A word from Desmond's Steakhouse
Desmond's Steakhouse takes a contemporary approach to the quintessential New York steakhouse, melding stylish ambiance and service with culinary substance. Beef, USDA prime aged to perfection in our open-to-view dry aging room and prepared for the kitchen by our butcher, shares the menu with succulent raw bar selections, along with an array of other tempting non-steak offerings - fish, seafood, lamb, chicken and more.

Like our diverse menu, Desmond's offers a variety of dining experiences. From a quick bite at the marble-topped bar - one of the city's longest (and most inviting!) to a business meal at the dining room's placed for private conversation tables or a romantic dinner at one of our cozy booths.

Everywhere, there is a luxurious sense of comfort made even more welcoming by a staff dedicated to gracious service.

My boyfriend and I were visiting New York for my birthday and I wanted to go out to a steak house for my special birthday dinner. Unfortunately our server didn't care about us/our table, maybe it's because we are under 30 going for a nice dinner. He had a 10 minute conversation with another table about places to visit in NY while we were waiting to order, there is a time and place for that and it is not when you have tables waiting around to order. The waitstaff was perfect in keeping up on our bread and waters but when it came to the actually server he could care less about our table. Another server saw that we were clearly waiting for our server to come to our table but we just informed him we wanted our check and to leave.

The overall experience was good, only thing is that I brought a date over to the restaurant and when we ordered the $1 oysters and clams, they told us it was only for the "bar and Happy hour". Good thing is they made an exception, bad thing is they charged me $2 for each oyster and clam. If a restaurant accommodates a customers request, they should not be charged double. If it weren't for this, I would of been back many a times. Because of this, I will probably find somewhere else to eat. Its not about the money, its about the way you do business.

Our first time on Friday. Glad to see a steakhouse in this neighborhood. They need some more menu options, improve on wines by the glass list and ensure the waitstaff is more attentive. The pianist was a marvelous touch. May give it another try.

Classic steakhouse, everything done and cooked well. Nothing stood out to me about the place, other than the service. We ended up ordering off a prix fixe menu for lunch, which they didn't advertise but someone in our party knew about. I'd go back.

You definitely get what you pay for when you come here. The food was excellent. The crab cakes could be a bit more portion friendly. Everything else was great (2 filet minion cuts and a 10 oz burger). Again, it was worth the money spent. I did think it was a little on the pricey side though.

I went for a business lunch at Desmond's with important clients. This was my first visit there. I figue I would try since it is right around the corner from my office. When we were seated, the hostess gave us the standard lunch menu. It wasn't until my client asked the waiter if there were any smaller steaks available did they produce the the Price Fix lunch menu. This made the prices and the size of the meal reasonable. I asked the hostess on the way out why we did not receive both menus, she stated it was the company policy not to give it out until asked. Based on this comment I WILL NOT return even though the food was very good.

Relative to rankings on Trip Advisor, etc. I found this place to be very overrated for the money and in a highly competitive steakhouse market. Good location near Time Square - Theater District. Nice looking place. Veal was awful - very fatty. Sides were mediocre. Maybe just an off night, but there are so many reliably good steakhouses in NYC - never would go back.

The service was good and the food was good. However, when my daughters ordered surf and turf, the waiter had to go into the kitchen to check to see if there was still any lobster tail left. Since it was 5:30 in the evening, that issue shouldn't have even arose. Well, he came back to the table to say that instead of lobster tail, they were serving 1/2 of a lobster with the steak. The girls were disappointed because they did not want the body and claw of the lobster, just the tail. Other than that, we were happy.

I always struggle to fine decent places near my office in Penn Plaza, so Desmond's was a find! I did think I had made a mistake when I saw the diner frontage but the steakhouse entrance is on 38th street & is a separate entity. The menu was what you expect. The steak was excellent & the wine list suitable for most events. Obviously a lot of regulars in there which is a good sign. I will go back.

