Diner Reviews
  • "I've been lucky enough to dine here three times now, and each time I am overwhelmed by the wonderful service and rich flavors of the chef's take on vegetarian cuisine. I also appreciate their inclusion of a superb non alcoholic wine by the glass (not for kids, but great for adults who aren't drinking). I will always come back every chance I get!"

  • "The food here was impeccable and so creative, I highly recommend this intimate east village spot:-)"

  • "Chef Amanda Cohen is comfortably in the top rung of NYC chefs of any persuasion, vegetarian or otherwise. The compact menu allows for extremely well thought out dishes, crafted to perfection each time. The menu evolves as the chef and her team come up with new ideas (e.g., recent innovation broccoli dogs, a tasteful dish one-ups its inspiration, the hot dog). The dishes are each complex, multi-tiered variations on a single vegetable, including terrific garnishes and sauces. That might mean multiple types of beets done in several ways on one plate. If there's ever a vegetable you have avoided, this is the place to try it. You could use a dart to pick your meal as every dish excels and, like your kids, you will love them equally."

  • "Most of the food was average vegetarian fare. The mushroom pâté, and the ice cream bar dessert were very special. We had looked forward to eating here for a long time and ended up being a little disappointed.dont imagine we'll go back."

  • "I can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was at Dirt Candy. There is so much creativity, artistry, craft, and FLAVOR! In every dish. The wacky wine list, so personally chosen by Chef Amanda Cohen is such a gem. Everything truly delicious and purposeful. I admire the ability to conceive and execute such a complete and thoughtful set of choices. Get thee to Dirt Candy. You will not regret it."

  • "I am not a vegetarian though my daughter has severe dairy and red meat allergies so vegetarian / vegan options are often much appreciated especially when we travel. Dirt Candy was by far the very best vegetarian restaurant that I have ever experienced. The mushroom mousse appetizer could easily turn me into a veggie-head! ... We tried and shared a number of entree options with the "beet" themed option being our favorite --- great combination of flavors and textures, followed by the bean-Friendly service and it was apparent the small staff works well as a team to make for a most pleasant and hands on dining experience."

  • "I came here to try something different with my wife as we normally would seek meat and this is definitely not that type of place. After the appetizers blew us away we were excited for the main course only to be let down in terms of overall experience. Flavor was there...presentation phenomenonal...but I was instantly reminded why we despised vegetables. Perhaps we chose the wrong two out of four dishes.Thankfully the desserts saved the night for us. So we left overall happy and will definitely come again."

  • "Chef Amanda Cohen is nothing short of a genius. I love vegetarian cuisine, but it is often uninspired, not much flavor. Dirt Candy could convert even a die hard meat lover. The mushroom mousse appetizer was intensely flavored, earthy goodness with the texture of foie gras. Loved the beet gnocchi, with beautiful baby gold and red beets. The jalapeño hush puppies were equally outstanding, with a pleasant burn from the jalapeños. The rich smokey flavor of the broccoli dog, absolutely will fool you into thinking you are devouring the best hot dog you ever had. Very creative wine list, and will do half glasses so you can try several. Finish off the meal with popcorn, and your conversion is complete."

  • "It took me forever to get to this spot but once I did, it was worth the wait and I look forward to going back soon. The food is unique, vegan-friendly, delicious and beautiful. My friend and I loved everything we ate and enjoyed spying what other people chose to order. Dirt Candy is the perfect romantic special-occasion restaurant, you just have to plan in advance to get a table."

  • "normally eat meat-based dishes, but I went to dirt candy and had a great meal. Jalapeno hush puppies are insanely good. the corn entree and the beans entree were both excellent. hard to get a reservation"

  • "as other reviewers state, the food is cutting edge. I had mixed feelings about the result. The staff is very welcoming, including the owner, who is quite low key, given her reputation. I think it is worth a try."

  • "This was a reallly interesting interpretation of vegetarian (and vegan) dishes, tasty and beautifully presented. The highlight was definitely the desserts - the carrot meringue pie and nanaimo were incredibly delicious. We would definitely return."

  • "The food here is special in so many ways. The tastes are delicate and rich at the same time. Each bite is a moment to savor. You almost have to pause, at times, to stop and absorb the flavors. The wine was excellent and the presentation divine. The only thing I would say is that it was the second time I dined at Dirt Candy, and the menu was the same. Because it is a small menu,we ordered just about everything. We would have liked to experience a few new appetizers or specialties from this exceptional chef."

