A word from Devi
Devi, signifying "goddess" in the Indian language, showcases the celebrated pan Indian cuisine in its modern avatar and was the first ever Indian restaurant to get a Michelin star in the United States. The team of Kunal Lamba (GM and Culinary Director) and Chef Dheeraj Tomar is a direct import from New Delhi just like the dining room artifacts. The restaurant is designed with wood and marble brought from India and touched with vibrant color that invites guests to experience an atmosphere both elegant and whimsical.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Cons: overwhelming scent of incense (I'd prefer to smell curry than incense!!) that killed our appetite from the start; very poor customer service from the hostess to the bus boys; tiny portions for the restaurant week menu; mediocre food not worth the cost of what we paid; would prefer another appetizer over their not-that-great desserts. Pros: the decor is nice"

  • "I decided to visit during the restaurant week for dinner. I was disappointed from the time I stepped in. The receptionist did not smile; the waiter did not come to our table for over 7-8 minutes. After the appetizer course, a restaurant of this reputation, i thought would bring us fresh forks and knives, we were asked to keep our flatware for the next course. I asked for water at least 3 times before I was served. I did not get a desert, but we were only given one spoon to share the dessert that my colleague ordered. I did not the check so I decided to get up and went to waiter to give CC Overall I felt that spent over $100 for two and got out really disappointed, because I expected good service and good value for restaurant week."

  • "Devi was one of the restaurants my boyfriend and I chose to try out during Restaurant Week based on excellent reviews. We ate at 7pm on a Tuesday evening, and it was the most quiet restaurant I've been in. The decor was gorgeous, and we were seated on the second level over looking the rest of the restaurant. Service was very good, and even though we were there for Restaurant Week, they were very attentive to our needs. The food itself though was not worth the hype. For Indian food, I was expecting more spice, and intense flavor. While the food was well cooked, it bordered on bland for us. I would love to see if there's a difference between their prix fixe and regular menus."

  • "DELICIOUS. The drinks are just as tasty! The vegetarian and meat dishes are excellent, authentic and full of flavor. I ate there first for a wedding then went back to make sure it was that good. Yes. Try the califlower appetizer and any of their specialty drinks. My favorite was the martini w lime/pear juice/fennel vodka - nice and spicy. If you like spicy food order their food spicy. You won't be disappointed."

  • "The food was nothing special. The gobi manchurian tasted like it was made of ketchup, and other than the shaam savera, nothing was notable."

  • "Beautiful Turkish decor, nice light music, wonderfuly decorated authentic indian fusion dishes, desserts were yummy too."

  • "If you're into Indian food, you need to try Devi! The food is amazing and inside the restaurant looks beautiful. The service was outstaning. I definitely need to go back. Best Korma in NYC!"

  • "I used to hate Indian food. This food is amazingly delicious. I have gone back twice and each time it was great."

  • "Seated in the rear behind a lace curtain, gives a nice sense of privacy to the room. Food was tasty especially the cauliflower, the lam chops and raita. Naan was just ok, a bit doughy. Eggplant was dull. The meal needed a fresh green salad or something. Server was friendly...a bit too many visits to ask if we wanted another drink...annoying Nice spot"

  • "Devi offers a great menu of vegetarian Indian dishes, grey service , nice setting , quiet so you can have dinner conversation and actually hear. Highly recommend"

  • "great indian food, extremely inexperienced wait staff"

  • "This was our first time at Devi's. We had dinner a bit early in the evening and there were only a few others in the restaurant so, the noise level was very low. The food/menu offerings were different from that of "traditional" American or English Indian food. We thought the food was well prepared and very tasty. However, thought the portions were a bit on the small side. It seems that the menu is for the most part alcarte. Rice, breads and anything else is extra making for an expense dinner. Be prepared to spend greater than $130.00 for two for a limited amount of food. The atmosphere gives you a true Indian cultural experience with a touch of the British colonial influence. The service was good with a friendly reception. Overall Nice!"

  • "Went for lunch in a group of 3 and had the current lunch special $19.99 for any one appetizer and one entree from their lunch menu. Although at first the portion size looked small, but it is actually quite a lot. All main courses come with rice and bread (garlic naan and plain naan). We also received a free appetizer for yelp check-in. Here is what we ordered:- Appetizers - Lamb Seekh Kebab, Chapli Kebab (Lamb), Chicken Kasturi Kebab and Manchurian Cauliflower (Free with Yelp check-in). Main Course - Rara Goat Curry, Kadhai Lamb and Chicken Xaccutti, these came with a large bowl of rice and 4 pieces of garlic and plain naans each. Also ordered a virgin Mango Mohito and a virgin Ginger ale. Everything was exceptional and service was great!"

  • "If you know real Indian food, and are not interested in "nouveau" fusion Indian, this gorgeous romantic restaurant should be your only stop. I have eaten at every Indian restaurant in NYC, a few in London, and many in Mumbai and Delhi. You cannot find better food anywhere else. And the staff is super-friendly and will alter items to your specific taste. Everything is made from scratch and you can taste the difference. Without question, it is our favoriate Indian restaurant."

