A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Newark
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and old friends alike.

The Food:
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.Continued

  • "We came here for a double date. All of our food was fresh, flavorful and delicious. One of the best BBQ places I have ever been to. The atmosphere was great and the service was excellent. Nice selection of drinks as well. Definitely recommend!"

  • "Always a good food and friendly staff.. service is great! Gave us a call to confirm reservation and even ask for our orders ahead!"

  • "My first Dinosaur Rib experience was at the Syracuse location. It was great in Syracuse and even better in New Jersey. The ribs are tender, flavorful and simply wonderful. Not only are the ribs tremendous but the sides are equally excellent. My wife had one of the specialty sandwiches and loved it as well. What a great restaurant, wonderful and attentive servers and great mixed drinks!"

  • "Perfectly smoked meats, carbs galore, cooked veggies a bit overdone (stick to fresh veggies if possible). Fries OK. Stick to choco desserts & note that no coffee refills were offered (small cup too!) Cold drink refills were offered freely, however."

  • "We were heading to NJPAC for a show and decided to have dinner at Dinosaur. Our waitress, Susie was incredible! She was attentive to our time, warm, friendly, generous with her recommendations and suggestions as requested (and spot on). When it came to the cole slaw, we couldn't decide which one so she brought us both to taste which made the decisions for the table. We are not an easy group of four - one vegetarian, one non-pork eater, one non-spice eater and one with night-shade issues and she made us all comfortable. We will be back again soon for very good food, drink and an incredible staff!"

  • "Arrived at 705 for 700 reservation. Waited 15 minutes to be seated. No place to sit or wait. Just had to stand next to greeter podium. Awkward. Couldn't sit at bar because had kids. Once seated, waiter slow to get order, bringing food, refills and check. Main meal good but sides smaller than I expected (maybe given name). It's really a sports bar not restaurant. Now that I know that I can adjust my expectations. Probably great after a game but not for lunch or dinner per se."

  • "We were given tickets for an event at the Prudential Center and wanted dinner beforehand. We selected the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que from those restaurants available on Open Table because our son-in-law loves ribs and the restaurant was so close to the Center. What a delightful surprise to find that we ALL (4 of us) loved the food and the service was both very punctual and friendly, without seeming harried. We look forward to getting back!"

  • "I had lunch at Dinosaur and this was the first time I was at the Newark location. The Brisket was just outstanding: moist and tender. Service was excellent. Great place for a business lunch in Newark when you want someplace casual. Also good location right next to Prudential Center. Only problem is parking is convenient, but not that cheap. If you are ever in Syracuse, you just can't get into Dinosaur because of the popularity of the place and they don't take reservations. I was pleasantly surprised that the Newark location takes reservations!!!! Same great BBQ!"

  • "We went here for our son's 17th birthday, and then went next door to a Devils game. The menu selection was so awesome we wished we could have ordered one of everything. We settled on some wings for an appetizer. They were big, meaty, tasty, juicy, and just plain amazing. They were so awesome we actually got a 2nd order!!! The entrees were equally impressive. Three in the group had combo platters that were to die for... including brisket, pulled pork, and other amazing stuff. I had the 1/2 fried chicken and it was the best meal I've had since moving to NJ seven months ago!!! Service was awesome, and so were the beers!!!"

  • "Went there after high school hockey championships. The service was wonderful. Hostess was a dream- so accommodating as I kept calling to change our reservation to later and later times and games went longer than anticipated. Our server Charles was so much fun! Made the excitement of our team's victory last even longer. Food was really good. What can I say everything about our experience here was fantastic."

  • "while the service was great and the food came out quickly quality was a spotty--wings and fried green tomatoes were great....entrees only so so and some of the food came out cold. the restaurant needs to strike a balance between turning over the tables quickly, good service and food quality or it will get the reputation of being just another chain restaurant"

  • "if you are going to an event at the Prudential Center, hit the Dinosaur Barbeque which is right next door. A wide range of foods to choose from, reasonable prices, and friendly atmosphere. You can make a reservation online, and if you're going to a show at 7:30, get an early reservation, like about 4:00!"

