The last time we were there was before Spring had arrived, and enjoying their wonderful food outdoors on a glorious Spring day was fantastic! Go with a deli background, and you'll find the best deli DC has ever seen -- outstanding corned beef and pastrami on wonderfully crunchy rye, chopped liver as good as your grandmother's, and nontraditional presentations (such as the kreplach) that add a creative twist to the bland (lovingly crafted, but bland) kreplach your grandmother made. We ordered a number of things and nothing stood out as "the best" because it was all so fantastic...though the bread pudding is especially worth noting. That was followed by a pastrami sandwich which is consistently excellent. Dessert was an enjoyable, if very sweet, fried donut dish. Service, which had been erratic in a prior visit, was very responsive. I will definitely be back for brunch !3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMAfter receiving multiple recommendaAfter receiving multiple recommendations to go to DGS, my partner and I went in with high expectations -- which were exceeded by the warm, helpful service, the upbeat atmosphere, and the excellent dishes. I'd particularly recommend the pickled blue fish (which is topped by some unnecessary radishes but is otherwise fantastic), the borscht, and the smoked salmon. Interestingly, DGS manages to be so comfortable that you almost miss what a tricky set of divides DGS is trying to bridge: traditional but modernized, homey but sophisticated, casual and affordable but semi-upscale. It just keeps getting better and better. The menu standards are delicious and the specials are exciting and never disappoint. Their brunch menu is one of the best in the city. The Kasha Varnishkas was tasty and had a spicy flair. I thought it was a touch over salted. We all loved the Potato Latkes. What is described as Creme Fraiche is just really good sour creme and not the french creme fraiche.The garnish if apple preserves on the latkes is delicious. For vegans there is a house salad that is quite large and very fresh,well constructed with mixed greens, chickpeas, roasted carrots,wheat berries and more. My vegetarian friend loved it. DGS know about desserts! We had an assortment which was excellent. The service was extraordinary! In defense of the noise, you don't go to a deli for quiet romance (though given the right time, you could probably find it here). From the Matzo Ball Soup to the Corned Beef to the Appetizing platter and finally the Babka Bread pudding. Everything was outstanding. The manager was friendly and very accommodating. Took an interest in how our meal was and check in several times.
Drinks are great too! Because everything sounded tasty, I decided to make a meal out of a bowl of borscht and several sides. Each nibble was better than the last and I can't think of a time anyone has made otherwise unglamorous cauliflower into a must-have item each time I return. To find perfectly cooked eggs (in two different dishes) and more than perfect potatoes (something we have struggled to find in DC brunch dishes) was a major win. The brunch menu offers a variety of options of which we tried the pastrami hash and the DGS version of eggs Benedict (poached eggs over latkes with delicious house-smoked salmon topped with a light hollandaise).