  • "cmd with group on so had a reduced menu choice, appetizers were a selection and very tasty. Entrees left something to be desired, dhal wasn't particularly flavorful or at all spicy and meat, supposedly pork appeared to be a mix of meats, possibly some beef and some lamb? Desserts mango cheesecake was good and kulfi too."

  • "Excellent food. Tandoori Shrimp appetizer, tangy eggplant vegetarian dish, and shrimp curry all all is delicious. Relatively quiet and they don't rush you. One of the best Indian Restaurants that I've been to in NYC. "

  • "Amazing options for the veggie diner. I struggle with spicy food but the flavours were so amazing I would eat here all the time if I could. Really friendly but professional service. Loved it. "

  • "We are glad we made the reservation at Devi. The food was superb. The drinks were so different and yummy. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. The dishes were all superb on flavor and taste. We loved it. Thanks, Devi. "

  • "We had a Groupon, and for the most part, it was good value. The appetizers and desserts (we had homemade sorbets and ice cream, and a creme brulee) were outstanding. The entrees were somewhat disappointing, although I admit I stayed away from the pork vindaloo (too spicy for my taste, but my husband enjoyed it). The shrimp in coconut curry were quite good, and surprisingly plentiful. But the lamb chops were two tiny chops, hardly a satisfying entree. And the drinks are, in my opinion obscenely priced ($14 per cocktail; $9 per bottle of beer). Most disappointing was the Masala chai I ordered, not on the tea menu, which was nothing but black tea and milk and cost $7!"

  • "It took over an hour before we received service. The food was excessively tangy and inedible. "

  • "Devi had an outstanding prix fixe lunch menu at an affordable price, which allows you to try different entrees and appetizers each time you go. Well worth the visit. Very good Indian food and the service was fantastic."

  • "We did the tasting menu, both veg and non-veg. The lamb was my favorite, and the portions were good for a 6 course meal. The veg menu had a couple of flops, the jackfruit rice was meh, and the prune sorbet was pathetic. They served the non-veg people a trio of really excellent desert mango cheesecake, pistachio ice cream, and a banana pie that were all wonderful while my girlfriend was sitting there with a really sad set of sorbets. As we ordered the tasting menu all the servers had to do was take drink orders and fill our water...which they did a terrible job at, especially considering how empty the place was and the price point."

  • "Needed a nice place near Union Square Theater and was recommended this by a friend. We were there early so space was no issue. Food and service were very good! Would definitely go back and have recommended it as well. "

  • "Devi was a new restaurant for us as our local Indian closed. We loved the food and the service was excellent. The ambience is pleasing and the price is reasonable."

  • "The food at Devi is interesting and extremely good, and there are wonderful drinks - both with and without alcohol. Big vegetarian menu as well as a large menu for meat lovers."

  • "Had an awesome time at Devi, we arrived a little earlier than reservation but our section was already set aside for the party and we were seated within 5 minutes. Ambience is beautiful, food was delicious, drinks were very God as well. Overall had a great night in Devi. "

  • "Everything about this restaurant is outstanding. Very cool ambience inside. We had dinner for two on a Friday night. No problems getting a reservation. We ate in the upstairs area which was very comfortable. Food was amazing and the flavors were off the charts. Recommend the pear martini. Tables were not close together so you did not feel overcrowded. Definitely would come back"

  • "Devi is a hidden gem that is well worth the visit. In the past, sometimes the service has been spotty [e.g. hostesses who are too busy checking their Facebook pages to pay attention to customers, wait staff too busy flirting with each other to provide good service], but this time things were excellent. The food is also extremely good--all the dishes have a slight twist to them, which makes them much more interesting than traditional Indian restaurants."

  • "When I visit NY, food plays an important role. I know all Indian restaurants in DC. I was determined to check out at least one good spot in NY on my last visit. Found better-than-average Indian cuisine and service was ok. Nothing to write home about."

  • "We were expecting a Micheline star restaurant and we got to a one that lost it and it show why. Food is OK, but nothing special, the place is nice, but they send us to a table upstairs where the ceiling is too low and the place too small. Food is OK but in NYC there are so many excellent places that I wouldn't waist my time going here"
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "Devi offers an extensive cocktail menu and had a dessert menu. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was definitely a cut above the usual Indian place. One comment is that the drinks are pricey. Kingfisher was $9 and the cocktails were $14. The food was reasonable though."

  • "Food was good but service was not. They made excellent cocktails however. You just had to wait an hour to get one."

  • "Devi has amazing food, I eat a lot of indian and this place got it right. Everything I ordered was fresh and just really yummy!! (Palak Paneer, Dal makhani, and Paneer along with rice and roti) The service could be better but once you get their attention they are quick. I plan to go again and again!"

  • "We arrived at Devi on a chilly Friday night looking forward to a creative Indian meal in a beautiful, romantic setting.. The New York Times had described the food as "crazy good". That description is either outdated .. Or crazy.. Really mediocre food - lots of rules (can't hang your jacket on your chair) - way too expensive for quality. Huge disappointment. Over spiced food killing the flavor - awful ketchup flavored cauliflower appetizer - should have stopped our meal at the naan bc that's where they stopped making anything good."