  • "Went on a Friday night with my son. The restaurant was crowded, but not packed. I am sure this caries depending on whether there is a game at the Prudential Center next door. We were quickly seated and service was attentive. My son remarked about the number of times he checked back with us. We started with fried green tomatoes which were very crispy and tasty. I had pulled pork and he had a brisket sandwich. Both were smoky and flavorful. Their regular BBQ sauce is a little sweet for my taste though it did complement the meat well. The serve Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA on draft so how bad could the experience be. We were out the door in 40 minutes which was ok for us though I imagine some might feel rushed."

  • "While my overall experience was excellent and I would go again, I was disappointed when I called the night before to change the number in my party from 4 -5, I was told I could only take the number down not up. I was placed on hold, then told my reservation was changed to a aparty of 5. When I arrived at the restaurant I was told I was still down for a party of 4. The manager did accomodate us after a couple of minutes, but it was a bit annoying."

  • "We had reservations for a group of 7 people for a birthday, and ended up having to wait over 30 min for a table. The table we were given was all the way in the "back" of the restaurant. Every time we ordered drinks, it took over 45 minutes to get them. The restaurant was out of ribs and almost all desserts. How is a BBQ restaurant OUT OF RIBS? Food order took over 1.5 hours to come out, and most of the food was luke warm. Manager did come to speak with us early on about the drink issue, but nothing improved after that. We were having trouble even getting them to bring us water. I think the food's not bad, but with service like that and the prices they charge it's not really worth the hype."

  • "We arrived five minutes before our 6 pm reservation. The place was packed and we had to fight our way into the restaurant just to check in. We checked in and were given a questionable,"We'll do our best to get you seated." They were telling walk-ins it was a 2-3 hour wait.We were seated 20 minutes late but our server did come over right away.It took another 20 minutes for me to get my soda and 40 minutes for my husband to get his bottled beer.Dinner took an hour to get to our table but was surprisingly hot.We asked for the check as soon as our dinner arrived at the table. That took another 20 minutes. The staff did it's best on a tough day but the mess that we walked into and endured to eat dinner, was caused by what we perceived as bad mngt."

  • "I come from Syracuse, and one of the most popular items at that Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is the tres Hombres, which Newark did not offer. Also, my rib meat didn't fall off the bone, and my mac and cheese was cold. I had such high expectations from my experiences at the Syracuse location, and I was not impressed."

  • "Went here before a concert and they were so disorganized. People waited over 2 hours and rather then turn folks down they just keep adding names. The check in process took over 30 minutes and everyone was cramed in the small waiting area. Not the go to place if there's an event nearby."

  • "This was my first time time here, ive had several people recommend this resturant to me and I was not disappointed! Service was great and food awesome! What more coyld you want ? Definitely need to make a reservation for this place thow cause when i walked in I overhead the hostess sayin it was a 45 min wait for 4 people and it was Sunday night! But this seems to be the norm anytime I tey to get a reservation for the one by me they dont have any available but you can take your chance of waitin! Def a place to try!"

  • "When we identified ourselves as having open table reservations, the greeter said that didn't matter. We asked that they confirm we were there and they did. We ordered appetizers and entrees and specified that we wanted them served separately. Halfway thorugh the appetizer, the entree was slapped on the table. The fried green tomato was very good. The chicken wing was pithy. The brisket was dry and rather flavorless. The St. Louis ribs had a thick, unpleasant crust rather than a rub. The turkey neck greens were very nice. All in all a very disappointing dinner."

  • "Promptly seated upon arrival. Food and service were excellent. Only issue was that the inconsistency (taste) of the drinks - surprising considering they were in their signature drink category. Overall, a pleasant visit. Will return."

  • "The only real BBQ restaurant in NJ. Real hickory smoked BBQ ribs, brisket, pork, chicken. Don't miss the fried green tomatoes and wings in chipotle garlic sauce. Both were great. Small plates with three of each, great for sampling. Wife is no BBQ fan...but she had a melt in your mouth flank steak she absolutely loved. I had the three meat combo with great cole slaw and gumbo sides. The St. Louis ribs are the best and were BBQ perfection. The brisket was great too with a nice smoky flavor. The pork was tasty but a bit mushy for my taste. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and gave us a detailed and accurate description of each menu item. Service was timely as well. All in all great authentic BBQ at reasonable prices."

  • "The only ribs I've had that can compare are in Texas. Much better than other bbq alternatives in NJ and, for that matter, NYC."

