DGS DelicatessenRestaurant very accommodatingThe reservation started for 6, and then they agreed to expand for 8. After we arrived, they expanded it again for 10. I had been concerned about the size of the party, but the host, manager and server all made us feel comfortable. One of the benefits of a large party was the possibility of sampling most of the menu!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMMore to come; meets expectationsAside from the black currant flavored iced tea, promoted as plain home brew, the lunch was quite good. Not NY thin deli sliced, but thicker cuts of pastrami on tasty rye with home dressing after good tasting, home pickled platter with wonderful mushrooms and other delights. Cobb salad with corned beef was quite taste as were the fries with zatar...good Middle Eastern touch. While some may quibble with "kosher style," there's always Loeb's for the pure of heart...6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat deliGreat meat and bread!
The sandwiches are delicious and they are just the right size!
I would like to be able to call in for order to go food6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMReally Good Deli FoodWent here and had the charcuterie-type plate to share and the club sandwich. All the meats were well-seasoned and extremely moist. My club sandwich was huge but did not come with any sides. I was full from the sandwich and sharing the meat board. The portion sizes were good, not huge but you definitely got a lot of meat in your sandwich. The drinks were okay, like any other craft cocktails served nowadays.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMHow a Deli is supposed to be!I had the Corned Beef Sandwich and a pickle plate. All of the items on the pickle plate were delicious. The sandwich was thick and juicy and the mustard was a just right compliment to the flavor. I highly recommend DGS Delicatessen to all.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat!Great food. Great service. Reasonable prices. I'm definitely coming back.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulousDGS deli reinvents and reinterprets the classics. Everything about the place is smart-- almost too smart for its own good. We LOVE the brilliant cocktails, the classics like corned beef and Reuben, and the reinventions like the child cucumber soup--not tradtional but rather like a sorbet only not frozen. Bright creek, pure cucumber essence, just delicious!!!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMDGS = THE BOMB!Great restaurant! Celebrated my birthday there. Quite fun!5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat pastramiThe pastrami sandwich is worth the trip by itself. The take-out counter is an added bonus. The service was attentive and prompt.
All the food was tasty, fresh, and the hot dishes were hot.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dinnerBrought in my father-in-law from Philadelphia, who was raised on old school jewish fare. He loved everything he ate.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWe got a bunch of food andWe got a bunch of food and it was all delicious! The service was on point--just the right amount of attention. I would definitely recommend getting the cauliflower as a surprisingly tasty side. Also the pickle plate; you will have fun guessing the flavors. The taste is pretty authentic Jewish as well.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat mealMy friend and I really enjoyed our meal at DGS. The hostess was extremely friendly as was the manager who greeted us at the door. Our server was very friendly and good and all our food came out quickly. Our tables were bussed quickly and our water was always refreshed which was very much appreciated. The staff anticipated all our needs and we didn't have to ask for anything except our check at the end. My friend and I shared the potato latkes and the seasoned fries which were good. We also shared the pastrami sandwhich which was outstanding. My favorite dish was the matzo ball soup. The decor and the images on the baking pans were a particularly nice touch. I had a great experience at DGS and will absolutely be making a return visit.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMFood: Very good. Noisy. One visit, so I'll vouch for pastrami sand-
wich and matzoh ball soup only, but no
reason to doubt quality of other dishes.
