLID ave, their entrance and valet parking (BTW- nice valet guy) is on the west side of EAST 14th STREET."

  • "Went for a quiet anniversary dinner (they did give us a dessert to celebrate) but we couldn't hear each other, a couple dozen people were milling around the bar area but there was no room there to do that. Steak was underdone (ordered med well and got a lot of red). Beef bourignone was slightly fatty but flavor was good."

  • "My wife and I were coming to Cleveland to see a show in the Playhouse Square area. I wanted a restaurant that was convienntly located to the area, even if we had to sacrifice food quality. There is no sacrifice at District. We let our waitress know that we had a show to see. She took charge to make sure we cashed out in time. Perfect!"

  • "This was my second pre-theater dinner at District. As with the first visit, our waitstaff did not know the menu. This time the waitress informed my dining partner that the vegetarian tart was "broccoli and cheese" but what was delivered was sweet potato. I ordered a salad and mussels. The salad was a good size but rather soggy and unfortunately the broth for the mussels was overly salty and with an overpowering lemon flavor. The bread served with dinner was wonderful, but the waitstaff was very parsimonious in coming to the table to provide more, nor did they keep an eye on our water glasses/refills. The dining room is very loud - sound muting ceiling panels would go a long way to help improve the dining experience."

  • "Menu has unique choices--and some standard offerings. We loved our meals. I had roasted pumpkin salad -- I hesitated to try something that sounded so different. But I was so glad that I did. Pumpkin was flavored perfectly and the greens coated generously insourcing cream & chive dressing. I also had the eggplant appetizer- melt in your mouth good. My husband had the stroganoff entree and thoroughly enjoyed it-- he is VERY hard to please. It's so nice to find a dish he likes. We felt so welcomed by the staff. Due to their confirmation phone call they knew we were going to the theater and the time we needed to be there. They were careful to keep us on time and took very good care of us."

  • "The food was wonderful. Can't say much more than that about the food. Service good, nothing exceptional. Tables are small."

  • "A fabulous restaurant only steps away from the theaters. Great food, excellent wait staff, nice wine selection in all price ranges and a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Will visit again soon!"

  • "I was disappointed with my food. I felt it was OK, the lamb was spicy and the seafood stew my friend ordered was very rich. The environment was fine and the service was good and friendly. There are better places to dine in Cleveland."

  • "I really like District. Have been there several times. The menu has any number of choices that will appeal to a wide range of appetites. The service is good. I ordered the sole but had to switch the mushroom risotto out for some potato wedges. The potatoes were overdone -- hard to bite into and the portions were small. It was a little disappointing because my friend had the chicken and had a good sized plate of food. Nonetheless, District is a welcomed addition to the theater district. They are attentive to time-sensitive dining. I hope they continue to do well."

  • "This is the second time we have eaten at the District. It is close to the theater and just the right size - not too large and crowded and not too small. The chicken was rich and creamy with lots of mushrooms. The coffee hit the spot. The dessert was to die for. Thanks again for an enjoyable dinner."

  • "Nice spot to go to before the theatre. Service was good and food was served quick. Nice size portions. Seafood casserole was good. Not amazing. Wod like to go back and try a few other dishes like the stuffed calamari and blue cheese filet."

  • "Three of us enjoyed a lovely dinner at District in Playhouse Square this week. The food was delicious, the presentation appetizing, and the service impeccable. Our waiter was quick, efficient, and thoughtful in providing a birthday treat for one of our group. After our leisurely dinner, we had plenty of time to walk across the street for the Broadway Buzz program. This was a delightful experience that we will repeat soon!"
