A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.

The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

Diner Reviews
  • "Although we went on a week night, the place was packed, a good sign! We had to wait only a couple of minutes to be seated and the waitress was very helpful and attentive. She came by our table several times during our meal to make sure everything was OK. I had the quarter rack, whipped mashed sweet potatoes and potato salad, all pretty good. I shared the fruit cobbler with my friend; it had a so-so taste. Next time I'll get the key lime pie, which was exceptional the last time I had it. But my overall experience here was great so I am happy I ate here."

  • "Overall this is a great place for BBQ and about as good as I have had in the NE."

  • "We went to the Dinosaur for good bar-b-que and the rockin' blues of Jimy Graham and left as satisfied possible and wondering if we could have had this good of a time anywhere else in the city! The service was top notch, the food (we had the ribs & pulled pork) could not have been better and the entertainment (no cover charge!)was superior! Jimy Graham might be the best bluesman you never heard of. He works a two hour set with the sincere enthusiasm and love for the music that's so contagious that even if you had never heard the blues before, he would make you an instant fan! We offer our heart felt thanks to the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que for providing us one helluva night in NYC!"

  • "The best bbq restaurant I have ever visited in the city. Prices are reasonable and the quality of the meat is top of the line."

  • "I took my daughter to Dinosaur BBQ for her 34th birthday along with her family, as well as my sister, and my cousin. The food was fantastic, and the service was phenomenal.....and the price was just right! I also love the fact that they are much easier to find now that they have moved to 125th Street. I will be going there again for sure!"

  • "We had the pulled pork sandwiches. Delicious and so tender. We ate @5:30 on a Thursday, so can't speak to the noise level. Servers were very polite and friendly. Will definitely go back when we can."

  • "Love this place! Usually have a hard time getting in but things went very smoothly. Waitress was friendly and attentive and of course the food was delicious. Had the fried green tomatoes for appetizer and we had the barbecue lovers meal for two. Ribs were to die for. Just like I remember from down home in Georgia. Can't wait to go back again"

  • "We went here early on a weekday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed their ribs and BBQ chicken. I would certainly try this again if I am in the neighborhood."

  • "Went here many many years ago and kept wanting to come back. Finally made it for my birthday and really enjoyed the food. Definitely far better than most of the BBQ available in NYC. My wife was even a little put out that I hadn't taken her to Dinosaur BBQ before. Only hitch is it's crazy busy. Reservations are a must. The sheer volume of people makes service a bit spotty. We got seated very quick thanks to the reservation, however the table next to us were seated later but got their water, drinks and food first. Still, the service was friendly and the food made it worth while. We'll absolutely be going back again."

  • "It's an ok pl the food was good actually just the various wings but it is just toooo noisey. Could not hear any music ,it just added more noise .it was difficult to call and get the booking But booking on line was easy ,over all it was not a bad experience !"

  • "food is good but its lil bit too salty. wish it wasnt salty. and it was very loud with music. (aside from kareoke) wish they turn down music a lil bit so that ppl can have some decent conversations. other than those two, service was fantastic, vibe was good, nice scenic view, love the place. please focus on less salt on food and loudness of background music!~ thank you~"

  • "The restaurant itself is nice and a great addition to the neighborhood, but service needs to improve dramatically. The drinks at the bar were yummy and a great way to start off my experience at the restaurant. The hostesses seemed a bit aloof and unaware of how their faces looked. People want to be greeted by a friendly smile, not raised eyebrows. The server almost spilled our food all over us. I was promised a side thay was missing from my order, which never arrived, and was still listed on the bill. Busboy broke glass a little too close to my table and didn't really seem apologetic about the situarion. The bread was soggy instead of crispy for the Cuban Sandwich and the chicken in the Chow Chow sandwich was moist, but lacked flavor."

