A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Newark
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and old friends alike.

The Food:
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.Continued

  • "It's Newark - It's a small chain. The food was ok- not great. The service was ok - not great. We tried Dinosaur BBQ. We don't need to go back. There are too many other restaurants out there"

  • "It's the Dinosaur...what could there possibly be to complain about?!?"
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "The food is always terrific at Dinosaur. Especially the Ribs, Wings and Mac and Cheese. Our waitress, Felicia, was outstanding and only added to a wonderful dining experience. My family loves this place!!"

  • "The ribs were very disappointing! Meaty, dense, flavorless... the korean ribs were not good either; however, their flavor was great. The chicken wings were great, the collard greens were not. Will not return."

  • "Had and paid extra for Korean beef ribs. They were indelible fatty and gristle, could not even cut through them. Other food was average and portions small for the price Also made reservations but eneded up with lousy table. Seems like they scrambled to find a spot."

  • "Overall I give this restaurant an average rating. The food is mediocre but our server was great - very friendly and attentive. We were there for a late dinner and so I feel like the ribs and brisket I ordered had been under a heat lamp for an hour or so and was a little tough instead of tender and juicy like I would have preferred. All in all, I would not recommend Dinosaur Bar-B-Que to anyone and most especially my friends. I consider myself a food enthusiast and found myself anything but enthused at this BBQ joint!"

  • "I loved the "gluten free" option. I will visit again."

  • "Overall experience was a nice night out. There were key dishes that hit the spot like the pulled pork. Nice beer selection as well. Would have liked it more if the table we sat at didn't topple over."

  • "Dino BBQ has a great location right next to Prudential Center where My family and I went to see an event that day in Newark. My wife and I shared the full rack of ribs w/4 sides, it was really good. My kids order from kids menu, plenty of food for kids. If I go to author event at The Rock, I will certainly eat at Dino BBQ again."

  • "The BBQ ribs were delicious. The beer was cold. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was pleasant. Will definitely return."

  • "So glad you added the boiled shrimp back on the menu even if it is only a 1/4 lb portion on the pick 2/3 entrees. Great turkey neck green, bbq beans and slaws. We took some friends who had not been to the Newark restaurant and discovered we'd all been to the Syracuse and Rochester sutes."

  • "As was the case last time I went, I'm not sure why the service is so poor. Took us a good 10 minutes for the waiter to come and take our drink orders, and another 20 to get them. We asked for waters 3 TIMES, starting with our first interaction with the waiter, and we didn't get them until halfway through our meal, a good 50 minutes later. The food here takes a while, which is fine, but the waiter didn't come to check on us to refill our empty drinks while we waited. He finally took our order for a second round of drinks, but it took him so long to get them to us that we were left with nothing to drink for our meal - not even water. The waiter announced they were out of something we ordered when he brought the rest of the food."

  • "My friends and I always have a great time at the Dinosaur BBQ restaurant Newark, NJ. It's a great location near the Sports Center, Train Station, The Performing Art's Center, and much, much, more. You know, BBQ is not the main dish of food's in the North East so to have a place that mainly caters to that is super. Try out the Dinosaur BBQ Restauant and see for yourself."

  • "Decent location for Newark, quality and portion sizes fair, ribs were dry and a bit burnt. Probably will not return for food, more of a place for happy hour."

  • "Dino BBQ is one of my favorite places to take people from out of town! I know that when we go there were are going to get great service, great food, and tasty drinks! What I love most about this place is the staff. They are friendly, attentive, and reflect the best of our city!"

  • "Delicious. I was skeptical - but was sooooo very surprised !!!!"

  • "I've gone to the Dinosaur BBQ location in Brooklyn many times and it is fantastic. My wife and I were in Newark for a show and decided to go to this location since we were in the area. The food just wasn't up to the standard that we are used to getting at Dinosaur. We both got brisket which was overly fatty and dry/chewy at the same time which is pretty odd. Typically fatty brisket is, at least, tender. The mac and cheese was very dry and mealy while it is normally to die for. My fries were fresh, fluffy, and hot and my wife's mashed potatoes and gravy were great. Other than that, the restaurant serves Pepsi which I don't like. I asked if they had root beer and the waiter said yes, but the root beer had no free refills. So, I had water."

