A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.

The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

Diner Reviews
  • "Dont think this place needs an introduction. It surely delivered everything I'd hoped for. Fantastic ribs, insane brisket and a great and friendly atmosphere. I would go back everyday if I could :)"

  • "Great ribs and sides, love the Tres Hombres combo. Always really slow service here! Any drink order or just getting another brew takes 15 minutes. On Saturday we were almost finished with our appetizers before we got our drinks. Our waiter was clueless. I asked what beers he had, he walked away and got a menu, that took him 5 minutes. Telling me the beers would have taken 30 seconds."

  • "I love love love Dinosaur Bar-b-Que!! As an Upstate Girl, this one actually beats the original in Syracuse, because they have Syracuse salt potatoes on the menu year round, not just seasonally as they do in Cuse! A last trip to Dinosaur was on my NYC bucket list before moving to SF and my first time friends, doubters at first because of the trek to 125th, became fans the moment the Fried Green Tomatoes crossed their lips. We followed up with an order of Wango Tango Wings! As the ordering expert, I got Memphis style pulled pork sandwich with a side of Mac and, of course, the aforementioned Syracuse salt potatoes!!!! Anywhere in NYC you can get a pint of dinosaur ape hanger ale for $5 or a Genny Cream Ale and shot of Beam for $6 rocks!"

  • "Great Food, Awesome sized portions, we brought 2 kids, high-chair and crayons,.... Food was great, Service is average, non-pro, but should you really expect that in a BBQ place? I would have ordered several more round of drinks, and it would be just a PLUS point if they would pack your take-away order instead of just handing you the to-go boxes (even though they did it with a smile) Prices are ok, Portion sizes are big, just a bit more attention on the service part and it could be a BBQ favorite!"

  • "Being a smoker myself, I'm very critical of BBQ places these days. I thought Dinosaur was a delight. The food was superb, the place itself wasn't fancy but BBQ places rarely are. Luckily I made reservations as they were extremely busy at 6:00 PM. When we left about 2 hours later, it was still packed. Very nice to see. We started off with chicken wings dry.I like to put on my own sauce. From the smoker to the grill to our plates they were amazing. Crispy outside and juicy inside. I couldn't ask for anything better. St. Louis style ribs for dinner. I ordered a whole rack (the best deal in my mind) and I finished half. They were made to perfection. They were very easy to cut and the meat just fell off the bone. I can't wait to go back."

  • "Went for son's birthday dinner with 8 family members in party. Food was excellent and all had a good time. Service was not good at all. Took too long to take main course order, waiter just disappeared for long periods of time, and it took forever to clear table after dinner. It is a fun place and food is terrific. Willing to chalk up service snafus this time to a bad day -- we would go back."

  • "My hubs, 10 YO daughter, and I went out of our way to go to Dinosaur for lunch, and our expectations were high. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was sufficiently dark, funky, and smoky to pass for an old BBQ joint. The sausage and brisket were both wonderful, as were the green beans, mac/cheese, and cornbread. My daughter ate all of her cheeseburger, which doesn't usually happen! The hostess and our server were on top of things, so we never "needed" anything. My daughter got a kick out of the graffito'd restroom, and says the next time we're there, that she's bringing a Sharpie! We didn't get to try any of the desserts, which is sad, as I bet they're great too. We're from Texas so we know BBQ, and Dinosaur BBQ rocks!"

  • "Delicious food but you shouldn't seat young children by the bar when that seat could have been for a childless couple. I would have had a better experience if I was seated in a different location. The hostess was like take it or leave it, otherwise I would have to wait 35 more minutes. I would come back but not if I have to be seated by thw bar with my child when there were other options available."

  • "The food is very good (albeit I'm not a regular BBQ eater so BBQ connoisseurs may know better), and the portion sizes are great for the price. Everyone had an awesome time, especially with the happy hour."

  • "Celebrated a family members birthday. When I made the reservation I told them it was his birthday and asked to put a candle in whatever we ordered. They brought out two pieces of pie with a candle in each. Nice surprise. Food was plentiful. Ribs were great. Nice size portions. Definitely would recommend it."

