Diner Reviews
  • "After all these years, one still gets a sense of authentic at DiNotto. Good food, good value, difficult menu because of so many appealing choices."

  • "Dinotto was terrific for our quick dinner before an evening meeting at school. The valet kept our car for both dinner and our meeting which allowed us to linger over dinner longer than if we had needed to repark. I ordered the eggplant parmesan, which was prepared to order and served with walnuts, delicious. My dinner companion ordered the lasagna and loved it. The waiter put our leftovers in the fridge while we attended our meeting and we picked them up when we returned for the car. Really an expectedly terrific dinner. We'll be back with the whole family."

  • "When I visit the Windy City, rarely will I repeat a restaurant. This will be an exception. It was a delightful meal in a charming neighborhood spot. A real-deal Italian family place with a portrait of the venerated Papa by the door. Given the proximity to Second City, this will be a favorite pre-show dinner spot."

  • "Great for after Second City. A bit more upscale than I had expected; bill for 5 people was $112 without gratuity"

  • "Four great meals here, red wine, so-so Cosmopolitan, French bread (Italian with that needed salt :)) yummy pasta, fish, chicken. House salad was usual and service top notch. Great for before Second City."

  • "Wonderful food. Olga was our server and was attentive and sweet. The manager checked in and was friendly. Wine was great. Reasonably priced, a great find! Directly across North Avenue from Up Comedy Club/Second City."

  • "Our waiter, Dimitri, was informative, attentive and funny. The eggplant was full of flavor without being smothered in sauce. Don't get me wrong, the sauce was wonderful and had a great depth of taste. It was just nice to be able to enjoy the eggplant as well. The veal dish was enjoyed until the very end. If you are getting an entree I suggest you split one of the salads for your appetizer as they are very large."

  • "I'm going to start this review by saying my mom and Aunt are in town, both of whom are Italian. I was looking for a yummy neighborhood restaurant to take them to. Dinotto was perfect. Lovely ambiance, fantastic service and delicious food. They loved it. The eggplant parmesan is a must try!"

  • "Perfect example of why owners who really care produce the best-in food, atmosphere, and a totally enjoyable experience.. When you immediately feel as if you are among friends, you know you have found one of the best!"

  • "Food was alright but very pricey for no bigger than what the portions were. Service was great, waiter was very helpful."

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience. The food was excellent (best Lasagna ever), our waitress Olga was friendly and attentive, and the hostess was welcoming and accommodating. This was our first time there and we will definitely be back; looking forward to dining al fresco in the summer. One last note - the valet person was extremely courteous and helpful in spite of terrible, snowy weather. Everyone made our dining expereience memorable."

  • "Service was excellent, enjoyed the chicken rosemarino and the risotto was also delicious. It wasn't crowded at 6 p.m. so the noise level certainly wasn't an issue."

  • "If you live in the Gold Coast/Old Town area, Dinotto is the perfect place for a delicious dinner. Our server was very attentive and explained the menu and recommended several dishes. We opted for a pasta dish and chicken dish. Both were yummy. This restaurant was convenient to Second City, where we had tickets for the late show."

  • "My wife had the Restaurant Week menu and ordered a la carte. The best part of the meal was the bread pudding dessert. My caprese salad featured good-quality fresh mozzarella, but the out-of-season tomatoes were flavorless and too tough. My wife enjoyed her salmon entrée, but my veal Milanese wasn't very good - the meat was pounded too thin and the coating seemed to be a commercial product such as Golden Dipt (which is oft used for fried perch and fried smelts)."

  • "Enjoyed eating upscale food in a casual environment...Chopped was playing on the TV. Food was excellent. I especially liked the tomato based sauces...very fresh tasting. Service was outstanding. Can't wait to return in warmer weather to enjoy dining on the patio."

  • "Dinotto's was a great find. The food was terrific, the ambience was festive and the service extraordinary. The manager personally greeted us and took care of our special needs. The staff was very accommodating and helpful and made the evening fun for all of us. We would go back in a flash. Well done you!"

  • "Great neighborhood spot with great service but high priced for the quality of the food. The veal milanese was very tough and not worth the $22 price. The veal marsala was better since it came with the marsala sauce. I would go back for the pasta and would like to try the patio in the summer."