Noisy at lunch time -- hard to hear friend
across from me at a table for two, on
upstairs level.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMContinuing ExcellenceLove DGS! The service is always welcoming and efficient, and the food is terrific! Terrific chopped liver, excellent matzo ball soup and tasty pastrami!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my second visit --This was my second visit -- first time pastrami, second time pastrami-smoked salmon. First time rocked! the pastrami is perfection (if expensive). Second time, less so. The honey in the Montreal bagel is distracting; they probably use a smaller flatter bagel to compensate for the fact that the salmon portion is a little skimpy, but there is so little salmon it can't stand up to the sweetness. A flagel would be better and give the salmon less competition. (Though it is nice to have a Montreal bagel in DC.) I would still go back for more pastrami and the chopped liver and the definitely-not-your-mother's kasha varnishkas. And the cauliflower is also very tasty, why not go ahead and get a vegetable?5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious Deli in DCI had been looking forward to trying DGS Deli for a long time. It did not disappoint. Delicious classic deli with a modern edge. There were selections for vegetarians as well. My friend enjoyed the eggplant Reuben. Pickle platter and schmutzy fries awesome. We sampled 3 desserts. Two were excellent: the bread pudding and the Hungarian donuts. Skip the noodle kugel.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMFourth time here and loveFourth time here and love it more each time. Best pastrami EVER. Fun, lively, nice design, friendly staff!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat matzo ball soup, lightGreat matzo ball soup, light and fluffy matzo ball. The double-baked rye bread is authentic, pastrami melt-in-your mouth. Careful, the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are enough food for two people.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMReliable & EnjoyableDGS was once again a reliable and delicious choice. Even though we were a bit late (we notified DGS ahead of time), we were seated right away. The server was knowledgeable about gluten free friendly items on the menu. My fiance and I were both very happy with our food and the experience.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent Reuben...the quality of the meat was the star...nice to find an egg cream at Dupont Circle5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat deli foodThe food was excellent, the atmosphere a not-perfect blend of upscale and casual. Menu ranges from fancy (smoked bluefish on pumpernickel) to more traditionally-done classics (the pastrami, which was buttery smooth but served like a standard sandwich). That several of the entrees are available in half-sizes is clever and allowed us to customize something pretty close to a tasting at a 4-top. Clever cocktails.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing pastrami-menu needs knishesThe pastrami sandwich was wonderful, matzoh ball soup was great - balls were light and fluffy. Pass on the pickle plate - a deli should serve half- and whole sour and full pickles only, not pickled carrots and cauliflower.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food! Will be back toGood food! Will be back to try other things, but wish the price point was a bit lower....2 sandwiches, potato salads and ice teas for almost $50 makes for only an occasional splurge.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMOutdoor Dining at DGSWe had lunch at DGS Delicatessen the other day and sat outdoors. The last time we were there was before Spring had arrived, and enjoying their wonderful food outdoors on a glorious Spring day was fantastic! We brought friends who had never been there before, and I'm sure they will return. Even stopped at the take-out counter on the way out to bring home some chopped liver.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat this town has foreverWhat this town has forever needed: a good old-fashioned deli with a sleek modern feel!4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMThe salmon pastrami is divine. The salmon pastrami is divine. The Hungarian donuts are also good. Beware that the portion size is not what most are used to in American restaurants, but where they lack in portion size, they do make up for it in quality ingredients. It was quite noisy though, so not a good place for quiet conversation. The tables on the 2nd floor are packed so tightly together that if you sit by the wall, someone has to move the table out of the way before you can get out.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place is great! My wifeThis place is great! My wife wants to eat there twice a day. The meat is off the chart good.4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMBest deli DC has hadGo to DGS without a life of eating deli in New York, and you might wonder what it's all about. Go with a deli background, and you'll find the best deli DC has ever seen -- outstanding corned beef and pastrami on wonderfully crunchy rye, chopped liver as good as your grandmother's, and nontraditional presentations (such as the kreplach) that add a creative twist to the bland (lovingly crafted, but bland) kreplach your grandmother made. I only hope that DC can reward DGS enough to keep it.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMDGS has a stellar menu filledDGS has a stellar menu filled with thoughtful and unique options for everyone from vegans to carnivores. We ordered a number of things and nothing stood out as "the best" because it was all so fantastic...though the bread pudding is especially worth noting. All in all it is a fantastic place and we can't wait to go back.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMYummy!Best brussel sprouts I've ever had! Awesome corned beef sandwich on rye! Tasty zatar fries! Yum. Loved the modern, warm minimalist atmosphere with nice traditional deli touches & accents. Servers very friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go back.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMTops for Deli in DCThe updated deli fare at DGS continues to please. We began with a wonderful smoked fish platter. That was followed by a pastrami sandwich which is consistently excellent. Dessert was an enjoyable, if very sweet, fried donut dish. Service, which had been erratic in a prior visit, was very responsive. The economy minded would be wise to skip the pricey, if innovative, cocktails, and simply order soda instead.