Diner Reviews
  • "First time at Diagio and we live only 1/2 mi away. Heard about the bad opening so were skeptical about trying. We were so happy we finally did. Margarita was excellent (not too sweet), tortilla soup amazing, and enchiladas awesome (great sauce - different and creamy). It was really loud due to a big group being next to us but fine. Our server wasn't told our table was in her section so it took 10mins until we were engaged the first time. (We chomped on their yummy, thin, crispy, salty chips and warm salsa in the mean time.) But she was really great and her recommendation for dishes was spot on. She apologized a few times for the mix up which was nice. Overall we cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Diego's is a pleasant enough place to meet for drinks and appetizers. We decided to stay at the bar to watch a game on TV while having some drinks and appetizers. Service was quick enough. Happy hour specials were fair. Bar area got a bit loud, but that was mostly due to people cheering the game. Will definitely go back."

  • "Prickly Pear Margaritas and steak Nachos! Both are the perfect starter to your meal!"

  • "Very good food and very attentive service. A welcome addition to the 14th St. scene."

  • "Very good food. Fair price, nice location. Music OK for ambiance and you could still talk. Service was very kind, with appropriate suggestions and not too intrusive"

  • "Food from chips to tacos to Salmon was excellent. Healthy portions, attractive presentation and really, really, good tasting food. Service was a little suspect. Slow to fill water - a must with hot food. Slow to take order; slow to tell about deserts; slow with check. Overall great place, food excellent and the service surprisingly not top notch"

  • "I love this place! The food is delicious. I had chicken tacos and they were yummy! This is my third time and eat time has been great! Jason"

  • "Diego was a great choice. Food was excellent, service was spot on. Parking is tough, so plan ahead. "

  • "Fabulous meal, wonderful cocktails and excellent service. "

  • "I had high hopes for Diego, but was severely disappointed. Aside from the chips and guac, the food was terrible. We had a party of five people and no one liked their entire; bland flavors, too much cheese, soggy chile rellenos. Service was mediocre and I don't see any of us dinning at Diego again."

  • "food was really average. drinks were WEAK. service was nothing to write home about. just very average. the guac needed salt and was very mild (we like spicy but we were never offered that option). the enchiladas came with cheese on one and not the other. after several margaritas everyone was sober. at least the prices were reasonable."

  • "They were very accommodating with us as we changed the number in our party twice and we were 15 min. late for our reservation. The restaurant was busy and very noisy so it was hard to hear people at the other end of the table. It took a while to get our first round of drinks and guacamole but when they finally arrived they were wonderful. The fish tacos and grilled salmon were the most notable (the fajitas and enchillades were good but not remarkable). The second batch of guacaomole was too salty and too chunky-- but it came out really fast---and with chips this time. Extra bonus was the parking lot next to the restaurant-- best $15 every spent-- as parking in that neighborhood is next to impossible on Sat. night!"

  • "The frozen margaritas were delicious and packed a punch unlike those at other restaurants, you can actually taste the tequila. The food was great- both the fajitas and chicken fajitas were tasty and the smoky salsa was hard to stop eating."

  • "Good food (awesome queso!) and very strong Margs. The HH special for $5 ones was awesome and the menu is varied and not at all expensive. I went for a girls' dinner and sat outside and had a wonderful time!"

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant in a great location. DIEGO's owner must have spent a good deal of money setting up this new restaurant. Too bad they went cheap on the cooking staff. I had a reservation for 11:00 a.m. But the kitchen didn't open until 11:30. The chips were stale, the guacamole had heat but no flavor and the huevos rancheros had no life were served with potatoes that were a mistake. The wait staff got 2 out of 4 orders wrong and my husband said the steak tacos were inedible. Please owners, don't be cheap and hire some quality cooks."

  • "Recently friends and I enjoyed a brunch at Diego's. The food was really good. Fruits were fresh. Veggies were not overcooked. Eggs were perfect. Our server was very busy, and the service itself was a little slow. The real annoyance was a very noisy party nearby, and all of their raucous cackles echoed over the many reflective surfaces in the restaurant. Dining outside would be a lovely alternative."

  • "Great food-very impressed. Fresh ingredients and interesting flavors. Very reasonably priced and they even have happy hour in the whole restaurant on the weekends. Loved those $5 margharitas! Our server was very sweet and attentive. I definitely recommend this place."

  • "Had a great dinner with a friend at Diego on a Tuesday night. The service was attentive in the best way (thank you, Luis!) and the food came to our table quickly. Lots of meatless options, and I always appreciate that. My favorite was the ceviche - refreshing, bright flavors (I didn't let them take this off of our table until the very end). Thumbs up to the white (peach) sangria, too. Will be back soon."

  • "Best Mexican food in DC that have had in quite a while - I would highly recommend and in a great location off of U Street at 14th."

