A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Newark
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and old friends alike.

The Food:
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My friends and I always have a great time at the Dinosaur BBQ restaurant Newark, NJ. It's a great location near the Sports Center, Train Station, The Performing Art's Center, and much, much, more. You know, BBQ is not the main dish of food's in the North East so to have a place that mainly caters to that is super. Try out the Dinosaur BBQ Restauant and see for yourself."

  • "As was the case last time I went, I'm not sure why the service is so poor. Took us a good 10 minutes for the waiter to come and take our drink orders, and another 20 to get them. We asked for waters 3 TIMES, starting with our first interaction with the waiter, and we didn't get them until halfway through our meal, a good 50 minutes later. The food here takes a while, which is fine, but the waiter didn't come to check on us to refill our empty drinks while we waited. He finally took our order for a second round of drinks, but it took him so long to get them to us that we were left with nothing to drink for our meal - not even water. The waiter announced they were out of something we ordered when he brought the rest of the food."

  • "Decent location for Newark, quality and portion sizes fair, ribs were dry and a bit burnt. Probably will not return for food, more of a place for happy hour."

  • "Dino BBQ is one of my favorite places to take people from out of town! I know that when we go there were are going to get great service, great food, and tasty drinks! What I love most about this place is the staff. They are friendly, attentive, and reflect the best of our city!"

  • "I've gone to the Dinosaur BBQ location in Brooklyn many times and it is fantastic. My wife and I were in Newark for a show and decided to go to this location since we were in the area. The food just wasn't up to the standard that we are used to getting at Dinosaur. We both got brisket which was overly fatty and dry/chewy at the same time which is pretty odd. Typically fatty brisket is, at least, tender. The mac and cheese was very dry and mealy while it is normally to die for. My fries were fresh, fluffy, and hot and my wife's mashed potatoes and gravy were great. Other than that, the restaurant serves Pepsi which I don't like. I asked if they had root beer and the waiter said yes, but the root beer had no free refills. So, I had water."

  • "It was my wife and I first time eating at this restaurant and we have to say it was absolutely amazing food was delicious and the customer service was even matter will be back soon"

  • "I came in there with no expectations. We were seated in a booth near the kitchen and got to witness the uncleanly like manner the cooks prepare the food. In terms of food itself, it just was not good. The wings were great but the ribs were awful and dry. The sides sucked. Our waiter didn't even bother checking on us and we ended up waiting at least 30 min after we finished for him to find us. I will never go back nor do I recommend anyone going here. Also they don't validate parking anymore so you have to park in one of those lots as street parking is just not possible in Newark."

  • "I went with a group of co-workers for lunch. Turned out there were 2 additional people in the group, but they accommodated us. We were seated very quickly and our orders were taken within a reasonable amount of time. The waiter was attentive where we didn't have to seek him out for questions. The food was delicious according to all the participants. I would highly recommend this venue and plan on going there again!"

  • "Love the food and beer menu. I always order the combination platter of brisket, wings and ribs. My favorite sides are Gumbo and cole slaw. Prices are good, my entree was about $21. "

  • "Since I'm a huge fan of the original dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, I have to say the Newark version pales in comparison, in fact, I was especially disappointed in both the food preparation and the beer offerings. The ribs were tough and lacking the luscious smoky flavor we love. Ditto for the chicken. Many beer chices we're not available.....and this on Memorial Day weekend!!! Unacceptable!"

  • "The portions were very big. I loved the Wango Tango sauce. My daughters did not like the French fries though. If its your first time you must try the Swag sampler to just taste a variety of food as I did. Except for a waiter by the name of DeJan who was so rude he wouldn't take a pic the place was great!!"

  • "The service was great it was surprising they did not have fried green tomatoes on Mother's Day. That is why my mother wanted to come here. The stand alone tables are small especially when ordering apps and dinners and drinks but the great service made up for the short comings "

  • "Food was good as always ive been to the Dino BBQ in harlem on 125 and its pretty much held to the food to the same standard. Just on a smaller scale space wise even though i wouldve consider this one small. The server even though i cant recall the name was great and very attentive. And the decore is rustic as expected which i am a fan of. That pretty much sums it all up in a nut shell. "

  • "This place has a menu that looks great. Decor is lacking - sort of very beat-up and old. Clean though. Food was super expensive. 3 salmon fritters for $7 and other similar pricing. Presentation is awful - food is served like from a high school cafeteria but tastes pretty good. Deviled eggs, salmon fritters and potato salad were delicious. The s&s cole slaw was different and the sauce (piled on top) was almost bitter. Gumbo tasted good but had crunchy okra which is a no. Meat was very fatty."

  • "Worst Host I have ever encountered. Rude, and we were interacting with him for less then 1 minute. Ribs were pretty good, sauce was very good, cornbread was dry, Mac and cheese had to much pepper and was not to my taste. Salad dressing made the salad. Unfortunately bad location and parking cost $7 on top of dinner. "

  • "I only gave food and service 3 stars because the portion of food is extremely small compared to the Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester,NY and the food was slightly cool but other than that the food is awesome!!!! Just a little more food and hotter and everything would be 100%"

  • "My first Dinosaur Rib experience was at the Syracuse location. It was great in Syracuse and even better in New Jersey. The ribs are tender, flavorful and simply wonderful. Not only are the ribs tremendous but the sides are equally excellent. My wife had one of the specialty sandwiches and loved it as well. What a great restaurant, wonderful and attentive servers and great mixed drinks!"

