Diner Reviews
  • "The ambience was great and the food was delicious, however our service was seriously lacking. I do wish there was more information on the menu on the size of the food, as we were surprised by how little food came with our order. My party waited ages for water, for our food to be ordered, and one person didn't receive her food until 30 minutes after the others did. We waited nearly an hour for a check."

  • "This is one of those special places where every dish is a culinary expecience. The wait staff is excellent and very attentive. I recommend it to anyone with a taste for class."

  • "Departure is always a great option for a special occasion. It feels a little like a Vegas restaurant dropped in the middle of downtown Portland. Small plates are all fantastic with a few stand outs--the wait staff will clue you in. Get a table outside on a nice summer day as the sun is setting."

  • "Loved the vegan menu, its innovative take on foods familiar & not, attentive service, urban-chic decor & bird's-eye view from the outdoor terrace. At our table inside, inches away at the next, we saw a dish of spring-green leaves: “wok-fired” Brussels sprouts. We ordered & were pleased. 3 plates of the sweet potato tempura roll, fat & crackling with its spinach, ginger & sweet soy stuffing, would have been fine, but we tried 4 other small (medium, actually) offerings. All good. I'll be back for a dessert extravaganza sometime. All but 1 are vegan. I topped out on the Departure Banana Split: banana tempura, cherry compote, miso butterscotch, coconut-milk-based peanut brittle ice cream--food of the gods! 1 complaint: Tight 2-top spacing!"

  • "the dim sum items were delicious, especially the grilled shrimp and the mamosas."

  • "we entertained a family member from southern california who absolutlely enjoyed every bite! He has been ranting about his experience ever since. Love the small plates and all the flavors married so well. The views were spectacular! Can' wait to come back!"

  • "Sometimes you sacrifice quality food for a view or be part of the scene, but not at Departure. The food was exquisite. Fresh, flavorful, beautifully presented, it was hard to choose from so many options. All kinds of food preferences can be easily managed with the wide menu options. We had a reservation for a Saturday night at 8:45 and had to wait a little longer than expected for our table. It was bustling, vibrant, a bit noisy and the tables are a little close together getting in an out a bit disruptive for neighboring tables. That said, I would definitely consider going back again."

  • "Greeted and seated in a timely fashion but waited almost 15 minutes before a server approached our table. In the meantime, was sitting next to a screaming child (I feel for the parents but why just sit there and allow the screaming?). During this time a group of business men were being led around the restaurant looking like they were going to remodel it?? What made matters worse was they actually stood around our table and had a discussion which made us feel like we weren't supposed to be there or better yet, not noticed. Once our server arrived (she clearly had too many table's to attend to) she was pleasant and efficient. Our food was good and the cocktail even better. I will not be returning anytime soon."

  • "We went to Departure for my fiance's birthday. It was my first time there, but one of his favorite spots and I understand why. We had the golden curry and big eyed tuna poke and our food was unbelievable! The alcoholic drinks were just as magnificent! The view was unbelievable and the ambience was impeccable. The only downfall of our night was that the service didn't quite live up to the rest of the experience. Our waitress seemed slightly apathetic and didn't seem to enjoy working there. Aside from that it was the perfect night!"

  • "Love the share plates. I always like to try out many dishes and this restaurant was great for that. Great view and would like to try the outdoor dining experience next time."

  • "This place is definitely on the pricey side but a must for special occasions or a place where you might grab a late night drink and get a view of the downtown Portland landscape off of the patio. Took a group of guys here for a bachelor party and they loved it plus everyone that worked there were friendly and catering."

  • "The food was phenomenal! We went for Portland Dining Month and ordered one of everything from the special menu. All of it was delicious! My one complaint was that our server wasn't exactly on top of her game. It seemed relatively busy though, so it may have been a fluke. It didn't affect my overall impression of the restaurant. We had a great time and plan on returning."

  • "We went during the Portland Dining Month 3 Course for $29. There was the two of us so we tried all the offerings. I thought the size of the entrees was appetizer portions. We had the grilled beef coulette with toasted broccoli and the crispy rockfish. The grilled beef consists of 4 slices of beef and 1 small piece of broccoli crown and the rockfish dish was 3 small pieces of deep fried fish where the breading was 60% of the dish. I am a thin person who gets easily full so believe me when I say the portions are small. So, go for the bar scene but not for the food because you might feel you were ripped off."

  • "Food was excellent, small portions so you just order more to share."

  • "This place is always a great choice! A great menu with a wide variety of Asian food! Beautiful presentation! For what your getting, the food is worth twice the price! The only place like this in Portland! The seating and bar area are like none I've ever seen! Very modern with a blast of class and a hint of sexy! A great place for any occasion, especially dates! All the servers wear purple dresses too! Very awesome! And the view is the best in town! A better scotch list than I've seen in any other restaurant!"

  • "This was my first time at Departure and it blew me away...the food was superb, the drinks delicious and imaginative, and the service was impressive. The setting is gorgeous and people watching might be the best part. Felt like I was at a hot spot in Chicago or NYC. An instant favorite."

