Diner Reviews
  • "my first time at dirt candy and had a great experience. I agree with everyone about the goodness of hush puppies and maple butter! I do not agree that the staff and chef are rude- they were very kind to us and chatted with Amanda Cohen for a minute. all around very fun dinner!"

  • "At the end of the meal, you're thinking you just had one of the great meals of your life. Not one of the great vegetarian meals - one of the great meals. I love eating great food. I like vegetables - and everything else. Dirt Candy may be vegetarian, but nothing is missing from this great dining experience. Tiny but terrific wine list, too."

  • "White processed flour, sugar, fried food is all over this menu. For a restaurant meant to promote healthy living in addition to delicious food, there seems to be a lot of "unhealthy" ingredients. And high calorie food. Food tastes average to above average but many items do not fit into a healthy diet"

  • "Whilst a very noisy and tightly packed restaurant, a Dirt a Candy is worth a visit because the food is unusual and delicious."

  • "Dirt Candy is by far the best place we ate while in New York on our Honeymoon. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was impeccable. I can not wait to go back!"

  • "I must admit that while I had heard the hype about Dirt Candy and had wanted to try it for a while, I wasn't so sure what is think. Everything we tried (and we tried a lot!) was amazing. Everything. You can't go wrong here. The service was also exceptional! Try Dirt Candy ASAP. Just be sure to make a reservation!"

  • "This was our second time at Dirt Candy, and it remains the best vegetarian restaurant we've ever been to, and among our best dining experiences ever. The food is all incredibly creative and beautifully considered, and at no point do you feel as though you're eating a meat substitute. The wine list is quite reasonable and well curated. The room is small, but the service is very personal. My favorite restaurant. Anywhere."

  • "To start we had the hush puppies and Tomato! The hush puppies were flecked with bits of fresh jalapeño and perfectly spicy. They were served with a yummy maple butter that could double as a cake frosting. Tomato! was a tart covered with skinned cherry tomatoes, just barely cooked over a creamy base and wrapped with a smokey tomato leather. Fabulous! The entrees were less exciting than the appetizers. Broccoli! was two smoked broccoli hot dogs. The flavor was smokey and vinegary--interesting but overpowering. Corn! was polenta and fresh corn with a tempura poached egg. The egg was spectacular and the dish was tasty, but not exciting. Tiny, well-priced wine list. Dirt Candy is tiny; if you arrive early you'll be waiting outside."

  • "I had to make our reservation nearly two months in advance, but it was well worth it. The entire experience from start to finish was wonderful. The server was attentive, informative and friendly. The food was amazing."

  • "Dirt Candy takes the gastronomy of vegan and vegetarian food and elevated it to fine art. The dinner I had their was sublime and hedonistic all at once. Food creatively crafted into forms and tastes you've never experienced. It was an adventure...and delicious!"

  • "Delicious vegetarian hot-spot!!!! Took a long time to get a reservation, but well worth the wait. Highly recommended!"

  • "When you go to a place such as Dirt Candy, where reservations sell out in minutes weeks in advance and you have to learn what day to make reservations to get one, you approach it a little differently than most. You don't expect ambiance, or comfort, or luxury. You expect great food and great service. And on this, Dirt Candy only half delivers. The service was impeccable. They understood our being late, were very accommodating with the tasting of wines, attentive and friendly. But the food - it was "not bad". The presentations were attractive, but the taste did not have that "pop" that one would expect. You did not say wow when you take a bite, you said "ok, that was good". Given the hype and wait for reservations, I expected more."

  • "Food - always phenomenal. However, the waitress is impossibly overbearing. A good wait person is present when they need to be and then gone. She was constantly interrupting conversation and incredibly pushy to double up on orders. She also couldn't recommend a dish, simply stating, "They're all great.""

  • "Full disclosure...I've been a vegetarian for more than 10 years and have a cupboard full of c.books which I use so I was excited to try this place out...I need to be wowed...this place did a decent job but not excellent. I'm from Vancouver and wanted to compare, Dirt Candy wasn't better than the vegetarian Restaurants I've been to there. My problem is these places tend to take themselves too seriously. I had the beet selection, the salty beets were unnecessarily salty, portions smallish, bread tough. (Try Acorn, Heirloom or Parker Restaurants in Vancouver). I was pleased to find unusual choices, as a vegetarian I get tired of being offered veggie burgers and pasta with veg sauce."

  • "Amanda Cohen brings vibrancy, creativity, passion, and vegetal knowledge to her presentations from appetizer to dessert, everything that leaves her kitchen is brilliantly conceived and wonderfully executed. True taste emerges from each dish. The food bursts with flavor that she seems to draw out of every ingredient, paired with each other, the meal choices are simply AMAZING. It is a tiny space with lovely wait staffers who are kind and quick. If only it didn't take two months to get a reservation, we would dine there more often as it is truly an elevated experience! Worth the delay in gratification from reserving to eating. "

  • "I loved everything about this place! It was small and cozy, the staff were friendly (even when I called multiple times to change the number of people in my party) and most importantly the food was fancy, and delicious. Such a great menu I just wish I could have tried one of each. (Also the bathroom was adorable.)"

  • "This place far exceeded my expectations. The food was interested, unusual and delicious! Everything was cooked perfectly, the service was great and the decor was very pleasant. I would definitely go back-it was certainly worth the long wait for a reservation. Go there if you like vegetarian food! "

  • "Menu reads good, and waitress completely on top of the ingredients and explanations, so sounds good too. Visually a feast for the eyes and sublime taste/texture combinations. Can't recommend highly enough. It's small, friendly, a bit noisy in that you are close to the conversations around you, and you can see the kitchen, but this all made for a relaxed chatty meal. Go if you can but don't be late; people wait for no-shows."