  • "Perfectly smoked meats, carbs galore, cooked veggies a bit overdone (stick to fresh veggies if possible). Fries OK. Stick to choco desserts & note that no coffee refills were offered (small cup too!) Cold drink refills were offered freely, however."

  • "We were heading to NJPAC for a show and decided to have dinner at Dinosaur. Our waitress, Susie was incredible! She was attentive to our time, warm, friendly, generous with her recommendations and suggestions as requested (and spot on). When it came to the cole slaw, we couldn't decide which one so she brought us both to taste which made the decisions for the table. We are not an easy group of four - one vegetarian, one non-pork eater, one non-spice eater and one with night-shade issues and she made us all comfortable. We will be back again soon for very good food, drink and an incredible staff!"

  • "Arrived at 705 for 700 reservation. Waited 15 minutes to be seated. No place to sit or wait. Just had to stand next to greeter podium. Awkward. Couldn't sit at bar because had kids. Once seated, waiter slow to get order, bringing food, refills and check. Main meal good but sides smaller than I expected (maybe given name). It's really a sports bar not restaurant. Now that I know that I can adjust my expectations. Probably great after a game but not for lunch or dinner per se."

  • "We were given tickets for an event at the Prudential Center and wanted dinner beforehand. We selected the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que from those restaurants available on Open Table because our son-in-law loves ribs and the restaurant was so close to the Center. What a delightful surprise to find that we ALL (4 of us) loved the food and the service was both very punctual and friendly, without seeming harried. We look forward to getting back!"

  • "I had lunch at Dinosaur and this was the first time I was at the Newark location. The Brisket was just outstanding: moist and tender. Service was excellent. Great place for a business lunch in Newark when you want someplace casual. Also good location right next to Prudential Center. Only problem is parking is convenient, but not that cheap. If you are ever in Syracuse, you just can't get into Dinosaur because of the popularity of the place and they don't take reservations. I was pleasantly surprised that the Newark location takes reservations!!!! Same great BBQ!"

  • "We went here for our son's 17th birthday, and then went next door to a Devils game. The menu selection was so awesome we wished we could have ordered one of everything. We settled on some wings for an appetizer. They were big, meaty, tasty, juicy, and just plain amazing. They were so awesome we actually got a 2nd order!!! The entrees were equally impressive. Three in the group had combo platters that were to die for... including brisket, pulled pork, and other amazing stuff. I had the 1/2 fried chicken and it was the best meal I've had since moving to NJ seven months ago!!! Service was awesome, and so were the beers!!!"

  • "Went there after high school hockey championships. The service was wonderful. Hostess was a dream- so accommodating as I kept calling to change our reservation to later and later times and games went longer than anticipated. Our server Charles was so much fun! Made the excitement of our team's victory last even longer. Food was really good. What can I say everything about our experience here was fantastic."

  • "while the service was great and the food came out quickly quality was a spotty--wings and fried green tomatoes were great....entrees only so so and some of the food came out cold. the restaurant needs to strike a balance between turning over the tables quickly, good service and food quality or it will get the reputation of being just another chain restaurant"

  • "if you are going to an event at the Prudential Center, hit the Dinosaur Barbeque which is right next door. A wide range of foods to choose from, reasonable prices, and friendly atmosphere. You can make a reservation online, and if you're going to a show at 7:30, get an early reservation, like about 4:00!"

  • "Went on a Friday night with my son. The restaurant was crowded, but not packed. I am sure this caries depending on whether there is a game at the Prudential Center next door. We were quickly seated and service was attentive. My son remarked about the number of times he checked back with us. We started with fried green tomatoes which were very crispy and tasty. I had pulled pork and he had a brisket sandwich. Both were smoky and flavorful. Their regular BBQ sauce is a little sweet for my taste though it did complement the meat well. The serve Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA on draft so how bad could the experience be. We were out the door in 40 minutes which was ok for us though I imagine some might feel rushed."

  • "While my overall experience was excellent and I would go again, I was disappointed when I called the night before to change the number in my party from 4 -5, I was told I could only take the number down not up. I was placed on hold, then told my reservation was changed to a aparty of 5. When I arrived at the restaurant I was told I was still down for a party of 4. The manager did accomodate us after a couple of minutes, but it was a bit annoying."

  • "We had reservations for a group of 7 people for a birthday, and ended up having to wait over 30 min for a table. The table we were given was all the way in the "back" of the restaurant. Every time we ordered drinks, it took over 45 minutes to get them. The restaurant was out of ribs and almost all desserts. How is a BBQ restaurant OUT OF RIBS? Food order took over 1.5 hours to come out, and most of the food was luke warm. Manager did come to speak with us early on about the drink issue, but nothing improved after that. We were having trouble even getting them to bring us water. I think the food's not bad, but with service like that and the prices they charge it's not really worth the hype."