  • "Recently dined at Dino BBQ in Harlem and will say the food was fantastic. Great service who made great suggestions on food items and showed great knowledge of food service. This is a must for anyone who loves BBQ food such as pulled pork, Brisket, steak etc. Will recommend to my friends and will return to eat again soon."

  • "This place has everything you'd expect from a BBQ joint...big portions, various options of meat, energetic ambience, friendly service. I went there with three friends: one who prides himself on being a meat-lover two others who are bonafide southern folk. These southern friends of mine grew up eating real BBQ and they had nothing but amazing things to say about Dino. You definitely have to be hungry when you go there and also plan to take some back home with you. I would recommend this spot for groups (big or small), but definitely not as a place to have an intimate dinner. I definitely plan to go back, but will have to make sure I don't eat breakfast or lunch so that I have enough room to fit everything in my belly :)."

  • "I've been coming to Dinosaur BBQ for a few years and it's one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The food is great and there are options for vegetarians. It's a good place to bring a big group, but be sure to make a reservation. Also, i highly recommend the Chocolate Icebox Pie for dessert!"

  • "I'm never dissapointed here - another great meal. Ribs were awesome. Brisket ok, not great. Pulled porl superb. Spicy corn terrific. Collard Greens a bit too vinegary tho (same with the slaw). But overall I'll keep coming back."

  • "The best ribs in town. Been all over the country, this barbecue is the real thing. Great portions, great taste. Worth the ride."

  • "I made a reservation on line for 2:30 but I arrived early which I informed my hostess. but I had to wait 30 min for table for 2 eventhough many people that walked in after me with no reservation were seated. I had to speak to hostess two times before my son and I were seated. The hostess forgot that I was waiting because I made reservation online. Overall beside my initial annoyance with seating issues. I would recommend this restaurant, food was great & my waiter was very nice."

  • "This was our third visit at Dinosaur. We are from Texas, and Dinosaur's BBQ did not disappoint. Appetizers and side dishes are awesome. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes and the Sausage, Cheese & Crackers. Next up, ribs, brisket, sausage and pulled pork. Tender with just the right amount of smoke. Mac and Cheese, Roasted Whipped Sweet Potato with Spicy Nut Topping were a nice complement. Definitely a great please for barbecue lovers."

  • "I made a reservation to Dinsoaur BBQ on Open Table and when I arrived at the restaurant I said (as I always do) I made my reservation on Open Table. I was immediately seated without the hostess checking the computer so I suspected that they hadn't checked me in. At the end of the meal (which was great) I went back to the hostess to make sure that they knew I was there to get credit and they assured me that they had taken care of it. When I got home they had indicated that I was a No Show and I received no points. I called them the next day to let them know and they said they would take care of it. I then received an email saying that I had canceled my reservation. Thankfully Open Table support helped me out and I got credit. Beware!"

  • "I've eaten several times in the last few years and this was the best meal I've had yet. The brisket in particular was excellent and my father in law, a Southerner who knows BBQ, agreed. The service was prompt and friendly. I will return and so should you."

  • "The food was great. Got the combo platter of chicken (great), brisket (greater), and ribs (best I've ever had). Also got the chili and chips appetizer which was huge and delicious. Only knocks were mildly slow service and they ran out of Yuengling beer. Otherwise, it was one of my favorite places that I've been to here in the city. Highly recommend."

  • "I met up with girlfriends on a weekday evening for a late dinner. Our orders: The catfish plates were delish, the BBQ rack a little dry, the sides mostly good except for the carrot salad (looked tired) and a lackluster mac n cheese. We split a generous slice of cheesecake four ways, quite tasty. Our server was very attentive and helpful, even with a busy night! Unfortunately, we were seated at a small table. (But we didn't ask for another table, so I can't fault the restaurant.) I've been here before and I would definitely go again, though maybe for lunch or brunch. The #1 train is two short blocks away, so it's quite convenient for folks traveling from other parts of town. Love that Dino BBQ!"
