Diner Reviews
  • "This was a really great restaurant up on top of The Nines hotel. The food is served similar to tapas style with small and medium sized plates intended for sharing. The food was was excellent and we loved all the dishes we tried. The view was great, be sure to ask for a ledge table so you are right on the edge and can see out over the city toward the river. We were there in July and for the evening the temp was wonderful for outdoor eating where it was a little uncomfortably warm below. The staff were very attentive, friendly and gave excellent advice for the food selections we made. I recommend the pork bellies, if they are on the menu when you go."

  • "Departure is a great combination of interesting food and people with a Big City view. Because Portland's outdoor dining season is limited, I recommend taking advantage of summer in the city at Departure."

  • "Food was good but nothing outstanding. Service was great. Views are nice and the rooftop bar is excellent. Worth going to but not a top 10 Portland restaurant."

  • "I went there with my fiance to celebrate our engagement. They gave us a table by the window, we had an awesome view while enjoying amazing food and complimentary champagne!"

  • "My sister and I came to Departure Restaurant and Lounge as per her suggestion for a fabulous sushi experience in Portland. And that is exactly what it was! The sushi was delectable, beautifully served in perfect amounts. The desserts were both satisfying to the eyes, original to the mind, and exquisite to the palate! The setting, high above the Portland skyline, with a view of the river was almost surreal. I will visit Departure Restaurant and Lounge on all of my Portland adventures!"

  • "My friend and I had a great meal and fun time, on July 4th. The food was all wonderful and our server suggested the wings, which were outstanding!"

  • "We had a group of 8 ladies and we had to push the reservation out at least 4 different times to accommodate our group. Each time we called the restaurant Tyler who answered was very patient and accommodating. They sat our group immediately and the server was professional as well. The food was good, and fresh, but didn't blow me away."

  • "Departure was a nice place. Made reservations and got it for the same day. I really wished we got a closer window view of the town. It was a little loud for my liking. Our hostess was nice. But it was overall a cool place. We will have to definitely try to check out happy hour next time"

  • "the unique design and layout of the restaurant is a real draw. the presentation of the food and quality is attractive and delicious. as is all too true in the city any longer the noise level is beyond the point where conversation can be had. we left with our ears ringing."

  • "Service was a little bit off food was pretty good but the view was damn good"

  • "When exiting the elevator it seems very dark but down the hall it opens into a bright cheery space like atmosphere. Outstanding view of the city and our Nordic waiter was wonderful"

  • "I made a reservation through open table and few days after I got an email that I missed my time. That wasn't true because we went to the restaurant however people in the front didn't check us in properly. In my reservation I specifically asked for outdoor table, when we got to the restaurant they told us we need to wait additional 30 minutes because outdoor dining is on first come first serve basis. In between meals my kids went to the rail to take pictures and they were asked by the host to leave because this is not viewing area. After she realized we are guests are told them they can take pictures. I didn't click anything in #2 question simply because I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. It has nice views but personel is hostile ServerOK"

  • "Great outdoor seating. Great selection for vegas/vegetarians. Its like a tapas restaurant with variety. Small yet well prepared entrees. We were presented w Separate VEGAN menu! We were told that the outside propane heaters were not working. So we could not sit where we wanted to, however they were turned on 15 mins later for larger groups. Left us very disappointed. But overall great food/selections/ambience and fairly good service."

  • "The first time I came here it was winter and we had to sit inside. This time the weather was so beautiful and we got the best seats on the patio. I had friends in from out of town, this was a perfect place to take them. Our party was a mixture of vegans and gluten-free pescatarians (I hate that word). There was something for everyone. The food was outstanding and you can't beat the views!"

  • "Great way to get a birds-eye view of downtown and have a great meal or drink at the same time, esp. on a warm, sunny day. Menu is very inventive and well-executed Asian fusion. A great introduction to the city for us!"

  • "Food was excellent as was the service. The small plate format works well and allows you to sample many menu items. On a nice day you can eat outside and see a view of Portland..tables outside are on a first come basis."

  • "They don't lean on the view, all elements superb! Really enjoyed the pan Asian menu, the Waygu sizzling beef is incredible."

  • "The food was ok. I could get better food at a cart. The music was loud and annoying. Our waitress was a but pushy and at those prices, I would expect more patience. The best part was the view. Other than that, I will stick to "real" sushi resturants where the service is friendlier and not so pretentious."

  • "I was here for a friend's birthday. Wait time for food and drinks were long at the bar and at our table. Food came in separate times so we couldn't all eat together. Don't have separate checks which we thought was odd. The place was just okay, wouldn't recommend any of my friends to come as I feel it could of been a better overall experience."

  • "Departure can get pretty busy on a Friday night, so it's a good idea to make reservations. My dining experience was a special occasion; the staff there were extremely kind and very welcoming. Food portions are smaller than usual, but you don't leave hungry. Priced well for the quality of food served. Drinks are pricey if you are looking to go there with more of the intention of having more of a casual night out. A must go in my opinion. "

  • "Good food (especially the Tom Kha soup) but expensive. Ask for a window seat or, if sitting outside, a seat at the edge.....great view of the city! Our waitress was so-so, not impressed with her demeanor but her service was ok. Fabulous dessert.........the Green tea cake with guava ice cream was delicious and beautifully arranged, thank you! It is a lively scene, mostly a 20/30 yr. old crowd so the people watching wasn't all that interesting. That was ok tho as we spent more time admiring our food and the view."

