  • "Really enjoyed our meal at Fifth Floor. Not knowing that it is a bit of a "foodie" restaurant, we went there for it's proximity to the Theatre. What we ended up loving about it was the food and service. My husband and I weren't in the mood for a big meal so our great waiter brought over the bar menu for us which was perfect! I'm all about customer service and this restaurant had loads of it. Will definitely go back."

  • "A pity they are closing soon to change the menu and style of the restaurant. The food was delicious, including one of the most sublime pieces of duck I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The service was impeccable. Attentive without being intrusive, friendly without being insincere."

  • "I have known about this restaurant for many years, living outside the city an opportunity never presented itself before. The food was understated yet some of the best I've had of this type in recent memory. The service was almost impeccable. My only comment, as a foodie, I wish I had kept my menu at my side to reread the descriptions of what I had received if only to admire the combinations of items selected to be presented on the plate. It was a beautiful experience."

  • "Can't understand the 5 stars reviews. Nothing I tried stand out. Except for the bill. Bland food. Uninspiring cocktail. Mediocre service. Will never try it again."

  • "This was our 2nd visit and it was just as delightful as the first. Very knowledgeable yet unpretentious staff - service across the board was excellent, the food was scrumptious and the dessert a perfect balance of freshness, softness and sweetness. Thank you to all!"

  • "Fit for only a few; very limited menu, portions are tiny; hamburger is definitely NOT to die for; staff is snooty."

  • "Gracious and attentive staff. Quality menu for specific tastes. Sedate lighting and quiet mood. Plenty of space between tables. Perfect timing between courses. Complete follow through."

  • "Great menu choices - hard to choose. Lovely dinner! So sorry to hear that the restaurant is closing for awhile and changing its focusl"

  • "It was amazing. .. I just proposed right before we got there and they took care of us. ... They got a great table, and everyone was great. It was hands down the best meal I have ever had. .. The wine pairing was delicious, the the Waiters were amazing. .. expensive yes. ... But worth so much more. .."

  • "I've dined at many lovely San Francisco restaurants. This one is over priced for what you get. The salad could have been consumed in three bites. Service was excellent. Each plate of food was artistically presented. However, there is a limited menu, some of which was unusual."

  • "I think the local "CA" wine selection is limited as the food is more a California/American flaire."

  • "Interesting, flavorful food, locally sourced, great service. We had a number of our party show up late due to traffic and the staaff were very accomodating. However, they told us it was ok to order 3 courses and some people did, then there wasn't enough time to finish all the courses and get us out on time so we missed the opening of the show we were trying to make. My recommendation is to treat this restaurant as an evening event, linger over the meal and give yourself time to enjoy the amuse bouche, the intermediary surprise courses, the excellent service. Don't plan to try to make the theater unless you start at 4 pm!"

  • "Went there with a party of 6. We have been doing great restaurants together for 20+years! This experience was by far the worst we have ever had. the only thing worse than the flavorless food was the hideous service we received from the waiter. Never again Fifth Floor. Love the hotel and have had wonderful service in the lounge but the restaurant was a joke. Manager tried to salvage the evening however when staff treats you as badly as our server treated us, it was beyond repair. Spoiled the night and spoiled an otherwise terrific weekend. Save yourself the disappointment, find somewhere else to go."

  • "nothing singled it out as better than all the really fine restaurants. Everything was excellent though nothing was terribly memorable. It was very noisy."

  • "My wife and I come to this restaurant every year to celebrate her birthday. They did not let us down year after another. The arrangements were very closely executed. I have made a special request for a cake to surprise my lady this year and the hostess, Diane, has followed up with my request with the pastry chef. The cake was absolutely beautiful and remarkably fresh! One noticible fact that made us both a little uncomfortable was that our server, Brian, was gone without a word for at least 15 minutes right after he took our drink orders and before our food order. He was a little neglictful for our table for the entire dining experience, stopping by only once to check in with us at our final dish."

  • "Some dishes were overcooked, all were overpriced given the quality. I can not understand how this place is on the 100 Best list. Very average."

  • "We got our reservations same day and had not been to 5th floor in 12 years :) The service was amazing, the food inventive and fun. The octopus was cooked to perfection, such a perfect tooth feel. And, the small macaron and grape marshmallow at the end were absolutely delightful."

  • "Staff seems a bit uncomfortable. Really trying hard with the uniquely prepared dishes with over the top explanations. Was expecting more of a wow factor to the palate. But, still worth going."

  • "Initial impressions left us a bit deflated: the place has an awkward layout, it's a little too hip, way too dark, and the chairs were uncomfortable (don't lean back!). But then the food started happening, and all our senses came alive! Transformative, really, as each plate seemed to tell a delicious story and take us on a magical adventure. A delightful evening."

  • "The answer to the title..a resounding no! Third time we've had the pleasure of eating at The Third Floor. Each time we come away thoroughly impressed. We've eaten at all of SF's finest restaurants and frankly if I had to choose one for a sure fire great meal and service I would immediately choose The Fifth Floor. Yes, it's that good. My venison meal was as good a meal as I've had in quite awhile. Love their thoughtful wine list and their ability to get us out of the restaurant in time to get up to the Golden Gate Theater."