  • "Being raised on bones and brews in Dinosaur BBQ's first location in Syracuse, NY, I find their expansion into (now) a chain of several restaurants in the tri-state area somewhat lacking. Their Newark location in the shadow of the Prudential Center, this Sunday afternoon, was quiet - compared to (what I imagine) is an insane asylum on game day - yet our meal did not benefit from any additional attention to detail. Service and food were adequate but nothing more. My shirt steak meal consisted of two four inch pieces of steak, one thin enough to be crispy on the ends, French fries cooked into a chunk and baked beans which looked like refries. All this with pints of beer priced at $6 and $7. Service adequate. I guess location is everything."

  • "We went to Dinosaur BBQ for some ribs. Both the food and service were very poor. They ran out of ribs. Very disappointing to go to a place known for their for ribs and they run out. Our server was very slow and inattentive. After we ordered we had to wait 40 minutes for our food. The people sitting next to us arrived and ordered after us, but had their meals 10 minutes before we had ours. A manager came by to ask us questions about our service and acknowledged that we had waited a long time to get our food. She took notes, but never did anything to speed up our service or offer a drink or dessert to try to improve our experience. Our food, when it finally did come, was lukewarm at best. Really disappointing experience."

  • "I think with a bit of training the restaurant would be so much better. They could not find the reservation at first. It's a good thing I printed it out. When I asked for a booth they said it would be a few minutes which was fine. However, another party who arrived after us was seated at a booth shortly before us which was not OK. When the waitress dropped the plates she asked if everything was all right. We did not even have a chance to taste anything yet.The chicken my friend ordered and my wings were cooked on point and well seasoned. Some of my food was cold, not tepid, but actually cold. The manager came over and replaced the food. Then the waitress came back and said the replacement was "on her" . Are they kidding? I will not return."

  • "Great place to go to before an event at Pru center, or just go to for dinner or lunch. Very good BBQ food, with lots to choose from. There also is a great list of beers!!! The staff is friendly ans curtious. Very energnic and fun atmosphere!"

  • "The food was pretty good but the service was fair at best and street parking is difficult in the area. It is a great place to go if you are attending an event at the Prudential Center because it is right smack next door."

  • "Service was not only excellent, but fun. Our table was perfectly chosen by the restaurant to accomodate a party of 6 so that we could have great conversation but still be a part of the atmosphere. The Pulled Pork dishes were amazing as were the ribs. The side dishes were great and we tried most of them. Everyone (including a bar-b-que affectionado) had nothing but praise for the selection, quality of the food, as well as the robust flavors. This was a fun place to celebrate a birthday. There was a local group playing live music, the bar area was lively and we have plans to return."

  • "Ribs cooked to perfection; mouthwatering brisket; thick, creamy mac 'n cheese; smoked wings; whipped sweet potatoes; and great local beers to go along with it. This place never disappoints (except for the fact that they ran out of the Jack Daniels chocolate pecan pie). Best time to go and avoid insane crowds is when there's not a hockey game or other well-attended event at the Pru Center. We went on a night there was a Seton Hall b-ball game. Place was still pretty crowded, but not nearly what it's like before a Devils game. And service was great, too. We asked the waitress to bring out our toddler's meal first so she'd be occupied - came out quickly, and our server went out of her way to make sure we were okay."

  • "We arrived early and were accomodated politely right away. The food was standard and in many respects boring coming from such a well known place. I have had much more flavorful and authentic bbq in the city and at a nearby chain. That being said...the convenience of its location makes up for the lack of a wow factor with the food. If you are a fan of standard fare it is fine but if you have more of a refined pallet there are many excellent options Newark serving authentic Portuguese and Brazilian fare that are more worthy of a visit."

  • "My husband and I both enjoyed the Combo dish. The beef brisket was very good. The only complaint I have was that the food did not come out hot. I would say a little warm slightly above room temperature. I enjoy my food hot. Overall we did enjoy our meal as well as our children who ordered off the kids menu. We would return!"

On a crowded game night, they honored our reservation, service was outstanding, Anthony one of the bartenders was waiting that evening and service was great. Good was back to it's usually good BBQ and tried the Donkey Punch, highly recommended."

  • "Dinosaur BBQ is my favorite spot when I head to the Prudential Center. I always make a reservation because it is usually packed on game days or concerts. The Ultimate BLT is amazing! Fried green tomatoes are fabulous. During our last visit, our server was Christian and he was wonderful. Even though the place was jam packed with customers, he was attentive and a pleasure to chat with. Love this place:)"