  • "My husband & I live downtown. After a many time walking past the Nines and hearing how good Departure's food is we finally made a reservation. My husband, who enjoys a more historical and classic/timeless feel to a place, felt out-of-place in the heavily modern decor. I don't mind modern, but the Space Mountain/padded walls was definitely odd. We opted for vegan menu and split two roles, the brussels sprouts, and an udon bowl. The size was just about right. Our reservation was at 10:15, we left at midnight. Our waitress was scattered and panicked by the amt of tables under her. If the service was faster, the food a little less salty, and the uber mod decor toned down... we'd come back. Ah well, there are many other Portland gems downtown."

  • "My husband and I wanted to try something new and go somewhere where we couldn't normally go with our kids. We had a great experience! We got there right as the restaurant opened and it wasn't until we started to finish our meals that it started to get busy, so the privacy was very nice. The service and the view were amazing! Also it wasn't as expensive as expected which is always a plus. Can't wait to go back soon. "

  • "We were excited to have dinner at Departure on the Opening Night of Rose festival. I had eaten there before on opening night and there's a great view of the fireworks and the balcony had been open so you could see them from there as well. This year was different. They closed off the balcony on the restaurant side so you could not go out and watch and our waitress told us that you couldn't see them from the restaurant anyway. Which was untrue, when the fireworks started, there was a perfect view from the windows facing waterfront. I also found that since we had a group of 9 and our waitress was guaranteed 20% gratuity we had very lacsidasical service. I enjoy Departure but it will jit be a first choice when dining downtown in the future. "

  • "The food is fabulous.....ALL of it !!! Not too large, but great for sharing. And even the desserts are exquisite. But the music is too loud and everyone needs to talk loud - so it's difficult to relax and enjoy. (Especially if you are over 50...........) My husband is a developer, and he said lots could be done to soften and absorb the noise."

  • "It was a pleasant experience overall. The food was small portions but good. We went for a birthday and no birthday dessert was given. Guess not that type if place. Overall service was good food was good. Will be back for happy hour more so than dining. "

  • "Noted for its view, we booked a table for 4 a week in advance. We were given a table with NO view and were told we could choose to wait for a table on the outdoor dining section. Very disappointing. "

  • "ery good food but small portions & high prices. Waitresses were personable & attentive. Ambience is the best I've experienced in Portland. Interior was upscale."

  • "To say the Departures experience is great is a total understatement. That said, let me give you some hints for maximizing your experience. First, no matter how long the wait, insist on eating outside on the patio. BTW: It's on the roof of the Macy's building 15 floors up. The 270 view afforded is magnificent! If you are really picky, ask for one of the tables at the edge. Next, make your reservation so that you dining at sunset. It's not about the sun setting over the ridge, but more about the experience of watching the city transform from day to night. It is absolutely breathtaking and serene all at the same time. Thirdly, go on an early weekday if you can. Otherwise, you are likely to wait for many hours. ENJOY!"

  • "We went and for happy hour after checking in to our hotel room downstairs at "the nines". Food was very good, specifically the taps/small plates. The maki rolls were ok, but only ok. Service was spotty, seemed like they may have been a little understaffed as we saw our server upon ordering and then when she brought the bill. Prices were quite high, but you pay for the view, and what a view it is. Sitting on the rooftop made our afternoon, very relaxing, sunny and gorgeous. Interior was a bit to pretentious for our tastes, but we didn't sit there, so we didn't care."
    Dined on 5/5/2014
  • "We got seated right away, but our server forgot about us. We got served water and that was it. 35 minutes later we had to get the attention of a different waitress to take our order, our original waiter came and apologized to us, obviously he had completely forgotten about us, plus if it wasn't for my brother who made another waitress come our way, every other worker except for the water guys, just walked by our table, looked at us, and kept about their day, very unprofessional and rude."

  • "This was our third time dining at Departures. The atmosphere cannot be beat. With almost a 360 degree view of downtown and the surrounding hills, including a postcard view of Mount Saint Helens, there is no where in Portland quite like it. So many interesting and tasty flavors are incorporated into Departures' small plates. The spicy cucumber/carrot/avocado salad and sautéed Brussels sprouts are outstanding, and for dessert, don't miss the Tempura dipped Banana Split. For two out of our three visits, the service was very good. On our most recent visit however, the service was not up to par, which is too bad because our daughters joined us for a special evening. The bottom line: Departures is a uniquely tasty restaurant with good service."

  • "Four people shared eight small-medium dishes, in waves, and a bottle of good sake. Each dish was excellent and showed a very high level of craft in the kitchen. Our server was knowledgeable about the dishes and the extensive sake choices. Early dining pays off in terms of attention from staff and kitchen and reasonable noise volume. This place is a must for us when we visit Portland. "

  • "Although the menu is creative the actual food offerings are not the top of the line asian dishes in taste and quality available in Portland. This place would be great if you are young and out partying. It feels more like a downtown Manhattan space (think Marimoto) that your typical Portland foodie haven. It was really loud and the woman at the table next to us had a voice that could have cut diamonds. (very irritating). If you are looking for a hip noisy bar scene with interesting small plates to accompany the party then this is the place for you. If instead you are looking for a quite spot with incredible food look elsewhere."

  • "I just returned from a visit to Portland. This was my second visit this year. On both visits I dined at Departure twice. The food and service are fabulous. As a Vegan it is so much appreciated when I dine somewhere that is not a Vegan restaurant, but that has a separate Vegan menu. Not an issue for me, but in case anyone reading is Gluten intolerant they also have a Gluten Free menu. Anyway, everything was spectacular once again, and we will certainly return to Departure to dine on our next visit to Portland."