  • "An amazing evening; great ambiance, food, exceptional service. We had notified the restaurant that this was our 39th anniversary and upon arrival we were seated at a romantic table and given complimentary champagne. The server, Langdon, explained the dishes well and made good recommendations. We chose to have wine pairings, and the sommelier, Jose, did an exceptional job of matching wine to our stated preferences. The food presentation was exquisite. Our dishes were all exceptional: Foie Gras Torchon with tomato jam; the Medocino Uni (sea urchin); Venison loin, Gwen Avocado, salad of warm vegetables, and Mt. Lassen trout. There is a large and creative cocktail list and a very extensive wine list. This was an outstanding experience."

  • "We could not have had a more enjoyable meal while visiting San Francisco than the one we experienced at the Fifth Floor! The asian-inspired decor, the wait staff all attentive and dressed in unobtrusive black, the ample but soft lighting, the eclectic menu and exhaustive wine list....all combined for a truly memorable evening."

  • "We came here after a stressful week and it was exactly the type of evening that brought us back to calm. We had wonderful service from checkin (including bringing the wine we brought to the sommelier) to departure. The tasting menu was terrific and because neither of us like duck, our server convinced the chef to substitute the fantastic wagyu beef dish. Our cocktails were unique and used wonderful ingredients, and each dish, including amuse bouche, bread service and post-dessert treats were very good. Our favorite dishes included the warm oysters in a fabulous garlic-y aioli, the rich sweetbreads in an earthy sauce, and the wagyu beef. This is not our first visit and won't be our last. What a wonderful evening!"

  • "The food was good. There were interesting flavors in almost every dish. The service was fine, although it felt like they were trying to replicate the fine dining service that you find in really good restaurants. In some cases, it worked. In some, it didn't. I think it's a good restaurant and experience overall, but the price is more than it should be for what you get. And with so many other great restaurants available in San Francisco, I just don't know if this is one that I'd return to."

  • "The food really is outstanding, both meat and fish. My party had the seared Foie Gras to start and then Black Cod or Venison - all perfectly cooked. But the service was weird - we ordered a glass of Sauterne with the Foie Gras and we were brought Beames de Venise which was replaced after some discussion, asked three times to talk to the Sommelier, were told he was busy and then had to hail him ourselves. Our guests, who are restaurant investors, described the service as "headless chickens" but that was harsh. Very expensive ($500 for four) but, on balance worth it as a rare treat."

  • "This was my second time dining at Fifth Floor and everything was just as fabulous as the first time - which doesn't often happen!! This time the dinner was for a group of 14 and everything went very smoothly from start to finish. Everyone was fantastic -Stephanie who took care of the reservation (and was not ruffled when I changed the number of guests three times) and who provided menus with our company logo, Jose the sommelier - his advise was taken and was delicious and the wait staff are ALL superb. We had a few food allergies and they worked with those with absolutely no fuss. And of course the most important item - the food - was melt-in-your-mouth fabulousness!! I highly recommend Fifth Floor."

  • "I went to Fifth Floor on a Saturday night. As a single traveler dining alone, I sometimes am not well treated on busy nights. This was not an issue at all at Fifth Floor- everybody from the hostess to the wait staff to the sommelier was gracious and friendly. I had the tasting menu with wine parings. The food was incredible- every dish amazing. The duck was especially good. The wine parings were super as well. I could not have been happier with my meal, the service, and the entire experience. Spendy meal, but worth the price."

  • "Overall it was a very good experience. The recommended white wine was a little strange. At $120 a bottle, I would expect a little more. The recommended fish was good. It would have been better if it was seared first or brown. But it was quite tasty. The ambiance was great, except there was a crying child. It is a great restaurant to impress a date or for a special occasion."

  • "These guys are the best! We did the Chef's tasting menu without the wine pairing. The food, of course, was a creative revelation with each course. Amazing flavor combinations, perfect portion sizes. As fabulous as that was, the best part is that they remembered that I proposed to my wife 4 YEARS ago at The Fifth Floor. They knew what table we sat at and gave us that exact table. No, it wasn't a coincidence - they had made that note 4 years ago and remembered. We were pampered with extra attention, complimentary champagne and chocolates, a personal visit from the chef - we were like a king and queen! What a wonderful time, I know we'll never forget this night!"

  • "I love the relaxed feel of this restaurant. We like the beer that was recommended by the bartender. We also enjoyed every dishes from salad, appetizer and main course. All dishes presented like a piece of art. We seldom share dishes; but we did as we want all of us have a chance to taste different dishes. Service was outstanding."

  • "Use the sommelier!!!! With each dish, Jose was able to pair the perfect glass of wine (none of any we would have known to choose) to perfectly bring out and compliment each bite....we have eaten at very excellent restaurant and 5th Floor is one of them. Treat yourself!"

  • "Taste: 4 stars Food portion: 1 star Service: 5 stars 2 slim guys, 2 petite women, 1 young adult. We ordered the chef menu. None of us had enough food, even after we finished all the bread given to us. I think if the restaurant doubles the portion, we can still eat it all. That's how little food we got. This is the worst restaurant in terms of portion I had ever been. I noticed that some other reviewers have similar complaint. The chef should listen if the restaurant wants to stay in business."

  • "it was nice to return to the fifth floor and find it had come back to being a very fine restaurant with imaginative and yummy food and great service...only problem was the noisy table next door but after they left, we had a fince evening."

  • "Cocktails were good and strong, ambiance was warm, service was on target, and the food was great! We both had the trout, which was perfectly cooked. We weren't super fond of the sea bream but the preparation was lovely. Red squash soup was velvety and flavorful. Will return."