  • "Man our waiter could have been so much more pleasant. And we're easy. Just be friendly. Probably won't go back. There's plenty of good restaurants in DC."

  • "I've heard that Diego has a great late night scene and I'm sure that's the case. I tried it for dinner and was given the absolute least attentive server possible. Each time we wanted to place an order, get our check or request anything, we had to get up and chase him down because he never came to check on us, and looked past us each time we tried to flag him down. I say him socializing with his fellow servers behind the waiter station often times throughout the night. I ended up staying much later than I wanted to on a work night, not because I was enjoying myself so much, but because of the time it took to locate our waiter at each step. The poorest service I have received at a restaurant in quite some time."

  • "I found the salsa and guacamole to be really tasty. I ordered the shrimp brocheta, which was delicious. My dinner companions ordered enchiladas and fajitas and both enjoyed them. The friend who ordered steak fajitas said they were cooked perfectly; she had ordered them "medium." I did not order any drinks, but I will next time!"

  • "Diego offers reliable, nicely presented Tex Mex near the heart of the 14th and U nexus.. Good $5 Margaritas at happy hour. Excellent guacamole. It's a friendly place, unpretentious, good service. In the 14th Street corridor, those three things in combination are rare. Rare. Give it a try."

  • "Went for dinner for two at 10 pm on a Saturday. Past the normal dinner hour, it had become a very noisy drinking experience. The food was still good, standard for its type, but they get credit for trying to be a notch above with their guacamole, dessert, and the margarita. Too bad the service was absolutely atrocious, with the waiter declining to make eye contact and the kitchen losing orders. So, go for what it is (or go when it's not crowded), but don't expect fine dining."

  • "Good food and service. Great guacamole. Nice vegetarian options. However, very loud. We went on a Saturday night and had to almost yell to hear each other at a table for two."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Guac and fajitas are better than El Centro! The DJ on 2nd floor (for whatever event) opened up with Ice Ice Baby so loud that it ruined my otherwise wonderful evening. The food and bar service was the only redeeming factor of the place."

  • "Amazing food. I've been here twice with 2 different friends and it's been great both times. I highly recommend Diego :)"

  • "The food selection is quite extensive and the portions are large. The drinks are especially good. Very good service and nice ambaince . . .what more does a diner need? Looking forward to the next visit."

  • "Diego has the basic idea right, but the execution is off. The guac is bland, entrees are over-cheesed and come looking like it's from Chi-chi's. On our visit, they forgot a couple of items and sent a couple that weren't ours. Also, they hard sell the guac, as in we didn't want it but the guy brought it anyway. In the end, it was comped due to the poor service."

  • "It was a club upstairs and basically one downstairs. So for dinner on a Saturday night I wouldn't recommend. But the food was decent and could be a fun bar."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Food was good. Some interesting flavors outside your typical tex-mex place. Tables are small and place was loud, but we enjoyed ourselves. Wait staff was very nice, but very busy."

  • "I thought we were having dinner at 6:15 pm (Saturday) at a restaurant, but it turned out to be more a bar, with food. It was so noisy, we almost didn't go in at all once we opened the door. We got a table upstairs in a less hectic area, but time we left, our table had gotten surrounded by people standing with drinks and the band was about to start playing. The food was good, but the overall experience was very unpleasant."

  • "Went to dinner for Friday night (8:15 pm) and it was EXTREMELY crowded (we were at a very small table in a corner with very little wiggle room) but staff was great and food was pretty delicious."

  • "not really big on mexican food -- but it was solid. my chimichanga was kind of small.... my friend's fajita and chicken nachos looked delish. happy hour drink specials are good. it got kind of loud later in the evening. i think they turned the music up.i give it a solid three although my friend loves the place"

  • "It's hard to find good Spanish / Mexican food in DC and Diego hit the spot. Food was delicious and quick, good strong drinks also. Our waiter was not very good unfortunately, but the rest of the staff was amazing and made up for him. Very welcoming staff and immediate seating! Would recommend the nachos or enchiladas, the queso is also delicious."

  • "The food was very good at Diego, I couldn't have been happier with taste, presentation and quantity. Great chipotle salsa, wonderful taste to fajitas, large portions, the best lemonade I have had in years. I couldn't stop and had dessert although I didn't need it at all, the Dos Leches was top form. My chief complaint would be that my server spoke too softly, my date could not hear him from three feet away and I was left to pick up soundbites. Not too cool in a noisier, bustling restaraunt. Were the server audible to where we could all hear him, the rating would have profoundly increased. I had no idea what the nights specials were although I know he offered them."

  • "The place wasn't very crowded when we were there, but the noise level was high. We could hear the group at the bar far easier than we could hear our own table! Food was good, but they we're put of a couple of menu items, which is disappointing. Service was friendly, but not consistent."
