A word from Dirty Habit
Edgy, bar-centric concept from former Fifth Floor culinary and bar team features outdoor patio, rare spirits list and an innovative cocktail & wine list.
Helmed by the Fifth Floor’s Chef David Bazirgan and Bar Manager Brian Means, the new bar-centric concept plays host to a vivid social scene and creative craft cocktail menu with an emphasis on rare brown spirits. In a prime location perched five floors above the streets of the developing high-tech start-up epicenter in SOMA, Dirty Habit serves as an intimate hideaway for locals seeking inventive offerings and a sociable dining atmosphere, both inside the restaurant and on the spacious, heated outdoor patio.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great place to enjoy a great cocktail and tasty bites without having to feel cramped or rushed. You really get the chance to enjoy the experience and your company in between orders."

  • "Those of us who loved David Bazirgan's cooking at Fifth Floor, should avoid Dirty Habit. There is no resemblance, intended or not. It is a noisy, loud, popular bar, with small plates right out of Food Network: forward, aggressive, salt-laden flavors. It is as far from the elegant, balanced, nuanced cooking of Fifth Floor as one can get. We once held Bazirgan to be the natural successor to Roland Passot (La Folie/SF), but now? Not in this place, not this time. Hopefully he will soon exit this Millennial liquor party and get out on his own, as Ravi Kapur has."

  • "Dirty Habit is a fun new hot spot with a highly energetic (read loud) atmosphere. Food is tasty and the service was just fine. The tables and chairs in the back room are a bit unwieldy; appearance seems to have trumped function and not in a good way. I enjoyed peeking at the outdoor bar and would love to try it one day. The evening we were there it was taken over by private party."

  • "First time visiting Dirty Habit and the service and food were over the top good. Just don't go expecting a normal restaurant with multiple food entrees. It was mostly small shared "bar plates" and three main course entrees (just three); a burger, (under $15) plus halibut and ribeye steak ($33 and $35, respectively). Our bill for two people with one drink each 2 apps, burger and ribeye and 20% gratuity was $133.00."

  • "It was opening night, so we do need to cut them some slack. After we were seated, it took them 45 minutes for them to get our order. The drinks were fine, and the food was alright. A lot of people around us left because everything was taking so long, so fortunately we were taking the night off and taking it slow. That being said, there is a LOT of potential! It's gorgeous inside, and the outside seating is quite nice as well. FINAL VERDICT: I'd wait for a year to come here - there seems to be a lot of room for improvement on all fronts. "

  • "This is my 4th trip and always amazed with the food, wine, service...everything is always terrific!"

  • "Amazing experience as always. I've been there three times. I've had the Chef's menu each time. Each time it takes me to a new place. It always impresses without resorting to the standards that most do. Always fantastic food and experience."

  • "This is one of my favorite places in San Francisco. THe food is wonderful and the atmosphere is great!"

  • "i had my birthday dinner here and they made it extra special by providing a menu that was personalized and then adding a little candy/dessert plate that wished me a happy birthday in chocolate. not cheap but worth it for the detail they put into everything."

  • "My dining companion said this was the best meal of his life so far. I enjoyed the tasting menu. Our server was wonderfully knowledgeable and very accommodating of our food preferences."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in SF, everything is perfect. I have been coming to Fifth Floor for a number of years and it has never disappointed me. I enjoy the creativity of the chef and his ability to combine ingredients from different cultures and make all of them come together as if they have always meant to be together. The wine list is great and service has always been outstanding."

  • "The best sommelier on the planet! She asked several questions and came up with a beautiful Albarino-style wine from Lodi. It went perfectly with our beautiful Mendocino Uni Flan and Poached Lobster dishes. My only complain is that the portions were very small. But the flavors were out of this world. Great place for special occasions."

  • "Had to wait an eternity to be seated, even with reservation, but the service and food made up for it with extra dishes and a waived corkage."

  • "A real ho-hum. Small portions and high prices. We were seated by the window next to a gravel rooftop. No view. Won't return."

  • "One of the better dining experiences. Great food and superb service."

  • "We had a lot of fun at this place. Staff is pleasant, entertaining and fun. The sommelier is absolutely fantastic - she took us ona wine tour to remember."

  • "The tasting menu is an experience with the new chef in charge. A start with English pea flan and carrot air was light in texture, but strong in flavor. The foie duo was stellar, balanced in flavor with a bergamot marmalade. Scallops with fava beans and morel combined a freshness with earthiness, and the pasta trio was perfectly prepared with flavors bold, but complimentary. The stand out dishes of lamb chops, belly, and loin and the duck breast with sunchokes were both amazing in flavor and technique. The desserts were delicate in their use of chocolate flavors, but satisfying. Wine choices were terrific and cocktails amazing. Service was attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "Fifth Floor the newest incarnation compared to Seasons Restaurant at the Four Season, Ame at St Regis, W Hotel, and other South of Market (SOMA) hotel restaurants is the best. The prices are very expensive, however the ingredients and cooking techniques are five star. Everything we had was creative and executive chef came to our table to get our feedback."

  • "This review is based on dinner before the management changed the concept. Given their dedication to exellence, I have no doubt that the new menu will entice diners. Dinner included excellent salads and mains with a focus on fresh ingredients and updated American cuisine. If we had to choose only one place to dine every night, this would have been it (but hey -- it's San Francisco. We ventured out.) The service hit that perfect note of friendly and professional. Reasonably priced wine list for this type of place. Dinner is also served in the bar. The room has the sleek ambiance typical of a Kimpton property, with a civilized noise level. The bar and lounge areas are soemwhat louder, but still comfortable for a conversation."