  • "I lived in Texas for many years and never thought that any NYC BBQ was more than passable. Dinosaur's-Harlem has passed the test and then some. There ribs and brisket are great and I love their beer selection."
    Dined on 7/27/2014
  • "Ribs were excellent and sides were tasty. Like all BBQ joints too much heavy food. Service was slow and then rushed like there wasn't enough staff."
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "Bar has an amazing selection of excellent beers, many on tap. Food is outstanding and the prices are right on. The service was great!!! Overwhelmingly loud though. Conversation was impossible and I left exhausted with my ears ringing from the noise."

  • "Always a treat to eat at Dinosaur. Love to meet customers and potential customers there. It is a treat."

  • "The vibe of the resturant is upbeat, the dinning area has a kinda rustic, vintage feel. The dimmed lights gives the place a relaxed feeling. Didn't care much for the graffiti wall bathroom, gave it a crowded feel. Overall the most important thing was the food, and that was value for your money."

  • "Great place, friendly service, good food. Always make a reservation, if you can, because you can wait a long time without one. It's always worth it!"

  • "Best ribs I have had in Manhattan, meaty and juicy. You want to come very hungry, and with reservations or you will wait and wait. The place is packed for dinner."

  • "Based on the glowing reviews, I made a reservation to Dino BBQ expecting a casual evening of amazing food. The experience was mediocre at best. It took a while to get our food, granted she did lose our food order and by the time she returned to retake the order the kitchen was out of our appetizer order. The vegetables were over cooked and swimming in grease, the carrot, cranberry salad was heavily marinated in mayo and the honey corn bread was stale, I've had better at Boston Market. The catfish was well flavored and the ribs and chicken were decently seasoned, however not a great representation of great southern comfort food or amazing BBQ."

  • "the Dinosaur has a great concept when it comes to food and customer service. last meal was on the money, timely and efficient service, very little wait time and laid back however professional service. only complaint would be the noise level, a bit loud especially when having dinner."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "I've had my fair share of good bbq, but the food here is up on the next level. There was not a single thing I ate that I did not think it was the best I had; from the ribs right down to the deviled eggs."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Food was delish and staff extremely friendly, but ( on our Fri 7 pm, anyway) impossible to be heard over hollering riot of noise around us. Quitter lunch time much ore pleasant."

  • "The Best spareribs ever. Lots of meat and great taste. Good service."

  • "Been to and have recommended this fantastic BBQ joint a number of times. I thought it would be far inferior when they moved down the street, but it is still up to its normal, awesome standards. Every entree is worth the order, but it is the side dishes that are killer. If you don't order the Syracuse potatoes, your life will be far less richer. Even the walls are fun to look at, if there us a lull in conversation. The service is really nice, starting with the host, the server, and bus persons. It can get busy, so make reservations if you can. When awesome is normal, I go with normal..."

  • "most of the time dinosaur bbq is delicious. this time they were miSsing something. the food was bland and they first messed up my order. I hope they fix it rather than let it go."

  • "Love this place. The food never disappoints. Not a place to be if you're on a diet. The Brisket, Ribs and especially the Fried Green Tomatoes. You have to deal with crowds and sometimes long waits if you want a table, but you have an option of the bar and hi-top seats if it's a party of two. Lucky me, I live nearby so I can easily take my order to-go. The pier nearby makes a great place to bring your to-go food and have your own mini picnic."

  • "Ribs are cooked to the point where the meat falls off the bones & are very tasty although a bit fattier than I would have liked. Sides leave something to be desired. If you happen to be on 12th Ave & need a bite to eat, check it out."

  • "Great place for delicious bar-b-que! Well worth traveling to Harlem for good food and drink. Families as well as couples will enjoy the casual non-pretentious "authentic" food and decor. Have brought our friends from Texas and Manhattan and everyone always has a great time! Lots of fun and satisfied tummies!"

  • "We have made Dinosaur BBQ our Fourth of July tradition. The food couldn't be more amazing. We went through two racks of ribs, the pork/chicken/brisket combo and a set of wings – with a bunch of sides – for four people. It's a fun place with an atmosphere that is unique in NYC. Highly recommend."