  • "Very fun place with very good food. I loved that the server asked us right away if any of our party were vegan and then throughout the meal told us which meals could be prepared vegan and what substitutes they would use -- it's surprising how rarely that happens at vegetarian restaurants. If it wasn't for the long wait for a reservation, we would definitely go more often!"

  • "I took my wife to Dirt Candy for her birthday and after dinner we both agreed that it was absolutely worth the month-long wait. This 12 table spot is reminiscent of tiny ganstronomiques in Paris. With a small, and focused, menu that is thought through and well-crafted the experience was fun and easy. For such a popular place we never felt rushed or compelled to order quickly. We were able to relax and enjoy the rich combination of flavors in each dish. My vegetarian experience has often felt flat and left me immediately wanting a ribeye. Not so with Dirt Candy. We not only left satisfied but still discussing each plate the next day. Highly recommended. Jalapeño Hush Puppies Potato Spinach Beans Beets Popcorn pudding Celery cheese cake"

  • "Dirtcandy has to be some of the most amazing food that I have ever eaten. From the hush-puppies all the way to the oh so delicious carrot pie and sourcream icecream, I just couldn't get enough. The waitress was exuberant and suggested a fantastic wine pairing (MC2), and our table neighbors we're simply divine. All around, a winning experience!"

  • "very good flavors+textures. Not overly long overly ambitious menu. 3 of us had a starter (Jalapeno Poppers w/Maple butter...i thot these were the weakest of our meal though there were plenty of them), then ordered 3 appetizers and 3 "entrees" which are somewhat but not majorly larger than starters and then 3 desserts. We shared everything which is EZ to do +d 1 bottle wine. Total tab w/tax+tip $235 - alot!!! tho aint your bargain eatery. Space VERY small . 1 side a banquette bench-next time that's where i will be. The stylish plywood Eames style chairs are not deep enuf, therefore not comfortable. Server perky + attentive but over eager to move it all along and keep things flowing. We'll be back. Successful Experimental Delicious."

  • "I took my vegan date here for a special night it it was beyond all my expectations. This place is AMAZING!!! Im super into food and was worried about eating vegan but now I want to come back all the time. I didn't even notice it was vegan. BRILLIANT!!"

  • "I had been waiting a very long time to check out this gem. I was eager and visited with much anticipation. My expectations were completely exceeded. The food was to die for. I am afraid I will be forever addicted to the broccoli dog. Thank you for creating a great vibe, amazing food and an opportunity for veggies to stuff their faces with deliciousness. YUM!!!"

  • "Dirt Candy is of the rarest types of vegetarian establishments that can turn even the most adamant vegetable haters into believers. I am not a vegetarian but for the most part, I stick to a mostly plant-based diet. Dirt Candy far exceeded my expectations. I had to make a reservation for 2 for a Saturday night about 2 month in advance, but it was worth the wait. Don't miss the jalapeno hush puppies and the beet entree. The carrot pie is innovative and delectable. The service is wonderful. I'm in love."

  • "We are from CT and there are no places like this to eat. The food was delicious and the server was friendly and very knowledgable. Places like this make it easy to be vegan."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "the food here is amazing, and the way they choose to work with vegetables is not only innovative, but also unique and inspiring. dirt candy certainly knows how to bring out the flavors of a vegetable and transform it at the same time. our table of 2 both agreed that the potato dish was perhaps one of the best things we've ever eaten. ever. mains were delicious as well (broccoli! as hot dogs!). popcorn pudding was to die for, though i found my celery cheesecake lacking in celery flavor and a bit overpowering in general sweetness. also a bit disappointed that for 2 people, 3 appetizers, 2 mains, and 2 desserts still left us hungry. will certainly know to order more next time."

  • "Interesting and lovely delicious food combinations! Great place for Vegans!"

  • "The food is interesting. It's interesting to taste how a chunk of broccoli can pass for a hot dog, or to see how international corn traditions can be combined. Delicious, satisfying, abundant? Nope. Interesting? Definitely."