This new place is a real find. Service was impeccable, very attentive...ambiance is lovely. Most important this was the best steak we've had, and we've eaten in them all...Keens, all Palms, Quality Meats, Peter Lugars, Del Frisco's Bobby Vans...you name it. This was Just plain outstanding steak. One negative, only 3 shrimp in their shrimp cocktail and all others have either 4 or 5, for the same price...and all same size (colossal) shrimp. The crabmeat cocktail is good but also skimpy portion. Order the steak but don't order the shrimp or crabmeat cocktail.

A surprising treat! Excellent food, the steak was sizzling hot on service and the meal was excellent. They actually compete with many of the higher end steak houses in the city yet as the location is slightly off the beat and track are not busy enough for the service and attention to suffer as it does at Keens or Sparks. I was taken aback by a well selected wine list, dedicated and attentive service and an accompaniment of excellent accoutrements. The only issue is the actual environment, almost too quiet. That however is because its undiscovered and wouldn't trade that for the world.

The sign in front of the entrance showed specials for clams and oysters yet they had none available. The menu showed lobster and fillet of fish but they had none to offer. It was a Thursday night at 6:00 PM, my guess is that they purposely shorted their supply order because business is not good. The service was was not service, it was friendly but barely there. What struck me was how my waiter walked the dining room with his head down, rather than scanning his stations he almost didn't want to make eye contact with any of his patrons. If it weren't for the rainy afternoon thunderstorm and the Ranger playoff game that nig, my guess is that the restaurant would have been empty which is what I believe the staff was more used to.

This was the worst food i have ever eaten out. It was dinner quality at high end prices. The Filet Mignon had gristle on it and had marks on it were the jockey was hitting it. The mash potatoes were powered and watery, the wine was watery, the creamed spinach was tasteless and the tab was over $180 for two people

My fiance and I ate at this restaurant on a Friday night, and we used a Groupon deal to do so. The resturant was quiet for a Friday evening, and yet, the service was somewhat slow. The food was good, but a little over-seasoned. The interior was nicely done, and there was a great view onto a Garmet District steet-front. I would eat here again, and recommend the place to friends, as well, but it wasn't the most remarkable NYC steakhouse we've visited. I think that if more people had been in the restaurant when we visited, there could have been a more vibrant energy in the place that would have made it seem more exciting to visit!

The baked clams were very good, and the lamb chops were decent, but the Chilean Sea Bass was fishy. We didn't send it back, but did tell the waitress afterward (one might have expected some courtesy, even if just the offer of an after-dinner drink or dessert, which we would have declined anyway). The selection of red wines was extremely disappointing for a steak house! But the real affront was that the gratuity was added to the check in excess of 20% - it was actually 24% of the pre-tax check total! And the waitress did not mention that when she brought the check (as though we might tip more if we hadn't noticed?) I've experienced a gratuity added, although not usually for a party of two, and never such an extreme amount.

My girlfriend and I found a groupon for Desmond's and were excited to try a new steakhouse. We were not impressed. We arrived before our 7 PM reservation to grab a drink at the bar, and enjoyed the very personable and great bartender. The night started off well. When we sat at our table, the restaurant was not very busy and there were very few wait staff on the floor. As such, it took a while for us to be greeted by our server. Throughout the entire night, service was slow and inadequate, and our server was not double-sat. The calimari could have been more crispy (it was extremely soft), the buff mozz was fresh, the mac & cheese was overly milky, except where the extra cheese was, the filet was "ok" and the bread pudding was not very good.

My steak was overcooked by almost 2 levels. A steakhouse should be able to cook a piece of meat to med rare. Also, their menu listed in OpenTable is inaccurate, as the seafood platter (1) is not served in small ($45) or large ($65) portions, but instead is $35/person, (2) has no oysters or clams and (3) the half lobster tail that you get with it was so chewy we could barely get through it. Really is kind of a rip off for what you get. The calamari was good, but didn't make up for the rest of the meal. All in all, I was very disappointed for what was supposed to be a nice dinner.
