DETTERA restaurant and wine bar brings sophisticated dining to downtown Ambler. Merging progressive American cuisine with wine bar chic in a beautifully restored, historic building offering upscale casual dining on an outside deck with a brick fireplace, a first floor dining level open to a curving black granite bar with over-sized round banquettes. The second floor dining room offers a relaxed atmosphere with pillow filled banquettes, a romantic fireplace, and a beautiful view of the Ambler theater. Wine selection offers over 50 wines by the glass and more than 200 by the bottle. The menu puts a heavy focus on seasonality, sustainability, and the sourcing of locally farmed produce. DETTERA also maintains their own herb and spice garden daily. A great find for that special dining occasion or even light fare and a glass of wine after the theater.Continued

  • "We thought that the duck paired with turnips was a poor choice. The duck was a bit overwhelmed by the strength of the turnips. We did not like the breads offered. The fried bread was too heavy and the nut bread too dry. We would have loved the option of a smaller, softer bread. The rest of the meal was tasty and the desserts were very good. The salads were great. We enjoyed the evening."

  • "The bride and I wanted to do something different, away from the City, away from the heart of the Main Line. We picked Dettera for it's deep and thoughtful wine list and were very pleasantly surprised that the dinner was much more remarkable. A crispy pan roasted trout and the Amish stuffed chicken were two fantastic dinner dishes that were hearty, proportionally appropriate based on price, and best of all delicious! They thoughtfully split the salad we shared (baby lettuces, walnuts and gala apples in a white vinaigrette), awesome. Another stellar highlight was the shared small portion of the parpadelle mushroom pasta. Decadent is the only way to describe it! Paired with a Schild Estate Shiraz, a great meal, service and time was had."

  • "Our server was charming, and assured us we would be on time for the film we were seeing across the street after dinner. The salad was quite good and they split it for us in the kitchen before serving. The dinners were good but rather small and somewhat over salted. A time restraint prevented us from ordering appetizers or deserts. We will return when dinner is the only thing on our agenda"

  • "We haven't been to Deterra in about a year. As soon as we were seated we remembered why - incredibly slow service. 30 minutes to get the first drink. 2 hours 15 mins for dinner for 2. It's a shame because food is good and atmosphere is fun but service is just way too slow. Getting seated upstairs is the kiss of death as wait staff has to run up and down the stairs all night. Key is probably to sit and eat at bar. That's what we will do next time."

  • "Brunch is always a tricky meal when following a vegan diet, there are rarely options beyond a fruit cup and maybe some oatmeal. I was so thrilled to see a fantastic salad on the menu and the kitchen was more than willing to accommodate a dairy-free side of hash browns (which were fantastic!) We also shared a fruit plate with the table which was so delicious... we had never tasted such yummy gooseberries! I will definitely be returning!"

We always get a small assortment of breads and we had to ask twice for this and still dod not get until we were post appetizers. I had a salad and my husband a tuna tartare so it would have been nice to have the bread with our apps. Also we were given the desert menu and wanted to order something but our waiter took 20 minutes to get back to us. By that time, we were over it and asked for the check. We enjoy Dettera, it is not inexpensive and there is a lot of other restaurants in Ambler to choose from...this is was not an ideal experience."

  • "Awesome food, great, friendly staff & service and good prices. Extensive wine list can be confusing if you're not a wine connoiseur, so ask your waiter for help. We ordered the Hanger Steak entree rare, which is the best way to have it. Sorry for all those who don't like to see their meat red, but you should really try to get over that fear, you'll thank me. We also tried a couple of the specials which weren't on the menu. They were both helthy choices and very good (raw oysters and a mushroom side dish). It's worth the trip for the food and you'll be surprised that you're getting good value for your dining experience. We weren't rushed, had a delicious dessert and dessert wines and left quite content. I look forward to returning soon."

  • "We went there for Sunday brunch and had an “old movie” experience. The brunch items were actually quite tasty. I had poached eggs and pork belly, my wife had the tuna tartar. However, the tuna dish came with no crackers or toasts. It was kind of naked. So we asked for crackers...none in the place. Asked for toast...no toast served for brunch. Well, we looked at the next table and they were having the French toast with apples. So I guess you know what we did? We ordered a serving of French toast, hold the eggs and hold the apples. The waitress final got it and brought us some toast. Duh! However, we still enjoyed the brunch (probably because we ordered the bottomless Bloody Mary’s!) and will likely return. Jack Nicholson lives on!"

  • "Went with another couple. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The Dorade Royal (Sea Bass) was excellent. The others had Rainbow Trout and Cod. All were amazing. The presentation of the meals was very well done. We had the family style brussel sprouts for the table. These were excellent. They have a very good wine selection. With drinks, a bottle of wine, one dessert and coffees, the meal came to $307.00. For a fine dining restaurant, I believe this to be about the average price."

  • "Four friends for dinner (two newbies) on Saturday evening. Everyone enjoyed their meal, and the restaurant in general. For my wife and me, it is our go to place for their Amish chicken dish. As lovers of the bird, the preparation never misses. Our friends both loved their meals, one had pasta and the other had hanger steak. My tuna tartare was perfect, as were the other appetizers."

  • "I have been to Dettera a number of times and always had a great meal. This was not as good. The lobster claw meat they used must have been from baby lobsters as the claws were the smallest lobster claws I have ever seen. The food preparation was good. It took about 35 minutes after ordering to get our first course, we had to ask for bread after we saw it served to other tables. I ordered a wine pairing. The first glass came out halfway through my first course, the second glass came out 20 minutes before my second course came out. Overall the meal could have been much better. On a good note, I would go back. The manager was kind enough to comp my drinks which went a long way towards keeping my good will."

  • "Great bar in terms of drinks and the overall feel of the place. A well executed creative and reasonably priced menu. Tuna tartare is among the best I have had anywhere. Grilled flank steak preparation was melt in your mouth delicious. Brussels sprouts grilled with home made bacon was decadently delicious. Dettera also has a very, very well chosen wine list with fair pricing. Both of those attributes are rare these days. Better restaurants seem to think that a 300% plus markup is fine. Not me. And not Dettera. Their markup seems to be more in the 200% range and at times less. And again, their selections are very well chosen - there's something good for everyone and at every price point. Beginning to end, a great evening."

  • "Evening started by being seated promptly for reservation. Jan, our waitress explained specials, talked about weather, but neglected to take our drink order. Disappeared for 15 minutes came by to deliver drinks to a table seated after us and never looked at our table while we desperately tried to catch her eye. She then disappeared to the back again. Since we were sitting up front by the hostess stand, I explained the situation to the hostess, who handled it very professionally as I asked her to change our table to a servers that was competent. Relocated to upstairs room, which is too large and a cafeteria setting more than a dining room atmosphere. Dave, our new server was more efficient but lacked a well trained professionalism."

We were seated on the second floor which gave an excellent appearance (no tablecloths) but desperately needed sound panels. The ceilings were high and open. The room was half full but cannot imagine it if it had been filled to capacity. I had veal flank steak which was tough - asked for a substitute for brussel sprouts, received three tiny, tiny baby carrots. Our biggest criticism was the unprofessional wait staff. All were very young and appeared to have started work with no formal training. My husband received his salad and 15 minutes later they brought him another! Service friendly but extremely slow."