  • "That the ambience is so abysmal and the restaurant gets stars at all speaks volumes for food and service. Take a tiny space in a gritty 'hood and fill it full of neurotic dietary obsessives (i.e. vegans...how DID we get this way???). But, the food is spectacular, stunning, superlative - triple S's all the way and a fourth plus a fifth, no - make it a sixth, for smart and sexy service. So, despite the passive-aggressive troll whose lap I had to sit in, I would still highly recommend a visit. And, thank goodness there is an expansion on the horizon. Also, not all vegans are damaged control-freaks lacking social skills. I am charming and VERY funny and really smart and well-groomed and I like people as much as animals and I like S words."

  • "Very creative and flavorful way of serving vegetables. Loved it, but as a meat eater, not sure it was worth the almost 3 month wait to get a Saturday 5:30 seating. (I am not sure any restaurant is worth waiting that long...but my partner insisted.) Cute small place, service awesome, food very creative and flavorful."

  • "A friend sent me a DC gift certificate so I could be his test pig. My husband & I were greatly impressed by the presentation of the dishes, the unique flavor melanges, the freshness of the ingredients, the friendly and attentive waitress, as well as the special service of Chef Cohen bringing each plate to us in person as star treatment for using a gift certificate. Dirt Candy is very small, so it was hard for me to tune out the women sitting next to us and droning on about how everyone at their work is useless. That hardly put a damper on the night, though, because the food and service were so good (the spinach and grapefruit mille feuille with smoked pistachios and ricotta had me swooning)."

  • "Found this on Open Table while visiting NYC and the Lower East side. Very unique menu - only sorry there were just two of us and we couldn't try more (although other diners were quick to share their opinions - all good!). We will not soon forget the grilled eggplant tiramisu dessert with the rosemary cotton candy cloud. The entire dinner was delicious (including the small but inventive wine list, with a memorable chardonny aptly described as a kimchi wine!) but I would go back JUST FOR THE ROSEMARY cotton candy!"

  • "A must for all those foodies and nutrition conscious people interested in a brand new take on vegetables, surprisingly good and creative. Amanda does a superb at job at tricking the palate with the use of ingredients in a radically different manner! A must."

  • "Tiny place, great service. Such interesting food. I loved the appetizer "potato" , the entree "corn" and liked the entree "beans". Small but very nice wine list. Great service. When I looked for a reservation, the only one available for a couple of weeks was 5:45pm on a Tuesday, but there were several empty tables the whole time we were there, so next time I might call in addition to using Open Table."

  • "I've been here a number of times over the years (birthday celebrations, date nights) and the staff has always been friendly and warm. The food has always been exceptional and I will keep on coming back! They're supposed to be opening up into a larger space but I'm sure they'll keep all the charm they currently hold!"

  • "I tried to eat here a couple months ago and the wait was over two hours, so I regrouped and made a reservation for last Wednesday night. I was taking a vegetarian friend, who really hates being stuck with one or two sad options on a restaurant menu. Not only is Dirt Candy all-veg but every single menu item can be prepared VEGAN as well! As an omnivore, I'm mainly on the looking for places to take my veg and vegan friends that won't make me feel like I'm settling for cheese and meat analogs. Dirt Candy makes food with intention and extreme care. I bought the Dirt Candy cookbook the next day, which is equally amazing! And on top of all that, the service was so absolutely wonderful. It reminded me why it's fun to go out for dinner."

  • "Chef Amanda Cohen, her staff and servers make diners and especially repeat customers feel so welcome. Our night felt completely personalized, from the greeting at the door ("we love you! Amanda's so glad you're back") to the swift arrival of those oh-so-good vegan jalapeño hush puppies with maple butter ("on the house – welcome back!") to the table visit from Amanda ("two times in one week – wow!") to the main attraction: the exemplary meal, vibrant and flavorful and gorgeous plated. We had mushroom (somehow I've missed it in all these visits and it is stellar), potato (a total winner) and beets (color! texture! flavor!), and ended with the popcorn pudding – always extraordinary. Dirt Candy for President!"

  • "Overall the food was excellent, in particular the corn entree with tempura poached egg. The food also arrived promptly with little waiting time between courses. However, the space itself is too small and cramped, which put a damper on the whole experience. I realize some restaurants in nyc and in particular the east village are cute little holes in the wall but still. The waitress was friendly and helpful but a bit too loud and in your face."
