A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Troy
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.

The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

  • "There is a black hair, spacy, girl who seats you when you arrive. She can never do her job right. You make a reservation on opentable, tell her your name, and she does not show you checked in. Not the first time, and there wasn't even a lot of customers. Guess she was too busy eating for all that thinking. Spacy is the best way I can describe her.they need to fix this....she has been there too long for this behavior."

  • "That's how tender the BBQ ribbons were at Dinosaur. Meats we sampled were all outstanding. The place was packed even on a Sunday night, though there was only minimal wait before being seated. The side portions are not large, but the sides are very good. I recommend Harlem potato salad in particular. They have a large selection of beers on tap."

Try the sweet potatoes and collard greens. Then as difficult as it will be, save room for the homemade key lime pie. Absolute food heaven. Not to be missed on any trip to the NY capital region."

The food is very close on the menu and is always excellent. I am actually very glad you did open your restaurant but only wished you would have opened one in Schenectady instead. Thanks for bring your great food and great help to the Capital District. It's my favorite restaurant . (PS. I forgot to mention the your food at the New York State Fair is by far is the best attraction at the Fair. Even there your food always has the same great quality.) Keep up the good work!!!!   • "I had no clue that there was more than one of these, it really doesn't have that chain sort of vibe to me. It has some of the best barbeque that I've seen. I brought my mom there one time and she continues to rave about it and tries to find something like it. I wholeheartedly recommend it."

  • "Dinosaur barbeque in Troy is probably some of the best barbecue in northern New England. from their amazing selection of taps and inexpensive flights from both the region in the world, to their delicious pork ribs smoked turkey, and assortment of delicious sides, it really is a grnuine place and makes the wait worth it. service was terrific and very quick, appetizers arrived quickly and our meals there after. My only complaint up on this visit is that the roll my sandwich was served on was stale which is kind of a simple but glaring issue. The food was all delicious otherwise so I really can't hold it against me, it's the barbecue that I'm going for not the rolls. It definitely rivals some of the best small joint I've been to down south."

Our greens were missing when a server brought our food, but our waitress quickly rectified the oversight. We ordered key lime pie for dessert, and it was superb. Our coffee was fair and not very hot. Although we made a reservation through Open Table, we had to wait approximately 15 minutes to be seated, which was very disappointing."

Food was fair and had desert. Best part of the meal. Now ready to leave. We waited 20 minutes and finally put on coats and were leaving when waitress showed up and apoligized that she had a big group. Her tip was appropriately small and we left feeling our business was not important."

  • "I shared a Sampler Appetizer for two and had the Sampler for my main course. There is great variety in the sides that can be ordered. I enjoyed the cole slaw and salad with house dressing, which was a good choice. Everything was delicious. The samplers provided a wide assortment to experience and all with great flavor, not too sweet, not too hot, just right. I visited from Pennsylvania on business, and had been to the Syracuse Dinosaur Bar-B-Que previously. The food at the Troy location was just the way I remembered it in Syracuse. The Troy location is at a nice setting on the riverfront, and seemed a bit more spacious. The service was attentive and welcoming."

  • "The DB is always excellent. Great food, reasonable prices and large portions. All the meat items and sandwiches are very tasty with authentic BBQ flavor. The sides are also real gems. Try the collard greens and Mac and cheese for a real side treat. Though the fried green tomatoes are pricey, they can't be beat and I never pass on them. Deserts are full size and a bargain too. Want good BBQ- you go here. Nothing else to say!"

  • "We have eaten at Dinosaur BBQ several times and always have a good meal. Service was good, but not outstanding, but they were very busy. Don't expect to bring home a "doggey bag" unless you are a light eater, as their portions are not generous. You still do leave full however (especialy if you eat their excellent cornbread). Only food quality issue is that their baked beans were too liquidy and the brisket did not need the jalapeno's on it."

  • "Whenever we are traveling through Troy on our way to upstate NY we try to time our trip so we can get dinner at Dinosaur BBQ. This time we used OpenTable to reserve a spot so we didn't have to wait, even though it was a busy Friday night. Dinosaur is not far off the highway, easy to find. Parking can be a pain on a weekend night though so take what spots you can get and be prepared to have to walk for two minutes. The walk back when your stomach is full will feel good! On this night the food was great as usual. The ribs were particularly awesome! . Brisket was ok, usually better. Loved the maple sweet potato. Great beer selection. Just wish I didn't have four more hours of driving ahead of me. Service was excellent."

  • "I have driven past this place so many times with my mouth watering each time. I decided to take my wife there to celebrate our wedding anniversary early and it was a great pick. We got there and were promptly seated because we made reservations before hand. The menu looked amazing and the prices were very reasonable considering the amount of time and effort and prep work that needs to be done. The food was off the wall! I do not recommend getting the appetizer sampler just order the wings as an appetizer. Their wings were out of this world. Our main dish was amazing as well, my wife ordered the 1/2 rack of ribs and I ordered the pulled pork with the brisket. I can't wait to go back! This place will be one of my most visited now!"