  • "The food here is absolutly amazing! We had wine, and started wuth the potato app & the jalepeno hush puppies... No words can even describe the flavors! The presentation was also perfect! We dined on the beet & corn entree. Both are funky, different & delicious for vegetarian and omnivores! We finished our meal off with the popcorn pudding.. It doesnt sound like much, but order it & thank me later"

  • "I'm an omnivore but my boyfriend is a vegetarian, so I took him to Dirt Candy for his birthday. First of all, it's hard to get a reservation because this pace is TINY. I got some attitude when I called so I booked through open table. Since it's so small, you are elbow to elbow wih other guests, listening to thier conversation and trying to pretend they can't hear everything you say. The food was delicious but not at all filling - we had hush puppies, the potato appetizer, and the beet and broccoli mains. They lost me at dessert, the vegan cheesecake roll was just a few steps too far from traditional cheesecake and the celery ice cream it came with tasted too earthy."

  • "Dirt Candy's menu is all vegetarian and all items are available vegan by request. The food is so phenomenal that your meat-eating friends will not notice they are eating veg. The food is absolutely delicious and full of flavor that presents each highlighted vegetable to the best foodie standards. The dishes are complex and beautifully presented. They are also surprisingly filling. Dirt Candy bypasses the usual veg dining issues of it's tasty, but just vegan junk food or it's fresh, but not filling. The wine list is full of surprising selections which pair perfectly with the dishes. It was definitely worth the 3 month wait to get a reservation! "

  • "I wanted to make a reservation for my birthday- and tried to do so 2 months in advance, but Dirt Candy was booked solid except for 10:30pm the next night. At the time I didn't know they held a little space for walk-ins. I took the 10:30 reservation almost in disbelief that any restaurant could be that good. Dirt Candy really IS that good. Our server was lovely, patient, and knowledgeable- I believe she gave us equally as great of service as her last table seated for the night that she would have for her first. Every morsel of food was prepared lovingly, presented beautifully, tasted extraordinary and was perfectly temped and timed. I will dine here at least every 6 weeks for the new menu! Bravo Amanda & team!"

  • "This small, but nicely designed restaurant does an amazing job preparing innovative and delicious vegetarian meals. Served by a friendly wait staff and presented beautifully, I can only praise this establishment for its tasty offerings. The flavors and textures left me wondering why I eat meat, anyway."

  • "We trek to the City at least annually from Baltimore specifically to eat at Dirt Candy. Amanda Cohen is a food genius, and we are always surprised and delighted at the combinations that shouldn't work but do, the creative thought that goes into tiny details, and the overall experience we always have at Dirt Candy. Can't wait to visit her new, larger, location. "

  • "Dining at Dirt Candy was a delight! The waitress was a sweetheart, knowledgeable about the menu, and very attentive. The food was out of this world! The bathroom was clean and smelled like fresh flowers. All in all I had a wonderful experience. Make a reservation now - you won't regret it!"

  • "Dirt Candy is NOT the place to go if you're a meat and potatoes person, but we (an adventurous vegetarian and vegan) loved it. As light eaters, we were happy sharing one snack, appetizer, main dish, and dessert. Our favorite bits were the jalapeno hush puppies, the salt-and-vinegar flavors in the "Potato!" appetizer, and the green pepper spaetzle in the "Pepper!" entree. I was a bit disappointed by the pudding for dessert - it was a little too sweet for my taste and was slightly watery, but the salted caramel popcorn was delicious (more, please). I think the kitchen made a mistake and gave my vegan husband real goat cheese - but the service was very friendly and helpful. It's well worth wrangling a reservation at this teeny-tiny restaurant!"

  • "My husband and I tried Dirt Candy for the first time on Friday night. We had a wonderful meal, although we had trouble choosing what to offer from many intriguing menu options. We decided to share 3 apps and one entre as our meal and this allowed us to sample more widely from the menu. We also enjoyed were sure to save room for desert. Loved the creativity, textures and tastes of the food as well as the intimate atmosphere of the dining room."

  • "It took 3 weeks to get a reservation at this restaurant and I now know why. Great Vegetarian and Vegan menu. Every crumb of every item was consumed. Soooo delicious and inventive! Staff was friendly and informative and moved the meal along. Maybe a bit too fast for leisurely dinning. But it was Saturday at 8 PM. That said I would go back without question and plan to. Can't wait until someone gives this chef and crew an investment to open a proper size restaurant."

  • "I've been lucky enough to dine here three times now, and each time I am overwhelmed by the wonderful service and rich flavors of the chef's take on vegetarian cuisine. I also appreciate their inclusion of a superb non alcoholic wine by the glass (not for kids, but great for adults who aren't drinking). I will always come back every chance I get!"

  • "Chef Amanda Cohen is comfortably in the top rung of NYC chefs of any persuasion, vegetarian or otherwise. The compact menu allows for extremely well thought out dishes, crafted to perfection each time. The menu evolves as the chef and her team come up with new ideas (e.g., recent innovation broccoli dogs, a tasteful dish one-ups its inspiration, the hot dog). The dishes are each complex, multi-tiered variations on a single vegetable, including terrific garnishes and sauces. That might mean multiple types of beets done in several ways on one plate. If there's ever a vegetable you have avoided, this is the place to try it. You could use a dart to pick your meal as every dish excels and, like your kids, you will love them equally."
