  • "Husband had gumbo and pork chop, I had caprese salad and short ribs. All were tasty. Initial service was a bit slow. I am always taken aback when restaurants don't have liquor licenses here in FL - just not used to this yet. Then waitress wants us to choose wine before we have decided on dinner. Awkward. Also, they are very stingy with their little bread thingys -like they are precious. I would prefer real bread."

  • "Out first visit was a bust. They had only been open for a short time and the waitress was giving us excuse after excuse. This time was better. Food was average. Sadly it was not busy at all. Derek really needs to stepbot up or this spot will not last. Even a quick "how's the food" to the handful of customers goes a long way."

  • "We love having a reasturant with such good food so close to Palmetto. We dined on a Monday evening and it was a typical, off Season light crowd which made for good service, hot food and a non rushed time. Everyone enjoyed their appetizers and salads although I think a restaurant of this quality should serve homemade croutons on a Ceasar. Seafood tacos were over the top with much flavor and undeniably fresh. Grouper was a beautiful presentation but 3 diners thought it was not the freshest. It was a Monday so maybe the grouper was not Monday's catch?"

  • "This has been my 5th visit to Derek's and it keeps getting better. You're greeted from when you first walk in from a very polite host, with a minimal wait time. Our server explained what was new on the menu and shared her personal favorites. She made the experience perfect. Even better than her, was the yellow fin tuna, which was amazing. Seared perfectly and accompanied with the perfect sides. I will be returning."

It's our new go-to place for dinner, close to home, and as good or better than any restaurant we've driven 100 miles to find. It's a great place to meet friends, or make new ones. Casual elegance! Food presented well. Balanced, intense flavors. Strong New Orleans influence. Never a dud on the menu. Wait staff must all be foodies they are so knowledgeable. Solid beer and wine list."

  • "Table of four and everyone enjoyed their meals. Pork chop, seafood muddle, voodoo crawfish, grilled shrimp and the wine selection was nice as well. Our only complaint was the table. Ladies had to sit on a bench seat and one of the men had to sit next to a barn door? Awkward to get in and out, the door handle was at shoulder height so also awkward. We'll ask to be reseated next time. Service was very good, no rushing, specials were presented with a knowledge of the dish. We'll go back!"

  • "Amazing meal! Took the wife out for our very rare date-night and could not have chosen a better restaurante. The food was amazing (fried green tomato appetizer and crab cakes are a must!). The service was outstanding - it was truly fine dining that makes the common man feel like a king! The decor for the restaurant was also impressive - our waitress told us the cypress tables were hand-made by a local craftsman from reclaimed lumber. Also, the coolest barn style door I have ever seen just made the place live up to it's name - rustic casual! This is our new date-night, special occasion, treat-ourselves place to dine!"

  • "Three of us were to meet at Derek's for dinner before an evening event. The third person in our party was 20 minutes late but staff could not have been more gracious and hospitable. We were given a nice, private table. We ordered a bottle of wine and an extra glass was brought for our late friend. When we asked about sharing an entree our server offered to plate it on two plates before serving it. We were never hurried. The food, wine and service were all excellent!"

  • "The food was wonderful and the service fun and well executed. My son who graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge said Derek's was the 3rd best gumbo he has ever had. Salads were well done with light dressing, the accompaniments and sides were unusual and splendid. The desserts were also unusual and excellent - actually would have passed except for the selection being irresistible. Wine selection by the glass was average, but adequate. Anxious to try Derek's again for lunch as well as dinner."

  • "We heard about Derek's through a friend and decided we should try it before heading back north for the summer. We thoroughly enjoyed not only our meal but a nice bottle of wine. The menu has something for everyone and we loved the southern flair and flavours. Really like the idea of the menu changing so it won't get boring!   • "If you didn't want flat bread or a sandwich, there really were not a lot of other options. The "small plates" were not large enough to eat as an meal. Also,, Peanut oil cole slaw had too much peanut flavor. Now I have eaten dinner here before and loved the entire experience. But this lunch was disappointing. "

  • "The restaurant has plenty! The waiter (Rodney) had none. Food was quite good: kale salad outstanding, vegetable flatbread: very oily! but nice flavor. Shrimp very good. Dessert: "Dark and Stormy" ginger curd and ginger fruit: way too intense for more than a couple of bites, even with sharing we left some. South African Chenin Blanc: nice to find some out of the ordinary choices on the list. Amazing how a washcloth waiter can detract form an otherwise lovely meal..."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch at Derek's this week. It was perfect from start to finish. I ordered fish tacos and they were delicious. The fish was prepared perfectly and the toppings were yummy . My husband loved his turkey sandwich with popcorn pesto! Our friend had a delicious shrimp po boy. The peanut slaw was delicious and the garlic French fries with roasted garlic bits were amazing. We were sorry to see Derek's move from Sarasota , but definitely worth the drive here. Service was great . We will definitely be back! We bought a gift certificate for a friend so she could go here, too. "

  • "This was our first visit to Derek's and we will definitely go back - it was a very pleasurable night. Our table was waiting for us when we arrived & the service was attentive with the wait staff extremely knowledgeable of every item on the menu as well as how they are prepared. One funny experience was, between our first and second courses, the restaurant had a 10 minute power failure but, with the emergency lights one, the wait staff proceeded with serving the meals like nothing had happened. All the food was very good and prepared perfectly but the cornmeal crusted calamari was SPECTACULAR. As much as I want to try everything on the menu during future visits, it will be very difficult not to get a dinner sized portion of the calamari. "

  • "Manatee Ave (and Bradenton generally) is a culinary desert. Derek's may begin to change that. The food is innovative (i.e. a slightly sweet Ceasar's Salad, grilled fish with lemon preserve butter). Everything is fresh and well presented. The service is very warm, friendly and efficient. I usually avoid dessert but don't make that mistake here. The Dark and Stormy (Caramel custard with caramelized pineapple pieces in a rich ginger sauce) was perfect."

  • "We had an amazing dinner at Dereks. The quality of food and preparation are top notch. Fun atmosphere, casual, but the food is just what you would get at a 5 star more "formal" restaurant. Service was also what you would get at a 5 star restaurant, they know how to serve their customers. If you are a local, you must go and dine as much as you can. We want to keep this restaurant around for a long time. "

  • "Season is winding down and finally we got to Derek's. This is a small restaurant with wonderful food that is out of character for NW Bradenton. The menu has lots of selections, more than we anticipated and the food was way, way, way beyond Florida tourist trap selections. Three diners had grouper and they all raved at flavor and preparation. My Husband had Seafood Muddle, just a tad spicy as he is not a heat lover, but he thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the Seafood Taco's and they were without a doubt the best Seafood Taco's I have ever eaten. Food was not pricey by better restaurant standards but several older ladies seated by us complained about price and menu offerings. Obviously they were not prepared or used to better dining. "

  • "I had to choose a restaurant for 3 couples. Saw Derek's on the ABC TV news as a casual, unique dining place. We found this to be true. The regular menu had the same entrees as most restaurant but the preparation of the items was very good. The specials that night were an added treat for a couple of us. All 6 of us enjoyed the their meal. The waitress was very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable of the menu. This help make selection of entrees. The corn chowder was excellent and people liked the Kale salad. We would recommend Derek's as a great place to dine. "

  • "We have very limited dining in Bradenton. Everything here is dinner at 4 in the afternoon with a senior discount. Derek's was a pleasure. The food was excellent and the bottle of wine the waiter suggested was one of the best reds I have had in many years. We live local and will make it one of our regular evenings."