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experience and lookingGreat experience and looking forward to going back.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMDGS -- DELIcious!DGS is a great spot you need to try! It has great pastrami and corned beef; however, the innovative menu does not stop there. They use quality ingredients. DGS has a cool urban vibe and outstanding service. Do not skip dessert. DGS is DELIcious.4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMCheck it outFabulous food, atmosphere and overall experience. Couldn't ask for more.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways awesome! As always, DGS does not disappoint. When I want a taste of my roots I come here. They put a special unique twist that is just right!4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, service and overallGreat food, service and overall experience. The only thing I would change would be the music selection....heavy metal at dinner is not the most enjoyable as background music. I will definitely be back for brunch !3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMAfter receiving multiple recommendaAfter receiving multiple recommendations to go to DGS, my partner and I went in with high expectations -- which were exceeded by the warm, helpful service, the upbeat atmosphere, and the excellent dishes. I'd particularly recommend the pickled blue fish (which is topped by some unnecessary radishes but is otherwise fantastic), the borscht, and the smoked salmon. Interestingly, DGS manages to be so comfortable that you almost miss what a tricky set of divides DGS is trying to bridge: traditional but modernized, homey but sophisticated, casual and affordable but semi-upscale. DGS is all the more successful for handling that balance beautifully. I now have a long list of friends to take there.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMBeen eager to dine here. FirstBeen eager to dine here. First impressions are lasting ones and the FOH staff was excellent. This goes a long way. They were very service oriented and just as professional as can be. I very much appreciated that. The food was clean and beautiful. Simple eats. Great place. Will definitely return when i have a bigger appetite and with foodie friends so we can really enjoy and chit chat about what we love and try new things!3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMIt just keeps getting better. We've eaten there several times -- lunch, dinner, and brunch. It just keeps getting better and better. The menu standards are delicious and the specials are exciting and never disappoint. Their brunch menu is one of the best in the city. Can't get enough of the matzoh brie.3/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experience at DGS!The food was quite interesting in the way it is adapted to a contemporary gourmet experience. The Kasha Varnishkas was tasty and had a spicy flair. I thought it was a touch over salted. We all loved the Potato Latkes. What is described as Creme Fraiche is just really good sour creme and not the french creme fraiche. The garnish if apple preserves on the latkes is delicious. For vegans there is a house salad that is quite large and very fresh, well constructed with mixed greens, chickpeas, roasted carrots, wheat berries and more. My vegetarian friend loved it. DGS know about desserts! We had an assortment which was excellent. The service was extraordinary! Definitely will go back.3/25/2013 12:00:00 AMBest pastrami sandwich myBest pastrami sandwich my dining companion has ever had... and she's had her share of good ones. Everything was delicious, made on site, with an immaculate blend of traditional and innovative. Highly recommended.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMDeli in my belly!Had a great time at this new and unique restaurant. Menu was so enticing, I had a difficult time committing to one meal's worth of food. To start, the pickle plate and the chopped liver were to die for! Cocktails were superb...and the service was personal and friendly. Oh, but for the noise level...my only complaint. In defense of the noise, you don't go to a deli for quiet romance (though given the right time, you could probably find it here). I look forward to a return trip!3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMLike Bubbe if she was a hipsterI had heard of DGS and had to try it. It did not disappoint. From the Matzo Ball Soup to the Corned Beef to the Appetizing platter and finally the Babka Bread pudding. Everything was outstanding. The manager was friendly and very accommodating. Took an interest in how our meal was and check in several times.
Drinks are great too! Hats off to a very friendly and accommodating bartender.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMexpensiveincredibly expensive for what you got. food was good, although i heard from my dining companions that the Reuben was nothing special...the pastrami was delicioous but a little peppery and $13 and was pretty thin (certainly not NY deli standards) and came with nothing. by the time you add cole slaw you're paying $17 which is kind of nuts3/13/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved everything about theLoved everything about the restaurant. Food was outstanding and the upstairs dining area has a great vibe to it.2/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThe "D" in DGS should standThe "D" in DGS should stand for delicious, which describes every single thing we ordered and enjoyed during our visit. Because everything sounded tasty, I decided to make a meal out of a bowl of borscht and several sides. Each nibble was better than the last and I can't think of a time anyone has made otherwise unglamorous cauliflower into a must-have item each time I return. It's incrediby fun to see old-school dishes with a contemporary twist and we started looking forward to our next visit as soon as our dishes were cleared.2/19/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous brunch! On our first visit to DGS we were very impressed. To find perfectly cooked eggs (in two different dishes) and more than perfect potatoes (something we have struggled to find in DC brunch dishes) was a major win. The brunch menu offers a variety of options of which we tried the pastrami hash and the DGS version of eggs Benedict (poached eggs over latkes with delicious house-smoked salmon topped with a light hollandaise). Management stopped by to check on our meal and also brought a dinner menu for our perusal. We will be back soon to sample the short ribs and the mahi kebabs!1/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