  • "Departure has become our late night dining go-to spot. The food is consistently terrific, the service is flawless, and the place vibrates with a sense of excitement. The Crazy 88 will always be my beverage of choice. I've tried to replicate it at home, with no success, so I guess I'll just keep it as a special part of dining at Departure. And this is the one and only place that has made me love Brussel Sprouts (who knew they could be so tasty!). Give me those two items and the Crispy Pork Belly and I have Departed for Heaven!"

  • "I would recommend Departure to my friends with a warning: The servers are not the usual "Portland-Vibe-Nice". We are all in a good mood. We aren't high maintenance; we don't have special requests. Why can the servers never manage to crack a smile? It takes away from the experience I have here every time."

  • "Departure provided great, patient and friendly service to our small group of diverse guests. Everyone was impressed with the quality of food and the prices. All members of the service staff did an excellent job making our group feel special and attending to our needs without seeming pushy or annoyed with serving a group. We will definitely consider Departure again as a great Portland destination for a group meal."

  • "I knew Departures as the great bar on the roof of The Nines, but didn't realize they have a full-serivce restuarant there too. The food was wonderful. We went in for the $29 three-course special dinner, but ended up ordering small plates for our group of 8. It was fun and the food was outstanding."

  • "I wanted to find a nice romantic place with a scenic view and Departure was a definite good choice for it. The staff was very friendly and the food and drinks nicely made. We ordered the crazy 88, Japanese lager and the garlic rice. Overall me and my girlfriend were very pleased with this lounge. Will definitely come back"

  • "The place is amazing and so is the service, probably the best in Portland. Iwe were diss appointed with the portion size versus the price. We expected the prices but the portions were so small we ate elsewhere after. It would also be nice to have a litte more of a selection on the menu, for both food and drink. There is more of a wine selection then the food and drinks together. Overall I would go again."

  • "Great place as usual. My only complaint on this visit was that there were 3 people and we ordered a few items. If the item only comes with 2 pieces it would nice if the wait staff would advise the table so that you could plcae 2 orders of that item."

  • "My wife and I went out for a date and were told this was a great spot for foodies and wow we got good advice. The setting and view match the quality and variety of the dishes... Well done with outstanding service"

  • "Great food and visually pleasing but I hated where I was seated it wasn't comfortable and we sat at a tiny table since it was only for two. It was pretty loud in the dinning room and the music was very modern night at the roxbury like and we were so close to the other people dinning it made it pretty distracting. I will only go back if I can sit at a booth or a private room. Service was just average could get the similar service anywhere but again I do have to say the food was amazing!"

  • "$29 for a bowl of rice (crab fried rice) and a coffee? REALLY???? $20 for valet service? REALLY???? I made a reservation for 6 people to celebrate a birthday on March 29, Am I going back? No way. I'm changing my reservation to Gracie's, 3 Doors Down, or Bluehour."

  • "Extremely crowded and noisy. No one we saw was over 35 years old. Looked like a real meet-market. Food was good but with very small portions and very slow service. Rather expensive for what you got. Took a very long time to get our car from valet."

  • "I don't even know where to begin! Since moving to Portland the only thing i have complained of has been the food. I grew up in Chicago and my taste buds have traveled the world and back. Though I love this town one thing has been lacking for me. That's flavor. This place blew my mind. Everything on every dish was combined perfectly! The service was amazing! The beverages left a lasting impression and the view.....oh my gosh the view! I can not wait to visit again!"

  • "My partner and I decided to visit Departure during Portland Dining Month--not to save money but to try new places. We typically eat out 3 to 4 times/wk. I'd heard good things about Departure's atmosphere and food, and I was generally not disappointed. A few things really rubbed me the wrong way, though, and they all related to a feeling of being rushed right from the start. Our appetizers and entrees came at an unusually fast pace, so fast that I was still eating one of the entrees when the server delivered our dessert. Seriously?!! And then all items were removed from our table immediately after the bill was paid, with no invitation to take our time. I have never felt so unwelcome, and I will not be returning."

  • "After visiting last December for dinner before my bachelorette party, I took my now husband and parents back. Departure once again didn't disappoint! The food was excellent and the atmosphere was electric! We had a great time and will definitely be coming back again soon."

  • "Arrived at 5 PM and the dining area filled up fast - probably because of the special menu being offered for Portland Dine Out Month. We opted for the special menu and enjoyed the 3 course offering - everything was unique and tasty. Service was outstanding and while the tables are close, the noise was only a minor issue."

  • "The food is always impressive here with both a flavor and a delivery that are memorable. The service was good the last time we were there and really not great this time. Our waitress seemed impatient as she took our order, and then forgot several of the items we ordered. When asked about one, she said she would check on it and then after some time came back with the item--which was a 3 minute prep job. I would rather just have her own up to forgetting and apologize. By the time I received the item everyone else was done with their dinner and I would rather just have cancelled the order. I will go back and hopefully get a better pick of waitresses next round."

  • "Headed there to try out the Portland Dining Month menu - we had some standout dishes with the two options offered. Kale salad and marinated prawns were vibrant and balanced in flavors, the rockfish was superb (crispy balanced by papaya salad), and the beef dish tasty but seemed small in portion size. Desserts were wonderful as always - pineapple ice box was exceptional, and chocolate pot de crème with cardamom was rich and delicious. Try the menu out if you happen to be there this month!"