  • "Loved it. My bf and I came here a few months ago and we ordered pretty much the entire menu (not an exaggeration, we are obsessed with food) and ate ALLof it . VERY GOOD. definately recommend it. Service was awesome very accomadating with our huge order and the small table"

  • "Went on a Friday night at 7:00 PM and had the place to ourselves, which was kind of weird. Since it was not busy the service was excellent, but not hovering. Disappointingly short by the glass wine list. Excellent food. Tasting menu was a great value. Must save room for the stout ice cream and doughnuts."

  • "We went for the Dine About Town special and had the most amazing food. The service was prompt and good but the waiter's attitude left much to be desired. He became very snooty the minute we ordered from the Dine About Town menu. His attitude lowered the entire dining experience for you. It would have been an otherwise great experience. I would go back to Bacar if they participate in the Dine About Town again. It was the complete opposite experience there - fabulous food and great, great service and attitude. Everyone was extremely nice."

  • "Food was average. Atmosphere on web site looks better than actual location."

  • "My girlfriend and I ate here mostly on a whim and were pleasantly surprised by the ease of securing a reservation. I ordered from the very reasonably priced $65 tasting menu, and my girlfriend ordered the crab cappuccino and seared scallops from the a la carte menu. The food was delicious and portions just barely big enough. The food's plating and presentation was up to par for fine dining, but not as virtuosic as, say, Fleur de Lys. The wine list is rather expensive and almost ridiculously extensive, but the sommelier who assisted us was extremely knowledgeable and helpful; indeed, we experienced wonderful service overall. The ambiance was likewise very enjoyable; the restaurant has benefited greatly from its recent renovations."

  • "Very good food -- but VERY small portions. After spending $500 for 4 - went home and ordered pizza. Then need to get over themselves ---- just because it is very good food doesn't mean that the entire course should be able to be eaten in one bite."

  • "This place is simply amazing. My wife and I enjoyed a meal with a friend where we all had the tasting menu. Everything about the food was absolutely great. My only complaint was that some of the wine pairings really didn't work for me. The wines were good, but they just didn't quite mesh well with the dishes (except for one pairing, which was great). I'll definitely return someday."

  • "This might have been a top notch SF restaurant in the past, but I was overwhelmingly disappointed by the main entrees. For the price, there are dozens of other places I'd rather go again."

  • "In my humble opinion, the food, ambiance, and service does not meet expectations. My dining experience at Fifth Floor was the most expensive dining experience I have had to date (by a very small margin), yet I am compelled to state that my dining experience at Fifth Floor is not memorable - other than price - in comparison to other dining experiences in the area."

  • "The first time we went to the Fifth Floor my wife wasn't feeling well and we were not able to finish our meal. The food didn't make her sick but because she wasn't feeling well we weren't able to finish our meal. The staff at the fifth floor was very accomodating above and beyond their normal excellence."

  • "Very upscale and quiet restaurant. The food was excellent, but don't expect the pristine staff to joke around with you. They're serious about being the best!"

  • "The check was not justified for the quality of the food. The apetizers were fantastic but the main courses disappointing."

  • "I went to the restaurant with my wife with very high expectations. These were not met. Food was ok but certainly not outstanding. My impression was that the executive chef was on her day off, but prices were not. Definetely not good value. The restaurant was half-full, which in this city it's an indicator that something wrong is going on. This restaurant is well below others such as Gary Danko, Aqua or Fleur de Lys."

  • "Nice quiet place for a business dinner. Service was very attentive and helpful. Food was expensive, but great."
    Dined on 9/11/2008
  • "The wine list was excellent and there was a very good selection of half bottles. The service was above average and was comfortable. I had the sea bass which was great and my wife was very satisfied with the lamb. The foie gras was average and the potato soup was very tasty. The flourless chocolate cake ended a pleasant meal."

  • "We had an outstanding meal: the tasting menu with the wine flight. It was truly memorable, and the service was top drawer, which we have always enjoyed at Fifth Floor. Matthew was our waiter, and the whole staff worked seamlessly in what I think of as the Fifth Floor style: knowledgeable and friendly, but not too familiar or preciously foodie."

  • "we were VERY disappointed....the portion sizes are samples of food...it's good food, not extraordinary, and for the amount, definately NOT WORTH THE PRICE....Wasn't it back in the 90's when people had money to burn? The chef is totally out of touch...bringing a little toy pan and filling the rest of my plate at the table is sooooo blah, as is pouring the olive oil from a tea kettle...and the bread cart is nice, if they would give you a basket of all of it....it was 90% empty and that was depressing...the waitstaff is knowledgeable and good, but boring and stuffy and they overdo everything, just like everything else in the restaurant....a glass of mediocre wine starts at $18....BRING BACK MORRONE...DO SOMETHING....BILL KIMPTON WOULD BE MAD!!"

  • "Exceptionally serious and successful food with an unusual touch in nearly every dish. Small servings, especially of first courses. Expert and friendly service; one of the best wine lists (in all price ranges, tho very pricey at the top end) in SF."
    Dined on 9/4/2008
  • "Brought business associates who are foodies and wine lovers, and they loved it. The lamb dish and the steak-for-two were standouts. Would definitely return."
