  • "The food was Japanese and was very good. Each plate comes out one by one to share it with your companion. We had the steak that comes out sizzling on a hot rock. So cool! The food was excellent and even my husband who is a beer and burger guy, liked it. The view was beautiful. The only negative was the outside eating area is a bit crowded as we sat almost elbow to elbow with the table next to us. But that didn't really affect our dining experience."

  • "This place served us some delicious versions of their offerings, including tempeh BBQ buns (dim sum) and an Asian salad of kale, seaweed, variety of steamed mushrooms and a miso dressing. We cleaned our plates, then ordered some creative & tasty desserts. All 3 of us agreed it was a fabulous meal and a nice experience."

  • "Great experience at Departure. May have had as much to do with my date as much as anything. We sat outside on a warm Saturday night. I was facing south, away from the building. We were seated about 7:15 and stayed until about 11:15. Watched the sun go down to my right and reflect off all the shiny buildings and her cool looking blonde hair. We needed the gluten free menu and the food was delicious...I would never have known I was eating anything other than their normal creations. finished with a nice glass of port and the dark chocolate dessert."

  • "Departure is at the top floor of a hotel (or was it Macy's?) but with its own entrance and cool decor, it doesn't feel at all like a hotel/store restaurant. The restaurant is all translucence and soft blue glow with a good view of downtown Portland. "Pork buns" were done the "new" style rather than traditional way -- tasty pork filling in a soft folded pillowy wrapper. Crispy pork belly was rich and earthy, salty but not too much. A specialty roll, unagi/beef was fine but not exciting. An interesting cocktail list and sake selection made deciding hard, but the two we tried were both good. Desserts were also interesting and delicious. We had green-tea sponge cake rolled with berry sauce and egg custard with almonds & carrot sorbet."

  • "We went to Departure for dinner on our 20th anniversary. The food and drinks were lovely and our server was fantastic. Water was refilled quickly and often. I have Celiac disease and was very impressed with the gluten-free menu and the care taken with my food. The view was amazing....next time we come back I want a seat on the outdoor patio. Love the modern decorating! The only detractor was our table. We were placed at a tiny table and bench with other diners directly to our left and right, very close. It was our first time there so we didn't know what it was like, but it wasn't quite the quiet, romantic table we'd hoped for on a big anniversary. Not their fault, we just didn't know. But would be a fab place for a dinner with coworkers."

  • "The view from Departure is most appealing. You're on the 15th floor and can step out onto the terrace. The atmosphere is lively and between the music and the decor, it's like you're on a disco spaceship, pretty cool. Food is well presented and tasty. It's "small plates" so you can order several things to share and try, fun. OK, here's the problem, the service. We were seated at a table in the inside bar and didn't get to experience the full view other than people watching. Probably because of where we at service was slow. I had to ask for the vegan menu. Drinks are watered. Terrace bar has a smaller cocktail menu then inside. I can't given them a 4 rating and would think twice about returning. But is was fun once."

We made reservations for inside but were able to find open outside seating. The view from our table was stunning. The dinner was a shared experience. We ordered a number of small platters to share.   • "I have eaten at Departure so many times that I have lost count. As a vegan, I really appreciate that Chef Gregory has created an entire menu just for non meat eaters. Plus, my wife is gluten free; and, there are many options for her as well. The food was a knock out as usual. I was thrilled to find that a Korean dish has been added to the menu; and, I can't wait to go back and order that dish again."

  • "Came here for a date night with my boyfriend. I usually only come for drinks but decided to do dinner this time. The service sucked. Our waitress (Kat) said a few words to us but wasn't engaging at all. She seemed to be spending a lot of her time at the 6 top seated behind us. She didn't make any recommendations or tell us anything about the food. The food was mediocre. The scallops we ordered came out luke-warm and we weren't sure whether it was supposed to be a hot or cold dish. The smoked salmon roll was good, the fried squid was AWFUL. Too much breading that seemed to be underdone, I was expecting more of a calamari dish. The restaurant is really pretty but it doesn't have an upscale service staff as I expected, nor the food to match."

  • "The restaurant is a cool place with great, unusual views of the city. Nice outdoor seating with quick bar service. Definitely a younger crowd scene. 20 somethings will love it. We went for the food and it was mediocre. A bit overpriced - $30 for 6 oz of beef that wasn't even that great. My husband liked the sushi, which I don't eat."

  • "Overall pretty good, stay away from the fried calamari, waaaayyyyy to much breading. They tasted like thick doughy paste instead of calamari. The fried crab rice was quite good and so was the tuna poke although a small serving for the price. Great view and service was pretty good."

We had to ask someone if they serve people here or do we have to cook it ourselfs. It took 25 minutes before i asked someone. We had to walk up to the bar to get drinks."

If you do, don't stay. Have a drink or two and then go downstairs to Urban Farmer and let the next guy have a turn. No place like it in Portland."

  • "This was a really great restaurant up on top of The Nines hotel. The food is served similar to tapas style with small and medium sized plates intended for sharing. The food was was excellent and we loved all the dishes we tried. The view was great, be sure to ask for a ledge table so you are right on the edge and can see out over the city toward the river. We were there in July and for the evening the temp was wonderful for outdoor eating where it was a little uncomfortably warm below. The staff were very attentive, friendly and gave excellent advice for the food selections we made. I recommend the pork bellies, if they are on the menu when you go."

Each time we called the restaurant Tyler who answered was very patient and accommodating. They sat our group immediately and the server was professional as well. The food was good, and fresh, but didn't blow me away."

  • "I visited Departure during a girls weekend in Portland (down from Seattle). We had a reservation with 5 for an outside table (highly recommended) for 9pm. We showed up early to grab some drinks and enjoy the view - a MUST! The outside bar was packed with a line out the door, we grabbed drinks at the indoor bar in the restaurant with no line and fast service. The wait staff are all strikingly good looking (part of the gig). We had some sushi rolls and the bbq pork buns, all which were fantastic. Definitely small plates meant for sharing/ordering multiples. The handsome waiter brought my friend a birthday drink as well as a birthday dessert, and recommended some nightlife for us. Will definitely be going back next trip!!!!"

  • "I made a reservation through open table and few days after I got an email that I missed my time. That wasn't true because we went to the restaurant however people in the front didn't check us in properly. In my reservation I specifically asked for outdoor table, when we got to the restaurant they told us we need to wait additional 30 minutes because outdoor dining is on first come first serve basis. In between meals my kids went to the rail to take pictures and they were asked by the host to leave because this is not viewing area. After she realized we are guests are told them they can take pictures. I didn't click anything in #2 question simply because I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. It has nice views but personel is hostile ServerOK"

  • "Great outdoor seating. Great selection for vegas/vegetarians. Its like a tapas restaurant with variety. Small yet well prepared entrees. We were presented w Separate VEGAN menu! We were told that the outside propane heaters were not working. So we could not sit where we wanted to, however they were turned on 15 mins later for larger groups. Left us very disappointed. But overall great food/selections/ambience and fairly good service."