  • "There are so many reasons I keep coming back to this restaurant. Great food, Warm, friendly service and beautiful ambience. We stopped in for lunch this week, and the wonderful shrimp and risotto dish on the dinner menu was not on the lunch menu. The chef whipped it up for us anyway. Love this place!"

  • "This quaint Italian restaurant did not disappoint. My mother and grandmother were visiting Chicago this past weekend and I wanted to show them around the Old Town neighborhood. We started with the calamari - which was cooked to perfection - before moving to our main courses (Salmon, Chicken pasta, and Risotto). All three of our dishes were delicious! I ordered the salmon in white wine sauce with veggies, because I tried to stick with a healthy option. That said, the best dish of the night was my grandmother's chicken bow tie pasta, prepared in a cream sauce... MMMM... it was to die for. To top it all off, the restaurant surprised my grandmother (for her 91st bday) with a piece of tiramisu. DELICIOUS! I highly recommend this spot!"

  • "Went to this restaurant prior to attending a show at Second City. The waiter kept an eye on the time to head to the show, so we could just relax and enjoy dinner. The waitstaff was very friendly, engaging, and wanted to do anything to make the night special, add to that the food was to-die-for delicious. Must visit if you are in Chicago."

  • "The food was wonderful - I had the risotto. Our waiter was nice, but a little too inattentive. We wanted dessert but didn't see him for a long time and we had to get to our show."

  • "Food was good, service was good, noise level in the backroom was high."

  • "We had been to this restaurant several years ago, and loved it, but this time, it was a huge disappointment. The hostess was not friendly - actually rude. It took at least 15 minutes to get drinks. And even though we each only had entrees - no appetizers or salads - we were there an hour and 45 minutes, nearly making s late for the 8 p.m. show at Second Cit across the street. Even though the food was very good, the experience was not, and I doubt I'd go back."

  • "We have dined here on numerous occasions through the years - starting before they moved west to their current location. As usual, the food was excellent. There were 4 in our group- two ordered items from the daily specials and the others from the regular menu. Everyone complimented the quality and taste of their meals - all were excellent. Unfortunately, it was one of the slowest dining experience we have encountered. We did not order drinks, appetizers or salads and it took 1 hr from the time we ordered and received our meal. We arrived at 5:45 and ordered at 6:00 pm. The meal was worth the wait and the time would not have concerned us except as we explained we had theater tickets."

  • "Nice restaurant close to second city. Veal was very good. Fried callamari was a big disappointment. Service was excellent."

  • "Best thing about this restaurant is that it's right across the street from Second City, and that the staff are so lovely and professional. Unfortunately their kitchen let them down... dishes felt unbalanced, and in one case the bbq octopus was burnt (really charred)."

  • "I've been coming to Dinotto for years, but only about once a year as I have been living out of town. The food is always delicious - simple enough to appreciate the real and fresh ingredients (pastas are to die for) and flavors but more gourmet than I'd venture to make at home. Last time we ate at the bar and it was just as good as a table experience. The bartender recommended a great wine after asking about my preferences and giving me samples of two. The people are always friendly and attentive. I will keep going back - more often now!"

  • "Went back for the first time after a few years absent. I stopped going because I found the food to be average and the prices to be very expensive. Somethings never change average food with an expensive tab at the end of the night. The Caesar salad was very good and it Is one of the best in the city. The main course was very average though the chicken was a bit dry and the potatoes were overcooked."

  • "This is a great restaurant if you are headed to a Second City show and are interested in eating nearby the theatre while also in a romantic setting. This is certainly not the best Italian restaurant but the food is good enough and the ambiance is lovely."

  • "Dinotto's is pretty solid. I don't think there's anything outstanding or special here but it's consistently good. It has never been disappointing or gross, which is great, right?"

  • "I normally don't order pasta at restaurants, but this time I did, and I am glad (I got the Aurora pasta, it is kind of like a lasagne)! Their menu has a lot of great options. Fairly reasonable prices, too. The tiramisu was also excellent. Only thing I'd say could have been better was that we had to wait a little while for bread (but the pesto butter is really good)."
