A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.

The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great place, friendly service, good food. Always make a reservation, if you can, because you can wait a long time without one. It's always worth it!"

  • "It was amazing .. food was great the server was awesome best birthday dinner I had"

  • "Waitress needs to be a bit quicker, however. Drinks were awesome."

  • "Best ribs I have had in Manhattan, meaty and juicy. You want to come very hungry, and with reservations or you will wait and wait. The place is packed for dinner."

  • "Based on the glowing reviews, I made a reservation to Dino BBQ expecting a casual evening of amazing food. The experience was mediocre at best. It took a while to get our food, granted she did lose our food order and by the time she returned to retake the order the kitchen was out of our appetizer order. The vegetables were over cooked and swimming in grease, the carrot, cranberry salad was heavily marinated in mayo and the honey corn bread was stale, I've had better at Boston Market. The catfish was well flavored and the ribs and chicken were decently seasoned, however not a great representation of great southern comfort food or amazing BBQ."

  • "the Dinosaur has a great concept when it comes to food and customer service. last meal was on the money, timely and efficient service, very little wait time and laid back however professional service. only complaint would be the noise level, a bit loud especially when having dinner."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "I've had my fair share of good bbq, but the food here is up on the next level. There was not a single thing I ate that I did not think it was the best I had; from the ribs right down to the deviled eggs."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Food was delish and staff extremely friendly, but ( on our Fri 7 pm, anyway) impossible to be heard over hollering riot of noise around us. Quitter lunch time much ore pleasant."

  • "The Best spareribs ever. Lots of meat and great taste. Good service."

  • "Been to and have recommended this fantastic BBQ joint a number of times. I thought it would be far inferior when they moved down the street, but it is still up to its normal, awesome standards. Every entree is worth the order, but it is the side dishes that are killer. If you don't order the Syracuse potatoes, your life will be far less richer. Even the walls are fun to look at, if there us a lull in conversation. The service is really nice, starting with the host, the server, and bus persons. It can get busy, so make reservations if you can. When awesome is normal, I go with normal..."

  • "most of the time dinosaur bbq is delicious. this time they were miSsing something. the food was bland and they first messed up my order. I hope they fix it rather than let it go."

  • "Love this place. The food never disappoints. Not a place to be if you're on a diet. The Brisket, Ribs and especially the Fried Green Tomatoes. You have to deal with crowds and sometimes long waits if you want a table, but you have an option of the bar and hi-top seats if it's a party of two. Lucky me, I live nearby so I can easily take my order to-go. The pier nearby makes a great place to bring your to-go food and have your own mini picnic."

  • "Ribs are cooked to the point where the meat falls off the bones & are very tasty although a bit fattier than I would have liked. Sides leave something to be desired. If you happen to be on 12th Ave & need a bite to eat, check it out."

  • "My husband and I have been to Dinosaur BBQ several times and the food and service is always excellent. We highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Great place for delicious bar-b-que! Well worth traveling to Harlem for good food and drink. Families as well as couples will enjoy the casual non-pretentious "authentic" food and decor. Have brought our friends from Texas and Manhattan and everyone always has a great time! Lots of fun and satisfied tummies!"

  • "We have made Dinosaur BBQ our Fourth of July tradition. The food couldn't be more amazing. We went through two racks of ribs, the pork/chicken/brisket combo and a set of wings – with a bunch of sides – for four people. It's a fun place with an atmosphere that is unique in NYC. Highly recommend."

  • "Not one one time did our waitress ask if we needed anything, we had to keep signaling her she was at the kiosk eating while I waited for my drink I could see at the bar. Bad service and mediocre bbq"

  • "This was my first time experiencing Dinosaur BBQ. I took my team to lunch and they enjoyed it. I do not eat any type of red meat so i don't think i was able to have the full experience of the BBQ ribs etc. I did order the catfish and it was pretty good. Would i dine here again, for sure. I would like for them to expand their dessert menu. As for the customer service our waitress N'Tasha provided us with good service. Great location."

  • "It was a decision that me and my cousins made, a family dinner and it was well worth the trip. It is not a place for you to go often but it is certainly well worth to go there occasionally. Food was delicious ."

  • "We we scheduled lunch or as part of our tour of Harlem sites. From the moment we walked in to the offer of dessert we had a wonderful time. Our waitress was extraordinarily cheerful and very helpful in determining what we should taste. The portions were very large and the food was delicious. A large selection of beers complemented the meat very well. Highly recommend if you like barbecue."

  • "Love going here, try to go every few months, can be expensive but so worth the wait and the taste. Big place, Make reservations if possible, sometimes its a wait. So don't go hungry unless you plan on hanging at the bar and waiting for a while. But all worth it."

  • "Food is amazing !!! But service was horrible waited 10 min for a fork"

  • "Essentially this place is popular and has amazing food and is a great spot for groups and couples just looking for a energetic spot . The hostess however needs to be more aware of customers opposed to talking to her peers instead of taking the time to seat customers and make it a more personal experience . The waiter needs to know the food and taste opposed to just saying everything i great . we purchased three drinks reccomended by him of which he did not state was so strong . let us know what dish is most popular and why it is"
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Food was awesome! Service could have been better but it was acceptable especially with how busy it always is. We were glad at how quickly we were seated with our reservation as well! Awesome restaurant, we will definitely be back and bring friends!"

  • "My fried green tomatoe's were very good and my husbands chili was excellent. Our main course ribs were not what we expected and our waiter was terrible."

  • "Our group of 8 was seated in a private booth in the bar area. Our waitress was exceptional as she managed our table with ease along with the other bar tables. Food here is always excellent-my personal faves include pulled pork, rib eye, cat fish, and by all means the salt potatoes! The greens are the best I have ever had. Normally I go for a flight of beers as the on tap selection is extensive but this visit I loved the white sangria which came in a tall glass with brandy soaked peaches. Don't wait-go now!"

  • "Dinosaur BBQ gives New Yorkers an opportunity to eat some great barbque."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "After hearing about Dinosaur and driving past it for years, I was excited to try it but was disappointed. Corn bread was dry, service is factory like (but terrific waitstaff seem to do the best with what they're given). Food arrives on trays with plastic plates for sides. Very cheap feel. BBQ was just ok, nothing to return for."

  • "I been here three times in this past year. This last time I went we all received the wrong order and the food wasn't that good. The only good thing was the dessert."
    Dined on 6/17/2014
  • "Wonderful ribs, delicious pork and brisket. Efficient and courteous service. You have to make reservations on certain nights because it gets very crowded. My husband and I had the "sweetheart deal"--a full rack of ribs and 4 sides for $31.00, a bargain and the food was plentiful. My only issue was the noise which can't be helped because it's a huge restaurant. Many families were eating with little kids. I wish the roof was open to all, it would be fantastic and romantic to dine with a view. Go there for the ribs."

  • "I have been to Dinosaur several times before, this time I was not that happy. The room was very warm, when asked if the AC could be turned up, I was told it was at full capacity. We were a table of 5 had to ask for plates to be brought to the table. We asked for a pitcher of water and got only 4 glasses. We ordered a very large sampler tray. Got a nice supply of ribs and chicken, but only three or may be 4 slices of brisket. They brought to our table three sides, and one of which was wrong. Had to ask for extra napkins(Mind you this is a BBQ RESTAURANT) Food was just OK nothing to scream about."

  • "Overrated, not the best bbq in town. Not kid friendly and the noise is unbearable, I cannot believe people wait 90 minutes to eat here!"
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Decent BBQ, pleasant service, lots of people celebrating occasions the night we were there."