  • "It was my wife and I first time eating at this restaurant and we have to say it was absolutely amazing food was delicious and the customer service was even matter will be back soon"

  • "I came in there with no expectations. We were seated in a booth near the kitchen and got to witness the uncleanly like manner the cooks prepare the food. In terms of food itself, it just was not good. The wings were great but the ribs were awful and dry. The sides sucked. Our waiter didn't even bother checking on us and we ended up waiting at least 30 min after we finished for him to find us. I will never go back nor do I recommend anyone going here. Also they don't validate parking anymore so you have to park in one of those lots as street parking is just not possible in Newark."

  • "I went with a group of co-workers for lunch. Turned out there were 2 additional people in the group, but they accommodated us. We were seated very quickly and our orders were taken within a reasonable amount of time. The waiter was attentive where we didn't have to seek him out for questions. The food was delicious according to all the participants. I would highly recommend this venue and plan on going there again!"

  • "Love the food and beer menu. I always order the combination platter of brisket, wings and ribs. My favorite sides are Gumbo and cole slaw. Prices are good, my entree was about $21. "

  • "The portions were very big. I loved the Wango Tango sauce. My daughters did not like the French fries though. If its your first time you must try the Swag sampler to just taste a variety of food as I did. Except for a waiter by the name of DeJan who was so rude he wouldn't take a pic the place was great!!"

  • "Since I'm a huge fan of the original dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, I have to say the Newark version pales in comparison, in fact, I was especially disappointed in both the food preparation and the beer offerings. The ribs were tough and lacking the luscious smoky flavor we love. Ditto for the chicken. Many beer chices we're not available.....and this on Memorial Day weekend!!! Unacceptable!"

  • "The service was great it was surprising they did not have fried green tomatoes on Mother's Day. That is why my mother wanted to come here. The stand alone tables are small especially when ordering apps and dinners and drinks but the great service made up for the short comings "

  • "This was my first dining experience at any Dinosaur BBQ and I will return. The food was amazing, and the staff were all attentive to my needs. A true great dining experience...kudos to Dinosaur BBQ. "

  • "Food was good as always ive been to the Dino BBQ in harlem on 125 and its pretty much held to the food to the same standard. Just on a smaller scale space wise even though i wouldve consider this one small. The server even though i cant recall the name was great and very attentive. And the decore is rustic as expected which i am a fan of. That pretty much sums it all up in a nut shell. "

  • "This place has a menu that looks great. Decor is lacking - sort of very beat-up and old. Clean though. Food was super expensive. 3 salmon fritters for $7 and other similar pricing. Presentation is awful - food is served like from a high school cafeteria but tastes pretty good. Deviled eggs, salmon fritters and potato salad were delicious. The s&s cole slaw was different and the sauce (piled on top) was almost bitter. Gumbo tasted good but had crunchy okra which is a no. Meat was very fatty."

  • "Worst Host I have ever encountered. Rude, and we were interacting with him for less then 1 minute. Ribs were pretty good, sauce was very good, cornbread was dry, Mac and cheese had to much pepper and was not to my taste. Salad dressing made the salad. Unfortunately bad location and parking cost $7 on top of dinner. "

  • "I only gave food and service 3 stars because the portion of food is extremely small compared to the Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester,NY and the food was slightly cool but other than that the food is awesome!!!! Just a little more food and hotter and everything would be 100%"

  • "We came here for a double date. All of our food was fresh, flavorful and delicious. One of the best BBQ places I have ever been to. The atmosphere was great and the service was excellent. Nice selection of drinks as well. Definitely recommend!"

  • "My first Dinosaur Rib experience was at the Syracuse location. It was great in Syracuse and even better in New Jersey. The ribs are tender, flavorful and simply wonderful. Not only are the ribs tremendous but the sides are equally excellent. My wife had one of the specialty sandwiches and loved it as well. What a great restaurant, wonderful and attentive servers and great mixed drinks!"

  • "Perfectly smoked meats, carbs galore, cooked veggies a bit overdone (stick to fresh veggies if possible). Fries OK. Stick to choco desserts & note that no coffee refills were offered (small cup too!) Cold drink refills were offered freely, however."
