We were concerned when we saw the sign at the door that said "Appropriate Attire Required." We were in jeans and tennis shoes for walking tour. The hostess didn't bat an eye nor did the wait staff. We were well served and the food was excellent. The meal was very good and the restaurant was very appropriate for the occasion but it was the service that was outstanding and made the whole meal that much better. Walked into a relaxed, inviting, professional atmosphere where everyone seemed to say "leave yourselves in our hands." Seemed like we had hundreds of servers all courteous and at the wait to help us, yet totally unobtrusive. Mouthwatering filet for my wife and my new favorite is the same as Dickie Brennan Sr. Fine wine, perfect lighting and surroundings, and Sinatra serenading us. Had great experience at a Shula's previously, but that doesn't compare. We have a new favorite steakhouse! Tasty dessert to go reminded for 2 days what a wonderful experience we had. After a few minutes another lady who seemed to be running the show noticed us waiting and asked for my name. She was professional and on the ball and had us seated right away. We were seated at a very nice booth and from then on the dining room service was great. Our waiters were very courteous, professional and knowledgeable of the menu. Our steaks and prime rib were wonderful, although one person in our party sent his steak back to have it cooked a bit more. The fried oyster appetizer was some of the best fried oysters I've ever had. Dessert was great as well. There were diners in what would be considered appropriate clothing for a white linen table cloth /5-star restaurant and then there were those in T-shirts and flip-flops. Anything goes! The steaks and Prime Rib were cooked to perfection and as tender as could be...everyone in our party loved their meals. The side dishes were also very good. The tossed salads (Iberville) in particular were just bad. The dressing had been on too long and as a result it was a wilted mess...better to stay away. From the waitstaff in white coats and bow-ties, crooners in the back-ground and the general vibe and decor, you feel as if you have stepped back in time - in a very good way! The food was good from the amuse bus to the salad - I can't recall the name right now but it was a tomato and bleu cheese stack that was HUGE and very delicious. I do have to say that I was a tad disappointed in my filet. The size was great, but the flavor was a bit lacking. I did have to salt it. It could have been seasoned more; my husband's was the same. He had the spinach with his meal and I tasted it and it was wonderful. One for drinks and desserts, one for making sure your water glass is always topped off, and one for food selection. Each of the 3 servers were very respectful, friendly, and handled special requests with ease. The attention to detail was very impressive. My wife and I told the dessert waiter that we were expecting twins. When he placed her dessert in front of her, he had written "Congratulations" in chocolate sauce on the rim of the bowl. The decor and general feel blend perfectly with the menu.
The food was excellent but be aware that the portions are enormous. The appetizers, sides and desserts are sharable and will easily feed two people. The steaks are generally large (12-14 oz.) with few choices for those looking for something more diminutive. Service was excellent and the wine list was extensive.
My college age son had eaten there before and wanted to back for, believe it or not, the vanilla ice cream. Said it was the best he had ever had anywhere. He was right but the rest of the food was worth going back for as well. They are formal without being stuffy. The entire staff from the hostess to the waiter to the manager are incredible. You will not find a better steak in the city. While it can be a little diffuclt to get to if Burbon St is busy, it is worth the drive. You hear no noise from the street and with the dinning room below street level, you feel as if you are away from the world for a few hours. I went with my best friend for a girl's weekend without our husbands. We split everything except for the desserts - we each HAD to have our own! We started with the portobello fries, went on to the tomato bleu cheese Napoleon, for our entree we got the house filet, perfect size for two, 3 oz each! We ended with bananas foster bread pudding (for Melissa) and the pecan pie (for me.) We both concluded it was the hands down the best dinner we've ever eaten!!!
