A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.

The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

The Dinosaur which started as a biker BBQ restaurant in Syracuse NY has expanded. And we are grateful! The one in Brooklyn is nice but the one in Harlem is the best. Lively, great staff, great beers and great food. And now reservations are again available on Open Table. It all worked perfectly.

I was introduced to Dino BBQ in 2010 and I've been hooked ever since. From the food to the drinks and the warm ambiance you will love it. My favorite menu item is the Korean Style Ribs w/Mac n Cheese & BBQ Rice. Whether its you and your spouse or a large party, you are guaranteed to enjoy yourself. Thank you for making my 36th birthday memorable & enjoyable!

I ordered the sweetheart deal which was a bargain, but the ribs didn't seem as good as they were when I was there last -- the deal came with a full rack of ribs, plus four sides. The beers were reasonably priced, as were the drinks, although I have a problem with a jigger-measured drink as opposed to "free pour." The place fills up quickly and gets quite noisy, but we enjoyed our dinner. Our waitress was very disinterested and she was the main disappointment.

We had a quick dinner at Dinosaur before heading to see Book of Mormon, so the restaurant was fairly quiet due to the early hour. Very easy to get to on the subway. Started with the original fried green tomatoes (good, not great) and the deviled eggs (very good). We both had combos and enjoyed all of the meat we tried (pork, ribs and brisket), but the brisket was definitely the standout. I'm not a big beef fan, but it was some of the tastiest beef I've ever had. We tried a variety of sides as well, and found the bbq beans to be oddly sweet, but the rest (mac and cheese, simmered greens, cole slaw) to be good additions. Had the Ape Hanger beer to accompany our meal and thought it was a very tasty pale ale.

I've been a frequent diner at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Harlem in the past two years, with a family member in the neighborhood; it's a great, lively atmosphere and up until my last visit, no matter how busy, the service was always swift and professional. On Labor Day, however, the food was a bit off and the service was a LOT off. The server took a long time to tell me that the beer I ordered wasn't available, and then took a long time —when we were well into the appetizer — to deliver the substitute beer. (And later didn't take the first beer off the bill!) She also misunderstood one of the sides I ordered. The ribs, which I frequently get, were much more fat than meat, and the baked beans were more watery and bland than usual.

Dinosaur bbq is located in a great place near the water in w 125 st in Harlem. It's a very relaxed atmosphere. Service was a little slow and the waitress passed by us several times before she remembered we asked for Easter. We ordered the three meats dish. The pulled pork was to mushy. The ribs are good and the brisket ok. The fried rice is delicious however it was a very small portion. The coleslaw was a nice size portion and very good. I have visited this venue several times and will continue to visit..overall it's mostly the location that gets my attention. The food is ok.

I wanted to treat my mother to a Sunday dinner for her birthday. Since she likes bbq I felt that Dinosaur would be a good choice and a good choice it was. She had the jerk smoked salmon and it was spot on. I had a combinatiom dinner with ribs, brisket and chicken which hit the spot. Our waitress was extra friendly and my mothet raved about the cheesecake she had for dessert. This is on top of the great time I had with friends at dinosaur from a previous ocassion. This place is highly recommended. Just be sure to make a reservation. That place fills up pretty quick.

My partner and I decided late in the afternoon that we wanted BBQ and decided to book a table online for 9pm! We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and were warmly greeted. We were escorted to a nice big banquette a few minutes later despite hearing the hostess quote upwards of 1.5hr wait times for other guests. Once seated, our server greeted us and informed us she would be right back (she was carrying drinks to another table). Upon her return, we asked a few questions about the cocktails/beer and she quickly guided us to our selection. We ordered the Sweetheart Platter and weren't disappointed. 12-delecate ribs, greens, BBQ beans, mac'n cheese and potato salad were superb! Overall, a great evening and will return!

Although we went on a week night, the place was packed, a good sign! We had to wait only a couple of minutes to be seated and the waitress was very helpful and attentive. She came by our table several times during our meal to make sure everything was OK. I had the quarter rack, whipped mashed sweet potatoes and potato salad, all pretty good. I shared the fruit cobbler with my friend; it had a so-so taste. Next time I'll get the key lime pie, which was exceptional the last time I had it. But my overall experience here was great so I am happy I ate here.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting and lighthearted. My son and I need to eat gluten free and we had no problem ordering delicious entrees…I had the vegetarian portobello with cheese(no bun) and the carrot salad and he had the pulled pork. My husband had the barbecue chicken and pulled pork platter. We all enjoyed every bite! We also cannot wait to return.

We went to the Dinosaur for good bar-b-que and the rockin' blues of Jimy Graham and left as satisfied possible and wondering if we could have had this good of a time anywhere else in the city! The service was top notch, the food (we had the ribs & pulled pork) could not have been better and the entertainment (no cover charge!)was superior! Jimy Graham might be the best bluesman you never heard of. He works a two hour set with the sincere enthusiasm and love for the music that's so contagious that even if you had never heard the blues before, he would make you an instant fan! We offer our heart felt thanks to the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que for providing us one helluva night in NYC!

Went here many many years ago and kept wanting to come back. Finally made it for my birthday and really enjoyed the food. Definitely far better than most of the BBQ available in NYC. My wife was even a little put out that I hadn't taken her to Dinosaur BBQ before. Only hitch is it's crazy busy. Reservations are a must. The sheer volume of people makes service a bit spotty. We got seated very quick thanks to the reservation, however the table next to us were seated later but got their water, drinks and food first. Still, the service was friendly and the food made it worth while. We'll absolutely be going back again.

The restaurant itself is nice and a great addition to the neighborhood, but service needs to improve dramatically. The drinks at the bar were yummy and a great way to start off my experience at the restaurant. The hostesses seemed a bit aloof and unaware of how their faces looked. People want to be greeted by a friendly smile, not raised eyebrows. The server almost spilled our food all over us. I was promised a side thay was missing from my order, which never arrived, and was still listed on the bill. Busboy broke glass a little too close to my table and didn't really seem apologetic about the situarion. The bread was soggy instead of crispy for the Cuban Sandwich and the chicken in the Chow Chow sandwich was moist, but lacked flavor.
